Read about this on forums and photography websites and you will still come across a lot of negativity towards the Creative Cloud subscription model, especially from Photoshop users upset at the loss of a perpetual licence. But today, I aim to cut through this negativity and take an objective look at the differences between the two options.

Two types of Lightroom users

To start, we have to acknowledge that there are two types of Lightroom users.

The first uses Lightroom in conjunction with Photoshop and wants access to both programs. For this user, the Creative Cloud option is the only choice if you want the latest version of Photoshop CC. Alternatively, if you own a version of Photoshop CS and are not bothered about upgrading to Photoshop CC, you can buy the standalone version of Lightroom and use them together.

The second type of user carries out the bulk of their image processing in Lightroom. For tasks Lightroom can’t handle, they may use an older version of Photoshop, a less powerful program like Photoshop Elements, or a plug-in such as the Nik Collection or Perfect Photo Suite 9. These users may be wondering whether to continue using the standalone version of the software or to subscribe.

Financial considerations

If you are on a budget, and don’t need Photoshop CC, then it is definitely less expensive to buy the standalone version of Lightroom. At the moment a new version of Lightroom comes out approximately every 18 months. At $9.99 a month, the subscription service would cost you $179.82 over that period. If you are new to Lightroom, the full version (priced at $149 from the Adobe website) saves you money, and if you already own Lightroom, then the upgrade (priced at $79) is even less, saving you a little over $100 over the same time period.

As a standalone version user you get free upgrades until a full new version comes out. So, if you upgraded to Lightroom 5.0 when it first came out, you can upgrade to the latest version (5.7) for free, taking advantage of new features introduced since then. But when Lightroom 6 comes out, you will need to pay the upgrade fee to use it. Upgrading isn’t compulsory, and you can continue to use your earlier version of Lightroom as long as you want.

Adobe have stressed their commitment to continuing the standalone version of Lightroom for the foreseeable future.

What the Creative Cloud subscription gives you

The Creative Cloud subscription is more expensive, so what do you get for that extra money? The two headline features are Photoshop CC, a powerful image editing program that you are likely familiar with, plus access to Lightroom Mobile, a mobile version of Lightroom that works with iPads and iPhones (but not currently with devices using the Android or Windows operating systems).

There are several additional features that may interest some people, such as 2GB of online storage space, access to Lightroom Web and the ability to use Photoshop CC and Lightroom on multiple machines (although not at the same time).

What happens when the Creative Cloud license ends?

If you stop paying your subscription fee you no longer have the right to use the full versions of Photoshop CC and Lightroom. Photoshop will stop working completely (or at least until you renew the subscription).

But Lightroom is different. Bear in mind that with Lightroom your Raw files are untouched. The edits you make are stored in the Catalog. If you lose access to the Catalog, you lose access to all the edits you have made to your images, including all post-processing.

Adobe doesn’t want that to happen, so it gives you partial access to Lightroom even if you cancel your Creative Cloud subscription. You have full access to the Library, Book, Print, Slideshow and Web modules. Your Catalog remains intact, including any Collections you’re created and any changes to metadata, including ratings and keywords. So does your post-processing, and the ability to make basic edits to photo files using the Quick Develop panel. You can also export your photos any time you want.

oof so anon, i don't know if i could put it in the middle of the screenshots. photo posts just,,,,,,, don't really work like that, on desktop anyway. i post everything on desktop so adding links and fixing the text formatting is easier (and then, if i need to go through and fix something, like updating the summary or what have you, i don't have to bounce back and forth between my phone and my computer)

but on desktop, the only way to have the photos not be stacked one on top of the other (which is absurdly long lmao and then becomes a pain in the ass for me when trying to update formatting later) is to put them in the photo post section at the top of the post, and you can't put a keep reading in the middle of it

in theory i could put several screenshots into the same image (as in, photoshop them together like i do when i have more than ten images), but those are annoying to read and i'd like to avoid that as much as possible, just cause i think it's annoying for me (usually means at minimum an extra twenty minutes photoshopping) and the reader (zooming sucks and then moving to the next image is harder)

It doesn’t quite hit the high notes of Apple’s bigger iPads, but the iPad Mini 4 still benefits from an attractive metal design, a fast processor, and a great app and game library. You’ll find the 7.9-inch display is a pleasure to read on, and it’s size and weight make it comfortable to hold. It’s good for watching movies or gaming, too, though you’ll probably want headphones to go with it. Battery life is solid, offering a good 10 hours between charges. Portability is the reason to pick the iPad Mini 4. If you want an iPad and need something smaller in size, then this is it. Unfortunately, it’s not just the size that has been scaled down here — the iPad Mini 4 is not as lightning fast as its bigger siblings. Amazon’s Fire HD 8 (2018), a refresh of last year’s HD 8, doesn’t bring much new to the table. The front-facing camera has jumped from 0.3 megapixels to 2 megapixels and there’s hands-free support for Alexa now, but it’s the low, low price that earns this tablet a wholehearted recommendation. The LCD screen, with its 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution is far from the sharpest, and the viewing angles aren’t great, but it’s good enough to watch movies and read on. Following our seminar, i have reflected on issues which personally upset me and i would find intriguing to find out more information about. 

What is creative activism?

“Artistic Activism is a dynamic practice combining the creative power of the arts to move us emotionally with the strategic planning of activism necessary to bring about social change”

Grace and i have decided that we want to take a controversial approach in which the way we display our campaign will be the opposite of what it is trying to say, in order to make the viewer reflect on this. Much like in “The Phantom of Liberty” by Lewis Bunuel where eating is seen to be a private matter and going to the toilet is a communal and public occurrence. 

I wanted to reflect back on the topics we discussed in our lectures and relate this back to the project in order to show a fuller understanding. 

IDEAS

Topics we could relate to: Performance art, production value and taste, stuff and things, space and non-place

My favourite: the implications of HEAVILY edited magazine covers / model photos used in advertising. This relates to the concept of the “Self” which we discussed in one of the weekly seminars if you are altering someone to the extent which changes their features, is this still the “same” person? This also links in with Grace’s idea of how websites display plus-size models inaccurately. The general issue is that when we view these images, we get a false expectation of how we should look.

Aim- to promote a healthier depiction of both females AND MALES, this is not soley an issue with woman. 

How- We could do several photoshoots, displaying the before and after editing together in poster form. A video of the process of altering someone’s features. A magazine where we call out for submissions of people’s natural photography. 

This is not just people focused, this is an issue in product advertising- often food is manipulated to make it more appealing. Arguably this is less of an issue since it does not impact mental health in the same way. Yet this is still deceiving: 

IDEA 2 | Similarly,  food which is considered to be “imperfect” in appearance, is often cheaper in supermarkets or not available to the consumer- is this a waste?

IDEA 3| Materialism- links to production, value and taste. How we as consumers are extensively buying things we don’t need, whereas some people live on the basics. Could relate to local homeless people in plymouth.

Final stretch

of January.

Holy damn it’s been a long month. 5 weeks! It’s really hard to wait for spring and summer because I’m really looking forward to my new summer house being finished and getting to furnish it. ♥

We started our 2019 by visiting my guy’s grandparents for his grandpa’s 80th birthday. It was really nice seeing my guy’s cousins from his mum’s side and get to hang out with my guy’s whole family as well. Usually one or more of them are missing so this time it was all of us together. We played board games and ate so much tasty food. I’m going as vegan as possible (excluding the occasional dairy and eggs) and trying to avoid wheat so it was a bit of a struggle but I’m proud of how well I did. The roads were very icy on our way there and our car did a 180 at one point but nothing bad happened and we got to change lanes safely. Both me and my guy got a really bad flu right after Christmas break ended that took us both out for almost 2 weeks.

On the 10th of January my new sleeping cottage was finally transported to our summer house. It was such an exciting Thursday that focusing at work was really difficult and I kept refreshing my email for any updates from the process. Everything went well and they managed to lower the cottage on the foundation safely despite the crazy amounts of snow and trees bent over the road. Waiting until Saturday to go see it in person was really difficult but it was so worth it! It was the sunniest and nicest day and everything looked gorgeous. ☼ The new cottage is the cutest and most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen and the forest around looked magical with all the snow covering the trees.

We had a campfire going and did some cleanup from after the construction workers. We baked delicious treats on the campfire and had coffee/warm berry juice. I never wanted to leave.. ♥ All of Sunday I felt really irritated and depressed from seeing so much beauty in one day, but it was worth the beauty-hangover. Now I just have to have patience to wait until March/April for the snow to melt. They’re going to fix some damage done during the transportation, finish building the porch on site and finish work inside. I’ve already started to shop for furniture and written a list of things I need to buy for my new house! I really hope for a sunny summer...

Last weekend me and my friend finally got to continue my photography project. Photography makes me so incredibly happy and bringing out my camera for the first time in months got me super inspired. I’ve been watching a lot of Irene Rudnyk’s videos on YouTube and it is really inspiring to see that a lot of the techniques that I’ve learned over the years through trial and error are also used by actual professional photographers. Even though her style of portrait photography isn’t what I personally prefer her videos have taught me a lot about posing my model and looking for good angles as well as a bunch of useful photoshop and retouch tricks. Anyway my firend was dressed as a Little Red Riding Hood-ish character with a red velvet cape that I pinned on her with safety pins, and we went to a snowy forest to shoot some really cute photos. I started editing them last night and I’m hoping to finish today. I was also inspired to re-edit the results of our last photoshoot and I’ve done a lot more planning for future ones. It’s just probably going to take until July-ish. Another thing that I have to be patient and wait for.. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to shoot other photos in the meantime. I’m definitely wanting to carry my camera with me a lot more as I’ve been lazy and very married to my phone camera lately. I didn’t buy a 500€ camera to keep it in the camera bag - especially when taking photos with an actual camera gets me feeling this alive and inspired. ♥

Work has been going well as per usual. We’ve had a chill month before the craziness of trainings and technical help starts in February/March, and I’ve been enjoying my long lunch breaks, crossword puzzles and Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.

This past week has been really cold and putting on several layers of ski-pants and thick coats many times a day takes an effort. Because of the -15 to -22 Celsius weathers I also haven’t been able to go skiing at all. On the plus side everything looks beautiful.☼  It’s this time of the year that makes winter worth it even though I’m always cold. Since it’s around midsummer on the southern hemisphere oranges are really tasty this time of year and that’s what I always look forward to.

So we’re 26 days into 2019 and still have no news on Animal Crossing for the Switch. ANOTHER thing to wait patiently for.. It really seems like time’s CRAWLING forward. I’ve been listening to a lot of ACNL hourly music (my favourites are probably 8pm, 1am, 3am and 8am) and imagining what the new game might bring... I just really hope that it’s good and won’t be a nightmare of microtransactions, paid online services and an integration into ACPC that renders amiibo useless. It’s both exciting and scary to wait for information to drop.

I finally signed up for graduation this May. Mum and grandmum are both working on my skirt, shirt and jacket and it feels so special having these important women create my outfit from scratch. We got a really cute jacket pattern and made a test version that looked really nice. I can’t wait to see the outfit come together. I’m also really hoping that my friend’s boyfriend signs up for graduation as well so that the four of us can go to the dinner dance together. It would be a lot of fun. Dance rehearsals start in a few weeks.

I’m going to continue photo editing and in the afternoon I’m doing my guy’s sister’s hair for a fancy event she has tonight. I’ll get to see my dear bunny friend again for the first time in almost a year. ♥ My guy is out of town for the weekend so I’m trying to get everything that requires my PC done. We’ve been playing the Witcher III basically whenever both of us are at home and that means my PC is occupied on most days. My guy goes side questing and plays gwent whenever I’m not home, and I join him for any interesting and/or main story missions. It’s a good system because I still can’t really relate to Geralt and am not that immersed into the world. It’s like starting Mass Effect 3 with someone else’s Shepard. Speaking of BioWare, the Anthem VIP demo dropped - as did EA:s servers. This doesn’t bode well for #TheDreadWolfRises but let’s hope people have a short memory and Anthem sells well despite this hickup...

It doesn’t matter whether you want to improve your mobile website or your desktop website, speed is something you need to monitor and improve all the time. These are fast times, and speed is definitely what you want to optimize for.

In a simple breakdown of speed optimization, we have images, browser caching, and script optimization. Both PageSpeed Insights and Pingdom will tell you that. Another factor that plays a role in speed optimization is text compression with GZIP. But in my opinion, that should be enabled by default. Let’s have a look at the other three:

Image file size optimization

Optimizing your file size can increase the speed of your site and is also an important part of image SEO. So let’s start there. Here are a few steps you can take to optimize your file size:

Optimize the image file size in Photoshop (or any other image editing program you use). Usually, just exporting the image in a lower quality will do the trick. I usually check whether reducing the quality to around 80% of the original still gives me a crisp image.

Are you sure you need that enhancement? JS and CSS usually target design and user experience. In some cases, you just don’t need that enhancement. Like JS and CSS loaded for sliders, for instance. There are alternatives to sliders that work better and don’t require extra files.

Is there a way to reduce the file size of your scripts/styles? We call this process ‘minifying’ and explain this further in an Ask Yoast video. Google has some great pointers on how to approach this. Simple scripts and handy websites can help you minify your files, for instance by stripping comments. Most platforms have plugins or extensions that help with this. To give an example, Magento has the Fooman Speedster (free and paid) for that.

Is it possible to combine a number of these scripts into one file? That way, there only has to be one call to the server to retrieve all the scripts. Again, there are plugins for that, but if you have small pieces of JS, you might as well combine these yourself. Of course, HTTP/2 changed some of these optimization practices. If I visit a photographer’s website, I can assume that I’m in for longer loading times. When visiting this type of website, I want crisp images and that’s the price I pay. So be sure to optimize to an acceptable level for your target audience.

Write great content

This goes for the mobile and desktop version of your site: they need great content. A quick win for mobile content is to add a to-the-point first paragraph on every page. If you tell your visitor what’s on your page, they can decide for themselves if they want to scroll down or not. This is easily done and definitely benefits the experience of your visitor.

And of course, the content that comes after this first paragraph needs to be awesome as well. To tackle that, you’ll need to do keyword research, set up a great site structure and decide on cornerstone content. But you can imagine that this is a slightly lengthier process, and we’re talking quick wins here

#3 Serve your content in the right format

There are so many ways to serve your content to Google, Facebook and your visitors. Your task is to investigate which formats you should invest in. Some take a bit more time to implement; others can be added to your website by the push of a button, like with a plugin. Let’s go over a few important ones.

Are you sure you need that enhancement? JS and CSS usually target design and user experience. In some cases, you just don’t need that enhancement. Like JS and CSS loaded for sliders, for instance. There are alternatives to sliders that work better and don’t require extra files.

Is there a way to reduce the file size of your scripts/styles? We call this process ‘minifying’ and explain this further in an Ask Yoast video. Google has some great pointers on how to approach this. Simple scripts and handy websites can help you minify your files, for instance by stripping comments. Most platforms have plugins or extensions that help with this. To give an example, Magento has the Fooman Speedster (free and paid) for that.

Is it possible to combine a number of these scripts into one file? That way, there only has to be one call to the server to retrieve all the scripts. Again, there are plugins for that, but if you have small pieces of JS, you might as well combine these yourself. Of course, HTTP/2 changed some of these optimization practices. Make sure to test this!

#2 Mobile optimization

It’s quite tempting to copy our ultimate guide to mobile SEO here, but let’s focus on the quick wins. An important reason to focus on mobile SEO Company these days is Google’s mobile-first index. Since July 2019, Google determines rankings based on the quality of the mobile version of a site instead of your desktop version. So, let’s get that mobile version up and running, right?

Task-based design

Have a look at your mobile website. Imagine you are a fresh, new user of your website. What would that user want to do here and is your site ready for that? Focus on a task-based design. If someone visits a mobile website, they might need opening hours or an address. Just a while ago, I purchased tickets for the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum on my mobile phone. Saved a buck and didn’t have to get in line for tickets. I did this, walking from my car to the entrance. One needs to be able to complete these basic tasks without any problem. Ask yourself what the four, perhaps five, main goals of a visitor on your site are and make sure these can be achieved on your mobile website.

Performance-based design

Are you loading any huge images on your site? Do people have to scroll for ages to read what you have to offer them? On a mobile website, we want to find what we need and get out as fast as possible – unless it’s, for instance, a news website. Loading time is a factor on mobile sites, especially with mobile connections usually being slower than most desktop connections. Make sure your design and content don’t depend on large images too much. And yes, of course, there are exceptions to that rule. If I visit a photographer’s website, I can assume that I’m in for longer loading times. When visiting this type of website, I want crisp images and that’s the price I pay. So be sure to optimize to an acceptable level for your target audience.

Write great content

This goes for the mobile and desktop version of your site: they need great content. A quick win for mobile content is to add a to-the-point first paragraph on every page. If you tell your visitor what’s on your page, they can decide for themselves if they want to scroll down or not. This is easily done and definitely benefits the experience of your visitor.

And of course, the content that comes after this first paragraph needs to be awesome as well. To tackle that, you’ll need to do keyword research, set up a great site structure and decide on cornerstone content. But you can imagine that this is a slightly lengthier process, and we’re talking quick wins here

#3 Serve your content in the right format

There are so many ways to serve your content to Google, Facebook and your visitors. Your task is to investigate which formats you should invest in. Some take a bit more time to implement; others can be added to your website by the push of a button, like with a plugin. Let’s go over a few important ones.

Better social sharing: Open Graph

Forget about Twitter Cards for now, as Twitter has a fallback to Open Graph. So, add Open Graph to your website if you haven’t done this already. It’s like a social summary of your website. To give you an example, for our homepage it reads (among other things):

There’s a page/site title and a summary plus link, which tells Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter all it needs to know to create a great post on your visitor’s timeline. The og:image creates a richer experience. Be sure to add this. Again, use a plugin like Yoast SEO for TYPO3 to automate the process (and add these Twitter Cards along with Open Graph in no time).

Quick reads on other platforms: AMP

Accelerated Mobile Pages or AMP, aim to strip your website to the bare necessities to deliver your reader the best mobile experience they can get. If they want to read your article, AMP will give them just your article in basic design. If you want to check a certain product, AMP will strip much of the heavy loading stuff from the store to deliver something more focused. Is this a bad thing? I think not. Every way you can help your visitor get a better experience increases the chance of them coming back to your content and site. It might even increase sales because it’s so focused. I suggest reading up on AMP and getting your site ready — if you want. Again: plugins will help you out with this!

Tell Google what your page is about: Schema.org

I will end this list of quick SEO Company wins with something we’ve been telling you about for quite some time: add Schema.org to your website. Structured data, like Open Graph and Schema.org, create a convenient summary of your website for every other site or search engine that wants to use your content. Schema.org data is one of the main types of structured data. JSON-LD gives us a convenient way of adding it to our website.
