I'm really loving your #tbt posts lately (which I assume might come from your queue). Thanks for keeping the historical interest flowing. One question: I'd love to know who the family is in the Minnesota photos. I assume you wrote about them in the past, if you have a personal source for the pictures. (My grandfather and his family were from Minnesota, and I recently viewed some photos of them.)
I wish I knew! Unfortunately this is one of several "white whale" albums I've purchased over the years with absolutely no written identification in them, and one of only two I haven't had any luck tracking down any individual people in the photos.
My current best guess is that the album is of a young adults group from the English Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in St. Paul, and was taken in the summer/fall of 1897 or 1898. There is one photo of a group in front of a church with a partial sign visible behind them which I was able to match to that church. I did some additional research and found that the church group did regular summer outings to many tourist spots and lakes in the St. Paul area.
I was able to additionally pinpoint the location to the St. Paul area due to the waterslide in the background of this image and a visible sign for the Nevers Dam (on the MN/WI border) in another.
I compiled a list of a dozen or so people who attended the church at the time (from newspaper mentions of various events at the church) but so far haven't had any luck matching any of those people to the individuals in the album.
It's a great album, about 40 or so pictures in total and I believe it was likely developed at home by an amateur photographer. None of the photos are mounted, being printed on very thin paper, and several have hand applied mats added to the exposures to change the shape - as seen above.
Snapshots from the 1890s are my absolute favorite photographs as personal photography was still in its infancy, and people were still figuring out what exactly to do with the cameras the now had access to. Many of the images are still posed like studio portraits, but you can see the very beginnings of people starting to get creative with what they chose to capture.
#it's also worth noting that most of the really interesting early snapshots I've come across were taken by teenagers and young adults#I think young people were much more willing to take chances and experiment with new technology#I used to give a lecture about the development of personal photography#and I had a whole section about teenage girls not get nearly enough credit for shaping the way we still take pictures to this day#photography#history of photography#1890s#minnesota#victorian#history#asks

Researching Online: A Guide
Below are worked examples of how to do an essay or research project using only online resources.
Don’t spend ages looking for one article or book unless it is really essential and even then, you may not be able to get it, but you will find something related.
Vary your search terms, e.g. for the examples below: early modern, renaissance, reformation, sixteenth century might all be relevant.
Follow links in articles and on collections – often, footnotes in journals online may be hyperlinked to the item (especially in more recent publications), you can see similar items, or who has cited that work. For primary sources/collections, catalogues may suggest similar items too.
There will be dead ends and frustrations but persevere – there is lots of material out there.
Save things using a citation programme like Zotero or Mendeley
If you find something interesting and potentially useful for another topic, bank it for later
Be creative and use sources you might not have thought about before, for example the sound archive in the British Library and think across period and geography.
Google Scholar and on JSTOR/other platforms, Project Muse which is another very good platform with loads of open access material.
USTC: the USTC is a database of early modern printed books across Europe

Reframing the American Dream: Justine Kurland’s Photographic Journey
Justine Kurland's career as a photographer has been shaped by her fascination with the American landscape and the communities that live on its fringes. Her work has consistently challenged traditional narratives and offered alternative perspectives on the country's cultural identity. Two key aspects of her work are her reinterpretation of the American landscape and her exploration of the intersection between freedom and everyday reality.
Kurland's reinterpretation of the American landscape is a central aspect of her work. Her early photographs, taken during road trips across the country, contradicted the masculinist mythology of the American West and instead offered a radical female imaginary. This approach not only challenged the dominant male gaze, but also created a new narrative that was more inclusive and representative of women's experiences. In this way, Kurland's work has helped reframe the way we think about the American landscape and the people who inhabit it.
In her more recent work, Kurland has continued to explore the intersection between freedom and everyday reality. One series examines the relationship between the freedom of the open road and the mundane reality of car culture. By highlighting the tension between the romanticized ideal of the open road and the practical reality of maintenance and repair, Kurland's work invites critical reflection on how freedom is experienced and the role of cars in American life.
Kurland's work has been widely recognized and celebrated, with exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad. Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of institutions as a testament to the impact and influence of her work and the significance of her contributions to the field of photography.

Ouiiii Merci Ninie !
