Light waves squeezed through ‘slits in time’

A celebrated experiment in 1801 showed that light passing through two thin slits interferes with itself, forming a characteristic striped pattern on the wall behind. Now, physicists have shown that a similar effect can arise with two slits in time rather than space: a single mirror that rapidly turns on and off causes interference in a laser pulse, making it change colour.

The result is reported on 3 April in Nature Physics1. It adds a new twist to the classic double-slit experiment performed by physicist Thomas Young, which demonstrated the wavelike aspect of light, but also — in its many later reincarnations — that quantum objects ranging from photons to molecules have a dual nature of both particle and wave.

sophomore thinking of going into bio engineering or bio medical sciences. on AP Bio now and question is between AP Chem and AP Physics. Q1: is it recommended to do another science AP after AP Bio for colleges? I did summer Chem and don't remember much. so hesitant to take AP Chem:( Taking Physics1, AB certainly in Jr year. Should I do AP Physics senior year? Q2 is how hard will AP Physics in senior year (along with BC) be after Physics1 and between AP Chem vs. AP Physics any suggestions please

I don't think it's super required to do another science AP for colleges, but most biology programs I know of require physics and chemistry as a class to take in college before you graduate. An easy way to circumvent that requirement is to try and test out with your AP score! Of course, if you're totally against chem/physics, don't do it, but chemistry and biology are very intertwined, and so is physics to a lesser extent. Also, it shows that you're interested in STEM, and colleges look at the rigor of the classes you take in high school.

If you're worried about not knowing anything for AP Chem, it's literally just review from Chem 1, so don't worry about that. Just look over Chem 1 notes and read the textbook over the summer if you're really worried.

From what I've heard, Physics 1 at TJ is very similar to AP Physics 1/2, and it's still a pretty rigorous class. You can definitely take Physics 1 in junior year and see how you like it, and then make a decision.

Personally, if you absolutely don't want to take both AP Chem and AP Physics, I would say go for Chem. Both Taylor and Jones are retiring next year, so the teachers will be wild-cards (although there are rumors that Owens is coming to teach at TJ!!), but it's more directly intertwined with biology. Physics is more useful if you're leaning towards bioengineering vs biomedical (especially if you're considering applying to an engineering college!!), but chemistry is a necessity for both, and I would recommend trying to figure out a way to squeeze both into your schedule if you take Physics 1 and decide it's something you are interested in.

Of course, at the end of the day, don't do anything just for colleges and take what interests you, and everything else will fall into place. Good luck anon!

Padma gave a super awesome response, but I wanted to really emphasize that if you want to go into any kind of engineering, taking AP Chem is definitely a good idea because many schools will take that credit and at nearly every school I've visited they say chem is literally hell. Physics is similar, although so is TJ physics, so take that how you will.

My friend took 17+ hour semester and did okay, but she didn't work a job and had a couple of sleepless nights, just depends on all you're planning to do

i mean, im gonna take calc3, physics1, an intro to programming class, and a communications class come fall regardless, my only thing is whether or not i should take an art class on top of that !!! thats the thing pushing me to 17 hrs. im an engineering major so like..... a lot of math stuffs..... eugh......
