Lab Coat AU

very self indulgent au (sometimes also kinda diary dump) bcs this major stressing me out and ghouls make things better… so might as well stress out the ghouls by projecting, also kinda manifesting 🤞

the idea came from talking about ghouls with @hypnoneghoul when we’re both in class 😬 and i thought ‘nuclear scientist dew with a messy bun in lab goggles’ then @alwaysjustmina asked me about it and she wrote a little something (thank you so much 🖤) and i ran with it… and it took a 90° turn bcs it ended up being different, though the coffee shop is still there and phantom also works there, but now rain is also a scientist and everyones a scientist and some are professors, and yeah, you get it

the general idea is that they’re all scientists working in the same building, though they have different topics and are working for different degree levels, but theyre close friends, even the profs are also nice and chill (unlike mine)

on the weekends they do various things, but often get together for some down time at zenith, copias bar. oh and they also often get lunch together at terzo‘s diner or snacks at the coffee shop phantoms working at

dew and rain are pining for each other (so said the other ghouls who have a bet going on, actually theyve been secretly dating since their fifth semester, and rain is planning to propose after they’re both done with their phds but dew got there first 😂, copia knows bcs rain was drunk)

copia and aether are dating, sunshine and mountain have been on several dates and we’re just waiting for mountain to ask her out, swiss is courting phantom and phantoms also crushing on aurora…

who else hmm… i kinda wanna have zephfrit but i have no idea how to connect their storylines… and cirrus cumulus… i have too many ghouls and no idea how to connect them 😭

under the cut i put their research topics and the degree theyre working on, and also what they do on weekends, which is not gonna interest anyone but me but 🤷‍♀️

side note : these are inspired by real professors and lab supervisors in my own university, and also the building layout are also kinda based on my own, and some misc facts too… okay im basing a lot of this on my own uni 😬 let me make make my life sounds more interesting than it actually is okay, and also i need distractions

side side note : im aiming to do my bachelor‘s degree end of this year, and my current plan is to do it in the group im basing mist‘ from… who knows how that will go, but hey, manifesting

absolutely LOSING it over what minor to pick PLS help and doing a bunch isnt an option unfortunately T_T

to give some background im currently a biochem/physical sciences (an odd concoction of physchem + stats + math) double major with an option to do a minor on top of that

current future plan is to get a masters in nanoscience/nanotech. but that is very much subject to change.

id highly appreciate some advice/unfiltered life stories from people who were in similar situations of being able to add extra words on diploma ahahaaaaaaaha 🦠💉🧫biology🦠💉🧫

-with my current course load i can basically get this minor through doing one singular class

-the con is that im already doing a biochem major so it feels a little bit pointless

-quite a few fourth year seminar courses im interested in, ex virology

-smartest option on the list as machine learning and ai are very big tools across all fields im interested in (it will probably be more useful than my physical sciences major in the short run T_T)

-gives me an actual theoretical background bc rn my usage of neural networks is very much inputting random weights and hoping it works core

-im going to be doing a lot of stats in my computational physics class though so this may be a little repetitive but idk.

-if we are being super fr im more drawn to climate/environmental/field adjacent work rather than medical research

-but the way this continent is going i feel as if all of the climate job programs may shut down soon

-if im really feeling very antsy about this i can get a volunteer research position at a computational climate lab and achieve similar experience/stepping point

-parents are extreme climate change denialists and may not be too happy that $$$ are being spent on this one

would be happy with any stories that ppl have to share about the importance of minors to their life choices!!

Exam week!

First exam was yesterday. I don't want to jinx it by saying it went well but I think it went at least okay, and even if not I've got a decent buffer from my continuous assessment.

I'm glad I looked at metabolic pathways as much as I did, though I could've stood to memorise some in more detail. Thankfully, I could still figure it out from what I did know.

This afternoon we have chemistry for biologists. Including physchem, so my brain is alphabet soup because "here's 50 equations you must know for the exam". ...

They finally corrected my first chemistry lab report! The assistant liked my graphs which I generated with a little Python script. I have some points for improvement for next time and still ended up with a good mark. I'm still waiting for the second one but the second one was written during revision week so I honestly put less effort into it.

Wednesday I want to take some time to organise my notes for the geoscience module and then take the open book exam.

And then that's it for this term and I can relax, catch up on housework (I'm NOT the kind of student who cleans to procrastinate...) and reading-for-fun!

i think people's idea of chemistry is mostly synthetic and maybe a little bit analytical (crime serials and the like) but physical and Weird Analytical is entirely outside of most people's frame of reference. and we have a bit of a shortage of people going into those fields (and really always have ever since the particle physicists stopped doing chemistry stuff for the most part- chemphys has shrunk by even more than physchem has) and therefore it would be helpful to get people interested in it at a young age. thus the Contraption

okay so for other people not hypnone imma say this, ive spent today learning for ochem exam and in a physchem lecture… so my brain isnt braining right and yeah…

i feel like this is too shallow and surface level and doesnt convey everything im feeling 🥲 also for chapter 6 i really cant find the right word, selfish is not the right word, its like he thinks too low of himself and makes himself sooo small too often and too much, but at the same time also pushing everyone away and talks big and acts like he doesnt need their help… why rainyyyyy

Friday afternoons are usually reserved for pack, Mountain usually got lunch with the others and then near the end of the work day they usually gather in an empty classroom to play some boardgames, Catan is a group favourite for some reason, or maybe because it’s the only one they have here on campus, and then usually they’d end the day at Zenith, where they’d watch Zephyr play and Swiss sing, Aether loosening up with his boyfriend Copia, owner and bartender of Zenith, after a whole day of quantum equations and whatever, and also watching Rain and Dew pining over each other obliviously.

But this Friday is unusual, Mountain couldn’t get lunch with the pack, he had some problems with his reaction and had to redo it, also he probably wouldn’t be able to join the board game session if he wanted to at least isolate something today, and then maybe he’ll have enough time to evaporate the solvent and take an NMR spectrum of the isolated substance that he can work on on the weekend and report to Cumulus on Monday.

He finally has about 2 hours to get something to eat, while his reaction is cooking and Swiss said he’s going to keep an eye on it while Mountain is out. So here he is, on his way to Caféine in hopes of some muffins or bagels, if there are any left, if not then Terzo’s diner it is, even though it’s going to take longer and he’s still anxious about his reaction.

He was still thinking if he should’ve used a different catalyst for this one, when suddenly someone bumped into him. It’s a woman, ghoulette too, judging by her scent and the slight magic he sensed, though he can’t pinpoint the element, so maybe a multi ghoulette? In any case, she’s someone he’s never seen before, with curly bright orange hair, who was apparently also distracted by something on her phone, “Oh my, I’m so sorry, are you okay?” The tiny woman said.

“No harm done, I was also not paying attention,” Mountain shrugged, “Anyways, have a good day!”

“Wait a second, could I ask you a question, I’m kinda new here.”

“Oh, sure! Shoot! I’m Mountain by the way, earth if it’s not obvious from the name,” Mountain smiled.

“I’m Sunshine, or Sunny, air and fire, and I’m looking for Professor Alpha’s room, I’m supposed to meet him in about 10 minutes and I’ve been going around and around looking for his room, mind telling me where it is?”

“I could show you, c’mon,” Mountain said while walking in the direction of the physchem section of the building, “So, physical chemistry huh? PhD or Master?”

“Master, and yeah, his research sounds interesting and not that far from what I did for my Bachelor’s so… here I am. And thank you so much, Mountain.”

“Not a problem, I’ve been needing some distractions today. It’s been a long day and nothing is working yet.”

“If you don’t mind me asking, do you also work here?”

“Yeah, I’m doing my PhD research under Professor Cumulus, you were in the organic chemistry section before, no Professor Alpha over there,” Mountain smirked.

“Stop it,” Sunshine laughed, “This is barely even my first day here, and the internet page is not helping at all.”

“I don’t think they’ve updated it since ages ago,” Mountain said with a chuckle, “And here we are, Alpha’s office.”

“Oh, again, thank you so much, Mountain!”

“If the meeting doesn't take too long and you’re free afterwards, would you maybe be interested in getting lunch with me? Not like a date or something, but just friends you know? I could show you a few things around campus and, yeah, something like that,” Mountain stammered with a blush high on his cheeks.

“Sure, I think we’re just gonna talk about my schedule for next week and the general premise of what I will be doing, so maybe 10 to 15 minutes? Is that okay or are you in a rush?”

“No, no that’s fine, I don’t have anything urgent unless my reaction explodes or something, but my friend is keeping an eye there. Go, Alpha doesn’t like it when people are late.”

“Oh right, thank you!”

Mountain waited outside Alpha’s office while fiddling on his phone, annoying Swiss by asking him about his reaction, even though they both know it’s fine, Mountain followed all the steps carefully and it’s not gonna explode or anything. Just then Omega walks by, a bit surprised to see Mountain in the physchem area, “Hi Mountain, fancy seeing you here.”

“Oh, hi Meg, Alpha gets a new ghoul and she got lost in our area, so I took her here and we are going to get lunch to get to know each other because she’s new and all, and I didn’t get lunch with the others earlier.”

“Huh,” Omega nodded, “Reaction problems?” He asked, earning a nod from Mountain, “Well good luck with that, and with the lady. Have a nice date! I’ll tell Dew and Aether not to disturb you.”

“Thanks! Wait, what? It’s not a date Meg!” But Omega is already walking away, back to his own office.
