i found this little jumper wild in my house awhile ago and have been trying desperately to keep it alive ever since because it was too cold to let it go. the great news is that it is now thriving in captivity and has even molted for me! i am taking name suggestions btw.

Finished my second jumping spider enclosure, and listed it on my Etsy today! I’m super happy at how it turned out and I’m so excited to start the next one!!

So, the latest updates about this incredibly silly spider:

He's made two napping hammocks, despite there being a pre-built nest. Honestly I'm still not convinced that he understands that he can go inside it, but he has been on top of it! Very clever!

Problem being -

He's managed to make his first hammock crammed into the corner above the pre-built. Pepper, why

As for his second hammock - and I wish I was making this up because As If his first location choice wasn't silly enough

He's made himself a tightrope, no net. All those tracks I thought he was making with his belly? He was measuring the distance of the front of the enclosure and concluded, yes - a horizontal hammock across the top-front was the Perfect Place to sleep. This is his preferred place to go to bed at night! Pepper! Why!!

Anyhow, then he went into his molt-hammock for a week and scared-and-disgruntled me (out of concern), so here's his buff-skinny new look!

I also don't know why he's contorting himself like that lol, he's fine and uninjured, he just chose to pose weird pft, silly boy <3 Look at his sternum! Blurry that it is, he's Wide now. You can also see how round his pedipalps are at the ends! Pepper boy confirmed!

I gave him a somewhat more sizeable worm this time since he was sure to be Hongry - I mean, just look at his abdomen! He was Very interested in this mealworm which was a big relief to me since he almost completely ignored the last one - even while this one was trying to get away, he was just patiently waiting for a chance to dip his fangs back in, no rush or fluster (apart from being spooked upon entry to the enclosure lol)

Pepper scared the shit out of me by hiding in his molt-hammock for A Literal Week and I thought for sure he’d moltstalled but no he was just in there getting swole

can you do the phiddipus johnsoni, the phiddipus audax, the tarantula hawk wasp, and/or the pacific red velvet ant (/red velvet ants in general)? wasn't sure what stuff you've done yet these are just some of my current fave bugs other than bees

I can do all of those! I'll get the others cued up, but here's a phidippus johnsoni poll. I absolutely adore parasitoid wasps! Bee requests are absolutely welcome, I love seeing different types of bees get some love! And thank you, it means a lot!

New type of spider scare unlocked: the Phiddipus audax who lives in the kitchen peaked out of the spout of the electric kettle just as I was going to set it to boil. Baby get OUT of there.

Currently reading: children of ruin by adrian tchaikovsky!!!!!!!!! rereading the series bc i got children of memory two christmases ago and i'm FINALLY getting around to reading that for the first time. but first i had to reread the first two books to refresh my memory. my favorite sci fi series for real everyone should read it!!!!!! i've recommended it to so many people. i won't spoil too much but the premise is an uplift experiment goes wrong, and the subjects (monkeys) perish while the vector for uplift (a "virus") makes it to the terraformed planet's surface; it is already seeded with life, set up for the monkeys' success. the virus finds itself compatible with something very.... non-monkeyish.... >:)!!!!!! (edited to add the FIRST book is called children of time lol start there)

Last thing I googled: phidippus audax i'm trying to sort out and find the appropriate references for its synonyms!!! salticus variegatus and attus audax and phiddipus variegatus grrrr soooo many names for one little guy!! and some of my sources are in german which doesn't help me, englishpilled monolingualcel. this is my first project in systematics ok be nice 🥺
