Lack of Darkness

From my Black Black Gold series. Choosing to live in light seems logical but is not the same as living without darkness. Confronting the creeping darkness takes courage but no war on it is needed, only keeping it at bay, making it want to join, wanting to recede, to allow the light. We were made from light after all, and we are not helpless against the dark.

MULTIVERSE: a Kingdom of Ends, Kant

Is there another universe exist besides of our own? Hell yeah! Kant’s universe is one of the most exquisite and counter-intuitive world in philosophy.

Immanuel Kant (1724 - 1804) uses his categorical imperative to define moral duties people shall follow. It is not enough for one to do good things just because it feels good; a truly moral person shall fulfil moral duties by creating universal principles based on reasons. These reasons will only lead to absolute good, and no evil can survive in the condition of these reasons. 

The principles are imperative. In his book Groundwork of the metaphysics of morals, it reads, “…common human reason in is practical judging is actually in perfect agreement with this, and always has the envisaged principles before its eyes.” (4:402) Everyone has to act on the principles as all others in the same situation would do the same. For example, a jazz musician was considering to give up his instrument. But when he thought about how if every musician gives up their instruments, he would recall the great musicians in the history: how if Jimi Hendrix gave up his guitar when he started off? It would be contrary to the universal principles where musicians is dutiful to give their best to the world in producing good music. Therefore, he should try his best to achieve the potential on his chosen instrument. 

Within his moral framework, reasons were equivalent to Jesus in Christianity, who took off the original sins from humans and brought salvation to humanity. Kant imagined a world where everyone obeyed the principles alike the Golden Rules. Everyone served each other as the end, not merely as means. He called this world “A Kingdom of Ends” that I transformed into a drawing. 

My drawing: a world without a lie

The drawing below is my imagination of the world Kant described. In the Kingdom of Ends, no one can lie. As the picture below, the semi-transparent people see each other as who they are. The semi-transparent people work collaborative, but they are on their own because they have freedom to choose their own end. Likely they were in Wars hundreds of years ago, slaughtering each other and lived in blood and terror. No one could trust the others until their saviours came, the fishes floating on top of them. The fishes represent the principles. (4:402)

Everyone goes through their own path, pursues their own ends, and at the same time considers the needs and desires in other people. Once a blood-thirsty series killer now helps others achieve their goals, and once the loafer now abandons procrastination and produces the right amount for the society.

Do these semi-transparent people have any feelings? Yes, they do. Kant did say that the principles derived, cannot be separated from our sensations and our experience in life. Thus, they remember their past and they enjoy food and warm hugs. When they touch you, it is like a solid breeze — it is light, but you know that they are real. You might not feel belongs to them. But they are happy to trade utilitarian products with you. When you are around them, you know you can trust them.
