Wolfgang Tillmans 

Since the early 1990s, Wolfgang Tillmans has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium. Challenging the indexical nature traditionally associated with photography, his abstract and representational photographic bodies of work each in their own way put forward the notion of the photograph as object—rather than as a record of reality.

Tillmans manipulates light as though it were painterly pigment; the result is a photographic form of abstraction that possesses something of the close palpability of bodily presence. Although divorced from the camera, these photographic images nonetheless operate within the intersection between analogue and digital processes. Art historically, this elusive painterly quality is reminiscent of the powerful colour depictions of the Abstract Expressionists. 

By exposing photographic paper in the darkroom to light and chemicals, chance plays a vital role the creation of these works. As Tillmans has explained: “what connects all my work is finding the right balance between intention and chance, doing as much as I can and knowing when to let go, allowing fluidity and avoiding anything being forced”. Ultimately Tillmans does not seek to depict reality, rather, he interprets and recreates it, working with light to create an alternative actuality, a way of creating photographic images free from pedagogy and preconception.

 In 2000, Tillmans was the first photographer to receive the prestigious Turner Prize.

Photographic artists are reconsidering the potential of a photograph with a shift to making rather than taking photographs. By using vintage and contemporary photographs as a starting point, artists create physically layered works of art that result in an object, often in reaction to the flood of ubiquitous imagery that digital and cell phone photography has afforded.

Praxis Gallery presents photographic art or lens-based artwork that utilizes physical interventions and investigations of photographic surfaces that can include sewing, cutting, drawing, painting, tearing, bending, and weaving, all ways of interrogating the material qualities of a physical photograph to create new realities.

Dwelling in Hope

Studio Montclair is delighted to present its first exhibit devoted exclusively to photography, “Dwelling in Hope.” Dwelling In Hope through December 12, 2024 Leach Gallery 641 Bloomfield Avenue Montclair, NJ. Delving into a topic that is foremost in our minds today for a multitude of reasons, the show conveys images expressing the concept of finding hope within the familiar, everyday aspects of our lives. Works are comprised of images that, according to Juror Joel Morgovsky, “are meaningful…because they are ABOUT something, not just pictures OF something…Some artists used patriotic references, while others found spiritual resonances. Many depicted the hope they found in relationships, while others illustrated optimism that supports recovery, resilience, and perseverance.” Several artists also depicted the natural world including horticulture, clearly symbolizing anticipation for future seasons. Images depict a variety of venues ranging from individual homes to the larger community, encompass single individuals, interpersonal events, or natural surroundings, and portray symbols of refuge and possibility along with esoteric imagery that conveys the theme of hope. The Michael Hoppen Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of works by Albarrán Cabrera, having recently announced that we will now be representing these artists in the UK. Photographers Anna Cabrera (b. 1969, Sevilla) and Angel Albarrán (b. 1969, Barcelona) formed their creative partnership in 1996. This fruitful and enduring collaboration is founded on a shared fascination with photographic printmaking, and the diverse range of processes and materials which this subject encompasses. Like the early pioneers of photography, for whom innovating the means of production for each print was not a choice but a prerequisite, Albarrán Cabrera see each work as an opportunity to explore new materials, chemicals, and print techniques. Over the last two decades, their practise has grown to incorporate methods as varied as platinum, palladium, cyanotype and gelatin silver printing, as well toning with selenium, sepia and tea. The works in our display have been created using their proprietary technique, in which pigment prints are created on hand-made gampi paper and embellished with gold leaf to echo the luminosity and lustre of traditional Japanese silk painting. Each work carries a subtly unique patina, which heightens their interest and individual appeal in a world where digital printing has become so ubiquitous. By appointment either via email or phone.
