I love Richard Avedon's psychedelic portrait of John and have wanted to replicate it for the longest time. I probs won't get around to the solarization/colour until finals are over, but here's what I've got so far
#I took this pic almost two years ago lol#so that's how long my creative projects languish on the back burner... it's called adhd and grad school#and I'd looove to do this properly like with analog film#but I know nothing about photography#and the photog/darkroom classes near me are expensive!#and the initial pic is digital anyway#so photoshop it is#my posts#john lennon#richard avedon

Okay but can I get a Wednesday x reader on how her and Wednesday argue when it gets really bad💕 maybe reader walks out and they both make up after giving each other space
𝐒𝐏𝐀𝐂𝐄 -> w. addams
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hi yes???? I love this so much?????? Healthy relationships?????? Thank you so much for your wonderful words???? But seriously I love this kind of angsty fluff stuff fr...this is how I survive in this cruel, cruel world HAHA. Also I'm pretty sure I've used the phrase "thaw her frozen heart" in a Wednesday fic before, but oh well! I'm a sucker for stuff like that. Hope you enjoy this one! I'm really proud of this :') (Also peep the little gif paragraph break thingie I made on Photoshop...I'm a little too proud of it...)
PAIRING: wednesday addams x gn!reader WARNINGS: arguing
ARGUING WITH WEDNESDAY ADDAMS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. She's as sadistic as they come, even when not mildly discontented (which in Wednesday Speak is as close as you can get to happy), and she never backs down from a fight. And, though a lot of Wednesday's sharp edges become a bit dull around you, that doesn't mean that she'll let you win an argument.
"You can't just endanger someone's life because they bother me, Wednesday!" you shouted. That particular argument was nasty — while you and Wednesday fit together seamlessly most of the time, she occasionally did things that you just couldn't agree with.
This time Wednesday's target had been Leah. Leah was one of the Scales, and one of the more insufferable ones at that. For the past week or so, Leah had for some reason chosen you as the target of her constant torture. She tripped you during class, used her siren song to make you humiliate yourself in front of the school, and on one occasion even managed to push you down the main staircase without anyone around her seeing. Wednesday had seen, of course. Wednesday always saw.
So she concocted a plan: she sent Leah a fake letter in her boyfriend's handwriting, telling her to meet him at a very specific location in the woods near Nevermore. As expected, Leah took the bait and made her way deep into the woods after dark. Instead of finding her boyfriend there, she was met with a pack of hungry wolves — and she quickly noticed that someone had sewn raw meat into the pockets of her clothing.
Leah returned to school half an hour later — out of breath, scratched around the ankles, and terrified. Wednesday watched her return with a smug grin — all it took was one look at her and you knew instantly this had been her doing.
Wednesday hadn't really expected you to be pleased (she had made peace with the fact that you two had very different moral codes), but she certainly hadn't expected you to react like this. "I only inflict pain upon people who deserve it," she said, her monotone voice never wavering in resolve, "and Leah deserved it."
"You don't get to decide that!" you said, rage curling your hands into fists.
"Would you rather be pushed around and ridiculed for the rest of the semester?"
You opened your mouth to speak, but your throat constricted and tears rushed to your waterline before you could get a word out. You paused, taking in a breath and willing your voice to steady. "I don't need you to fight my battles, Wednesday. If you can't respect that, then..." you trailed off, not quite sure where you were going next. Then maybe this isn't going to work out. You stopped yourself just short of putting the end in sight, not wanting to say something you didn't really believe and might regret later. Instead, you bit down on your tongue hard enough to draw blood. You blinked the tears away as you took one last look at Wednesday's stoic face and walked out, slamming the door to her dorm room behind you.
Wednesday watched you go with a bitter taste on her tongue — and not the kind she liked. You had had your arguments in the past, but you had never walked out on her. Unlike Wednesday, you were a stickler for talking things out right then and there, clearing the air before things got too ugly. But this time it had been too much. She had been too much.
Thing crawled onto the desk, having heard the entire argument. Wednesday turned sharply. "What do you want?" she snapped.
"I hope you're going to fix this."
"Why? Clearly they don't care enough to stay and have it out. Why should I be the one to piece things back together?"
Thing said nothing, but sat there in a way that said, Really?
Wednesday grit her teeth. "You're very passive aggressive for a hand."
"You're one to talk," Thing tapped back, "and ouch. Don't you think they might've needed some space?"
Wednesday paused. She hadn't thought of that, actually — not that she'd ever let Thing know that. "Fine then," Wednesday conceded. "What do you suggest?"
And, for once, Wednesday took someone else's advice.
She gave you the space you needed. For the next day and a half you received total radio silence from Wednesday. She still took her seat next to you in class, but she kept as far away from you as possible and didn't attempt conversation — not that Wednesday could ever endure small talk.
Eventually you were so unnerved by her behavior that you spoke to her, leaning over and keeping your voice to a whisper beneath Thornhill's lesson. "Wednesday? What are you doing? Are you alright?" you asked.
"I'm giving you space," she said, not meeting your eye. The words sounded unnatural in her voice. "Thing suggested it," she added quickly.
You sat back in your chair, a perplexed crease forming between your brows. This was very un-Wednesday like behavior. You weren't upset of course, just surprised. Not only at the fact that Wednesday was willingly giving you the space you needed, but that she actually took advice from Thing. It made your heart give a little flutter as you attempted to focus back on the lesson.
Wednesday never paced, but she had never been closer to doing it than she was that evening. She skipped dinner with the intention of writing her novel, but found herself staring at a blank page, unable to write a thing. Rain pounded the large stained glass window on the opposite side of the room. She had never suffered from writer's block before. This was excruciating, and not in a good way. She let out a slow breath, and finally something snapped. That's it.
She got up and strode to the door of her dorm with the intention of meeting you in the courtyard and demanding that you settle your argument from two nights ago, a crack of thunder scoring her sudden outburst. But just as she was about to reach for the doorknob, she heard a knock.
You stood out in the hallway, shivering and soaked with rain, your blazer wrapped tightly around you. The greeting you had prepared was quickly tossed away as you gave a sudden sneeze, a shiver running down your spine. You looked back at Wednesday and the words died on your tongue.
Instantly she pulled you inside, shutting the door behind you and getting one of Enid's fuzzy (revolting) blankets to wrap around your shoulders. Wednesday didn't often have these, God forbid, motherly urges very often, but again, a lot of things about Wednesday changed when she was around you. And the sight of you shaking in the cold on her doorstep was enough to thaw her frozen heart.
Once she was satisfied that you were slowly being warmed up, she stepped back, letting you dry the rain droplets from your cheeks and hair. Thing subtly crawled onto the desk and Wednesday saw it subtly sign out of the corner of her eye: "Talk."
Wednesday set her lips in a grim line. This was the part she always had trouble with. "Y/n —"
"I know you were just trying to protect me, Wednesday," you cut her off quickly. "I know that now, and I appreciate it. I didn't like what Leah was doing, and I know you didn't either, but I needed to try and figure out how to fix it in my own way first. I know that you want to look out for me, but I'm capable of fighting my own battles. I need you to tell me that you understand that."
Wednesday paused. And now she understood. This was what you had been trying to say the night of the argument — you just hadn't been able to get the words out right. Space. Space had allowed you to understand what you needed to say and what you needed to hear. Wednesday understood that now — and more importantly, she could respect it. "I understand," she said, "and I'm sorry."
You almost gasped. Wednesday rarely apologized for the things she did, especially to the people she did them to. But this was genuine.
She continued, "I don't regret what I did to Leah, but I do regret that it hurt you."
You nodded in understanding.
"I don't like seeing the people I love get hurt."
All at once you felt tears rushing to your eyes. Not the bad kind. You pushed them away with a hard swallow, sniffing. "I love you too, Wednesday," you said. "And I promise that if my way of fixing something doesn't work, you'll be the first person I call."
Wednesday felt a rush of something then, something that flushed in her cheeks and almost drew the corners of her lips up. She struggled to stifle it, but every glance at your rosy face made her that much more willing to surrender to it.
"Can I give you a hug?" you asked. You and Wednesday had reached a point where you could hug her without asking first, but you liked to get the clarification every once in a while.
Once you received a brisk nod, you stepped forward, wrapping your arms around her and enveloping both of you in Enid's thick purple blanket. Wednesday wrapped her arms around your waist, letting herself bury her head in your shoulder. She allowed herself to enjoy the warmth of being wrapped up with you, holding you tightly and knowing that you were together.
The storm continued to rage outside, but you two were warm and safe in the knowledge that, when you were together, there was nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Learning to Draw #1 - :)
My Manifesto that will be read as I lay destruction to The Works
I'm in my late 20s. I'm doing this because I can't find anyone else showing a similar process as a genuine sucky beginner. I used to draw a bit in my early teens. Slated for greatness at my art GCSE, a master of using the ruler for two-point perspective, I could achieve an 'A' they said - if I chose it - and I bet you're wondering how I got here... At home I drew my favourite anime characters. They weren't good, but whatever. I drew Itachi from Naruto and was so happy with this one that I took it to my parents to use their scanner. I subtly wanted to show it off, but I said I thought it would be cool if I scan it and colour it in on my cracked version of Photoshop CS5.
All I remember is they both saw it and had a good laugh at Itachi's hand. "It looks like E.T - 'phone home'". I didn't colour it in, and don't think I drew anything after that. The GCSE Art I took was bizarrely thin on teaching theory/skills and more about trying out a variety of creative mixed media - textured collages, pottery, and the like. I didn't draw a single thing and somehow achieved a B.
So anyway, I kept wishing I knew how to draw. Not as a professional or anything. Just enough to convey a sketch of an idea on the page that didn't look weird. What inspired me to pick it up again was some of the artwork in the RPG book for 'Warlock'. Thought it was rad as fuck. Wish I could do that.
Figuring out how to do this has sucked so much ass. So many 'beginners' post absolutely passable drawings to undermine your confidence, or they bait you in and say "yeah, I'm learning to draw...I stopped a few years ago when I finished up with Sistine Chapel". Fuckers. One egregious example was on the 'learntodraw' subreddit where someone said their husband started drawing a 'week ago', presenting a near photo-realistic image. Later admitting after backlash that their husband had only just started 'taking it seriously this week, but has drawn before'.
All the other guidance essentially consists of happy-go-lucky 'just draw :)' or locked-in 'drawing is like working out, put the reps in'. In-between are mentions of 'the fundamentals' but the best way to learn these are???
A few months ago I attempted 'Draw a Box'. I gave up because I'll be honest, it is incredibly boring to spend your evenings drawing 250 boxes, cylinders, and then once you finally think you're onto the interesting stuff you get asked to do several pages of arrows. I still hadn't drawn anything apart from basic shapes.
The structure was good for me though, so I thought let's buy an online art class. The course recommends joining their community and sharing your first work, which you must draw 'from your mind'. Here is Chroknight. This took approx 2 hours of really trying. This was still attempting to incorporate ideas about perspective and breaking down shapes I had heard about from Draw a Box. So this probably shows a month of learning. This is what I want to see when I look for a beginners journey.
I did this for a bit and drew some heads before becoming so fucking angry at the entire process. "People can be broken down into very basic shapes - squares, circles, triangles". Yet what really happens is a lot of complex rules around curving, avoiding tangent lines, and so on. I watch as the 'forms' get drawn in and say "okay, how the fuck do you make that look like a person?". My forms were often weirdly askew so I tried to correct them. The heads just don't look right. I was really struggling to spot that my forms were so wrong that it wasn't until I got to the details or the end that I was like "oh, wow this is really off". People who can draw say "just make sure your forms are correct first", and I get it - but often I can't tell until I start putting features on.
I know they're not like if you just picked up a pencil for the first time. This was around 2-3 months of learning. I was really feeling angry and impatient that after drilling facial features and head forms that they still looked so weird and were taking a significant amount of time to draw. Each of these took at least an hour. Could've watched X-Files.
"This is why an understanding of anatomy is so important" the instructor says on their demo. Proceeding to practically, to my untrained eye, ignore their forms and freely draw 'skin lines' to indicate anatomy. How do I do that? "Study anatomy". The assignment for this part of the course is to draw each body part 'until memorised'. More grinding. I was too angry and couldn't face it.
So here I am a few months on. I am going to restart the course and actually begin 'grinding'. Drawing regularly, from reference, whatever. I am banning myself from artist YouTube videos about how they learn because these people are already great and their advice amounts to variations of studying/grinding or even worse "learning to love art again". I am also leaving the communities full of people posting things I can only aspire to and saying "any feedback UnU?", "why do I suck? :(".

Seren's Studies: Odd Squad UK -- "Agent Overhill's Last Day" Episode Followup, Part 1
The One That Got Away On Agent Overhill's Last Day.
Hey, it's a bit wordy, but they could fit it on the folder if they tried! Plus it rhymes!
Well, anyway. We're nearing the end, folks. Shame it only lasted for less than a month, but hopefully kids and parents alike will view episodes enough times to where it will get greenlit for a Season 2/Season 5. With more episodes. More better-written episodes. Please.
Let's get down below the break for another episode featuring a one-shot. Because in 12 episodes, we have enough room for a one-shotter episode.
Heeeeeeey, Athena's back!
...I mean look, so long as it isn't Omar or Tasha, I think we're good.
*slow blink in "memory loss not a thing in the oddverse?"*
AND FUCKIN' SPEAKIN' OF MEMORY LOSS.
"No, I don't want to cure dementia, or Alzheimer's! I want to make people remember how to ride bikes!"
It's like having a cure for cancer in the palm of your hands and using it for the most trivial shit imaginable. (And if you get that reference, brava to you.)
Well hey, at least he's on grassy terrain and has protective gear on. So, y'know...there's that.
Brain fart happening right now, but I could have sworn there was a gag just like this alrea- oh.
Now I remember, it was in "Who is Agent Otis?"
And funny enough, it was Oprah who needed help with the pickle jar AND SON OF A BITCH SOMEONE BROUGHT THAT SHIT UP IN THE WRITERS ROOM HUH.
(That aside, though, does...does the organization manufacture their own pickles? It's not Shmumbers or some UK-equivalent branding?)
Ahhhh Captain O, they could never make me hate you.
It's like she gave Orwell the jar knowing she went through strength training and that son of a gun can't open it!
See, it's funny because we already got "Villain X" in the form of Xavier and Xena. This guy is just proudly declaring he's a villain and doesn't work for Odd Squad.
Yeeeeeah, I dunno, guy...those just look like pictures of sunglasses.
On a side note, you guys think a villain could use Photoshop to say "I caused oddness" when they didn't do anything? If they were really that dumb enough, I bet they could. (I mean, if my dumb ass took a Photoshop class in high school and got a passing grade...)
Okay, that's...uh...an impressive display of lapels. Did she spend time in every department or are they like Sunny Starscout's G4 character pins and mean nothing?
See, where this franchise tends to fail to draw the line is distinguishing odd things from odd people.
Solving oddness is arguably easier than catching odd villains. They are mutually exclusive because it's symbiotic, but to a certain degree.
Orwell here seems to think that, since Overhill solved odd things, she can catch an odd villain. Perhaps not so, but I'll let status quo bring the gavel down on that.
"I wish I had your positivity."
He's supposed to be a stoic man. And you can have positivity with a stoic man, but this just makes me wonder how the season would change if Orwell were a sourpuss with a stoic voice.
Man, it's like this season just threw the entire fucking concept of departments out the fucking window, huh?
I mean, it's nice we're getting Orwell focus...but Ocean and Oona were paired together and they aren't partners because, if I remember correctly, Oprah never referred to them as partners.
Again, I will reiterate: when Oprah does this, it's impactful. It has bite, because she's a ball of anger in the body of a child.
When Captain O does this, it has no bite because she is not a ball of anger in the body of a child; she is a ball of sass in the body of a child.
Be reminded that this is the second time they have pried traits out of Oprah and plopped them into similar characters like it means anything. At least with Captain O, it fits more than Orpita...
AGEHA HIJIRI'S PRESENCE LIVES O- oh. No, wait, that was last year...
KOMUGI INUKAI'S PRESENCE LIVES ON!!!!
You don't send a dumb child to do a smart child's job, Captain O. That's just basic common sense.
(I would make a Cracker Barrel crack here, but I don't think they have those in the UK.)
Okay, to be fair, that's more threatening than sunglasses.
Big-ass mosquitos, though, would be a bigger threat.
YEEEEEEEAH BOMB THAT MASTER HILL MARTY MCFLY WILLIAMS. BOMB IT REAL GOOD, GO FAST, CATCH VILLAIN X!!!
No, no, honey, the bigger question is why you're wearing a robe with a hood on it. Here in America that's robber wear!
No...no, Seren, don't make the yuri joke...no don't...no...
...FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK IT.
This joke would have been better if he made a joke about how his wife left him for something odd...y'know, like a bunny...
But alas, this is a PBS Kids show where Valentine's Day is 100% strictly platonic.
"...Orli, why are we here?"
"Our contracts say we have to have at least 30 seconds of screentime per episode."
"And we're spending it playing table football?"
"Look, you don't have a Boys and Girls Club here, so I have to make do!"
Charlie Change sounds more like the name of a money-based villain than that of a shapeshifting one.
But y'know...in 12 episodes, do you really want them to go into the financial logistics of this universe?
Okay, first of all, do either of you even fuckin' lift?
And second of all, you two need to be on both sides. And preferably have two more people helping you. TF do you think you're gonna accomplish if you're both on one side, bashing his head into the cement floor?
Ohhhhh and he's got vaporizing powers so he's speeeeeeechuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- yo me into the fucking ocean.
At least this lady's more properly dressed for the outdoors.
The way I fuckin' cackled at Orwell's "Oh, come on!" here.
Look, the man has a limp and uses a scooter as an assistive mobility device. You can't hate him.
Man, I do so love they're dropping all this stuff about this agent we've never heard of before and will never hear of again.
...Okay, the dollhouse furniture-making hobby is cute, I'll admit, BUT STILL-
Osgood, what the fuck did you think would happen? You're throwin' yourself into a volcano here!
woman doesn't get what villain x is saying
she's wearing a hoodie with hourglasses on it
Check yourself, honey.
(On to Part 2!)

Hello Noir!
Congrats, you've been visited by your LU Self Care Anon!
I hope you had a great day, and if not, don't worry, you did your best, and tomorrow's full of new possibilities!
Have you drank enough water? It can really help your body and mind feeling well! Also, remember to get enough sleep, did you know underground rooms are often the freshest in the house? I can assure you there's at least a 2F difference between my basement and my ground floor. It really makes a difference in hot days!
What have you been working on lately? Would you like to show me a wip, or describe it? I'm sure it'll turn out amazing, even if you now think it's nowhere near good!
You can do this! Believe in yourself, you're awesome!
You know what's funny? I got this ask on my last day of class, as I was in the airport to fly home for my semester break. Now that I turned in my last exam- my college Summer Semester of over! Woo Woo! To be honest, I've been very busy with college work- I go back for the fall semester in two and a half weeks. XD -I've definitely not been drinking enough water, but I've been trying my best. -Sleep is for the weak! As an Animation student, sleep doesn't exist! -I've been living in a dorm- which does NOT in fact have air conditioning for the past few months... I'm used to the heat. It doesn't even reach 70F there often enough so it's not terrible. Normally stays in the 60s (F). I'm home now, so the warm weather is actually super nice to experience, and what do you know? We have air conditioning! What have I been working on recently? (Insert canceled LU MAP part gif)
Well, other than some class work... I did a bit of ArtFight, as I do every year, it was my fourth year this time around! I couldn't accomplish much because I was so busy though. :( I finished up my animation exam, have I told you how much I hate After Effects? I hate it even more than Photoshop, and that's saying something. Haha. (Here's that film: thanks @snowcapmt , for aiding me with it!)
This was a RUSH work, I only had four days to do it (inbetween classes), and one of those days was spent traveling across the country home! I worked on it in the airport! I really wish I had time to make it more polished. *sobs* (Me in the airport)
I've been trying to catch up on some art requests in my ask box, trust me. I'll get to more of them soon. :D I should have some time to work on some LU related content... Have I mentioned I'm an artist in the upcoming Zelda Zine? Look forward to that! Anyhow, thanks for asking, and with such great timing too. lol. -Noir

today I went to a drag show put on by my colleges gsa. the only one in drag was the gsa president. I had thought about putting on an outfit with a skirt on but a lot of people I know would be there, and I don’t want the cis people in my life to associate me with femininity. I'm friends with the gsa president, I make him lunch nearly every day since I work at the college café, we sit next to each other in class, worked on a project together, and chatted a bit on discord. on discord he told me about the drag show.
Someone had posted a picture of their flyer to twitter, and our state representative quote tweeted the post with the caption “call to action!”. When he told me that I started to dig around the original posters twitter account, the person would have to be at my college. the original poster had tweeted some other concerning and borderline threats about trans people, the college board, women, democrats, the works. a republican with a bit of a Nazi twist. comparing every group he doesn't like to them. having joe bidden photoshopped over Hitler in front of a swastika.
Since I found it I’d be repeatedly frantically scrolling through this dudes twitter to keep tabs on it, cause its scary! someone who is typically the shooter so close to my location during a queer event. I was scared to put on a dress. I wore my very subtle rainbow pride shirt, but no trans flag, cause I was scared that if something were to happen it would just be a target to shoot at. but I had fashioned my very first t shot bottle into an earing. it felt personal. I wore the boots that I've only ever worn around my very best friends twice.
I walked in nearly half an hour late, and on the way to the building I pass two people, holding Easter buckets with religious church cards about an event the church is doing, as well as some Easter themed candy. I could tell those people were there to be against the event, but I smiled and took the card and a candy anyway.
I go into the drag event and its just tables set up along the wall leaving space in the middle for would be performers, catering against the wall with the people I work with, and a place near the entrance to get pictures. The gsa president is giving a long winded disjointed speech, but you could feel how scared he was. wither it be general anxiety of being on stage in drag or the stress of possible agitators. but he spoke. and he wore the dress. and I didn’t.
At some point someone walked up to me and asked if they knew me. we were in theater together, although and they just weren’t 100% able to recognize me after being on T for a while. The food was spaghetti with meatballs and pasta sauce, with the spaghetti noodles being neon rainbow colored pasta. I remember hearing the cook be so proud in the most adorably cishet ally way about it. the positive people to negative was ten to one. I felt seen for the first time in a long time. The cis girls in the gsa who were all dolled up sung karaoke songs, all of them a little younger then me. one getting stage fright while singing butch for butch, a song I know by heart, we all cheered her on and supported her. it all eventually devolved into them singing musical numbers so after a while I went home. it was boring in the most small town queer club way and I don’t think I could have asked for more.
Things are scary right now, but we as trans people have so much support from all over. What you see online is not representative of the whole of reality and you will hyper focus on the negatives but that’s not 100% real. We must be as active in our communities as we can because we are so much stronger together!

i was looking for a website that would make a simpsons chalkboard gag for me so i wouldn't have to open photoshop (or comparable free application) and instead i found a list of chalkboard gags from the show
only they were formatted in such a way that they looked like a poem
thus i present to you a found poem i call Standards:
I will not carve gods. I will not spank others. I will not aim for the head. I will not barf unless I'm sick. I will not expose the ignorance of the faculty.
I saw nothing unusual in the teacher's lounge. I will not conduct my own fire drills. Funny noises are not funny. I will not snap bras. I will not fake seizures.
This punishment is not boring and pointless. My name is not Dr. Death. I will not defame New Orleans. I will not prescribe medication. I will not bury the new kid.
I will not teach others to fly. I will not bring sheep to class. A burp is not an answer. Teacher is not a leper. Coffee is not for kids.
I will not eat things for money. I will not yell "She's Dead" at roll call. The principal's toupee is not a Frisbee. I will not call the principal "spud head". Goldfish don't bounce.
Mud is not one of the 4 food groups. No one is interested in my underpants. I will not sell miracle cures. I will return the seeing-eye dog. I do not have diplomatic immunity.
I will not charge admission to the bathroom. I will never win an Emmy. The cafeteria deep fryer is not a toy. All work and no play makes Bart a dull boy. I will not say "Springfield" just to get applause.
I am not authorized to fire substitute teachers. My homework was not stolen by a one-armed man. I will not go near the kindergarten turtle. I am not deliciously saucy. Organ transplants are best left to professionals.
The Pledge of Allegiance does not end with "Hail Satan". I will not celebrate meaningless milestones. There are plenty of businesses like show business. I will not re-transmit without the express permission of Major League Baseball. Five days is not too long to wait for a gun.
I will not waste chalk. I will not skateboard in the halls. I will not instigate revolution. I will not draw naked ladies in class. I did not see Elvis.
I will not call my teacher "Hot Cakes". Garlic gum is not funny. They are laughing at me, not with me. I will not yell "Fire" in a crowded classroom. I will not encourage others to fly.
I will not fake my way through life. Tar is not a plaything. I will not Xerox my butt. It's potato, not potatoe. I will not trade pants with others.
I am not a 32 year old woman. I will not do that thing with my tongue. I will not drive the principal's car. I will not pledge allegiance to Bart. I will not sell school property.
I will not burp in class. I will not cut corners. I will not get very far with this attitude. I will not belch the National Anthem. I will not sell land in Florida.
I will not grease the monkey bars. I will not hide behind the Fifth Amendment. I will not do anything bad ever again. I will not show off. I will not sleep through my education.
I am not a dentist. Spitwads are not free speech. Nobody likes sunburn slappers. High explosives and school don't mix. I will not bribe Principal Skinner.
I will not squeak chalk. I will finish what I sta "Bart Bucks" are not legal tender. Underwear should be worn on the inside. The Christmas Pageant does not stink.
I will not torment the emotionally frail.

I’m an art student, animation second year. We just finished projects about AI and we’ve had many meaningful and insightful conversations, lectures and even debates on the subject. I have a lot to say so forgive the long text.
The TLDR is that AI in itself is not unethical. It’s the background it comes from (as mentioned), mainly what data sets it uses. It’s not wrong to make or use an AI, so the debate shouldn’t focus around the question of whether or not AI should exist, which is something I’ve seen a lot.
The longer story is that the world of AI is… complex. Shocker, I know. And I often see people debate the wrong subjects as well.
The way you use AI matters - learning how to formulate your prompts is an art in itself, and some very talented people create incredible artwork with prompts that run hundreds of words long, and take week if not months of iterations. The human factor is still there, and a redditor typing in ‘Superman’ into mid journey isn’t the same as someone using an essay to generate a complex and detailed image, and doing that over and over until they have the result they wanted. So it isn’t a question of being lazy or uninspired or unoriginal.
AI art is also not only visual. As animation majors we obviously spoke about the possibility for the Everyman to use AI to make their own show without the monopoly Disney has on the market, speaking about possibilities for inclusivity and representation the likes you’ve never seen before, but we also mentioned royalty free and personalized music you can use in your YouTube videos, or generated inhuman movement that can be utilized in horror, or how inbetweening can be a thing of the past with a good AI. The one big thing I took from these classes is that AI art has the potential to shatter the well guarded gates of the beginner-unfriendly art world and open up new media for people without experience, just as photoshop allowed many inexperienced users to draw or edit pictures in a near professional manner, or how iPhones let you take very good photographs without an additional load of expensive equipment.
The big issue that everyone seems to not be fully understanding is where the data comes from. If you download someone’s art without their consent and feed it to AI, that’s infringing on their intellectual property. If you feed the entire discography of Michael Jackson to an AI to generate a new song of his, that’s also a question of ethics surrounding a deceased artist, but it won’t harm his income obviously. A smaller artist with no legal team has no way of defending themself when their work gets stolen. If the AI gets their art as data, their style is now replicable with a simple click, negating the need for payment for commissions and thus denying them their rent, bills, groceries.
Of course the question of ‘what if the wrong people use it for the wrong reasons?’ has to have come up here for the reasons mentioned above. And that is a concern that’s been present since… well, forever. Stealing work is a cultural issue, not an AI issue. Movies or games or paintings or songs that are derivative of one another, stealing each others concepts and design choices, are a thing that has been happening for years. And we can all unanimously agree that stealing someone’s idea is wrong. When you see on Spotify that has a beat from someone else’s song you get mad if the original has less clicks.
But being inspired isn’t wrong itself; and neither is decoupage, which is what AI art, especially visual, truly is. You wouldn’t be mad at BBC for making a Sherlock Holmes show because it’s ‘too close to the source material’ (it’s just an example. Don’t come at me tumblr) and the source character is in the public domain anyway. Nobody is being harmed by the network’s choice of inspiration. You also wouldn’t scream at a stay at home mom that’s journaling for fun, and you wouldn’t argue that her cutting out pieces of magazine pictures are her stealing the work of the magazine’s editors, photographers, writers. She isn’t profiting from that work, and she’s also not taking the money away from the magazine.
The approach of the non-art public to how artists use reference is also skewed, but that’s a whole new conversation for another day.
With both of those ideas in mind (the data sets can consist of material that wasn’t taken consensually thus harming the artist, and AI art itself isn’t necessarily lazy or bad) I feel like the debate on AI art should in general shift to legality. Most other art forms like drawing or movies or dancing or music have rather obvious, but still often blurry, lines that shouldn’t be crossed, and more importantly, court cases that you can reference. You’ve had musicians suing each other over stolen songs before and you have an idea of what would be considered stealing here. AI needs to be debated with the question of ‘what data set did this program use and was the idea for the work original enough by this and other industries’ standards’. This entire section of the art world doesn’t have that quite yet, but we’re getting there, with recent developments in the suings of multiple AI’s.
This is not a settled matter, and I don’t think we should be treating it as such, nor as if it’s the end of the world. To be entirely clear, just two months ago I thought AI was the devil also. It was these classes and word from people that are considered professionals in multiple mediums and art circles that changed my mind and opened me to the actual problems of the situation. My lesson was that I jumped to conclusions too fast. I now like to equate this problem to (even though I’m aware it’s not the same) the birth of photography, or photoshop or blender/3D. Painters were worried photographs would put them out of jobs, and sometimes that was true, but that just means the painters could use photographs for their own work as well, capturing more detailed reference, or choose to deviate their art from photography with style choices not present in the realism of photos. When 3D started being introduced people were scared animators would lose jobs, because why would you hire a team of people for a complex shot when you can render it out with one person putting key frames in instead? Well because knowing how to use that program is fucking hard, and there is a charm to the style of a 2D animated rotating camera instead of a 3D shape.
Think of how you can use AI ethically and without stealing someone’s food money, while still doing your thing and committing to your style. Sometimes it won’t be possible, because there is no AI that would be usable for your purposes, because the data set is always limited and focused on a specific purpose. Sometimes the idea that you have is just not possible to generate. That proves that AI won’t ruin the world, because it can’t do anything without human input, and it can’t make what it doesn’t know. It’s not a scary boogeyman and we should all remember that.
watching the AI art debate thing on twitter is a special kind of torture if you’ve ever attempted any irl political action in your entire life because it’s a train wreck of people trying to enact a movement against something and methodically picking every worst possible argument you could hope to make, constantly shifting the battleground from concrete territory you can actually Win into highly subjective areas that nobody in the conversation can ever decisively win
“all AI art is ugly” is a pointless cul de sac you have to re-argue whenever anyone makes even a half-decent picture, “any commercial art AI should have to demonstrate that it’s only working from public domain artworks” is material, practical and doable. “all AI artists have no passion” is a great way to give those people an avenue to argue you’re just being cruel and bitter (or for AI artists who also use traditional mediums to flat-out refute), “any art produced commercially by an AI should have its prompts recorded so we know they didn’t invoke another artist/their IP to make it” is a thing you can make laws and regulations about. “AI art is soulless fake art unlike Real art from Real artists” gives your opponents the easy opportunity to paint you as a backwards out of touch academic snob disconnected from everyday people (and uh, as an academic snob myself, good luck decisively solving the “what is real art??” debate for the first time in human history), “an AI can’t have any kind of conversation with the commissioner to understand their vision, it can’t truly understand what its making so feedback and precision won’t be on par with a real human, so if you want something accurate and personal it could be an inferior service for your money” is a tangible concern that anyone looking to buy art should be aware of, whether or not an AI can make a pretty picture is less important in practical terms than whether it can make the exact picture the person buying wants
you can spend all day arguing that as a human artist you have Soul and that your work has Life, or you can argue that as a human artist if the client wants their fursona’s right arm a little more to the left or for their expression to have more sassiness in it then you can just do that for them instead of arguing with a robot over what an arm is or the complexities of anthro marmoset facial features
#essay moment#ai art is complicated and I have feelings about it#I still hate ai art bc data sets stealing waah#and often the style just isn’t my thing#but that’s my choice#I don’t want romcoms because I don’t like the style it doesn’t make the genre evil#I understand I kinda strayed from the point of the original post but this is a complex issue I think so. ya
