Happy harvest moon!
It’s time to put down roots.
I managed to do most of my mid-autumn cleaning (which also happened to be my first major cleanup since moving!). Summer’s stagnant energy is all out, and we’ve gotten some new furniture and decor in. I was able to air out rugs and bedding too, and it feels so good to take everything out for the first time after allergy season.
Summer was very busy and we were both constantly on the go with short little visits back home for a rest and resupply. With the start of September I have finally been able to put down some roots and get to know my new house and surroundings better. It doesn’t feel so much like temporary storage anymore, although it still doesn’t feel completely like home yet. I’m still quite overwhelmed (mostly in a good way!) and can’t believe I actually live here. Also I’m definitely hoping that everything goes well this autumn and winter, and we won’t collapse under our heating bills. We just put up a carbon monoxide alarm and bought a fire extinguisher in preparation for fireplace season.
We’ve got a new sofa and a new table. Mum and I spent all of Sunday shopping and at night (after getting my favourite mushroom pizza) we stained grandmum’s old dresser a darker shade of brown. It was incredibly difficult and awkward to do in the small shower room so the finish wasn’t great but at least it looks hand made. The fumes from the stain were a lot! I can’t wait to get the dresser in my office so that my space will finally be complete.
This autumn I was able to fulfill a small dream of mine and get a food dehydrator. I’ve been drying a lot of apples and even some mushrooms with it. It has been an incredible season for mushrooms and I’ve had some delicious chanterelle sauce, mushroom risotto and shepherd’s pie. I’ve also made many apple pies and crumbles, and a berry pie. I’m hoping to make a carrot cake today to celebrate harvest moon and tomorrow’s equinox. I can’t wait to put up Halloween decorations and invite friends over!
I miss my ballet friend so much since she’s gone back to school abroad. Going to class without her is sad even though we have a very nice group. I’m currently trying to hunt down new pointe shoes but they are out of stock pretty much everywhere, and I have no way of going to a store to try new ones since the closest dance stores are at least a 2 hour drive away.
I’ve been going to body combat classes on Wednesdays and even though leaving home and biking back and forth is a lot, going in and working out with other people and getting to chat with our instructor in real life has been so much fun. I’ve definitely not regretted going, and it gets me out of the house. I also have a friend who comes to class with me and we’ve had a lot of fun together. We’ve had private online workouts in a Facebook group all summer and it’s been so much fun to get to know our instructor and the others online, but there definitely are benefits to irl workouts as well.
Some big changes are coming work wise and I’ve definitely been thinking about applying for PhD studies alongside work. I am starting to miss doing research and I feel like doing something for myself. Yes, it would eat up a bunch of my current free time but I feel like it might be manageable. Also because I would be studying alongside work I can take as much time as I can because I wouldn’t be working within the constraints of grants or university funding. I’m going to ask a friend from my BA and MA studies if he would like to join me in PhD studies as well - that would be fun. The application period is in April so I have until then to think about it. I might be contacting my MA thesis supervisor sometime at the end of the year to ask for his opinion.
I cannot wait to go to our summer house this weekend. Hopefully the weather is nice and we can go.. I am working on a new video project with my fancy Canon EOS 90D and I can’t wait to get more footage. And to see the fall foliage.
