When playing for the Michigan Fantasy 5, always remember that you need to maintain a positive mental thinking process. Do not play when you are desperate to win. Avoid also has been negative thoughts about others and then for themselves. Energy and enthusiasm is like a magnet; so make sure you produce the positive energy and enthusiasm so that it may attract positive energy will only. K - Kansas Jayhawks. How how is it possible that comparable thing team can beat Florida and then lose to both Oral Roberts and DePaul with a two-week period? It seems like they are just setting themselves up with regards to the standard first round tournament loss.

10 takeaways from college basketball’s first full weekend of conference play
The conference grind portion of the 2019-20 college basketball season has arrived.
Conference play is here, which means the beautiful nine-week journey that carries us through the otherwise depressing as hell depth of winter has begun. Let’s talk about the 10 biggest things that happened during the first weekend of the grind.
1. Cassius Winston and Michigan State are “back”
In the middle of a season that has been largely defined by the disappointing performances of the teams that were supposed to be the best in the sport, Michigan State exists in its own category. The Spartans were a near-unanimous preseason No. 1 team that lost three of its first eight games and began the New Year without a single victory over a team in the current AP top 25 poll.
Tom Izzo’s team has now won seven straight, a run capped by Sunday’s 87-69 torching of arch-rival and 12th-ranked Michigan. That decisive win came just three days after Sparty put a 76-56 beatdown on an Illinois team with NCAA tournament aspirations.
At the heart of this turnaround (if you want to call it that) has been senior star Cassius Winston, who has now scored 21 or more points and dished out six or more assists in each of his last four games. He gave one of the best performances of his college career on Sunday, lighting up Michigan to the tune of 32 points and nine assists over 38 minutes of floor time.
While Winston and Michigan State were struggling in November and the first half of December, no other player really stepped up and established himself as the early front-runner to win national Player of the Year. Oregon’s Payton Pritchard, Dayton’s Obi Toppin and Duke’s Vernon Carey Jr. have all received their fair share of love, but it’s been more “if you had to pick someone today” love as opposed to “he’s clearly been the best player in the sport” love.
Despite everything that happened in the season’s first eight weeks, Michigan State still seems like a team that is going to be among the three or four trendiest national title picks come March. And now suddenly, it seems like every postseason national Player of the Year award may wind up going to the same guy who picked up each and every preseason honor.
2. The Big East will be the most competitive conference to follow all winter
The “best” conference debate is always a subjective one, but I don’t think there is going to be much pushback this winter against the notion that the Big East title race is going to be the most competitive in college basketball. Of the 10 teams in the conference, there isn’t one at the moment with a fan base that doesn’t have at least mild hope that their team will wind up hearing its name called on Selection Sunday.
No one doubts the legitimacy of teams like Butler, Villanova and Seton Hall, but it’s the bottom half of the league that sets it apart this season. The Big East team with the worst overall record, 9-6 Providence, suddenly has life after reeling off consecutive wins over Texas, Georgetown and DePaul. The three 0-2 teams at the bottom of the league standings — DePaul, Georgetown and St. John’s — all won 10 or more games during the non-conference portions of their season.
After just one week of league play, it’s already apparent how intense every night of Big East play is going to be for the next two months.

If every Big East Friday night winds up being like the first one, they’re going to be worth canceling plans for.
3. San Diego State is still undefeated and is absolutely for real
One of the most well-known active streaks of futility in college hoops is that no team from the Western United States has won the national championship since Arizona last cut down the nets back in 1997. The program most likely to end this drought has always been one of the top tier teams from the Pac-12 or, in recent years, Gonzaga. While the Bulldogs are the current No. 1 team in America and Pac-12 squads like Oregon and Arizona certainly seem capable of playing deep into March, there’s a new legitimate West Coast challenger in 2019-20.
San Diego State is 15-0 and one of just two unbeaten teams remaining in college basketball. The Aztecs have been at their best when the lights have been the brightest this season, smashing Creighton by 31, beating Iowa by 10, blasting Utah by 28, and most recently going on the road and handling preseason Mountain West favorite Utah State with relative ease.
So how did the Aztecs go from a team no one was talking about two months ago to one that now has people asking whether or not they can enter the NCAA tournament without a loss?
For starters, Washington State transfer Malachi Flynn has been one of the best guards in the country. The junior is averaging career-bests in points (15.9 ppg) and assists (5.1 apg), saved SDSU with a shot at the buzzer against San Jose State, and just lit up Utah State All-American candidate Sam Merrill to the tune of 22 points, five rebounds and four assists.
With Utah State going through a little bit of a 2018-19 Nevada funk, San Diego State has emerged as the Mountain West team most worthy of fear from the rest of the country. The Aztecs play the type of team defense — No. 12 in Ken Pomeroy’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings — that can carry a squad without an obvious draft pick to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. They’ve also built a solid first half of the year resume that includes five Quadrant 1 wins, which is currently tied for the most in the country. Oh, and the Aztecs are also No. 1 in the NET Rankings at the moment.
The basketball world scrambling to CBS Sports Net to see whether or not Brian Dutcher’s team can keep the dream of an undefeated season alive has the potential to be one of the more fun (and unforeseeable) storylines of the weeks to come.
4. Penn State appears to be (finally) tournament bound
Pat Chambers is the only power conference coach in America to have gone at least eight seasons at a school without a single trip to the NCAA tournament and to still be employed by said school.
It’s looking more and more like the ninth time is going to be the charm for Chambers at Penn State.
Playing a home game at The Palestra in Philly on Saturday, the Nittany Lions notched a significant early Big Ten victory with a thrilling 89-86 take down of No. 23 Iowa. Penn State also knocked off then-No. 4 Maryland last month, giving them two wins over ranked conference foes less than a week into the new year.
Lamar Stevens (16.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg) has been as good as expected for Penn State, but the difference between this year has been the elevated support the senior guard has received. Sophomore Myreon Jones has taken a massive step forward, St. Bonaventure transfer IZaiah Brockington is also averaging double figures, and senior forward Mike Watkins is nearly averaging a double-double and has clearly saved the best basketball for the end of his college career.
Unless something goes horribly awry over these next two months, it appears Penn State’s patience with Chambers is going to be (finally) be rewarded.
5. North Carolina does not
A disaster season for North Carolina found a new bottom on Saturday when the Tar Heels allowed Georgia Tech to come into the Dean Dome and roll to a 96-83 victory. Considering the fact that the Yellow Jackets led 27-4 at the under eight timeout of the first half, Carolina finding a way to score 83 points may have been the most impressive takeaway from the contest.
That note was small consolation to Roy Williams, who didn’t hold back in his postgame press conference.
“I want to apologize to all the North Carolina fans, the people that care about our basketball program, former players, everyone that cares about us,” Williams said. “We stunk it up tonight, and it’s got to me my responsibility. It’s the most negative I’ve ever felt about myself. The most negative I’ve ever felt about any team. We weren’t ready to play.
“If I had any idea what caused that I would have already changed it. It’s the most disappointed and most upset I’ve ever been in my life coaching a basketball game, and it’s not even close.”
Williams need just one victory to pass UNC icon Dean Smith on the career wins list, a monumental event in Chapel Hill that suddenly seems difficult to predict.
While rumors continue to swirl about Cole Anthony’s immediate future, it’s important to remember that the Tar Heels weren’t overly impressive when Anthony was fully healthy and engaged. Even if that soon to be millionaire chooses to come back and finish his one season of college hoops on the court, it may not be enough to keep UNC from missing out on the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010.
6. Pacific and Saint Mary’s played the best game nobody saw
The best game of the weekend took place well after most of the Eastern half of the United States had gone to bed.
Damon Stoudamire’s Pacific Tigers outlasted visiting Saint Mary’s in a quadruple overtime thriller that featured a massive second half comeback and a banked in three at the buzzer of overtime No. 2 that extended the game.
In what became the most amazing basketball game I have ever seen in person, the Pacific men recorded their biggest win in years vs St Mary’s 107-99 in 4 OT’s! Here is Gary Chivichyan at the buzzer bank a 3 to send it to Triple OT and the crowd into a frenzy. @PacificMensBB pic.twitter.com/F9NMycdt2k
— kurtriveratv (@kurtriveratv) January 5, 2020
“I don’t think I’ve played in a game like that before and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game like that before,” said Pacific’s Gary Chivichyan, who hit the memorable shot at the end of the second overtime. “That was probably one of the best basketball games I have ever witnessed in my life.”
While Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and BYU are once again the class of the West Coast Conference, the middle of the league has evolved to a point where games like this one (as well as Pepperdine pushing the Zags to the brink on the same night) are going to become more of the norm.
If the first two months of this season has taught us anything, it’s that West Coast action from the Pac-12, Mountain West and WCC is going to be worth losing sleep for this winter. Not, like, a ton of sleep, but definitely “oh man, I’m moving a little slower than I should be this morning but watching Herb Sendek coach basketball at 1 a.m. was awesome” sleep.
7. Speaking of that ...
As mentioned, Pepperdine pushed No. 1 Gonzaga to the brink late Saturday night. And even when the Zags got things under control, the Waves were able to respond with arguably the best dunk of the weekend.
I did not expect the best dunk of the day in CBB to come from a Pepperdine player, but here we are! pic.twitter.com/KOlrYz7Pft
— Kyle Boone (@Kyle__Boone) January 5, 2020
That’s senior forward Kameron Edwards punching one in right on the head of Corey Kispert. Edwards scored 14 points and snagged 10 boards in the 75-70 loss.
8. This should be the year Duke wins the ACC
One of the more staggering current college basketball facts is that Duke hasn’t even won a share of the ACC’s regular season title since all the way back in 2010. The Blue Devils have been the preseason favorites to win the conference seven times since then and now.
Despite the embarrassing loss to Stephen F. Austin still being relatively fresh in the collective mind of the basketball world, Duke looks a clear cut above the rest of the ACC as we shift into the heart of conference play. The Blue Devils have won their first three league games by a combined 86 points, and two of those contests have been away from Cameron Indoor. They shouldn’t face another significant challenge until Louisville — which looks like less of a threat in the league after it was manhandled at home by Florida State on Saturday — comes to Durham on the 18th.
9. If you’re going to take a bad loss, take it on Friday
The most significant conference upset of the weekend is one that hasn’t warranted a ton of discussion on this Monday. That’s because pretty much nobody was watching it. The lesson, of course, is that if you’re a Big Ten or Big East (or whatever) team looking to bury a woeful performance this winter, make sure it happens on one of those awkward Friday night games on the schedule.
On this most Friday night of the season, Ohio State allowed what had been a super average Wisconsin team to come into the The Schottenstein Center and walk out with a 61-57 upset of the No. 5 team in the country. Buckeye big man Kaleb Wesson was phenomenal (22 points and 13 rebounds), but when Wisconsin committed two or three defenders to shutting Wesson down, no one else for OSU was able to step up as a reliable second scoring option.
Suddenly, an Ohio State team that seemed as rock solid as any squad in the country just a few weeks ago has turned into something of an enigma. They’ll have a chance to answer some of these newly unearthed questions Tuesday night when they hit the road to take on Maryland.
10. The tales of Wichita State’s demise appear to have been greatly exaggerated
After an uncharacteristically subpar 2018-19, Wichita State appears to be back with a vengeance this season. The Shockers destroyed Ole Miss 74-54 on Saturday to improve to 13-1 on the year. Their lone loss is a 12-point defeat at the hands of West Virginia that looks much better now than it did at the time.
With Cincinnati struggling mightily in year one under John Brannen and Memphis losing at home to Georgia and still adjusting to the realization that James Wiseman isn’t coming back, the AAC really needed Wichita State to regain its footing this year. The Shockers are not only stabilized, but they appear to be the class of the conference at the moment.

BIOGRAPHY
Triggers: Death
There’s a violin playing around the corridor, music sounding from the fingertips of a teenage girl just looking for a bit more practice. On the fourth floor there’s a baby crying, having just awoken from it’s nap and desperate for nourishment. On the sixth floor there’s two young boys, screaming at their tv screen, as bullets fly in the final level of the video game they’ve been playing to put off their homework. And on the twelfth floor, there’s a marriage crumbling with each plate shattered on the cracked wood floors. All of these sounds, warped up into one chorus of chaos, constantly on loop. Any other tenant would be banging on the landlord’s door, ironically screaming complaints to him about all the noise. That is, any other tenant, except Nico Di Luca, who can’t hear it.
Growing up in Philly, Nico hadn’t come from a life of luxury or despair. It was a pretty average upbringing, Nico being the third and final child born into a family of five. His father was the owner of an restaurant down the street from their home, and his mother was a music teacher who held lessons out of their living room. Being that his father was Italian and his mother was Irish, he never really knew what it meant to go without family. Every Sunday was church, and then homework, and then family dinners that seemed to last forever. His cousins, brother, and sister were his best friends, and his aunts and uncles were practically just extra sets of parents. His father had been the first out of the Di Luca brothers to marry a non-Italian woman, which caused for Nico and his siblings to always stand out a bit more then the rest of the children. But it had never really mattered. Paler skin, and lighter hair, –– they were still of Di Luca blood.
Even so, at a very young age, Nico had found a bigger distinction between himself and the others than just his additional Irish decent. He had a gift. At 9 years old, during a game of street baseball, Nico had hit a home run, and as a reward kept running past the makeshift bases and into his house to grab an ice cold drink. But he’d found much more then that. Opening the fridge, he’d paused at the sound of a piano being played, and an woman singing, “E Più Ti Penso”. His mother’s music lessons were nothing new to hear in the house, but something about the song playing had struck a chord in him, and Nico had found himself trailing into the living room, almost in a trance, bottle of juice hanging limply in his hands. It wasn’t until he began humming along to the woman’s voice, that his mother and her student noticed his presence. Smiling, his mother had offered for him to join. Nico had hesitantly stepped forward, following along with careful eyes. The moment Nico opened his mouth to sing, his mother just knew. He had it.
From that point on, Nico spent less time outside playing, and instead found himself sitting alongside his mother at the piano. There was a fire lit inside him. Something that rushed through his veins whenever his hands touched an instrument, or his lips parted to sing. As he grew older, the passion just grew, and the older he got the more he could understand it. He was a musician. Soon there was nothing left for his mother to teach him, and at times, his mother almost felt as though the student had become the teacher. Her son’s newfound love for the art, reinstalling her own appreciation for it. Something she hadn’t felt in years. His family of course supported it, cheering him on whenever he’d perform for them. Whether that be as entertainment for his drunken elders after dinner, or at his dad’s restaurant. In school, Nico was involved in all the basic music courses offered; chorus, theory, band. It was hard for many to comprehend half the time that one of the De Luca boys did something other then sports. Some even mocked him for it, but his cousins and siblings didn’t let that go on for long.
Every day, he worked harder and harder at his craft in the hopes to one day get into music school. The years were grueling, each one closer to the one that would define it all. His senior year of high school was filled with nothing but music, tests, auditions, and many many prayers from his church, friends, and family. Everyone knew of Nico’s talent and his dreams. So, naturally, everyone also knew the day he got his acceptance letter into The DePaul School of Music in Chicago. For Nico, life was set. It was rare that a kid his age not only found a passion so young, but also knew what they wanted to do with it. And he refused to let that go to waste. Fall of the following year, he was moved into his dorm, and making the biggest change of his life, being separated from his family. It was hard to let go of the years of everyone he loved being right around the corner, but he and everyone else knew the opportunity was worth it. And it was. Up until the Spring Semester of Nico’s junior year. One morning he’d awakened with ringing in his ears. Never having experienced it before, he didn’t think much of it. As the day went on he began to grow more worried, as things were getting harder to hear. His ears felt almost clogged, voices sounding muffled, and the ringing growing more persistent. When he began snapping his fingers beside his ears only for them to sound like distant thuds, he panicked, expressing to his friends surrounding him that ‘something was wrong.’ And a couple of days later, when his parents flew in to go with him to the doctors, his worst fear was announced to him. “Idiopathic Progressive Hearing Loss.”
According to the doctors, over time, Nico’s ability to hear would worsen. Eventually resulting in total hearing loss in both ears, and therefore qualifying him to be considered legally Deaf. Nico’s world crashed and burned right then and there. The news sending him into one of the darkest periods of his life. He took the rest of the semester off of school, as suggested to begin preparing for what it all meant. But each day grew harder and harder for him to accept his cruel fate. The more people talked about hearing aids, and sign language courses, the angrier he got. This wasn’t meant to be his life. This wasn’t what he’d dreamed about. This was his own personal hell. At 19 years old he’d felt he’d lost it all, when it was supposed to be just the beginning. Then, while in feverish meltdown that resulted in him trashing his room, he came across something. A tape recording of him singing “E Più Ti Penso.” when he was 9 years old. It was muffled, and distorted, but he’d still felt the sign he was meant to receive. With tear filled eyes and ears pressed against speakers, Nico realized he couldn’t let it be the end. Against all the doctors advises to choose another career path, he would push on. The following year he got hearing aids, and feeling he would need his families support more than ever, he decided not to return to Chicago. The doctors warned that while he only needed the hearing aids to help with background noises, eventually he would have to move up on higher levels, to help with voices and conversation. Nico, determined to keep going, thanked them and then kindly asked them to fuck off. He knew they were just trying to help, but they weren’t. He didn’t need constant reminders that he was facing odds that were against him, he just needed encouragement that maybe, just maybe he could beat them. Maybe, just maybe, he was meant to do more because of them.
A few weeks after he turned 20, it was announced that his father’s grandmother, who still resided in Italy, was sick. Nico’s father, unable to leave home due to the amount of medical bills he and his wife now had to pay off, requested Nico’s eldest brother, Gio, to travel Italy to care for her. It surprised no one when Nico’s father asked this of his brother, but it surprised everyone when Gio requested that Nico go with him. Gio felt Nico wasn’t going to get anywhere stuck living with their parents, and felt it might be good for him to get out in the world again. Nico wasn’t sure at first, but when his brother reminded him that he had nothing left to lose, he couldn’t find a reason to disagree. So, together, they traveled to Venezia, Italy. And the rest was history. After months of caring for their great grandmother, Nico and his brother grew apart of the city. For the first time in a long time, Nico felt like he was alive again. The beauty of the city intoxicated him, and the sounds of opera music pouring from various windows as he walked to the market every day made his heart swell with a memory and passion. And not long after their great grandmother’s passing, Nico announced to his brother and his family, that he would be staying in Italy. At first there was concern, and hesitance, but quickly everyone realized this was something Nico needed to do. Besides, he’d “only be there for a year, tops”. Needless to say that one year, turned into two, and Nico has no intention of stopping. In his first year, with the help of locals he’d grown close with while caring for his great grandmother, he managed to get a small place in Castello and a job at Tinta bookstore. It wasn’t ideal, nor was it anything that Nico had ever fathomed for himself. But he loved it. And at nights, when all of Italy is quiet, he finds himself finding solitude in empty churches and burrows, singing as much as he can, for as long as his situation will allow him. Some days he even stops to sing a little tune for the nameless faces strolling through Biennale Gardens. Nico has no idea where he’s going from here, but he knows that much like his hearing, he can only sit in for the ride.
PERSONALITY
Nico is a very soiled dove kind of spirit. He’s someone who was granted a lot of gifts, but often times feels very lost as to what to do with him. Being from a family like Nico’s has bred him to be incredibly loyal and trustworthy. He will care for you just as you care for him, and will more often then not be able to sense when someone is not being their honest self with him. Many people back in Philly will say that Nico De Luca was a shy charmer, one who was unaware of the affect of his smile. However that smile has dimmed a lot since those days, so his charm is even more humble that it once was. He can be very stubborn at times, and pessimistic, but he tries his best to keep his darkest thoughts to himself. Nico is more likely to be the guy at the parties who ends up having to put a blanket over the drunkie passed out on the floor than he is to be the one getting covered. Due to being a music student, he’s unfortunately gained the habit of being very structured. You can always expect him to arrive on time, perhaps even early. When it comes to confrontations, Nico may be silent, but he is still not someone to mess with. If it’s not his sharp words, it will be the heaviness of his fist. Although he tries to refrain from getting physical unless he deems absolutely necessary. All around he’s pretty good company.

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
You’d think that one Philly team would begin to struggle after the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory. It looked like the Flyers were going to be that team after both of their starting goalies as well as Wayne Simmonds got injured. Petr Mrazek, who was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, could help ease the pain, but he didn’t play against Montreal on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, the Flyers still won in overtime, 3-2 thanks to goals by Jake Voracek to both tie and win the game. Even Nolan Patrick appears to be making progress as a player, scoring the team’s first goal in the second period. He now has goals in two straight games and points in three straight. Alex Lyon made 25 saves for his second career win.
Now back to that injury bug thing.. It may have struck again, this time with Travis Konecny:

The Flyers take on Columbus at home Thursday night. They’re still three points behind Washington for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division, despite the Capitals losing to Tampa Bay last night, and two points behind Pittsburgh for second.
The Roundup:
According to a report, the Eagles will name wide receivers coach Mike Groh as their new offensive coordinator. Duce Staley will also stay with the team, but gets a new title as assistant head coach.
Another staffing move, as head athletic trainer Chris Peduzzi is stepping down from his post after 19 seasons with the team.
Torrey Smith hopes to stay with the Eagles in 2018.
Jaylen Watkins won’t be with the Birds next year:
The #Eagles do not plan to tender DB Jaylen Watkins as a restricted free agent, I’m told, making him a free agent-to-be. It would have been an original round tender for Watkins, who played 28 regular-season games in Philly over the past 2 years.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 20, 2018
One NovaCare doctor thinks Carson Wentz’s injury isn’t good at all:
“This is an ACL plus 2,” Dr. Kelly told the 94WIP Morning Show on Tuesday. “This is an RG3 equivalent folks. This is worrisome. Now, his good news, he had a very good surgeon — Dr. James Bradley. He’s going to have good therapy virtue of NovaCare. He’s a man of faith, which is important to me too. This guy is an excellent patient. But I think his timeline is very, very optimistic.
In December, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Wentz had surgery to “repair a torn ACL, a partially torn IT [iliotibial] band, and to clean up some meniscus damage.”
“The meter has changed from ACL recovery from six months to nine months. This is an ACL plus, at least, two ligaments. If he tore the LCL, which was wrote in the press – that’s wrong.
“What I saw in the video, he had at least three ligaments on the outside of the knee damaged. That’s requires reconstruction, that’s a long rehab. And if it were my patient, I’d be thinking nine, 10, or even 11 months.”
“What I saw in the video…”
Anyway, the Eagles added another player to fill up their 90-man roster:
Roster Move: #Eagles have signed DT Winston Craig.#FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/fvFwKqSUcz
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) February 20, 2018
The Birds might be in prime position for multiple compensatory picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Enjoy Dougie P mic’d up for the Super Bowl:

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) February 20, 2018
The Eagles have some very young cornerbacks, and most of them should stay for the 2018 season.
Down in Florida, the Phillies could get starting pitcher Jake Arrieta. Team owner John Middleton would “love” to sign an upgrade.
As for the team’s current pitchers, Zach Eflin’s legs are back to full strength after surgery to repair patella tendons in both of his knees near the end of the 2016 season:
“This is the best I’ve ever felt in my life,” Eflin said. “I feel like I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t have to worry about my knees when I go out and throw.”
Eflin gained 20 pounds of muscle since last season after pitching last year at just 198 pounds. The righthander will compete during camp for the final spot in the starting rotation unless the teams opts to sign a free-agent pitcher. He showed flashes of promise in his 22 major-league starts, and it is worth imagining what Eflin can do with full health.
He felt chronic knee pain for almost his entire life before having the surgery. The operation alleviated his pain, but the recovery took a toll on his leg strength. He came into last spring training behind the other starters and battled injuries throughout the year. Now he’s healthy, and that alone gives him a chance.
The Phils have their first exhibition against the University of Tampa tomorrow.
The Sixers return to action tomorrow night in Chicago against the Bulls. Joel Embiid wants home-court advantage in the playoffs:
On paper, the Sixers have a chance to pass Washington (33-24). They have arguably the easiest remaining schedule in the NBA. The Sixers will face only seven teams with winning records the rest of the way — the Wizards, Miami Heat (30-28), Cleveland Cavaliers (34-22), Milwaukee Bucks (32-25), Indiana Pacers (33-25), Minnesota Timberwolves (36-25), and Denver Nuggets (32-26).
They’ll face Miami, Cleveland, and Milwaukee twice. So that means only 10 games of the remaining 27 will be against teams currently with winning records.
Twenty-three of the 27 also come against squads from the East, the weaker of the two conferences.
“The last couple of games, we’ve been playing great,” said Embiid, whose squad has won five straight – all at home. “So we just have to keep the same momentum.”
In college hoops, La Salle’s upset bid fell short against 18th ranked Rhode Island as the Explorers lost 95-93 in overtime.
Tonight, St. Joe’s hosts George Mason at 7 PM, while No. 3 Villanova hosts DePaul at 8:30 PM on FS1.
In other sports news, the United States fell to the Czech Republic in a shootout in the men’s hockey tournament.
There was one short-lived rumor that LeBron James visited Malvern Prep. That was never a thing.
Yesterday was the first day for NFL teams to use the franchise tag. Miami wasted no time and put the tag on wide receiver Jarvis Landry.
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck says he won’t need a second surgery on his shoulder and is beginning to throw.
Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier wants to come back and play at an all-pro level.
The Buccaneers released running back Doug Martin after six seasons with the team.
The Dallas Mavericks reportedly have had an ugly workplace culture, led by former team president and CEO Terdema Ussery.
Serena Williams writes that she almost died from childbirth.
Rehearsal footage of Fergie’s bad national anthem rendition has been released. Was she trying to channel Marvin Gaye?
The “stick to sports” argument is not that complicated at all.
In the news, one Mastery Charter girls’ basketball player couldn’t play because she was wearing a hijab, which was not previously approved by the PIAA.
Evangelist Billy Graham has died at the age of 99.
Atlanta, Dallas, and Waco will be the first three cities for AT&T’s new 5G network.
Enjoy this crazy chase in Los Angeles.

College basketball schedule 2017: Times, TV coverage, and scores for Feb. 3
A Pac-12 showdown between Oregon and Arizona headlines what should be another wild Saturday in college hoops.
Last week, college basketball gave us just one Saturday showdown featuring a pair of top 25 teams. What was supposed to be a mild day and night of hoops turned into a wild 14-hour span loaded with upsets.
This week has the potential to give is our fill of both. There are a heavy dose of dangerous games featuring ranked favorites, but also three showcase tilts with two top 25 teams going head-to-head.
That number would be four, but the North Carolina-Notre Dame game has been pushed back to Sunday because of a water-main break of 1.5 million gallons in the towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon. The game will now be played in Greensboro on Sunday at 1 p.m., and will be televised on ESPNews.
Here are a bunch more games that will be nationally televised, but all of them will be played on Saturday.
MUST WATCH
No. 23 Purdue at No. 17 Maryland (12 p.m./ESPN)
It’s a bit mind-boggling that a program as high-profile as Maryland could be off to the best start in school history (20-2) and still be ranked no higher than 17th. The biggest reason for that is that the Terps haven’t beaten, or even played, a top-25 team yet this season. One of those facts is guaranteed to change Saturday afternoon. Maryland fans hope both of them do.
No. 5 Arizona at No. 13 Oregon (4 p.m./ESPN)
This is the only time these two will meet in the regular season, which means the game will have even larger implications for both the Pac-12 championship and a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament than it would otherwise.
No. 8 Kentucky at No. 24 Florida (8:15 p.m./ESPN)
It’s hard not to view this game as a referendum on Florida, a team the computers love, but which has just one win over a team that appears to be a lock to make the tournament. If the Gators are able to win, it will also make the SEC race among the three teams at the top of the league standings awfully interesting for the next month.
SHOULD WATCH
No. 9 Virginia at Syracuse (12 p.m./ESPN2)
What the committee chooses to do with Syracuse seems destined to be one of the most interesting storylines of Selection Sunday. The Orange of a handful of just inexplicable losses, but they also seem more likely than not to finish in the top half of the best conference in the country. Racking up a few quality wins like this one would make everyone’s job at least a tad easier.
Pittsburgh at No. 21 Duke (1 p.m./CBS)
Coach K back.
Iowa State at No. 3 Kansas (2 p.m./ESPN)
Whatever the hell is going on off the court in Lawrence seems to be the only thing capable of derailing the work the Jayhawks are putting in on it. The distractions keep piling up, but so do the wins. Only time will tell if that trend can continue.
Kansas State at No. 2 Baylor (3 p.m./ESPNews)
What is up with Baylor always playing on ESPNews? The sports world rarely needs to remember what channel ESPNews is anymore, and 99.9 percent of the time we do, it’s because Baylor is playing a close game against somebody. The Bears are the real deal. Bump whatever crap game is on ESPN2 or ESPNU and let’s end this trend before the public starts catching on.
Xavier at No. 22 Creighton (3 p.m./Fox)
It’s a Big East battle between the league’s biggest first-half disappointment, and what had been the league’s most pleasant surprise before Mo Watson Jr. went down. Creighton appears to be settling into life without Watson, posting back-to-back wins, the most recent of which being a monster road upset of No. 16 Butler. Xavier, meanwhile, finds itself out of the rankings for the first time all year and in desperate need of building some momentum in order to avoid this season being remembered as a massive letdown.
Illinois State at Wichita State (8 p.m./ESPN2)
It’s the game of the year in the Missouri Valley, as 11-0 Illinois State hits the road to take on 10-1 preseason favorite Wichita State. You should watch. That’s why the game is under this subheading.
Santa Clara at No. 1 Gonzaga (10 p.m./ESPN2)
Who cares if Gonzaga is a 22-point favorite? It’s the No. 1 team in the country and they’re 23-0. You should at least check in.
WORTH WATCHING UNLESS YOU HAVE A VALID EXCUSE
Georgia at No. 19 South Carolina (2 p.m./ESPN2)
Georgia already squandered a huge opportunity against a depleted Kentucky team earlier this week. They need this one or the game against Florida Tuesday night to keep any realistic shot of earning an at-large bid alive.
Connecticut at No. 14 Cincinnati (4 p.m./ESPN2)
UConn is really bad and Cincinnati is really good, but sometimes cool stuff happens when these two meet.
youtube
Ohio State at Michigan (6 p.m./ESPN2)
I’m told there is some animosity between these two programs.
St. John’s at No. 4 Villanova (8 p.m./CBS Sports Network)
St. John’s has spent the whole season sprinting between two extremes — “Is this the worst power conference team in the country?” and “These guys might actually be okay.” Who knows what they’re going to do in Philly Saturday night.
No. 11 UCLA at Washington (10:30 p.m./Pac-12 Network)
It’s a big game, so Washington will try, which is always a good thing. And even if they stop trying in the second, there are going to be a lot of talented players scoring a lot of points, which is also always a good thing. For us, at least.
IF YOU WANT TO JUST CHECK THE BOX SCORE THAT’S FINE ... BUT CHECK THE BOX SCORE
Wagner at Fairleigh Dickinson (11 a.m./ESPNU)
It’s nationally televised pre-noon college basketball on a Saturday, which means you have an excuse to drink before lunch. Don’t let anybody tell you any differently.
Seton Hall at Georgetown (12 p.m./FS1)
Seton Hall is the first team out in Chris Dobbertean’s latest bracket projection, so this is sort of a big deal for Kevin Willard’s team.
Akron at Ohio (12 p.m./CBS Sports Network)
It’s a battle of the top two teams in the MAC’s East Division, which is a bit misleading since Akron is 9-0 and Ohio is 5-4.
Duquesne at Dayton (12:30 p.m./NBC Sports Network)
These are the types of games Dayton can’t afford to slip up in if they want to have a relaxing Selection Sunday.
Rutgers at Penn State (1 p.m./ESPNU)
Rutgers comes into this game 340th out of 347 Division-I teams in three-point field goal percentage. It’s not the only reason the Scarlet Knights have lost 10 of their last 11, but it’s up there.
Texas at TCU (1 p.m./ESPNews)
At this point you have to assume that Pitt fans are watching every TCU game with same confusion, focus and despair as an ex-boyfriend scrolling through his old girl’s pictures with “new friends” on Facebook.
Marquette at DePaul (2 p.m./FS1)
I wrote about Marquette finally regaining its old mojo last week, and the Golden Eagles promptly dropped two in a row. If they lose to DePaul, then yeah, that’s entirely on me.
Indiana State at Northern Iowa (2 p.m./CBS Sports Network)
Not the game of the week in the Valley, but that’s okay.
George Washington at Richmond (2:30 p.m./NBC Sports Network)
Is it possible for a college basketball game to be too America? Watch and find out.
Ole Miss at Vanderbilt (3 p.m./ESPNU)
You don’t need to check the box score. I’m just being nice here because the game is on TV.
Miami at NC State (3 p.m./ACC Network)
After briefly holding the ACC’s “I have no idea what to make of this team” flag for about a week, NC State is now firmly back in the “they’re bad” camp. Miami is currently second in the “I have no idea what to make of this team” standings, sitting just behind Syracuse, and just ahead of Georgia Tech.
No. 6 Louisville at Boston College 3 p.m./ACC Network)
Every time we all agree that a team in the ACC is really good, they seem to tank that weekend. Louisville is that team heading into February, which means the Cardinals might be on upset alert in Chestnut Hill. Or they might win by 50. It’s the bleeping ACC, nobody knows.
Minnesota at Illinois (4 p.m./Big Ten Network)
After looking like the Big Ten’s most pleasant surprise, Minnesota has now lost five in a row. A February season recovery has to start Saturday.
VCU at St. Bonaventure (4 p.m./CBS Sports Network)
Will Wade quietly continues to do a fantastic job at VCU, which enters the weekend tied atop the A-10 standings with Dayton.
William & Mary at Towson (4 p.m./NBC Sports Network)
After a disappointing first half of conference play, preseason Colonial favorite William & Mary appears to be hitting its stride. The Tribe is averaging 95.0 ppg over its last four contests, all blowout victories.
Utah at Stanford (4:30 p.m./FS1)
The Utes have not won a game at Maples Pavilion since 1971. Larry Krystkowiak’s club has been close in recent years, losing there by a point in 2014, and in overtime last season.
Memphis at Central Florida (5 p.m./ESPNews)
Memphis, which has some work to do if it wants to make the tournament in Tubby Smith’s first season, gutted out a 70-65 win over UCF just two weeks ago.
Oklahoma State at No. 7 West Virginia (5 p.m./ESPNU)
Brad Underwood suddenly has the Cowboys rolling. OSU has won four straight, and will be out for revenge against a West Virginia team that embarrassed them at home on Dec. 30.
Arkansas at Missouri (6 p.m./SEC Network)
Postseason idea for college basketball: force the eight worst major conference teams to play in a single elimination postseason tournament. Here’s the catch: losers advance and keep playing.
Can you imagine the level of pissed off that you’d see in a Missouri-Oregon State or LSU-Rutgers semifinal game? You can’t tell me that wouldn’t me more entertaining than the CIT.
Colorado State at UNLV (6 p.m./CBS Sports Network)
It has been a rough go for Marvin Menzies in his first season with the Rebels. The good news is that the Mountain West is wide open, so there’s still some hope for both these teams to get hot at the perfect time and make some March memories.
Oklahoma at Texas Tech (7 p.m./ESPNU)
It’s been a year to forget for the Sooners. One bright spot has been freshman Kameron McGusty, who could become the first Oklahoma player since 1991 to score in double figures in 10 consecutive games if he hits the mark on Saturday against Texas Tech.
SMU at Tulsa (7 p.m./ESPNews)
We should talk more about Shake Milton. All of us. Semi Ojeleye too.
No. 18 Saint Mary’s at San Diego (7 p.m./Spectrum SportsNet)
Can we not get this top-20 team on a real channel? Why does this keep happening? Gonzaga’s always playing on real channels.
Auburn at Alabama (8:30 p.m./SEC Network)
It’s just like the football rivalry except completely different in every conceivable way.
Texas A&M at LSU (9 p.m./ESPNU)
Your weekly LSU DGAF Meter update:
Extremely high.
UC Irvine at Long Beach State (11 p.m./ESPNU)
This is a very down year for the Big West, which features just two teams with records above .500. The best of that elite group is UC Irvine, which sits atop the standings with a 6-2 mark. Plus, their nickname is the Anteaters, so if they make the tournament we all win.

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
It was a rare night off for Philly sports. No pro or college teams were in action.
We could discuss more about the Eagles and their struggle of a win over the Raiders.
But we’ll kick things off with the Sixers, specifically Joel Embiid and his bid to be an All-Star starter this year.
Last year, he was third in Eastern Conference frontcourt fan voting behind LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo, but got passed up for Jimmy Butler. That was fine, because many thought he would be a reserve in the game.
That didn’t happen, and he got passed up for… Paul Millsap. He wasn’t happy about that, and neither were fans.
This year is much different. He’s the healthiest he’s ever been, even if he still isn’t playing both games of a back-to-back. His averages in points, assists, and rebounds are slightly up, and he’s got other help on the court in the likes of Ben Simmons and JJ Redick (when he’s not shooting bricks).
His 46-point performance against the Lakers in LA this year is just a sample of why he should be a starter. He’s the best center in the East.
The Twitter voting campaign began on Monday, and it lasts until January 15. He hasn’t tweeted anything himself yet, but we’re all expecting something soon.
The Sixers play the Trail Blazers in Portland tomorrow night on TNT.
The Roundup:
Doug Pederson had his day after press conference after Monday night’s 19-10 win. He still hasn’t decided if the starters will play yet in week 17:
“It’s going to be day-to-day, quite honestly,” Pederson said. “Obviously, injuries play a factor in that. You’re only limited to 46 and you can only put seven guys down. So if you do the math, some of your starters will have to play.”
Is Dannell Ellerbe the new starting middle linebacker?
There’s also a chance Sidney Jones plays Sunday, but that’s uncertain as well.
How should we feel about the not so dominating win over the Raiders?
Kevin’s got your ten takeaways from the game, starting things off with a tweaked Billy Madison quote.
After running away from a fumble, Chris Long apologized on Twitter:
I sincerely apologize to the city of Philadelphia for running away from a live ball. I was a bit confused as to there being a live ball. Obviously. Glad we could get off the field!!! Thanks for bringing it fans!!! Ugly win over a pretty loss!!!
— Chris Long (@JOEL9ONE) December 26, 2017
Evidently I had too much Mountain Dew
— Chris Long (@JOEL9ONE) December 26, 2017
Keep him here forever.
—
The Flyers activated goalie Michal Neuvirth off IR and sent Alex Lyon back to Lehigh Valley. They’ll play tomorrow night against the Panthers.
Four prospects are participating in the World Junior Championships that began yesterday in Buffalo.
—
In college hoops tonight, Penn will host Delaware State at 7 PM, while No. 1 Villanova will play DePaul in Chicago in their Big East opener on CBS Sports Network.

That’s somehow legal. Nice job by Suns coach Jay Triano knowing that.
In an interview with Bob Wischusen on The Michael Kay Show, Giants safety Landon Collins called cornerback Eli Apple “a cancer.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich explains why charity work is important to him:
“Because we’re rich as hell, and we don’t need it all, and other people need it,” Popovich said. “Then, you’re an ass if you don’t give it. Pretty simple.”
Astros first base coach Rich Dauer almost died during the team’s World Series parade.
Former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Johnny Bower passed away at the age of 93.

In the news, a person was ejected from their car after a crash on I-295.
Erie got a ton of snow in two days.
A tough night for Chrissy Teigen:
