The origins of Lucifer (1/2)
Lucifer should first be understood as a reference to Venus. The "star" that appears after sunset and just before sunrise was called by Isaiah (14:12) hêlēl ben šaḥar, or "the shining one, son of dawn".
That was translated to Greek as ὁ ἑωσφόρος ὁ πρωὶ ἀνατέλλων, or "Heosphoros, raiser of morning". Heosphoros, in turn, means "bringer of morning", much like the common Greek name for Venus, Phosphoros, meant "bringer of light".
Lucifer is a direct translation of Heosphoros, or more precisely of Phosphoros: indeed, the Latin name translates to "bringer of light", rather than "bringer of morning".
It is notable that the Hebrew text speaks of a son of dawn and the Greek and Latin texts reference a bringer of dawn or light. (There were, of course, other ways of calling Venus among the Greco-Romans, notably reflecting the evening aspect of the planet: Catullus called it Noctifer.) At any rate, the astronomical reference was quite clear before Lucifer began being associated with the Devil.

EXPOSITION à Berlin en octobre
✷ Occulture Conference ✷

hey uhhh I suspect Apollon is trying to reach out to me, ive never worked with deities before so I have no clue what I’m doing 😭 can you help me figure out if my suspicions are true and if so what to do about it? /nf
@the-cat-demon
@the-cat-demon
Apollo is reaching out. When I asked, he immediately went to yes with his pendulum. My suggestion is start small: send a small prayer, do a divination act, or find a pendulum to communicate with him.
Additionally to this, I asked if any other deities or entities are reaching out. Asmoten is also reaching out to you. I have the same suggestion for working with him as well.
Welcome

[ULTRANGELTOBER 2023] Day 24 - Twin
This was literally an excuse to get this lovely birthday present for @a-thenais onto my profiles. I'm surprised I didn't do it last year, since the prompt is for last year's Ultrangeltober.
It features both of our Lucifers, or 'the twins', as we call them for being so similar. This is non-canonical to either of our stories, although their designs are canonical to how they are in each of their heavens. It includes my Lucifer's pet peacock named Phosphoros, and her Lucifer's unnamed cobra friend.

Hymns to Hecate
Orphic Hymn to Hecate
Hekate Enodia, Trivia, lovely dame, Of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, Pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Daughter of Perses, solitary goddess, hail! The world’s key-bearer, never doomed to fail; In stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, And drawn by bulls, unconquerable, monstrous queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, Hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, And to the herdsman with a favoring mind draw near.
Hecate’s Hymn to Herself
I come, a virgin of varied forms, wandering through the heavens, bull-faced, three-headed, ruthless, with golden arrows; chaste Phoebe bringing light to mortals, Eileithyia; bearing the three synthemata [sacred signs] of a triple nature. In the Aether I appear in fiery forms and in the air I sit in a silver chariot, Earth reins in my black brood of puppies.
(From Porphyry’s lost commentary on the Chaldean Oracles, preserved by Eusebius of Caesaria in Praeparatio Evangelica. According to Porphyry, this hymn was composed by Hecate herself.)
Magical Invocation to Hecate
Approach, you of the netherworld, of earth, of heaven, Bombo! You by the wayside, at the crossroads, light-bearer, night-wanderer, Enemy of light, friend and companion of night, Rejoicing in the howl of dogs and in crimson gore, Lurking among the corpses and the tombs of lifeless dust, Lusting for blood, bringing terror to mortals, Grim one, Ogress [Mormo], Moon – you of many forms, May you come gracious to our sacrificial rites!
(Preserved in Refutation to All Heresies by Hippolytus)
Invocation to Hecate from PGM IV 2708-84
Come, giant Hecate, Dione’s guard, O Persia [daughter of Perses], Baubo Phroune, dart-shooter, Unconquered Lydian, the one untamed, Sired nobly, torch-bearing, guide, who bends down Proud necks, Kore, hear, you who’ve parted / gates Of steel unbreakable. O Artemis, Who, too, were once protectress, mighty one, Mistress, who burst forth from the earth, dog-leader, All-tamer, crossroad goddess, triple-headed, Bringer of light, august / virgin, I call you Fawn-slayer, crafty, O infernal one, And many-formed. Come, Hekate, goddess Of three ways, who with your fire-breathing phantoms Have been allotted dreaded roads and harsh / Enchantments, Hekate I call you
[…]
O Hekate of many names, O Virgin, Kore, Goddess, come, I ask, O guard and shelter of the threshing floor Persephone, O triple-headed goddess, Who walk on fire, cow-eyed BOUORPHORBE PANPHORBA PHORBARA AKITOPHI ERESHKIGAL / NEBOUTOSOUALETH Beside the doors, PYPYLEDEDEZO And gate-breaker; Come Hekate, of firey Counsel, I call you to my sacred chants.

Roman Marble Statue Found in Bulgaria
Archaeologists uncovered a fully preserved statue from the ancient city of Odessos. Archaeologists from Regional History Museum in Varna (Bulgaria's biggest maritime city) reported this afternoon, October 15, about this exceptional find during the excavations of the ancient city - a marble sculpture from the Roman era, slightly taller than a human height.
It depicts a middle-aged man with a short beard, dressed in a toga, with a scroll in his hand. On the front of the pedestal there is a well-preserved inscription, and from a preliminary reading it is clear the name of the person depicted: G(ai) Marius Hermogenes.
The only part that is missing is the wrist and there is some minor damage to the face, so restoration is needed before it can go on display, Archaeologia Bulgarica said on its Facebook page.
The statue was discovered during construction work in an area of sandy deposits, outside the walls of the ancient city. It was promptly reported to the museum by construction contractor Georgi Kraychev. The sculpture is believed to be from the end of the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd century.
The present-day city of Varna, Northeastern Bulgaria, originated as a settlement named Odessos (Ὀδησσός) which was founded by Ionian colonists from Miletus around 600–550 BC. The Greeks established their colony on the site of an earlier Thracian settlement.
In 335 BC, Alexander the Great conquered almost the entirety of ancient Thrace, and Odessos became part of the Macedonian Kingdom.
Odessos flourished most significantlly during the Hellenistic Age (end of III – I BC), when the city served as a starting point of troops of the successor of Alexander the Great – king Lysimachus (323–280 BC) who proclaimed himself king of Thrace. Big public buildings like temples, theatre, gymnasium (school for boys) and others were built during this period. Due to the increase of Thracian population in the city, a temple of the Thracian god-rider Heros Carabazmos and a temple of Artemis Phosphoros were built in II – I BC.
In 15 AD, Odessos became part of the Roman Empire, in the province of Moesia (later Lower Moesia), and became its main port on the Black Sea (Pontus Euxinos). Huge and ornate warm baths (Roman baths), the fourth largest in Europe, were built 7000 square meters of land.
It was called Varna by the Ancient Bulgars after the First Bulgarian Empire conquered it in the late 7th century AD.
