National Portrait Gallery // Martin Parr
This photograph from Martin’s “Everybody Dance Now” series absolutely captivates me. I love the concept behind his idea. I love how freely he captured these women expressing themselves through dance. His exhibition was brilliant.

These are photographs by Edward Weston and I found these images to be very interesting because of the unique perspective on things that people see every day. I love the way that the leading lines draw your eyes to all parts of the photograph. For these pictures they’re more of a spiral line so your eyes go from the outside of the photograph and brings you in to the center.

Layla posed by Layla and Layla posed by Tiana.
Three facts about Layla:
Learning Chinese
Experienced in Tae Kwan Do
Has been to a Tyler the Creator concert
The purpose of this assignment was to capture two portraits of our partner. For the first portrait Layla posed herself. I chose to have the picture show only Layla and the door behind her in order to ensure that Layla would be the focal point. Landscape seemed to be the best layout for the photo in order to get all the bars in the photo. Additionally, I chose to take the straight on. This, along with focusing on Layla looking away from the photo, gave an egocentric feel to the image.
For the second picture I told Layla how to pose. After talking with Layla for a while, I could tell that she had a fun and bubbly personality. Therefore, I wanted to give her a fun pose that focused on her smile and showed her personality. For this photo I chose to take the picture from directly above Layla in order to only get her face in the photo.
My experience with my first photography assignment was overwhelming. I found it difficult to find locations and poses for my partner. I also had issues with framing and getting my subject to be in the center. Overall, the assignment was interesting to do and I was able to gain more experience working with my camera.

Pilot Phase Photographs
I decided to focus on the peacefulness of the iconic London underground during off-peak times for my pilot phase. Through this I also came to appreciate the architecture and designs throughout these stations, which is difficult for the regular commuter to appreciate at peak times. I edited these photos in black and white to showcase these textural aspects of different stations.
I found a lot of symmetry inside the tube stations in particular the stairs and escalators. I particularly like the arches for the ceilings that you can see above the stairs and decided to photograph this further at St Pancras in Image 4.
Whilst 5 of my photographs are inside the tube stations, I also photographed on the Hammersmith Tube Line. I decided to include this image in my pilot phase because the tube itself is important to my focus point, the tube stations. It also highlights to the viewer the emptiness of the tube carriage, something that someone would not normally see on their daily commute.
For my final phase I would like to contrast between peak and off-peak times at different stations. I would like to experiment with long exposures during the peak times to emphasis the busyness and to ensure the design aspect is still a strong focus of the image.

Photo-a-day challenge. 2021 Edition #091
I was away doing fun stuff again today. I met a friend that I couldn’t meet in person before. We met through a course I attended in december and we became good friends. We finally managed to meet today and went location scouting in London. It was so so so much fun.
When I got home, I made helva with my mum’s help through video call, then washed up, then cooked dinner.
It was a while before I managed to sit down to relax and then find time to transfer the photos. I just finished selecting and sending them to my friend. I’m absolutely exhausted. I’m off to bed now.

FINAL PHASE PROJECT
Project Title: Unsophisticated
Concept: Children always hold the most innocent and pure expressions on their face. As we are getting older, we may find hard to enjoy the way we wish to have every day. We study, we work, we love, we hate, we smile, we cry. Eventually, we encounter difficulties, pressure, breakdowns, hardships, failures... I would like to preserve the innocence and true emotions in these photos, and remind us of the lovely times we had when we were young. Childhood is always a precious album, that stores the simple, carefree and unsophisticated moments in our life.
Technique: Children also have their temper and emotions. I arranged the photos from the transformation of expressions on their face. Firstly, it is a serious-looking boy, who is possibly the youngest among the children in these photos. His facial features were so distinct and detailed when he frowned. The boy in green and white tshirt was confused because he couldn’t find his way back from the rope course. The last three photos show the happy moments and how enthusiastic the children are to play in the park or paddle by the pool. Sunlight is always the best source of lighting that stands out the silhouette of the children. To emphasize the facial expressions, I slightly cropped the images for better representation.

Ellie Buck, major in advertising, goes to University of Colorado and loves travelling.
The view on the roof of library was beautiful in the sunshine. In the first picture directed by Ellie, she was trying to find a background close to the red she’s wearing, but there was no red so we just used a little green as opposite. The second picture was directed by me at the front of a window which reflects the scene on my back. I am surprised to find that Ellie looks like having different personalities in separate pictures mostly because of the use of light and color in the background and her facial expressions. The smiling one looks confident and warm:) and the unsmiling one more calm and cool :I

Photobook // “What Does London Mean to You?”
I also envisioned this project in a printed photobook, to have a tangible copy of it. These are templates I created in photoshop to show what 2 pages of the photobook might look like.

Abstract Photography:
Some of the earliest photographs that were defined as “abstract” were created in the late 19th century. This shows how photographers can capture an image of a noticeable, real world object and turn it into something that appears abstract and unlike anything you would see in real life with your own eyes.

Pilot Project (part 3):
Texture is not something I originally thought about photographing but after looking at these images I thought it would be interesting to consider. For these two photographs I focused on contrast in order to bring out the texture more.

I have been experimenting with contrast, having dark blacks against a white background or vice versa. I think this allows for the focus to be on the lines and architecture of the subject. Having minimal to no background lets the detailing of the lines become the main focus without getting distracting with whatever is in the background.

I love how Vivian’s street photography captures so much emotion in each of her photographs. I want my photography to show powerful emotion as well.
