It is my privilege to attend.” He neither looked nor sounded as though he meant it; I saw the line of his jaw harden as he closed his mouth on the words. It was a beautiful mouth. Indeed, there was very little about Joscelin Verreuil that was not beautiful. He had the old-fashioned, noble features of a provincial lord and the somber, ash-grey garb of a Cassiline Brother adorned a tall, well-proportioned form, like the statues of the old Hellene athletes. His eyes were a clear blue, the color of a summer sky, and his hair, caught back in a club at the nape of his neck, was the color of a wheat field at harvest time. At this moment, his blue eyes considered me with scarce-concealed dislike.

I have been looking forward to doing concepts for Joscelin since I started this book! His descriptions have been very helpful for designing his equipment as he's more attentive to such things than Phedre was in "Kushiel's Dart", which makes sense.

My exploration of "Cassiel's Servant" continues with concept sketches for Joscelin. He'll no doubt be making an appearance in the fan cover I'm planning to create for this novel, so it was time to sort out his look!

I'm still torn on the design I came up with for Joscelin's sword blade and whether I should keep it simple or leave it as-is. Tell me your thoughts in the comments, book fans!

Ok look I'll make an AO3 account eventually but I need to put this somewhere, happy full moon, enjoy the initial and perhaps only draft of the uber-soft/sweet end of that Joscelin/Phedre post-vigil fic I may eventually write:

He looked down, eyes sparkling and cheeks flushed - delicate with moonlight and glowing with love. "Please," he whispered, drawing a hand through her curls, cradling her in a practiced hold.

A push, and the world fell into nothingness except for the warm press of Joscelin's weight and the petaled embrace of the bed. Phedre felt him smile, absurd and glorious and so in love, his sun-silk hair bunched beneath her fingers. He moved upwards and their hair caught, pulling them tight, and they both laughed. Unguarded and wild, Joscelin's grip on her shifted as he moved his weight towards his knees.

"A graceful pin, Messire Cassiline," she smirked, deftly spilling her hair free to cascade over the pillows, "I hope the challenge remains as enticing-"

She cut off at a soft smack - then again, harder - sensations rushing as Joscelin stilled his hand to gentleness. He had gripped a rose's stem, the bloom resting its red blush against her cheek. A question lingered at the crimson edge of its petals, like the afterimage of a star.

A love, bright and burning, shone from his eyes.

The feel of it dragging across her skin left her speechless, velvet edges trailing with effortless surety. Her pulse beat, throbbing at the tip of her tongue, lips parting as utter surrender overtook her. Joscelin's smile quickened into a grin, his tireless reserve of patience promising so, so many things. Her breath gasped from her chest as she nodded, "Yes, please, yes -"

The faintest clatter of burnished wings beat, somewhere beyond her sight, finding her momentarily more graceless and desperate than any patron's efforts could ever have wrought.

Joscelin was ready.

Her sharp and shining star, her Perfect Companion, the one who knew her to the core and ever still sought so joyously to know her more, slid his hands tight enough to bruise against the arc of her hips and shoved -

And dawn bloomed onwards across the sky, bright beams of silver-shot pink-gold enfolding the land of Terre d'Ange, and the province of Siovale, and through the rippled glass windows of Montrève. And the flowers of the Longest Night bloomed headlessly as the snow breathed in the warmth, and the dreams of all turned towards the return of spring. And in their bedroom, the chosen pair of the many gods quietly slept, suffused with peace, and grace, and endless love.

Okay. This is why I love Tumblr. Because I can escape to it in all hell crap and gush into the void.

I'm reading Kushiel's Chosen and miss the pinprick of the salt air of the sea on my tongue, the one that comes with my family.

And I'm obsessed by the differences in the covers

So this is the one I have, the US cover. Phedre's marque on full display, red gloves and gown, turning her face away from Casilline garb, head veiled and a rose cast aside.

Now this, is the French cover. Dressed in stockings and a red negligee, holding a fan carelessly, unearthly beauty turned towards us against a backdrop of the city.

And this, the Japanese cover. Imprisoned, in grey, the flash of a seagull flying past, looking out with a wry abeyance.

I like the name Cacielle, pronounced like the angel's name, Cassiel, but Spelled as a french name and with C instead of S. That way, our ciel has the right to use Ciel as his own name.

That’s an interesting idea, though I guess it would be Caçiel for a boy and Caçielle for a girl, right?

Also, Cassiel is still spelled that way in Kushiel’s Legacy, and the D’Angelines are essentially French people who had mixed (ages ago) with Elua and the (fallen) angels who follow him. Cassiel is one of them, but he is too devoted to Elua to mix with the humans. So, none of the D’Angelines are blood descendants of Cassiel. Instead, some boys are sent to special training to follow his path of chastity/abstinence and defense services; they are called the Cassiline Brotherhood. Warrior priests, basically.

Why not submit your idea to @ociel-namesuggestions ? It accepts terrible name suggestions and “legit” suggestions. This could easily be submitted as “legit”....
