Jules Dassin
Prison is a natural setting for film. In screenwriting, you’re often looking for shorthand. What’s the quickest and most natural way to tell the audience something? People behind bars provide immediate conflict and an immediate goal. No exposition needed.
Tumblr media
Prison, however, hands you a different problem. How sympathetic can you make a character who did something bad enough to put them here? “Brute Force” solves for this through flashbacks. Joe Collins (Burt Lancaster) leads a group of prisoners in cell R17. We see each character, the ensuing crime, and its mitigating circumstances. Very sympathetic and perhaps very unlikely. In fact, these aren’t criminals but war heros, lifesavers, anti-mob crusaders, cuckolded husbands, lovers.
Tumblr media
For “Star Trek” fans, one of the prisoners in cell R17 is Spencer (John Hoyt). His long resume includes playing Dr. Phil Boyce, the chief medical officer on the Enterprise for the pilot episode, “The Cage.” A wise, older doctor who would eventually morph into Leonard McCoy.
Tumblr media
To make the characters in a prison film more sympathetic, it also helps to make the bad guy really loathsome. Captain Munsey (Hume Cronyn) is sadistic and manipulative. A little man with fussy habits. Perhaps a product of a corrupt, cruel system. But, his cruelty is contained, even checked. Prison may be a microcosm for society, but Munsey isn’t a fascist leader. He’s more of a cog in an institutional machine.
Munsey can also be read as a queer-coded. His authority over the men is intimate. This fits a fairly common shorthand of the time that equated queerness with villainy.
Tumblr media
It takes an alcoholic, washed-up, wise doctor (Art Smith) to explain to Munsey what kind of shit he really is. Indeed, to let us know what kind of shitty system incarceration is. The system’s necessity needs no explaining, no exposition, no backstory. The only thing worse than the prison system is no prison system.
Tumblr media
Kind of reminds you of Democracy:

Thompson’s WO Walk Helps Dodgers Win Wild One.
Twins 8 Dodgers 9 W-Bickford (1-1) L-Lopez (1-1)
The Dodgers have found their stride after a month of .500 baseball. The team has been reeling off wins at a massive rate and another good game enused as the Twins came to town tonight. Freddie Freeman ignited a first inning rally with a single to right. Will Smith followed and belted a Pablo Lopez fastball out to right-center for a two-run homer. Max Muncy took Lopez deep and the Dodgers had a three-run lead after an inning of play. The Twins got a run back in the second as Jorge Polanco reached on an infield single. Kyle Farmer singled him home and the Twins were within a pair. The Dodgers got that run back and more in the third with a Will Smith one-out single. Max Muncy drilled a Pablo Lopez change-up out to left for a two-run shot and Los Angeles had a 5-1 lead. Jorge Polanco inched the Twins closer with a solo homer off Noah Syndergaard in the fourth. The bats calmed down in the middle innings until Christian Vazquez lined a single to right in the seventh. Donovan Solano walked and Alex Kirilloff singled home a run. The Dodgers got that run back with a Freddie Freeman run-scoring single. The Dodgers took a three-run lead in the eighth inning and it did not hold up. Byron Buxton led-off with a single and Jorge Polanco doubled. Trevor Larnach belted a Yency Almonte fastball out to right for a three-run homer that tied the game at six. Miguel Vargas answered with a two-out double in the eighth. David Peralta doubled him home to put the Dodgers up 7-6. The Twins continued to be pests as Carlos Correa walked with one-out in the ninth. Byron Buxton doubled him home to even the game at seven. Jhoan Duran had a 1-2-3 ninth and we needed extra innings tonight. The Twins quickly loaded the bases against Phil Bickford in the tenth. Christian Vazquez drew a bases loaded walk and Bickford found his form by retiring three straight men. JD Martinez countered with an RBI single in the tenth and we needed another inning. Neither side scored in the eleventh and Phil Bickford continued to put up zeroes. The Dodgers loaded up the bases with two outs in the twelfth. Trayce Thompson drew a walk to walk-off the Twins tonight in Los Angeles.
-Final Thoughts- Pablo Lopez wasn’t very sharp tonight. He lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Brock Stewart got four outs, Emilio Pagan gave up a run in the seventh, and Griffin Jax allowed another run in the eighth. Jhoan Duran threw two solid innings and gave up the ghost run. Jorge Lopez was pretty good, but took the loss with the bases loaded walk. Jorge Polanco and Christian Vazquez led the team with three hits on the night. Byron Buxton added two hits tonight. The Twins hit 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left fifteen men on base. Tomorrow, Bailey Ober faces Clayton Kershaw in Game 2.

Like Phil Bickford, for example.
That thing pitchers do where they throw a pitch so hard they almost lose their balance? Am I the only one who finds that adorable?
