from Photoplay Magazine, October 1916
Margery Ordway photographed by Dick Stagg
original caption:
THIS IS THE NEW FALL STYLE IN CAMERA "MEN"
Meaning, the style you could fall for. Nor is this a masquerade get-up. Margery Ordway, regular, professional, licensed, union crank-turner at Camp Morosco, has gone into camera work as nonchalantly as other girls take up stenography, nursing, husband-stalking.

Extra! Special! Stop the press! Scoop! The first picture in history showing Buster "Frosty-Face" Keaton wearing a broad grin. A daring cameraman caught him off guard while he was holidaying in the south of France.

London After Midnight (1927)
1929 French photoplay novelization of the lost Lon Chaney film.
This one's supposed to be the most accurate and literary version of the film, made by someone who actually saw the movie. English edition by Thomas Mann exist for those who (unlike me) have some extra money in here.

Clara Bow, Christmas 1926
First image from Photoplay Magazine, January 1927.
Caption reads:
“New Pictures
THE night before Christmas and not a stocking in the house. Here Clara Bow has climbed on the roof to wait for Santa Claus only to find that she has nothing to hang on the chimney. Pity the poor flapper on Christmas Eve!”

Today is my favorite actress's birthday. Clara Bow was born on July 29, 1905. She became one of the biggest stars of the silent era and is just a joy to watch. To celebrate her birthday I wanted to show off one of my movie magazines with Clara on the cover.
Photoplay was one of the most popular movie mags and in 1929 they did a series of four magazines covers showing color charts for different hair colors. I have been able to track down three of them (these are original copies). Clara was on the cover for April with her beautiful red hair.

Marion Davies was used for March with blonde hair.

June Collyer was used in May for the brunettes.

Also as a fun bit of trivia, each of these actresses were in films with my favorite actor Gary Cooper 🥰.

from Photoplay, January 1931
original caption:
HERE'S a strangely fascinating picture of Lupe Velez, that complex exotic star. What story is more exciting than the narrative of Lupe's tempestuous loves and hates? What could have been more unexpected than her adoption of her sister's child? In "The Half Naked Truth," recently completed, she gives a new kind of characterization

Society note: Mr. Buster Keaton gave a small afternoon tea at the Hotel Ambassador in Los Angeles recently in honor of Miss Brown Eyes, the cow who has a leading part in his new picture, "Go West." Delightful refreshments consisting of hay, dog biscuits and crackers were served. Among those present were Peter the Great and Cameo, two dog stars: Jimmy, a monkey actor, and Polly.
