ok my honest opinion on the looks from todays video
both of their first outfits were so bad i don't understand how this is what they chose for "something fashionable" that they wanted to see the other person wear 😭😭 HATED the sunglasses for phil he looked a little bit better when he took them off but still he really couldn't pull that outfit off. and why was dan making fun of him for dressing "like a child stuck in 1997" only to precede to dress him like a parody of a boyband star stuck in 2002.
dans first outfit was not much better it just kind of felt like such a random assortment of items like the shirt was okay i guess? the shorts were?? short?? ok ?? idk NEXT
the second look for phil was my favourite he was honestly kind of serving. i'd just remove the scarf. sidenote dan totally put phil in those stompers to fulfill his fantasy of being shorter and smaller than phil
dans second look was so much just phils everyday outfit but it was pretty cute like he just dressed up in his bfs clothes 🥰 bc he loves his bf 🥰 and i do love that jacket and it looked cute on dan too i think
honestly i thought dan was kinda serving in the purple suit like if it was just styled differently he could rock it?? or even better if it was (almost) the same cut but black velvet hehehhehe. hehehehe
i also feel like phil could make the cowboy outfit work if he just removed some stuff especially whatever was going on on his upper half but he could keep the shorts and boots maybeeee

I was hoping to have all 3 of my Freela kids ready by tomorrow, been falling behind because life... but the *STAR* attraction of the three is finally finished! (haha get it? *star* cus she's named after a star AHAHAH)
So this is my official redesign of my Freela baby, Turanga Violet Star Fry.
✨🌌✨
*Is named after the Violet Dwarf Star. You know, the star that literally forced Leela to face her true feelings more than ever and trust Fry with the most important thing in the universe, and also made her realise she could not deny her undying love for Fry any longer.
*Pronouns she/her
*Family pet name is Hexy Chicky
*She is a goth punk rebel without a cause
*Angsty Teen (16 years I'd say roughly of age)
*Is besties w/Bender
*Has an ✨ICONIC✨ Witch's Black cat (Fang, Morris and Munda's cat's baby 🥹)
*Her hair has mutations where it glows the colour of the violet drawf star. The glow gets brighter and engulfs her whole hair whenever she is closed to the encyclapod or anything that is in danger and needs to be saved, this includes beings, and whole entire planets. Certain situations one might say.
*She has a connection to the encyclapod and knows where it can be found at any given time. She learns she can communicate to plants, animals, basically anything living.
*Her hair can also change length and texture to best suit her needs. Think like Bayonetta (best video game witch IMO she is boss queen) Violet can use har hair as a weapon to defend herself. She also learns she can grow tenticles at will from her hair, very much like her other two siblings.
*She is a bad ass boss bitch like her momma
*Has big fuck off death stomper boots, just like her momma
*Is an environmental and animal activist like her momma
*Practices witch craft due to her innate connection with nature all that is living.
*Will spend hours debating with her brother Phil and Professor Farnsworth and Cubert about what is science and spirituality, what can be explained and what cannot be explained and try to either thwart them or find a way to bridge the two together.
*Bisexual / Demisexul
🧡💜
The Chicky on her shirt is the chicken she's known as in the family, they all have chicken nicknames cus of the chicken hats. I am working on a family photo of them all as we speak. Thank you so much to the incredible @ladybender for the inspiration for this idea. 🥹
Still working on her story and everything but I finally have her design ready and I am so happy and proud. If you ever saw spam posts on DeviantART of a user called FryplusLeela4Eva2getha that was me and I posted artworks of Violet and her two siblings Phil and Sam. Redesigns of them coming soon! I'm just so happy I was able to get one of them out at least before the drop of the first new episode haha.

by animal_crusher9000
"Tommy, I'm an adult now. I don't have the time to be jacking off and eating cornflakes!" Wilbur stressed, waving his hands around and pacing back and forth dramatically as he spoke.
"Jacking- Ew, Wil!! Don't talk to me about how lonely you get at night- Just- Will you calm the fuck down and come eat breakfast with me?!" The blond shrieked, a grossed out flush dusting his cheeks.

Friday, December 17: UFO, “Hot N’ Ready”
R.I.P. Pete Way (1950-2020), Paul Raymond (1945-2019)
For a few golden years, UFO opened their concerts with the rowdy charge of “Hot N’ Ready”, and it was such an awesome kickoff that the band stuck with it for a little while after Michael Schenker left. The track captured UFO’s sozzled alchemy in full, with Schenker’s elegant lead giving way to a barroom stomper of a riff, while Phil Mogg goaded and swaggered with a grit and confidence that almost convinced everyone he was a bigger star than he actually was. Pete Way’s insistent bass thump grounded the proceedings, leaving Andy Parker to swing with greater flexibility and finesse than he was usually given credit for (including by this listener). “Hot N’ Ready” was the sort of no-frills fun hard rocker that made the late ‘70s a reference point to so many future megastars, embodying the guts of that era and holding up far better than anyone might’ve expected.

so Captain Carter going to the futuristic year of 2011 raises some questions about who will be on the avengers team of this timeline.
clearly Captain Carter and Hawkeye.
but would Tony Stark be on the team? I feel like because of the hydra stomper being around in wwII that armor suits would be common place. I could see Phil Coulson or James Rhodes being War Stomper pilots.
Maybe Nick fury space faxes Carol Denver (space pagers are for emergencies) that they found Captain Carter and Captain Marvel shows up to join the avengers right away.
maybe in this timeline Betty Ross grew up with Carter has her hero. and Betty Jumped at the chance to help her father make more super soldiers resulting in Betty becoming the hulk instead of Bruce.
Natasha is mostly unchanged except that whiplash's whips are now standard issue for the black widows.
and maybe thor is just thor unless a bunch of armored shield agents stomped him out.

Byzanthian Neckbeard Reveal New EP, ‘Extinction’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
I have little clue what daily life is like on Guernsey, an island in the English Channel near France, but I imagine it provide fertile breeding ground for dismal, doom-laden creations of all sorts and shades. It's been four years since we last heard from one of its chief inhabitants, BYZANTHIAN NECKBEARD, but now they've rebounded with a grim new spin called 'Extinction' (2019), which Doomed & Stoned is pleased to premiere for your listening delight.
A bastardization of the "Byzantine," a word that carries with it a wealth of historical intrigue. Byzanthian Neckbeard conjures images of a gruff, grungy, fingers-to-the-bone kind of existence, where shaving is the least of one's worries -- surviving the night to face another day is the chief concern of any living creature. The first thing you'll notice about Extinction, in fact, is its primitive quality. Deep bass, harsh vocals, a stern guitar tone, and a "heave-ho" beat calls to mind galley slaves working the oars of a mighty Roman battle ship to the incessant beat of the drum.
There is an almost heartbeat-like dimension to the rhythms of Extinction, giving each track a visceral quality that immediately connects with the listener on a bodily level. Just keep listening, you'll notice it soon taking you over, if not in the opening number, "Coffin Bomb," then certainly by the record's concluding title track.
Keep an eye out of Extinction by Byzanthian Neckbeard, dropping this Friday, September 27th (pre-order here).
Give ear...
Extinction by Byzanthian Neckbeard
Some Buzz
“Stranded on an island enveloped by fog, lost in the English channel and forgotten by time there is only doom.”
Byzanthian Neckbeard dragged itself into existence in early 2013 to set about creating their own brand of sonic doom. One year later, in August 2014 the fruits of their labours was inflicted on the world when “From The Clutches of Oblivion” was released. Later that year guitarist Jon Langlois chose to depart the band.
The loss of a member unleashed a new, heavier, 3 headed beast set to walk an altered path. Dan added a second voice to the mix, giving the songs a new direction. Retaining their signature groove and mixing different aspects of Sludge, Doom, Thrash, Black and Death the band has moved on to plumb new sonic depths. From those depths, new horrors have arisen. The creation of the second album has been a long and arduous road, but in 2019 the second age is finally upon us.
Some bands quite simply embody their name in every shape and form, and when it comes to Byzanthian Neckbeard... you get the picture quickly. Riff-laden doom is on offer on this follow-up EP, after their début From the Clutches of Oblivion took them out of their native Guernsey and straight onto the New Blood Stage at UK’s Bloodstock Festival.
'Extinction' takes a while to limber up, but once “Coffin Bomb” gets into the swing of things, the trio put on a no-punches-pulled performance across each of the three tracks. Phil Skyrme’s guttural vocals match up to the rough-and-fuzzy riffing, matched perfectly to Dan Robilliard’s muscular bass playing and Paul Etasse’s precise and groove-driven drumming. “Extinction” takes us out with a seven-minute stomper.
Thus the EP ends, ready to be looped again until more material emerges from the island-bound miscreants who go by the name of Byzanthian Neckbeard.

No update pics because I let the heads rest yesterday, don’t know how much I’ll get going today because I might need to do some real life stuff. Usually I do the heads in the morning, don’t need to color match so I can use what ever light source is handy, but don’t put any time constraints on it. If we real life around here it’s usually in the morning to get it done and out of the way.
Not that I can’t do the heads in the afternoon. I have some times. It just all depends on everything. And with air dry heads and damp weather some resting never hurts.
Especially if I can get out and get some supplies.
I cropped a pic of Kumik Fletch and wonder if it’ll turn up later on Dr Phil being used by a catfish. If he says he’s a doll he’s being literal.
Kumik Fletch’s head is about the limit of realism for me before I’d have to kick him in to Uncanny Valley. So that might answer why my sculpts and art look like they do.
And if you notice none of the realistic ones have brushable hair.
The only one I would have considered putting on one of those seamless phican bods with attachments is my Thang from Facepool-
Anything from Facepool looks great but their necks are too long so you’d need power tools to make the fit.
If there was a head I could pass off as Adam Cooper from Swan Lake I’d rethink. That could be a barely dressed plastic hunk to have around.
The only swans I have on my computer right now but you get the idea. I hope the one on the far left is the one from the DVD who can jump really high. One of the Little Swans is pure peck your eyes out attitude.
Found the boy doll clothes. They were where they should have been but the bag they were in was under some other bags. Was too busy looking for the Stompers for McDonalds to be able to make any real dents in any other organizing. Not ready to give up an old red Hamburgler jail wagon thing that I’ve had forever yet. You know how it is when you’ve had a long relationship with a thing. And it’s pretty beat up.
Will check to see if they have one already and go from there. I know they don’t have any Stompers and my quad will be a start. Tossing in a Hot Wheel too.
And there’s still another batch of stuff I haven’t been able to place which is the dollhouse furniture I played with a lot as a child. They’re around, there’s just too much hoard in general in the house and organizing gets derailed by having to stop and something else.
Or the anemia fatigue :/

Santa Clara #16: History of the Grateful Dead Birth 01
San Francisco, home town of the Grateful Dead.
What does it mean when they did Fare Thee Well at GD50 in Santa Clara near San Francisco?
Here, I'm going to give you a brief overview of their birth history and era background here, for my own memo.
If there is any mistake in the description, please point it out. (Not confident about their high school descriptions. I would appreciate it if you could correct it completely)
Well, first, until the warlocks became the Grateful Dead in 1965.
What is an Acid Test? How did they participate ? What does the Grateful Dead mean?... For those of you who know, it's just a recent story, but if it's just an image, it'd be great if it's a reference for young people.
The United States in the 1950s after World War II was an era where riots against black racism were rippling, while war victories flourished. On the one hand, the Korean War, also known as the proxy war of the East-West Cold War, which started in June 1950, lasted until July 53, but it was also the beginning of the Cold War era.
Phil, 14, started trumpet in 54, Jerry, 15, started playing guitar in 57, first experience marijuana and drops out.
In 58 Billy started taking drum lessons at age 12, and in 59 Jerry went to high school for about a year, but somehow joins the Army. Jerry, who had only experience of playing electric guitar there, says he was self-taught and memorized the acoustic guitar. 9 months more in the Army and after discharge, life of only playing guitar begins in earnest.
It was 59 years since Ken Kesey took the official LSD test at the Palo Alto clinic. (LSD=Ryselgine acid diethylamide is a synthetic drug developed in 1938. by Swiss Dr. Albert Hoffmann. Originally developed as a gynecological pain killer. Dr. Hoffmann, who accidentally took it back on April 16, 1943! What? What the hell is this? The research begins as hearing aids. It was still legal back then. Some say the CIA took an interest and promoted the research. )
And the '60s. In 61 Kennedy became president, the United States surpassed the population of college students for the first time in world history. It was a rich era when national steel production decreased by more than 3 percent and wages increased by more than 2 percent. The only thing that got richer was the white middle class, and beneath it were the racist and poor black people.
Jerry finally meets Robert Hunter in 1960. Meanwhile Mickey Hart drops out of high school and joins the Air Force.
It was 61 when Timothy Leary, a Harvard teacher, had his first drug trial in the summer of '60, woke up with LSD, and became a college dropout. It was around this time that I said Turn on, tune in, drop out.
"That time Jerry and Hunter formed ""Bob and Jerry""" Jerry, waking up to bluegrass, as he gains members, begins practice banjo.
"It was 62 years ago in 59 when Ken Kesey, who had the opportunity to try LSD at the Rev. Military Hospital, announced ""The Cuckoo's lap." The same year there was the Cuban Crisis, the Awful Nuclear War, and WW3.
In 62 Years Bob Weir made a fateful encounter with John Perry Barlow.
Meanwhile Jerry meets Pigpen (the barn) aka Ron McKernan and buys a banjo from Dana Morgan's music store clerk, Bill Kreutzmann.
Phil Lesh meets Tom Constanten and hears Jerry play for the first time. Meeting of the members of the Dead is about to begin.
63 years ago Kennedy was assassinated. Now it's pretty accurate that Vice President Johnson pulled the trigger.
It was in July of '63 when Ken Kesey really formed the Merry Planksters, who appeared on the 'Cuckoo' lap, and bused across the US. The driver was that Neal Cassady.
Jerry was active and changing band names back then.
1960:Bob and Jerry
1961: Garcia, Leicester & Hunter -->Jerry Garcia and Friends--> hunder Mountain Tub Thumpers--> Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers--> Hart Valley Driftersthough
1962:Asphalt Jungle Boys--> Asphalt Jungle Boys--> Jerry Garcia & David Nelson--> Hart Valley Drifters--> Thunder Mountain Tub Thumpers
1963:Wildwood Boys
Jerry, 20, married Sarah Ruppenthal in 1963. And in December Heather Garcia was born and Jerry will be off to his first and last straight job of his life. I was a guitar teacher.
And this year Pigpen and Jerry who formed a band called The Second Story Men at the age of 17, will be in a band together. Band name is Zodiacs.
Drums by Bill Kreutzmann. Finally the members are back together This band was an electric blues band that incorporated Pigpen's stance.
Although the Civil Rights Amendment Act was passed by Congress in 1964, racism did not go away, and in 64 the Tonkin Bay incident (later the American demonstration and discovery) occurred, and President Johnson declared war on Vietnam in a TV speech. And it's the beginning of the silent Vietnam War, which continues for 12 years.
In '64 Jerry's only bluegrass band that Hunter and Jerry worked with became Black Mountain Boys. Sandy Rothman and David Nelson were in. It was 64 years ago when Jerry met David Grisman.
And then a band will be born that will take Jerry's action.
Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Championsです。
メンバーは、 Jerry Garcia 21歳 - Bob Weir 16歳 - Ron "Pigpen" McKernan 18歳 - David Nelson - Marshall Leicester - Bob Matthews - Tom Stone - David Parker でした。
And then the year 1965. Pigpen insists on the band's introduction of electric.
Dana Morgan Jr on bass and Bill Kreutzmann on drums and finally that Warlocks is born.
メンバーは、Jerry 、Bobby、Pigpen、Billy、Dana Morgan Jr でした。
Debut show is May 5th at Magoo's Pizza Parlor.
Jerry reunites with Phil Lesh and invites him to Bass. Phil never played the bass until this time.
It was June 18th of that year that Phil joined Dana Morgan Jr. on bass after just two weeks of bass practice. The name is Warlocks, but it has brought the early Grateful Dead members!
This February '65, black extremist charisma, Malcolm X, was shot dead by three blacks while speaking at a rally in Harlem, NYC. The hatred of black people has also been exposed.
And in March, the full-fledged intervention into North Vietnam, the Rolling Thunder Operation, and the North Bombing began.
11/365 Warlocks performed a DEMO recording at Golden Gate Studios for Autumn Records in San Francisco was released. The DEMO recording at this time was named Emergency Crew and lasted all 6 songs and 20 minutes.
On Nov. 5, the Warlocks will have a fateful encounter with Bill Graham at the Family Dog benefit at Mime Troupe.
12/01/1965 attending the Acid Test sponsored by Ken Kesey. Warlocks played all night long. The Acid Test was originally a test to find out the purity of gold, but it was known as taking LSD produced by Stanley Owsley, which was still legal synthetic drug at the time, to investigate the effect on the human body. This Acid Test gave Jerry a strong impression, and he continued to prophesy drug affirmations for life.
And in the same December, the band name will finally be the Grateful Dead. At this time, Jerry was 23, Phil was 25, Bobby was 18, Billy was 19 and Pigpen was 20.
Members of the gathering at Phil's house, apparently opened a large dictionary properly, and the letters just happened to be the Grateful Dead.
"The meaning was ""Grateful Dead,"" a word based on folklore." It doesn't mean to be euthanized. The importance of folklore is...
A Traveler Meets People Who Refuse To Burry The Body Of A Dead Person Without Paying His Debt. He would give people his last cent and bury the dead. After that, by his miraculous power, he saves his life or gets out of danger. And you know it was thanks to the deceased for the healing.
Also in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, in the part concerning Pharaoh's tomb, the phrase comes up this Grateful Dead.
So in the land of the night, the Sun's ship is pulled by the "Grateful Dead"
Dec.10, '65, performing under the name of the Grateful Dead for the first time at the Fillmore.
to be continued.... It is.

Pitchfork Music Festival 2017: 7/14-7/16
Clif’s Cassette Collage
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Last year’s Pitchfork featured wild-card non-headliners and a deep rest of the festival. This year? Not so much. LCD Soundsystem headlined last year’s Lollapalooza Sunday, and this year saw them headlining the first day of a smaller festival. Saturday featured a massive farewell tour in the form of A Tribe Called Quest. Sunday’s headliner was Solange, an artist coming off of her career best work that held up even in the face of her more famous sister’s equally strong work. There were reunions and rare performers. This was going to be the biggest Pitchfork ever, right?
Well, only if you’re talking about the length of the lines. Instead, Pitchfork somehow retained its intimacy (besides those lines). Much of the music was undoubtedly laid back, even the hip hop sets decidedly minimal as opposed to past ones by the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper. There was room for the experimental, the theatrical, and the combination of the two. Overall, the festival continues to book daringly and, more importantly, more women and people of color than almost any other major pop music festival. Like last year, there was no one true standout the way there has been in past years, but there were still sets that exceeded, met, and performed below my expectations.
Read on as I sort the many different sets I saw into distinct categories relating to everything from content to how they fit within the quintessential festival experience.
THE NOSTALGIC
Ride
It may have been delayed by over twenty minutes. You may not have been able to hear lead singer Mark Gardener that well. Their new album may be just okay. But as soon as Ride played the opening notes to “Seagull”, you knew exactly why even a 20-years-later version of the band is booked late in the day to play a major festival. Simply put, the songs from Nowhere and their early EPs were flat-out gorgeous.
The Feelies
Talk about a band that takes their time, whether it’s releasing albums or even just building up a song. The Feelies took from their earliest (Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth) and their latest (2011′s Here Before and this year’s In Between). Lead singer Glenn Mercer’s gentle voice may have sounded a bit weak at times, but the band’s jangly guitar pop and krautrock arrangements were perfect for grooving on a temperate Saturday afternoon.
Arab Strap
One of the best sets of the festival came from a band that I love that I totally expected to not translate live. The Scottish electronica-imbued spoken word from Arab Strap sounded great, with more singing and noise than expected. Front-man Aidan Moffat sucked down Four Star Pilsners and complained how hot the stage was as if they were litanies in one of his songs. His penchant for remembering the lyrics of his own songs is impressive, and even if he had to read them by the time the anthemic “The First Big Weekend” came along, he was just as much the star of the show as the rest of the band.
THE OLD-TIMEY
Hamilton Leithauser
The Walkmen were always a band whose slower songs recalled waltzes or stories told by your grandparents. Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam Batmanglij’s I Had A Dream That You Were Mine one-upped that last year, with its clinking pianos and string flourishes going for an unabashedly retro aesthetic, including everything from doo wop to folktales. Live, Leithauser and his band recreated that perfectly. He’s always had a hell of a voice, his wail equally as strong as his Dylan-esque sneer. “Rough Going (I Won’t Let Up)” was an exemplary intro, “A 1000 Times” a giant sing-along, “1959″ an effective vocal solo as opposed to the duet album version.
As Joey Purp played from the Blue Stage, Leithauser recalled being sonically overwhelmed by the nearby XX. “Everybody left NYC...because they couldn’t afford a practice space without a fucking band next door,” he shared before launching into the gorgeous “Where The Truth Is...” Old and bitter’s never sounded so sweet.
THE MELANCHOLY
Angel Olsen
As a band in matching suits entered the stage, I thought to myself, “Am I really about to see Angel Olsen?” The last time I had seen her was at Lincoln Hall on the Burn Your Fire For No Witness Tour, and apparently, she’s gotten way bigger since then. Her set started out strong with some country-indebted kiss offs: “High & Wild”, “Shut Up Kiss Me”, “Give It Up”, and “Not Gonna Kill You” all retained both the treble-heavy sheen and lyrical rawness of their studio versions. But the back half of the set was enough to put you to sleep in succession. Half Way Home’s “Acrobat” is a great song, as is “Sister”, the laid-back and jazzy “Those Were The Days”, and “Woman”, but after the first four in a row, they only served to bring you down.
Weyes Blood
Natalie Mering’s amazing, Joni Mitchell-esque voice is best suited for a club setting. Even last year’s Weyes Blood album Front Row Seat to Earth, a characteristically upbeat one for Mering’s standards, is not really ideal for a weekend day festival slot. Her voice on “Generation Why” and “Used to Be” was stunning and she either sang by herself on stage or played keys in front of her band, and the lap steel guitar on “Seven Words” gave a haunting quality to that song, but the set overall was too low key to keep non-die hard fans interested.
THE MIND-NUMBING
Colin Stetson
You know what you're getting with Colin Stetson, but that doesn’t stop him from mesmerizing me every time. His Pitchfork set was his most impressive from a curatorial standpoint. Stetson picked songs that showed off his limber playing (“The Righteous Wrath of an Honorable Man”), creative percussion (“Judges”), and even Aphex Twin influences (“Between Water and Wind). Earlier this year, Stetson released an album that was good but didn’t offer much new, but during his Pitchfork set, Not one song sounded like another.
William Tyler
The word “virtuoso” is tossed around a lot, but it’s actually appropriate for William Tyler. With a great band at his side (including Phil Cook, doing double duty with Tyler and Hiss Golden Messenger), Tyler played most of last year’s Modern Country to sheer perfection. From the summery “Sunken Garden” to the described “country meets krautrock” of “I’m Gonna Live Forever”, the set was unexpectedly loud and jammy. The percussion breakdown of “Gone Clear” was even more haunting than it was on record, “The Great Unwind” noisy. He closed with “Highway Anxiety”, whose recognizable opening riffs caused anything but a sense of dread--more a sense of comfort and calm amidst a sea of festival-goers.
THE BLISTERING
Jeff Rosenstock
The most energetic set of the festival came from something I never thought I’d ever hear at Pitchfork: something resembling ska. Indeed, Jeff Rosenstock and his band played songs off of last year’s Worry to devoted fans who knew every single word. Rosenstock took the opportunity to do what he usually does--be a shithead with a sense of humor. The dynamic frontman walked out to Weird “Al” Yankovich Red Hot Chili Peppers parody “Bedrock Anthem”. He had the crowd do two different waves. He had a couple great wisecracks (“I'd like to give a shout-out to the Pitchfork worker who got fired for booking us at this festival.”) and admitted that he and his band received $7,500 to play, a hefty sum for self-labelled shitty punks but not for pretty much anybody else. All this Rosenstock brought with the desire to get the crowd to shout along, mosh, and look out for each other.
The crowd moshes--and cools off with sprayed water--during Jeff Rosenstock
Danny Brown
I’ve seen Danny Brown 3 times at Pitchfork alone, and he gets bigger and better every time. Far from the sex-obsessed weirdo who had just released XXX a year prior in 2012 (ok, not that far), this year’s clean-cut Brown didn’t need much besides his usual DJ. Without much of a breath, he burned through favorites like “Side B (Dope Song)”, “Monopoly”, and “Growin’ Up” before playing off of last year’s landmark Atrocity Exhibition. The four-punch of “Ain’t It Funny”, “Really Doe” (which he impressively delivered considering the best part of that song is Earl Sweatshirt’s verse), “When It Rain”, and “Pneumonia” showed that every time the workman comes to Pitchfork, he has a new batch to add to his growing list of classics.
THE POLITICAL
Madame Gandhi
Four years ago, Madame Gandhi found herself on a Pitchfork stage drumming for M.I.A. Four years later, she opened up Pitchfork on the same stage, this time her own show. She still did plenty of drumming--as did many of her dancers, all clad in yellow hazmat-looking suits--but mostly rapped and ready feminist literature. Too easy? Maybe, but the energy she brought to even a capella performances of her songs attracted crowd members looking to dance and feel empowered.
Priests
"You want something to move away for / A reason to colonize,” belted Priests singer Katie Alice Greer. Her stage presence and siren of a voice may have distracted a festival crowd from how subversive her lyrics are, especially on catchy songs like “JJ” and post-punk stompers like “Nothing Feels Natural”. Priests aren’t a perfect live band, either; the guitars on “JJ” were a bit out of tune, bassist Taylor Multiz’s mic was turned down too far on “Suck”, and “Nicki” was messy. But what’s important is that the same band who released Nothing Feels Natural was on display. (Drummer Daniele Daniele admirably performing the spoken word of “No Big Bang” was certainly a highlight). Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s nobody like Priests.
THE DISAPPOINTING
Dirty Projectors
Dirty Projectors played Pitchfork in 2012 at the top of their game, Amber Coffman and company’s harmonies the clear highlight, Dave Longstreth’s melodies and craftsmanship translating to the stage. This time around, even with the help of former Battles member Tyondai Braxton, it was painful. “Impregnable Question” missed Coffman. Longstreth’s singing on “Keep Your Name” was as out of tune as Brian Wilson was last year. “Little Bubble” failed to captivate anybody. “Up In Hudson”, the most in-tune, still ended up boring me to the point that I wanted to wait for Arca more than watch Longstreth continue to fall apart in front of an audience.
George Clinton
I could tell that George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic were amazing, great players, funk masters, and rappers. But this was just the classic case of bad sound and mic leveling issues making what could have been a highlight set exactly that: a big “what if.”
THE DAY-SAVING
Nicolas Jaar
At first minimal and noisy, which didn’t go well among the crowd dealing with the uncharacteristically dwindling July evening temperatures, Nicolas Jaar eventually led into a bass-heavy set more dance than anyone could have imagined. He occasionally sang-spoke into the mic but mostly stood at his laptops, his stage lights a blazing orange, his music drowning out American Football on the Blue Stage. For those wanting a party set from The Avalanches, who had to cancel their performance, this was the next best thing.
A Tribe Called Quest
I could have put A Tribe Called Quest’s set in many of these categories, but when they came on, all I could think about was how thankful I was to hear something truly energetic. The pinnacle of all no-bullshit hip-hop sets at Pitchfork, the now-trio launched right into “The Space Program” from last year’s excellent We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. From there, they played highlights from that album but mixed in all the classics: “Excursions”, “Bonita Applebum”, “Electric Relaxation”, “Check the Rhyme”, “Can I Kick It?”, and “Award Tour”. Q Tip not only rapped but sounded great--at a stage earlier in the day experiencing sound problems, his voice rang clearly to a crowd wanting to hear him preach. Best, when any Phife Dawg verse came up, they let it play sans interruption, the screens on each side of the stage focusing on the empty microphone.
LCD Soundsystem
If I had to withstand any of Dirty Projectors and then leave Arca early, then LCD better put on a show. They did. They headlined in 2010 around the release of This Is Happening, maybe the best show I’ve ever seen. This time around, they played virtually the same set they did last year at Lollapalooza plus the two released new songs, the building “Call the Police” and night-time ditty “American Dream”. They may be a bigger band now, and they’re certainly older, but in the time they’ve been gone, you grow to appreciate not just their live brilliance, but their ability to get even curmudgeons to dance. Murphy may still be snotty; thankfully, he can still write great songs.
THE EARNEST
Vagabon
Infinite Worlds, the debut album from Vagabon, is one of the strongest debuts of the year, so it was quite the move to open with one of its most powerful songs, the slow-building “Cold Apartment”. The rest of the set, though, showed off singer and guitarist Laetitia Tamko’s finger picking and vocals. Her voice in particular was beautiful when isolated among minimal instrumentation, though at times when she tried to rise above louder songs she was out of tune. Even if not picture perfect, Tamko was not only happy to be there but left it all out on stage, performing album highlights like “Cleaning House” and “The Embers”.
The crowd watching Vagabon very intently
Hiss Golden Messenger
Hiss Golden Messenger’s brand of country rock may have fallen on deaf ears at a festival very slowly embracing genres previously maligned by the bleeding edge hip. But that’s not the fault of the band. Running through tracks from Haw, Lateness of Dancers, Heart Like a Levee, and an upcoming album, they may not have won any new fans but confirmed for the faithful why they belonged, their pleasant and easy going instrumentation and lead singer M.C. Taylor’s existential laments making for a reflective set. Their final song, a new one called “When the Wall Comes Down”, is about exactly what you think it’s about (wait six more months for an overabundance of released “wall”-related recordings), but it was none the less powerful and a statement of togetherness.
THE THEATRICAL
Kilo Kish
The set from frequent Vince Staples collaborator Kilo Kish started out with her sitting on a chair reading a copy of The New Yorker, pretending not to notice the audience. You can guess where it went from there. While her voice always sounded good, her interpretive dancing, props, and forced falls to the stage made me want to roll my eyes more than clap. With only a DJ to back her up with tracks--a strange mix of R&B, hip hop, and jazz beats--it made for one of the more disappointing fests of the festival.
PJ Harvey
The last two albums from PJ Harvey--2011′s instant classic Let England Shake and 2016′s mediocre The Hope Six Demolition Project--are both concept albums. When the first nine songs you play are from those albums, and in mixed order, it comes across like a Decemberists set on steroids. Entering with a marching band (her band consisted of both longtime collaborator John Parish and the very active ex-Bad Seed Mick Harvey) and a sax in her hand, Harvey came across as equally witchy and goofy. The jazzy “Let England Shake” went along with the black and white video of the performance, but it wasn’t until she performed three 90s favorites that the crowd went wild--“50ft Queenie”, “Down By The Water”, and “To Bring You My Love”. For how good those three sounded, the set was worth it.
