Me when I am reading another unrelated book and I'm hit by unexpected snowbaird:

Okay, maybe in the first book Phèdre’s coloring is described as brown eyes with a red mote; ivory skin; hair of sable black. Maybe that’s set up right away so there’s no question. Uh-huh.

But when I picture Phèdre, her coloring is precisely like Noémie Merlant in Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Hair is a dark, rich brown with red tones. Not a flat black, somehow that just doesn’t suit Phèdre. Furthermore she usually wears red, in my mind’s eye.

And by the way, THAT scene with the mirror… anyone else imagining Melisande drawing Phèdre in that pose, or is it just me?

Truly, I love the absurdity of the Kushiel’s books. Yes, sacred whore- Your divine destiny is to be a synesthesically true masochist and have as much kinky sex as possible. Yea, you gotta. To save the world. Your one true love is going to be a celebrate warrior priest. Trust and believe, this makes sense.

I can't believe it to announce the Kushiel project what is going to happen soon. I can't announce very much. Because the impact of the Kushielverse and of the other sources is quite unknown yet.

But here's a few pictures about Phedre's character design. More informations will coming soon.

A scene that will always stay with me from Kushiel's Dart is when Phedre sees Melisande from across the way, looking all beautiful and mysterious in her black and gold house colours, buying horses at the caravan, and she inspires so much fear in Phedre on a cosmic level, that Phedre's entire world view narrows down to her presence.

The relationship between Ysandre and Phedre is so interesting to me. Ysandre and Phedre clearly care about and respect each other a lot, but it’s not an 100% equal relationship. I mean, I think Ysandre clearly wants it to be, but because she’s the queen Phedre always shows deference to her even during their less formal meetings.

At first I was surprised at how close they became so soon after they first met, but then I realised that Ysandre had never had a female friend her own age before (I think the only woman she was close to was Roxanne de Mereliot, who was much older and acting as an advisor). So of course she would jump at the opportunity to befriend Phedre. It also probably helped that Phedre was Anafiel Delaunay’s pupil/adoptive daughter, which made her and Ysandre almost like family in a sense because Delaunay had been Rolande’s lover.

I'm on book 3 of kushiel's legacy, the end of phedres trilogy and the series has such a jrpg progression of plot.

Book 1: I must warn the queen that there's an invading army and traitors in our midst

Book 2: I must warn the queen that there's a conspiracy to assassinate her

Book 3: I must learn the name of God to free a fallen angel from the depths of the sea

Lest anyone should suppose that I am a cuckoo’s child, got on the wrong side of the blanket by lusty peasant stock and sold into indenture in a shortfallen season, I may say that I am House-born and reared in the Night Court proper, for all the good it did me. It is hard for me to resent my parents, although I envy them their naïvete. No one even told them, when I was born, that they gifted me with an ill-luck name. Phèdre, they called me, neither one knowing that it is a Hellene name, and cursed. When I was born, I daresay they still had reason for hope. My eyes, scarce open, were yet of indeterminate color, and the appearance of a newborn babe is a fluid thing, changing from week to week. Blonde wisps may give way to curls of jet, the pallor of birth deepen to a richness like amber, and so on. But when my series of amniotic sea-changes were done, the thing was obvious. I was flawed.

Facts, all.

Put off reading Kushiel's Legacy thinking it would be vaguely racist harem-fantasy BDSM smut in high fantasy dressing. Instead I got feminist George R. R. Martin if he was less racist and skeezy.

You need to take notes to follow all the names and I can barely keep up with who's doing what and the author has never heard of cutting to the goddamn chase, but good God you get so invested in the characters within a hundred pages that it sends you reeling when they die. I'm only at 200 out of 500 pages but I'm so fucking gutted that I stopped reading to skim the rest of all three books to see whether any of my other favourites were going to die and who I should be braced for dying because good fucking god. I'm even heartbroken about characters that died before the book!

It really sneaks up on you because this book is so dense and crammed with so much detail that you don't realize you've begun to really love the characters. The fuckton of foreshadowing probably didn't register because they're front and center like main characters would be, so you're not prepared for them to die in the middle. And Phedre lives such a happy, sheltered life that it's a genuine shock when it all gets blown up.

I want them back. I like Joscelin, but he isn't them. Jacqueline Carey how could you. 😭😭😭😭😭

Oh btw, this series is also gay as shit. Heterosexuality doesn't seem to exist and it's so unremarkable it didn't even occur to me that this is a full-on LGBT series. It's not like in fanfic, when even in stories where queerness is universal and unremarked in-universe there might as well be a giant fuck you rainbow flag over it all. In Kushiel's Universe it's just so matter-of-fact that you realize this could actually have been what society was like in the past when the Church wasn't all up in everybody's business. Sure, in this universe there's a hippie Jesus that followed regular Jesus who was all flower power and free love and founded alternate universe France, so that nobody has any sexual hang ups, homo or otherwise (much like regular medieval France Ig), but even if there were, everybody's either too rich to give a shit or too poor to care (also like regular medieval France). It feels historically accurate somehow. Idk. But this book came out in 2001. Eat that, GRRM, with your two male gays and off-screen lesbians.

Edit: Just checked the AO3 tag and. Sigh. You know a book isn't trashy when it only has 350 works on AO3. Fanfic runs on trash and guilty pleasure, not sensitive and quality story-telling.
