Conceptual series -- Disposable Camera
--
What if, during their first patrol together, Ellie and Dina found a disposable camera in a drawer at the radio station?
For those of you who’ve never experienced the joy of the disposable film camera, they are made of flimsy plastic and contain the cheapest consumer-grade film. They’re designed to take a single type of exposure, with a set shutter speed, aperture and focus, and the best shooting conditions are bright daylight.
Outside of the ideal shooting conditions, you need to activate the flash to yield a usable picture. Red eye is inevitable. The flash is also set to fire at a specific power, so standing either too close or too far from your subject means they’ll either be too bright or too dark.
It’s very difficult to get perfect conditions for every shot, so when you take the film for processing (to Weston’s Pharmacy, of course), the processing machine automatically tries to compensate for pictures that are too dark or too bright. The result is often an extremely crushed dynamic range, and a lot of grain. They look crappy, but that’s part of the fun.
After 25 years in a desk drawer, I like to think that not only would the film have degraded quite a bit, but the housing would have lost some integrity and sprung a leak. This camera has a very slight crack in the housing, which leaks light when the camera is taken out into the daylight.
Typically, there are 24 exposures in one of these cameras, so I have included all 24 pictures that Ellie and Dina took together, including the duds. Some of you may point out that disposable cameras didn’t produce a date stamp in the bottom corner — this is true, however I think it adds to the effect I was going for, and also since we know the canonic date that this patrol happened, I thought it would be a cool detail to include it.

baizhu knows he isn’t the most favored.
from the first moment the traveller set foot in his office, he knew. he wasn’t met with anything special, no big flair from his god when you first saw him. it was to be expected, with how much time he spent praying—could gods have regulars?
it was simple. a quick ‘oh, the snake talks?’ thrown his way, a comment or two about his choice of outfit or the jade pendant hanging off his vision, and that was that. mostly, you seemed preoccupied with qiqi and the funeral parlor’s consultant, something to be expected. he was a quick stop on your journey, a note in the margins about the doctor you met at the pharmacy. it made sense, of course, that you’d be occupied with the death of rex lapis during the failed rite of descension, and the return of osial and beisht surely took priority over him. he offered little, only a dialogue or two actually shared between him and the traveller when you were present. he’d gathered as much of his energy, saved it for your arrival to make a good impression, so… it made sense you’d fret over qiqi, constantly forgetful as she was.
it made sense. he’d… made his peace. he had more to worry about, surely, what with orders to fulfill and his own condition to manage. maybe not more important—never, not maybe, what was he thinking?—but certainly more.
when your attention on qiqi flared, spurred by some unknown whim, he delighted a bit in being close to her, even if your thoughts on him weren’t entirely positive.
it was fair. you liked qiqi, and were concerned. it made sense you didn’t know every detail of teyvat, and since he’s never had the chance to come to you and spell out his story directly, it made sense you’d make some assumptions.
“i guess that makes sense, but still… qiqi deserves better.”
she probably did, in truth, but hearing it from you…
he’s had his vision for years by this point. he’s hd it for as long as he’d had changsheng, to be exact, and she was always able to remind him of exactly how long that had been.
“ssseven yearsss, four monthsss, thirteen daysss, and counting…”
“ah… thank you, changsheng.”
he knew he wasn’t special. out of the thousands of vision wielders across teyvat, only a handful have started having their constellations appear in the sky. just under a hundred, by his approximation, but he tried not to count. if he sought out the proper numbers, tried to pin down a percentage of those with a vision that had a chance to hold their god’s attention, then he’d start trying to find patterns. he was a doctor, patterns and rhythms were his literal job, but he knew that wouldn’t end well.
(a librarian, an alchemist, a lawyer: did you perhaps favor more studious types? a bartender, an exorcist, a detective: or those with a drive in their lives? a nobody, a traveller, a wandering samurai: or those seeking one out for themselves?)
there wasn’t a pattern. it was random. and part of him hated it.
baizhu had had his vision for seven years, eight months, and thirteen (was it fourteen? the sky was growing dark) days, and had never once seen his stars in the sky.
he had one. he had a constellation, something he knew was rare among vision wielders, but it didn’t guarantee him a spot in the sky any time soon. kirara had hers long before she had her chance in the heavens—they’d spoken about that, both hesitant to show the other their divine gift, but willing to speak of its existence.
and now kirara’s turn had passed. though her vision didn’t shine any brighter, he could see the pride in her smile when she dropped off another delivery at the pharmacy. sign here, check these, make sure this is what you ordered, goodbye have a good day, pretend like yours doesn’t weigh more after seeing hers.
it wasn’t as if he was unremarkable. a perfectly healthy man who had thrown himself into illness to find the cure for all of them? surely that was interesting, wasn’t it? but it wasn’t his time, he was being impatient, slipping back to the same mindset he condemned his patients for.
“patience. medicine doesn’t work in an instant, and you’ll need to be taking this for the next week at minimum.”
“but it’s so bitter!”
“then tell me, what tastes worse: bile, or this pill? if you want to stop being sick, you need to take it.”
patience.
qiqi was blessed with a place in the stars near instantly after she’d gotten her vision, but she was not the norm. perhaps his expectations were weighted, then? or maybe you disliked his work entirely? he didn’t like entertaining what ifs, but when various aches kept him up, there was little else he could do while he waited for his medication to take effect. patience, he tried to remind himself, counting his breaths. be patient. wait, be calm, don’t agitate yourself. count in, count out, are your breaths getting shorter? just stay calm, be patient…
the first time he saw you, he knew you were coming. he’d saved as much energy as he could, doing his best to make a good impression. but now, with changsheng nudging him awake urgently, pushing him into his shoes and putting his glasses on for him, the first thing he’d expected was the millelith, maybe, or perhaps the ministry of civil affairs. maybe he was needed urgently, maybe something had happened to qiqi, maybe he was late for his medication and he’d get terrible headaches if he wasn’t quick- oh, but then why would she bother to coil around his shoulders?
and yet, out of all those possibilities, none were correct.
“hey! who’s talking about me behind my back?”
“changsheng, qiqi meant that as a compliment. there’s no need to be upset.”
it had been so long since he’d felt your light, far longer since he’d been properly healthy. he’d forgotten how it felt to walk without the dull ache in his joints, and yet here he was. standing by gui and a familiar looking child, speaking with your traveller. it was easy to say words he didn’t choose, his throat not getting dry despite the lack of his morning tea.
the quest was long, and by the end he should have been exhausted. between taking on jialiang’s sickness to turning him into a zombie, he should have been out of commission for the next few days. as it was he had a nasty cough, his breath coming shorter than typical… but that was it. he took his regular medication at the dinner with your traveller, the linger of your aura on them still seeming to dull his pains. how curious, that you could cure ailments even he couldn’t name anymore…
“baizhu, are you alright?” idly, he wondered if the traveller noticed the change in their voice when they were speaking for you. it always sounded a bit lighter, a bit of your emotions bleeding through… a pity he’d never know why. “today must have been taxing for you…”
all eyes were on him now, even qiqi’s. “i’m doing fine,” he said simply, taking another sip of his tea. “better than normal, if anything, which i have to owe to our guest.”
paimon still seemed nervous. “but what about when we leave? what if everything hits you all at once? normally you stay at the pharmacy, and using your power so much…”
a fair assessment. while he was no stranger to combat, to be thrown in the middle of a pack of such vicious hilichurls was a shock. still, he had made it through—even if, privately, he doubted it would have been so clean without you there. “i will be fine. even if my condition declines, i am well equipped to handle flare ups.”
it seemed the whole group was hesitant to let him go. changsheng insisted he stay up until three hours had past since the traveller left, when his limbs again felt heavy and his head began to hurt. something odd was stirring in his chest, and he was eager to get to bed before it sparked into anything more. it was reasonable, he knew, but there were only so many prescriptions to prepare before he had nothing left to do. gui had long since went to bed, leaving just him in the lobby of the pharmacy, quietly double checking his stock of herbs.
eventually, he stood from his seat, returning the sweet flowers to their proper place. he held up an hand to let changsheng climb up his arm, closing up the pharmacy. she curled around his shoulders twice, a familiar weight. the night was cool, a slight breeze bumping the chain of his glasses against his cheek. it had been a long few days, and he was happy that everything was settled. he’d done all he could for jialiang, and he and his family hopefully wouldn’t be coming back for quite some time. back to routine…
“…baizhu?”
he checked the lock with a quick tug, “yes? what is it?”
“the ssstarsss… they’re due, aren’t they?”
ah. the cycles of constellations, switching through the sky. if he thought about it.. yes, they were, weren’t they?
“by my memory, they are. why?”
her head was turned, looking off to the part of the sky not obscured by the roof of the pharmacy.
“…changsheng-“
“look.”
“it’s late.” his heart began to pick up, false hopes being raised. patience, he chided himself, but what follower did not wish for acknowledgment from their god? “we should go to sleep before we fall too far out of schedule.”
“baizhu! i know you have better sssenses than that.”
perhaps he did. his vision burned where it was clipped to his side, invisible vines creeping up toward his heart. “don’t be too hasty,” he said quietly, the words tasting as bitter as his pills.
don’t be too hasty. you could still be wrong. don’t get your hopes up. be patient.
one hand went to his hip, undoing the clasp of his vision, the other settling on the railing. a few clouds dotted the sky, but he lifted his vision anyway, searching for any stars tinted green.
everything happened at once. the terrace was replaced with an ocean of skies, the slight mumble of “i do have a guaranteed…” getting lost in the whirlwind around him. he was weightless, trapped in by an invisible box, only dimly aware of the fact that his pain had once again disappeared. he was floating, dressed in the attire he normally saved for formal events—dressed in what he’d put on when you’d first arrived—with no sight of the pharmacy below him. it was just him and changsheng, him and changsheng and the bright light that came from everywhere, lifting him from his unseen prison.
a laugh, a smile, a rush of power flooding through him, and when he next set foot in front of the pharmacy, he did so with a new gleam to his vision. he could hear a door open behind him—qiqi, if he had to guess, as why wouldn’t she be drawn to the power the adepti could only hope to imitate?—but couldn’t turn, breathless.
“welcome home, doc.. it’s good to see you.”
it had taken seven years, four months, and 25 days, but he was here. and it was more than he could have ever asked for.

pairing: Simon "Ghost" Riley x fem!reader words: 3k tags: death. blood. zombies of course. reader menstruates. single dad ghost. there will be sex but it isn't here yet. slow burn!!! enemies to lovers. summary: After losing your companions, you run into a skull-masked man and his daughter. They are your last hope for survival. a/n: this was longer but i decided to break it up sorry :p
The last glimpse of civilization you had was a chaotic one.
It was the first day of the outbreak.
Freshly infected running around. Bodies scattered in the streets like dead flies. Screaming. Paul grabbing your hand and tugging you towards the treeline. Your nephew shrieking in your sister’s arms. It’s funny how trauma likes to grab hold of the minute details. You can also recall seeing a bus pass by with an ad for some superhero movie. You had planned on seeing it. The bus crashed into a house and the ad was licked by flames.
Paul was always the one to make the trips to pharmacies and markets. He was the one who wielded a gun, not you. You were the one to stay behind, fortify the fence, and watch over the two broken members of your family.
Society's dust— that is what you leave Ghost’s territory for.
You know you need to.
Tumblr media
You wait for your period to end.
Freshly spilled blood is not a scent you want to carry. Greys are drawn to it like flies to rot. Something you learned the hard way once during a hunt with Paul. They were able to catch your scent from a further distance than usual because of it.
To your relief, Ghost lets you look at his map.
Of course, you can’t take it with you.
“Jus’ memorize it,” he grumbles under his breath.
So the evening before you venture out, you study the map of Northern England. Ghost brought out a whole stack of them from the room you’re certain is his. You notice a map of the European continent on top, briefly catching a glimpse of a black circle drawn in the middle somewhere, but he is quick to move it underneath the pile.
You focus on the one you need.
There is a black dot to indicate where their camp is amid the forest. Some 20 kilometers south is the closest city. Or village rather. Ribchester. Maybe that is a safer bet than going by yourself to a big city like Manchester. You may have a bow and knife and some strength, but you don't have a car or guns like he does. Or companions coming with you.
Blue helps you turn your pillowcase into a strapped bag with some scissors. You need something to carry what you find. Ghost isn't willing to let you leave with his backpack. Bitterly, you get it. It’s a useful item.
The next morning, you feel as prepared as you can be. You wake up earlier than usual, before Blue has the chance to poke inside your shed with Grim. You eat a big breakfast of two dried squirrels. You have a third one to take with you.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Blue picks at her breakfast as she sits beside you at the table. Her lips twist around thoughtfully.
You glance between her and Ghost. His stare is unreadable like usual. Dark, stoic, and hiding under lowered brows. You wonder what he thinks— if he would be secretly relieved if you don't make it back alive. Probably. He could get rid of you without Blue pointing the blame at him.
"Medicine is important. I need to find my own.”
We can’t risk sneaking anymore, you would say if he wasn’t right there. But by the way she slides her blue eyes to discreetly meet yours, you think she gets the hint.
"Just be careful, okay?" You nod. "And remember—" she lifts a finger, "—you have to shoot those fucks in the brain."
"I know. I've been practicing my aim a bit."
The smile you offer is only half-there. The truth is, you are risking your life with this. Part of you wonders how deeply she has processed that.
Despite her lips appearing more chewed-through than usual, they give a wary smile in return.
“Yeah, we could hear you hitting the trees. Right, Ghost?"
He hums low, but characteristically, doesn't have much to say about you.
But when you head for the cabin door after eating, his firm hand surprises you, gloved and skeletal. It wraps around your bicep and brings you to a halt before you can step outside. Heat spreads through his glove and the layers of your clothes. You turn around just as a metal object is silently offered to your chest. Ghost holds your stare before you look down at what he is giving you.
It's the revolver. The one they collected from that man.
The gun with only one cartridge.
"Thanks."
You bite your cheek to hide the dry tone, slipping the revolver into your coat pocket. Maybe it will come in handy. At least he now trusts you enough not to immediately point it at him or her.
Blue is the one to follow you out to the gate of their camp.
"I hope you find something good."
"Me, too."
"You know, Ghost and I only went on one trip that I can remember," she says as she unlocks the bolts for you.
"Yeah?"
"To get him more ammo from a military base," she explains with a wave of her hand. "It was pretty close, though. He says that we went on one other trip back to Manchester when things first happened, but he carried me on his back the whole time so I don't remember much except for all the loud sounds.”
This part she adds quietly: "Think I closed my eyes for most of it."
"I would have closed my eyes, too, Blue.”
Tumblr media
The next glimpse of civilization you get is a desolate one.
Again, you are on your own. Though, maybe you’ve been alone this whole time in a way.
It is that weird time between winter and spring when the air is crisp but the sun is bright. You hope to complete the trip in one day, which gives you about nine hours. You walk and walk, leaving Ghost's familiar territory behind until the trees become new to you again. You’ve never gone south before. You stop by a creek to drink some water along the way. By high noon, you exit the forest for the first time in five years.
You can see it. Overgrown shrubs and dry vines that crawl over cracked concrete. A road. A billboard arches over with a peeled ad for shaving cream, the woman’s face looking mangled. Your bow is poised as you follow the highway towards the village, recalling a time when you used to take the bus ride down this very route to visit your sister’s home. You liked watching the trees and rolling hills pass through the window as you tucked your ears under headphones.
It is so strange.
The air is quiet with abandonment.
Briefly, you ache for a world that once existed and the life you once lived. Car rides. Music whenever you wanted. Drunk outings on the weekends when you were supposed to be studying for nursing school. Hope for a family of your own someday.
But you have to ignore all that to stay focused on the present. Now, life is whittled down to basic needs and protecting yourself the best you can.
The village soon appears as stone buildings with unkempt wisteria scaling the sides. Abandoned cars haphazardly parked throughout the streets. You keep your guard up and your nose flared as you approach. There is a faint, awful scent that looms in the air, but it is not strong enough to cause concern. Not yet.
A pharmacy.
You need to find one.
If you want to make it back to their camp by nightfall, then you can only waste about an hour or two here. You could spend the night in a tree and trek the 20 kilometers tomorrow, but sleeping in a branch is even more unpleasant than your shed and it is risky. You were willing to do it when you had no other choice, but what if some unfriendly people find you this time? Perhaps even unfriendlier than the threat of Ghost's knife to your neck.
An hour is killed just searching for the pharmacy.
You roam the empty streets.
Finally, you catch sight of the faded sign and your heart leaps. But the excitement fades away when your nose and eyes detect the group of Greys just outside the building in an empty parking lot. Their pale eyes aren’t pointed at you yet, so you move behind a crumpled car for cover. If you had gotten any closer, they surely would've smelled your human flesh.
You take a deep breath. How many are there?
Carefully, you poke your head out just an inch to survey the threat. Six of those fucks. That is doable given the range.
The last time you ran into Greys, you had no choice but to run because of the bow Ghost stepped on. This time, you can kill them off with the bow carved by his hands.
You are quick with it. You stand and release arrow by arrow. Four of the six are headshots. You aren't perfect. The last two receive arrows through their shoulders, but this type of wound means nothing to a Grey. It is their brains that are infected with the virus, just like Blue said.
These two begin running towards you, now catching a whiff of your scent.
You climb on top of the car. Hitting a running target is far trickier. You go for the faster one first, using two more arrows before hitting the skull, grey chunks of brain splattering onto the concrete. The slower one just barely reaches the car before you finish it off, the closer distance sharpening this final hit.
The pharmacy is reachable now.
As you run over, you gather the used arrows. Precious ammo. You pull them out of their bodies with a twist and a putrid squelch.
When you push through the doors to the pharmacy, you almost choke. The shelves— they are empty. You breeze through every aisle, eyes and hands seeking anything that could be left, but there is nothing. You check the back. You check the shelves behind the counter.
Empty, empty, empty.
“Oh, fuck me,” you croak. Hot tears spill down your cheeks.
You half expected this.
But you’ve come all this way.
You need something.
There must be somewhere else you can look.
The cars maybe. Most people used to keep med kits somewhere inside. There is a slight chance that one could’ve been forgotten. It is worth a try.
You keep moving, not wanting to return with an empty bag. The white sun hangs high. The dry air turns your tear-stained cheeks sticky. You pick up rocks to begin breaking the windows of the abandoned cars, poking your arm inside to undo the locks, and rummaging through the glove compartments.
CDs, magazines, condom wrappers.
Nothing.
“Please, please.”
You make it down the street like this, checking every single one. Distracted, you shatter the glass of a white sedan without noticing the shadow laying in the backseat.
Fingers wrap around your wrist as you reach for the inner lock.
A maggot-filled mouth lurches for the flesh of your hand.
An arrow won't work here. With a cry, you use your free hand to grab the revolver from your pocket and shoot its head. The sound echoes. The single bullet burrows right between its eyes. The Grey writhes for a moment before going limp against the seat.
Panting, you have to pry the bony fingers off your wrist.
Again, you search the glove compartment. In this car where the stench is thick enough to sicken you, a med kit and a Twix bar fall into your hands.
“Fuck— thank you.”
You stash both into your homemade bag.
You could leave now, but you are itching for some antibiotics. The kit will help you clean wounds without Ghost's help, but it won’t save you if you develop an infection.
The next idea you have is to check a house.
By the look of the sky, you can fit in at least two quick searches. You run over to the next street and kick at the front door of the first one you see. Nothing but knocked-over furniture and torn wallpaper. The bathroom cabinet is empty.
The next one you fight inside is decorated with furniture that smells like faded perfume. The first room you check is a bedroom. In the center, a full set of bones lies on the bed, void of any meat after God knows how long its been there. You try not to look at it. On the floor lies a pile of clothes. You could use some more, still dressed in the ones Ghost found you in. You don't even look at them, just grab what you can fit in your bag and move on to the bathroom.
Here, beside a pair of molded dentures, you find two half-full bottles of pills.
Amoxicillin.
Paracetamol.
You cry some more.
It's not much, but it is enough for now.
Tumblr media
Your muscles are fatigued by the time you make it back.
You reek of sweat. It is a long walk. You run into a few more Greys but manage them. You eat the squirrel you brought.
Darkness covers the forest just when you spot the camp's fence in the distance. Relief. You actually did it. Some pride breathes into your tired lungs.
As you get closer, you make out two silhouettes leaving the gate. One is a girl who you tiredly smile at the sight of, and the other is a bulky tank.
You leap over the trench.
But when your boots land on the other side, the end of a rifle pokes your breastbone and prevents you from getting any closer.
Tumblr media
"Ghost."
You can't help but shout at him, eyes widening. He is pointing a gun at you? You were just beginning to think he could tolerate you enough to not threaten murder anymore. The memory of your first encounter resurfaces.
"It's just me! What the hell are you doing?"
Panic finds you once again. Your chest rises and falls under his gun’s touch. You glance at Blue, who tries to get near you, but he sticks out an arm to keep her away.
"Dad," Blue groans, "Do you really have to— ”
The tip of the rifle brushes up over your collarbone and toward your neck. Your nerves awaken under cold metal.
"Let me see." His voice is firm.
Oh. Bites. He wants to see if you have any bites.
"Okay, okay." You nod breathlessly.
Swallowing, you gather your braided hair in your hands as he clicks on a flashlight. You have not been offered string to tie them with so most of the hair has fallen out as always. You roll your neck to one side, and then to the other to show him the unmarked skin. But he is not satisfied yet.
He moves the rifle down to the hem of your shirt and uses it to lift up the fabric just beneath your breasts, revealing the skin of your stomach and ribs. You should feel exposed, standing here with your bare midriff under the light, but the two of them have already seen this much of you. You are more concerned about the fact that he could kill you if he actually suspects you could’ve been bitten.
The cold air invites a shiver. Your teeth clench as you stare at him. In the darkness, his eyes almost lean red.
He lowers your shirt.
"Roll 'em up for me,” he demands, now giving a nod to your trousers.
You bend over to roll up the pantlegs, all the way up to your knees so he can’t complain about it. All that is revealed are your unshaven legs and sweat-laced socks. You are sure they can smell them from where they stand.
"She doesn't have any stupid bites, Ghost, alright?"
Blue tugs at his arm with a huff. Finally, the rifle lowers. You straighten back up and exhale the short breath you were holding.
There is a silent moment where the three of you just stand there. An owl hoots. Ghost rubs at his masked jaw and looks you over some more, eyes flicking to the filled bag over your shoulder with a raised brow.
And then, something unexpected.
A small body whirls into yours and you almost stumble back in a step. Blue wraps her arms around your waist and excitedly breathes out, "I knew you'd make it back. Ghost said you wouldn't. I told him you would."
What?
It is a short-lived hug.
But still, the first one you have had in a long time.
After this tiring day, your eyes close with some more moisture. It is a strange feeling, her young embrace. Her palms spread flat against your back and she presses her forehead to your shoulder because she is tall enough to reach it. You are just about to hug her in return, move your arms around her shoulders out of instinct, but she is soon tugged away by a skeletal hand. Her blue eyes drift down to her boots. She looks a mix of irritated and embarrassed.
In a daze, you end up back in the warmth of the cabin.
Blue begs you to show her what you found. You dump the contents of your pillowcase onto the table. Her father’s shadow lurks behind you somewhere, always watching and taking up space, but for now, you ignore him.
You cannot recall a time when you were in this kind of mood. It is enough to surface the waters of your grief. Because now, your survival does not have to rely so much on Ghost's mercy or the risk of Blue’s sneaky hands. Food, a med kit, one type of antibiotic. It should all be enough to keep you alive - to take care of yourself - for at least however long you end up staying here.
"Shit balls." Blue rummages through the goods. "You did pretty good."
"Right? I can't believe it," you whisper numbly. You wipe your eyes.
She holds up the clothes first, starting with a large, floral blouse that looks like something an old lady would wear. Her head tips back with a giggle.
"This is way too big for you."
"I'll make it work," you say, shrugging, but almost manage a quiet laugh, too. You don't really give a fuck what the clothes look like. At least you can change finally into something else - something that didn’t belong to your dead companions.
Where you care about the medicine, Blue is far more intrigued by the candy bar she discovers. She holds it up, and inspects the wrapper with curiously wide eyes, shooting a glance at her dad.
"T-w-i-x," she sounds out with pinched brows. She looks back at you. "What's this?"
"It's like... chocolate," you tell her.
"Oh— no way. Could I try some?"
You don't really care about the Twix bar. You almost forgot about it since the moment you found it in the car. But before you can tell her she can just have it as a late birthday gift - because she has done so much for you - Ghost moves to take it from her hands.
He puts it back down on the table.
“What’s hers is hers, kid. That’s how it works here.“

Y/N had always cherished the quiet moments with Bucky, the nights spent in each other's arms, the way he made her feel safe and loved. It had been a whirlwind romance, starting with a chance meeting at a cozy little bookstore in Brooklyn and blossoming into something neither of them had anticipated. They had faced challenges, of course, but their bond only grew stronger.
One particular night stood out in Y/N's mind. It had been a night filled with passion, a night where they had let go of all their worries and simply existed in the moment. The memory of Bucky's touch, his whispered promises, and the way he had made her feel was something she held close to her heart.
A few weeks later, Y/N noticed she was feeling different. There was a persistent nausea in the mornings and an overwhelming sense of fatigue that she couldn't shake. She tried to ignore it at first, attributing it to stress or maybe a lingering cold. But as the days went by, the signs became harder to dismiss.
One sunny afternoon, she decided to take a pregnancy test, more out of a desire to rule out the possibility than anything else. She bought a test from the pharmacy on her way home, her heart pounding in her chest. Back in the safety of her apartment, she followed the instructions and then waited, staring at the small window on the test with bated breath.
When the result appeared, her heart skipped a beat. Two lines. Positive. She was pregnant.
A wave of emotions crashed over her – joy, fear, excitement, uncertainty. She sank onto the edge of the bathtub, clutching the test in her hand. Her mind raced with thoughts of the future, of Bucky, of how this new life would change everything.
Y/N knew she had to tell Bucky, but she wanted it to be special. He deserved a moment that matched the significance of the news. She spent the next few days planning, trying to come up with the perfect way to surprise him. Finally, she settled on an idea that felt just right.
On the evening she planned to tell him, Y/N set the stage carefully. She prepared a cozy dinner at her apartment, filled with all of Bucky's favorite dishes. She decorated the living room with soft, twinkling fairy lights and lit a few candles to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. In the center of the coffee table, she placed a small, neatly wrapped box.
Bucky arrived right on time, as always. He walked through the door with a smile, his eyes lighting up when he saw her. "Hey, doll," he greeted, pulling her into a hug. "Everything looks amazing."
Y/N returned his embrace, her heart fluttering with anticipation. "I wanted tonight to be special," she said, her voice soft but steady.
They enjoyed the meal together, chatting and laughing, the warmth between them palpable. Y/N found herself getting lost in the moment, savoring the time they spent together. But throughout the evening, her gaze kept drifting to the box on the table, her excitement building.
After dinner, they moved to the living room, settling onto the couch. Bucky noticed the box and raised an eyebrow. "What's this?" he asked, curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
Y/N took a deep breath, her nerves tingling. "It's for you," she said, handing him the box. "Go ahead, open it."
Bucky took the box, his fingers deftly unwrapping the ribbon. He lifted the lid and pulled out a small, handcrafted wooden figure. It was a soldier, meticulously carved with intricate detail. He turned it over in his hands, a puzzled expression on his face. Then, he noticed the small, folded piece of paper tucked underneath it. He opened the note, his eyes scanning the words.
"You're going to be a dad."
For a moment, Bucky was silent, his eyes wide as he processed the words. He looked up at Y/N, his expression a mixture of shock and wonder. "Y/N, are you...?"
She nodded, tears of joy brimming in her eyes. "Yes, Bucky. I'm pregnant."
A slow, radiant smile spread across Bucky's face. He reached out, pulling her into a tight embrace. "I can't believe it," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "We're going to have a baby."
They held each other for a long time, the reality of their new future sinking in. Bucky pulled back slightly, his eyes searching hers. "How do you feel about it?" he asked gently.
"I'm scared," Y/N admitted. "But I'm also incredibly happy. I know it's going to be a big change, but I can't think of anyone else I'd want to go through this with."
Bucky cupped her face in his hands, his touch tender. "We're in this together, Y/N. We'll figure it out, one step at a time."
In the weeks that followed, they navigated the ups and downs of pregnancy together. Bucky was by her side at every doctor's appointment, his protective nature coming to the forefront. He would talk to her belly, whispering sweet words to their growing baby, his excitement and love evident in every gesture.
They spent nights planning and dreaming about their future, imagining the kind of parents they wanted to be. Bucky would often wake up in the middle of the night, just to check on Y/N, his hand resting gently on her growing belly, a look of awe and contentment on his face.
One evening, as they sat together on the couch, Y/N felt a fluttering sensation in her abdomen. She gasped, grabbing Bucky's hand and placing it where she felt the movement. "I think the baby just kicked," she whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.
Bucky's eyes lit up, and he gently pressed his hand against her belly. A moment later, he felt it too – a tiny, almost imperceptible kick. He looked at Y/N, his expression filled with awe. "That's our little one," he said softly, his voice choked with emotion.
As the months passed, their excitement grew along with Y/N's belly. They prepared the nursery together, Bucky carefully assembling the crib and painting the walls a soothing shade of blue. They filled the room with soft toys, books, and little clothes, each item a testament to their love and anticipation.
One night, as they lay in bed, Y/N turned to Bucky, her hand resting on his chest. "I can't wait to see you with our baby," she said, her voice filled with tenderness. "You're going to be an amazing father."
Bucky smiled, his eyes shining with gratitude and love. "And you're going to be the best mother, Y/N. I can't wait to start this journey with you."
Finally, the day arrived. Y/N went into labor, and Bucky was there every step of the way, holding her hand and offering words of encouragement. It was a long and challenging process, but when their baby finally arrived, the room was filled with a sense of profound joy and relief.
Bucky held their newborn daughter in his arms, tears streaming down his face as he looked at her tiny, perfect features. He turned to Y/N, his heart overflowing with love. "She's beautiful," he whispered. "Just like her mother."
Y/N smiled, exhaustion and happiness mingling in her expression. "We did it, Bucky. We brought her into the world."
As they settled into their new life as parents, Bucky and Y/N found that their love only deepened. They faced sleepless nights and countless challenges, but they also experienced moments of pure, unadulterated joy. Their daughter grew, bringing laughter and light into their lives.
And through it all, Bucky and Y/N knew that they were stronger together. Their love had brought them this far, and it would continue to guide them as they embraced the beautiful, unpredictable journey of parenthood.
In those quiet moments, when the world seemed to stand still and they held their daughter close, they knew that they had found something truly extraordinary. A love that could withstand anything, a family that would endure, and a future filled with endless possibilities.

This is Ninazu Rashid or Dr. Rashid, my only ninjago oc besides Cyra. He is a doctor in Ignacia that befriended Kai and Nya and cares a lot about them.
Basically I wanted to make a kind and patient adult oc because Kai and Nya need one (badly) and there are barely any nice adults in the show (not including Ed and Edna, we respect them :>).
Details:
(Cw: mentions of homophobia and ped0philia)
Dr. Rashid is the doctor of a small clinic in Ignacia who also runs the pharmacy. He met the siblings when Kai got badly sick and they called him out for help. Even when Kai got better, Rashid couldn’t keep the situation they were living in off his mind, so he would usually go to check on Kai's health... and also take care of them a bit, in whatever little way he could.
Nya used to go by the clinic after school because Rashid would usually give her drinks and snacks (she loved the hot choco in winter) and he tried, with little success, to make Nya convince Kai to come so he could eat something too.
One time, Nya got sick and Kai went under the rain to his door to ask dr. Rashid for help; of course, he went with him and gave the necessary medicine to Nya. Since they couldn’t afford it, though, Kai asked to work at the pharmacy to help Rashid as compensation, and after a lot of insinsting, the doctor finally gave in and let him. But they ended up bonding during that time, and Rashid did defend Kai even when he started stealing, but he also made him understand that he should only do so when absolutely necessary.
However, as he's gay, when the conservative village found out a bunch of nasty rumors started to spread, most of them about his sexuality and his relationship with Kai and Nya (ped0philia). Rashid tried to endure the comments but it was starting to affect his job with people simply not going to the clinic because of it. So, sadly, he had to leave to Ninjago City, unintentionally leaving Kai and Nya with even more abandonment issues and not a single safe person in the village.
In the present he spent many years trying to be Kai and Nya's general doctor for whenever they get hurt in missions (even going out of his way to study more so he could help them), until finally he made it (I know nothing of how hospital works so this may be wrong). The siblings were confused and angry at him at first, until he explained the reasons why he left and they calmed down.
Dr. Rashid then proceeded to ask what he could do to make them feel better from then on, and actually listened to them and treated them like grown people (looking at you Ray and Maya :))). Kai and Nya then forgave him and are really good friends with him now.
More stuff:
He got married and is sad and frustrated that he couldn't invite the siblings to the wedding.
He is really respected in the hospital for being the only doctor who Kai and Nya listen to and how "docile" they are with him.
Kai and Nya sometimes visit him for dinner.
He is also very kind to the other ninja and understands how hard they work for Ninjago. He is specially kind to Lloyd for that and for being Kai and Nya's younger brother.

hello I come to you with some more nsfw Olli/Allu inspired by a couple of headcanons I've been playing with recently, yes it's smutty but because I don't really know how to write just smut, I had to throw a bit of pining and longing in there too, hope you don't mind 🤍
~
Aleksi has a headache and Olli comforts him (...in his own special way)
~~~
Olli loved the stable, soft hums by his ear. He loved the warmth that was pressed against his side, with a thigh resting on his hip bone and a hand clutching his waist. There was a nose tip nuzzling Olli's cheek, and Olli loved it too, especially when it would suddenly retreat with a quiet, sharp exhale but return a moment later, right back where it had been (where it belonged).
Love in fractions: that was all Olli could allow himself to feel. Of course he loved the whole too – the man dozing by his side on a hotel bed – but admitting that to himself was a whole different kind of scary Olli wasn't sure if he was ready to face yet. Right now, he'd rather focus on things like the tip of a nose or a squeeze of a hand or strands of dark hair falling on his closed eyelids and other tiny details that overwhelmed Olli only a little bit (instead of devastating him with the crushing realisation that he had fallen for someone he shouldn't).
(There were nights when they did crush him like that. Those nights he could hardly breathe.)
The atmosphere in their dark room was too tranquil to let Olli be swallowed into the pitch-blackness of his deepest fears, too soft and warm and nice with Aleksi's soft and warm body glued to his in the aftermath of the poor man's sudden post-breakfast headache. He had offered to go and fetch him something from the corner pharmacy, but only after they had already settled on the bed with Aleksi's head on Olli's pillow and Olli's fingers stroking Aleksi's temple, so even if Aleksi had asked him to, it would have taken everything from Olli to let go of the man once he had him in his arms.
He would have, though. If Aleksi had asked him to travel to the moon and back for some ibuprofen, he would have.
(Oh, god, he would have.)
"Feeling any better?" Olli asked when that shy nose tip booped his cheekbone again. Aleksi breathed in, then held his breath for a second and let it out in a low grunt (and Olli melted).
"Maybe. I don't know."
More soft grunts right into Olli's ear. The hand by his waist kneading his skin. The thigh on his hip sliding down, in between Olli's own.
Lips on his jawline.
"Mmmmmmh." The vibrations of Aleksi's murmur were enough to make Olli almost lose it. He was brave, though, as brave as to nudge his cheek against Aleksi's nose, which earned him another contented mmmmmmh and an even tighter grip on his waist. Aleksi was being brave as well; Olli could tell by the way he didn't flinch away anymore, and by how his lips still grazed Olli's jaw.
Let's be brave together, Olli said to Aleksi in his mind. Let me find your lips and open them with mine, and you'd grab me by my waist and turn me over and I'd let you, and you'd sneak your thigh in between my legs and let me rub against you and I'd let you rub against me and I'd make you feel so good.
"So are you ready to get up?" Olli's chest sank as he forced the words out of his mouth, but he feared for what would happen if he didn't: nothing, which was likely (although not any less heartbreaking), or something, which (depending on what the something was) he might be able to live with, because at least he had tried to stop it.
"No," Aleksi simply replied, then added (possibly half-asleep, with Olli's luck), "you smell too nice."
For a second, Olli forgot how to breathe.
"Oh?" He wasn't sure where he should place this confession-of-sorts in The Olli and Aleksi Scale of Secret Love Confessions. It felt as tender and comforting as the night they had shared together in that rental house in LA, when the others had gone out for Thanksgiving dinner and Aleksi had stayed in with Olli because Olli had been feeling too poorly and tired to even get out of bed; at the same time, those words seemed to hold almost as much suppressed affection as all the silent conversations they shared in the dark, especially as of late when they had little time or energy for actual conversations and instead let their wandering hands do all the speaking for them. On second thought, perhaps this you smell too nice should go somewhere in between the slurred your hands are so soft (which Olli had blurted out that time in LA when he had drank himself under the table and Aleksi had helped him to bed) and the secret little kiss Aleksi had placed right above Olli's ear just this morning when Olli had pretended to still be asleep, just to not scare Aleksi off.
Next to him, Aleksi held his breath too, as if the realisation of what he had said only hit him with Olli's follow-up oh?, but he didn't keep Olli in suspense for too long this time.
"Yeah," Aleksi whispered with his voice still so sleepy and his lips still so sweetly soft against Olli's jaw.
"So you wanna stay in for a little longer?" Olli's own lips were but touching Aleksi's forehead, right where he assumed the headache was stabbing Aleksi's skull the worst.
"Yeah." By then, Aleksi was clinging on to him so tightly that Olli thought Aleksi was trying to get through him.
"Want me to help you feel good?" Olli's mouth was dry when he spoke the words, their secret little code for wanting to get even closer to the other than they already were.
Aleksi seemed to think for a while (almost a little too long) until at last he put Olli out of his misery.
"Yeah."
Relief tugged at the corners of Olli's lips. Olli needed no more assurement as he rolled to his side and, in doing so, gently pushed Aleksi to lie on his back in turn. The man let out a small whine of complaint when their bodies were no longer pressed tightly against one another, so Olli wasted no time in placing his knees on either side of Aleksi's hips and starting to leave faint (but loving (such loving)) kisses up and down his neck.
"This okay?" Olli asked, never stopping the string of kisses from Aleksi's jawline down to collarbone.
"Yeah," Aleksi sighed in response, so Olli kept going, stopping only for the second it took to pull Aleksi's hoodie over his head.
"This okay?" The shirt gone, Olli's mouth was now finding its way further down Aleksi's chest, barely lifting his lips off Aleksi's skin before leaving another kiss, and another, and another.
Past Aleksi's belly button, Olli curled his fingers under the waistband of Aleksi's sweatpants.
"This ok–"
"Yeah." Aleksi's response was much hurried now, much more breathless, with impatience oozing through. Such hunger turned Olli on like nothing else (then again, pretty much everything about Aleksi did), and he resisted the urge to grind his crotch against the mattress for some blissful friction.
A temptation he could not resist, however, was that of teasing Aleksi whenever he had the chance, which made Olli abandon his plans to take Aleksi out of his pants just yet and instead he brushed his nose against the outline of Aleksi's half-hard cock. It twitched and grew under his touch, just as Aleksi's sighs and whimpers grew louder and more desperate and so lovely that Olli contemplated taking Aleksi in his mouth all at once when he finally undressed Aleksi. Lust and hunger washed through Olli at the sight of Aleksi's throbbing member, but he pushed his own needs aside for the sake of Aleksi's; his only need in that moment was that of making Aleksi feel so euphoric that he'd forget his own name.
Ignoring Aleksi's clear indications that he, too, would rather Olli wrapped his lips around his hard-on with no time wasted (the thrust of Aleksi's hips, the desperate groan that echoed in the room, the hands that groped for Olli's hair), Olli resumed his task of worshipping Aleksi's body and let his trail of kisses continue past Aleksi's lower stomach to his hips and groins. There, just above the rose tattoo decorating Aleksi's thigh, Olli found his favourite place to kiss: simultaneously close enough and too far away to drive Aleksi absolutely crazy, if Olli was to judge by the sound of his whines.
As these whines became more desperate and began to mix up with breathless swear words, it was time for Olli to reward Aleksi for his patience. Olli then curled a few of his fingers around the base of Aleksi's cock, rubbing them up and down while listening to Aleksi's whimpers turn into heavy, much calmer sighs of pleasure. When Aleksi was fully hard in Olli's hand, Olli pulled down his foreskin and let his lips hover near the pink head he had just revealed.
"This okay?" He demonstrated 'this' by placing gentle kisses along Aleksi's length, giving special attention to the sensitive head as he knew it was where Aleksi wanted his lips most.
"Just...fucking..." Aleksi gasped in between kisses to his cock. “Fuck you, Matela."
It was another example of their secret code language, reserved for when they couldn't use the actual words to phrase their desires out loud. Fuck you, Matela, Aleksi would say when Olli wouldn't get his hand down Aleksi's boxers fasts enough for his liking in a backstage bathroom; fuck you, Mattson, Olli would say when he'd feel Aleksi's lips at the back of his neck and Aleksi's hard cock grinding against the back of his pyjama shorts in the tourbus bunk.
They both knew what it meant; they both knew they could never speak aloud the words they replaced.
It was not the time and place for Olli to dwell on that now, not with Aleksi's throbbing cock in between his lips. There were much more urgent matters at hand, such as the little drop of precum that threatened to run down Aleksi's length if Olli wouldn't lick it off. He savoured the salty taste of Aleksi on this tongue for a while and then, finally, took Aleksi's head in between his lips.
Immediately Aleksi let out a soft cry that turned into a moan the more of him Olli took in his mouth. The earlier frustration from his tone was gone, now given way to bliss and pure lust as Olli began working a slow but steady rhythm, bobbing up and down Aleksi's erection. He kept one hand on Aleksi's hip, to let the man know he was done teasing him so he could lie down and let Olli do all the work, while his other hand was at the base of Aleksi's cock, stroking and twisting and squeezing to lure out more sweet sounds out of Aleksi's mouth. After a while, Olli felt Aleksi tense under his touch, which usually meant he was close to finishing, and maybe on some other morning Olli would have let it be swift and simple like that. This morning was different, though, with Aleksi's headache and the miserable look in his eyes that Olli had wanted to brush away more than anything ever, so instead of keeping on sucking until Aleksi would reach his climax, Olli let Aleksi’s cock slip out of his mouth as a better idea popped into his head.
Any objections Aleksi was about to voice were silenced by two of Olli’s fingers placed on Aleksi’s bottom lip, his mouth already hanging open. Knowing exactly what he was expected to do, Aleksi took the fingers in his mouth with no resistance and began sucking on them with such vigour that did not pale in comparison to Olli sucking on his cock a moment ago. All the while Aleksi kept looking up at Olli with such brightness in his eyes that blinded Olli even in the darkness of the hotel room, even with lust and longing hazing Olli's eyesight.
He knew he shouldn't, because it was the one rule they had, but Olli simply couldn't resist kissing Aleksi on his wet lips when Olli took his saliva-coated fingers off Aleksi's mouth. At least it was only the briefest touch of their lips, gone in a second, leaving Olli's entire soul yearning and begging for more, so maybe it didn't count.
(Just like none of their other kisses did.)
Aleksi was already spreading his legs when Olli begun making his way back down, still with no rush whatsoever, stopping to sink his teeth on Aleksi's pectoral muscles and licking off some more salty precum that had flowed on Aleksi's stomach in the meantime. Then Olli took Aleksi back in his mouth, swallowing as much of Aleksi's length as he could, while his lubed-up fingers found Aleksi's rim. Rubbing it for a while, Olli first slid in one finger, soon followed by the other, and before he knew it, Aleksi was squirming and whimpering on the bed in front of him.
Olli tried to prolong Aleksi's pleasure as long as he could, taking his time massaging Aleksi's prostate and kissing the head of his cock gently before sucking it in his mouth again, but he knew Aleksi was already on the brink of his relief. Although he would have loved to feel the weight of Aleksi's member on his tongue and the heat of Aleksi's body around his fingers for just a little longer, Olli saw it was time for him to help Aleksi over the edge, and so he curled his fingers inside Aleksi once more. Just about a second or two later, his Olli's mouth was flooding with hot semen and his ears almost ringing with Aleksi's loud cries; cries that started to resemble sobs after a while, yet Aleksi kept riding down on Olli's fingers – as if to chase something that was too far out of his reach.
When the steady flow of cum filling Olli's mouth dried out, Aleksi seemed to give up chasing whatever alternate ending he had been after and lied breathless and spent in front of Olli. Not able to help himself, Olli peppered Aleksi's naked body with some more small kisses (everywhere except that one part of him Olli wasn't allowed to kiss (although he still did)), after which he settled down next to him. Their roles had reversed then, so now it was Aleksi lying on his back with his eyes closed, and Olli curled up on his side, face buried in his neck. Olli couldn't stop the kisses falling out of his mouth, as if there were too much of them in that corner of his soul where he tried to keep his love for Aleksi somehow in control and hidden and now it was overflowing with no other place to go except any vacant spot of Aleksi's skin he could reach.
Maybe some of them landed even on Aleksi's lips, despite it all. And maybe Aleksi responded to them, in spite of... everything.
(No one would have to know.)
(Olli did, of course, but he had grown used to repressing so many of his feelings lately.)
"Headache gone?" Olli asked when they had lied in silence for too long.
"Almost," Aleksi shook his head, then turned his face to touch the tip of his nose to Olli's. "Thanks."
Olli felt his own erection pulsating inside his trousers and adjusted himself to lie by Aleksi's side a little more comfortably, as he had no plans to let go of Aleksi just yet.
"Ummm. Want me to help you with that or...?" Aleksi rolled his hips enough to rub against Olli's bulge, but Olli declined the offer. He could jack himself off in the shower later (thinking of Aleksi, imagining it was his hand instead of his own), but right now, Aleksi's comfort was far more important to him than his own.
Love in fractions, in moments like this: that was all Olli would ever have. Still, it was better than nothing at all.
I'm going to call this series "MJ is a Whumpee", what better way to get writing experience than to actually get the experience in real life.
Of course not everyone will get to experience everything so why not share it.
So "MJ is a Whumpee" will be updated as regularly as I can. Plus I will explain what a Whumpee might experience and what they may want or need from a Caretaker or even Whumper. Some may even contain a story.
Today's (Friday, Aug 16) experience... getting a tooth pulled.
I have had a broken tooth since March 2020. I was starting to see the dentist and getting my dental health back together when covid started. Because of that I canceled my dental cleaning, and right after that my tooth broke, and had been rotting away since then. My dentist wanted to continue fixing my other teeth before any of them could break away, then send me to the oral surgeon to have it pulled.
A few months ago, I went to him because I was in so much pain. He said he believed it was the broke one causing the pain. He gave me the order to get the tooth pulled, but I had to wait for about 50 days still because of the long schedule. I was given antibiotics and painkillers to last.
This is my experience.
For most of this week I was nervous, but I think the excitement of getting it out of my mouth overpowered my nerves.
Appointment morning Friday. I woke up nervous, and the nerves get stronger as the appointment time gets closer, 1pm.
Now, I am a Whumpee without a Caretaker, I have people that will help me when I need it, but most of this I am doing on my own.
I am shaking during my drive to the oral surgeon.
Go in and get checked in. Sit in the waiting room and try to relax knowing everything would be alright.
Warning: I will be going into detail about the extraction here. I have a cut off as I will be explaining the process, and I know that could gross or squick some out.
There will be a story under here as well.
I get sat down and talk with the dental surgeon, then sign some paperwork.
I received the shots to numb, and I waited for 10-15 min for the numbing to fully take affect.
The surgeon finally comes in and makes sure I am numb before they get started.
I am given a spacer to keep my mouth open, and gauze is put their as well.
As the dentist starts to work, a third person comes from above my head and says, "I am going to support your neck and head". I then feel hands around my throat and chin, not to choke, but they do have some pressure here.
Even while getting my tooth pulled I'm thinking about Whumpee and what would happen with someone holding their throat while two other people are pulling a tooth out. Like flashbacks, PTSD, crying, past trauma. You can really add some nightmare fuel here.
So I can feel pressure as they are shaking my head. Pulling the tooth, moving it back and forth.
The sounds.... Oof, I cringed. Just imagine the sound of a tooth getting pulled from your jawbone and skin. It sounds like shredding and wet.... ugh. Then it is right there by your ear, just 🤢
The oral surgeon tells me that I will hear the sound of the dental drill like at the dental office. It's almost louder though.
It's sensory overload, taste, sound, people in your mouth.
I know I moaned a few times. I couldn't feel anything, but I was imagining how painful it would have been.
She then went into stitching... now I can't feel anything going on, but I could only imagine what that felt like without numbing.
I had to bite down on gauze for around an hour during my drive home on my own. I needed to go to the pharmacy first to get medicine. I bought myself a gift for being so brave though.
Story time... though I do not have a caretaker, I will be giving Whumpee one in this story, because I love my Caretakers.
Caretaker made a small breakfast for Whumpee. They said they weren't really hungry, but Caretaker wanted them to have something in them for later.
Whumpee slowly picked away at the breakfast.
Caretaker watched as Whumpee's shakiness made it hard to function.
"It's okay to be nervous", Caretaker patted Whumpee's shoulder gently, "it's a new experience."
"I think my excitement is making me less nervous, but I'm so scared still", Whumpee admitted.
"I'm glad you're excited. You've come a long way. I'm glad your dentist said it was time to get this done now", Caretaker smiled as they cleared the table, "we will leave in about an hour, the paperwork is done. But they need to scan a few things before the appointment."
Whumpee nodded.
Later on, Caretaker was reviewing Whumpee's records to make sure they had everything in order. They were going to a new place to have the tooth removed.
"I can't believe you've had all of these visits already", Caretaker reminisced, "we are finally getting somewhere."
"Whumpee if you would, please brush your teeth", Caretaker called.
"Okay", Caretaker heard Whumpee get up from the couch and head to the bathroom.
Caretaker thought back to the timid patient they had taken in only two years prior.
Whumpee had come out of a long term hostage situation. They had a lot of medical needs, but their dental was a big issue.
Caretaker had to take them in every couple of months to have their teeth checked and cleaned. This broken tooth had been watched closely and it was causing major pain now. So the dentist said it was time.
Whumpee was finally taken back and sat down.
After consulting with the dentist and Whumpee getting a full run down on everything that would be done they decided to start numbing Whumpee's mouth.
The dentist left for a few minutes while the numbing took affect.
"You heard the part about an assistant holding your neck", Caretaker reminded Whumpee.
Whumpee nodded, "I don't really know how I'm going to feel about that, but I know it needs to be done."
Caretaker nodded, "I will be right here with you, and I will react as we have practiced in the past for when you have an episode."
Whumpee nodded again.
When everyone came into the room Caretaker went over what would happen if Whumpee had a flashback or anything of the sort. Then explained to them what steps they would need to take to keep Whumpee safe.
Once agreed upon, everyone got into place.
Whumpee moaned while the dentist harshly wiggled the tooth.
"I know you are feeling pressure, but is there any pain" the doctor stopped for a moment."
"Nu-uh", Whumpee mumbled.
Caretaker stayed down at Whumpee's feet and gently squeezed their toes. They had done this multiple times during Whumpee's appointments.
Whumpee said it helped them be able to focus and know they were not alone.
The tooth was finally out and everything was set. Whumpee just needed to rest for a few minutes before they could get up.
They smiled weakly when Caretaker came around.
"I am so proud of you", Caretaker gently ran their hand through Whumpee's hair and straightened a few snarls, "you did so good."
"Thankyou", Whumpee tried to talk with a giant piece of gauze in their mouth, "they said I can keep the tooth."
"Yes I heard them. I know you wanted to keep it", Caretaker smiled, "when you feel ready we can head to the pharmacy and go home."
"I think I feel alright", Whumpee started to sit up.
Caretaker laughed at Whumpee during their drive. Whumpee sat in the passenger seat poking their cheek.
"It's so numb", Whumpee poked at their cheek a few more times, "I don't know if I like it, it feels weird."
"Yes I don't much enjoy getting numbed myself", Caretaker agreed.
"So what else are we doing today?", Whumpee looked around.
"Well we are going to the pharmacy to get your medicine the dentist sent out, and you may pick out something for doing so well", Caretaker smiled as Whumpee's eyes lit up, "then we are going home so you can rest."
Whumpee nodded, "may I pick out a toy or maybe a coloring book?"
"Yes, you can pick out anything you like", Caretaker nodded.
"I wonder if I'm to old to be wanting toys though", Whumpee frowned.
"No one is ever too old to enjoy toys", Caretaker frowned, "adults can enjoy toys just as much as anyone else."
Whumpee now sat in the living room happily looking at the item they had chosen.
"How are you feeling?", Caretaker peaked in at them, "is the numbing waring off yet?"
"I think it is a little now", Whumpee felt their cheek.
"Okay, let's get that medicine in you, and I have a surprise for you as well", Caretaker smiled.
"A-a surprise?", Whumpee's eyes lit up.
"I'll be right back", Caretaker turned.
Caretaker came back with a huge grin and a container with Whumpee's meds.
"What is the surprise?", Whumpee eagerly took the medicine.
"Just a few minutes more, and I'll bring it out for you", Caretaker chuckled.
Whumpee set their item to the side and watched the doorway for Caretaker to come back in.
"Alright Whumpee", Caretaker came in carrying two plates, "I stayed up late making this for you, so I hope you enjoy."
"Is that your jello?", Whumpee's eyes sparkled, "you haven't made that in so long."
"Since your last major procedure.... I feel like it's a bit of a tradition now to have jello after you have something major done. This will also be easy for you to eat."
Whumpee looked excitedly at the plate they were holding. This jello was almost a comfort treat for them. It was the first treat Caretaker had made for them when they first came to live with them.
Whumpee had to have a several surgeries around their mouth and jaw so they were very limited. The jello became a sweet treat that Caretaker made them multiple times.
Caretaker sat down across from them.
"I, of course, have to have some as well", Caretaker smiled as they remembered eating the jello with Whumpee after the procedures. This way, Whumpee could enjoy it with someone else.
Whumpee quickly scooped some into their spoon, then jiggled it a little as they lifted it to their mouth.
They giggled happily at the familiar safe flavor.
"This brings back so many memories", Whumpee smiled as they scooped up more, "it taste so yummy."
"I'm glad you like it. There was a while when you ate this daily after meals... I'm surprised you didn't get sick of it", Caretaker laughed as Whumpee played with the treat.
"The one food that it is okay to play with", Whumpee giggled again.
"Yes, but I do need to put a small damper on things", Caretaker sighed, "I would like you to take a small nap after eating this. You used up a lot of energy with your nervousness and stress. Plus it will let your body have time to heal. Are we okay with that plan?"
Whumpee looked up and nodded, "I do feel a little tired."
"I can imagine", Caretaker smiled.
Caretaker sat across from Whumpee while they slept. They were organizing Whumpee's care chart.
"Such a brave soul, everything you went through. I'm so proud of you", Caretaker smiled as they set the book aside, "it's an honor taking care of you."
Notes from the last day.... movement of my mouth is limited, and I am very sore. 🥲
Yes, I absolutely kept my tooth that was pulled out. I also ate blue raspberry jello that night as well.-MJ 🦷
We're finally on the way home kids...
CW: BBU-adjacent, institutionalized slavery. Beta-read by @alittlewhump <3
The clock on the dashboard of Delia’s Honda glows bright blue, digital colon blinking between the six and five every second like a heartbeat. Only seven more minutes until the CVS opens. Leo scans the parking lot for the dozenth time. It’s still nearly empty, unchanged since they pulled in ten minutes ago after a drive twice as long as it needed to be. The pharmacy is the only store with any lights on, the rest of the strip mall’s windows and signs are dark. Errant snowflakes flurry through the light cast by the street lamps, inconsistent and sparse, borrowed from a passing storm. It would be peaceful if it weren’t for the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.
Leo drags a hand over his face and takes a deep breath. He can’t even remember the last time he pulled an all-nighter. It must have been back when he was young enough for it not to feel like he’d been hit by a bus. Beside him, Aiden is still and quiet, save for the just-audible exhales he forces between pursed lips. Measured and even like he’s trying to stave off tears or panic or pain or some combination of all three. They hadn’t spoken on the ride over, both tensely checking the mirrors to make sure they weren’t being followed.
Not that there was anything to say.
He couldn’t even look at him.
If Aiden were a normal teenager—whatever that means—he’d be giving him hell. How could you be so impulsive? I already thought I lost you once today and now you’re jumping at the next chance? Do you have any idea what that would be like for me? Trying to get on with my life after they’d taken you back? Can’t you see how much I care about you?
But he couldn’t say any of that. Didn’t know what to say, so he couldn’t look at him right now. Aiden quietly resumed his charade. Sure, the raid wasn't over yet but Leo couldn’t help wondering if he was putting on an extra show of cooperation as a demonstration of goodwill.
Did he regret what he almost did? Or just the fact that he got caught?
When he was sure Aiden’s eyes were closed, Leo looked into his face. The ruse wasn’t at all convincing, Leo knew him too well. For starters, the overwrought way Aiden managed his breath was a dead giveaway. A far cry from the gentle, inherent rhythm of sleep even he managed. Leo had clocked more minutes than he was willing to admit frozen in the hallway, letting himself feel an undeserved modicum of relief when that smooth sound reached his ears.
Just as telling was the determination in the tension of his jaw, only a little diluted by the way he was holding the inside of his bottom lip between his teeth to keep it from trembling. He was braver than Leo could ever give him credit for. He barely understood the first thing about this kid, yet here he was, reading every twitch of his brows and hitch of his breath like he had the whole frame of reference.
Thankfully, this charade didn’t solely hinge on his or Aiden’s poor acting skills. The devil was in the details on this one. It was the set that truly sold it and revealed just how much practice Delia has had at this.
Greeting cards crowded the windowsill, all sure to have handwritten messages on the inside. Either abandoned and repurposed or manufactured for this explicitly. A handmade quilt was tucked over the foot of the bed, balloons filled one corner up to the ceiling, and fresh flowers sat on all three tables. A hand-painted ‘Keep Fighting’ sign stretched across the wall with messages and names written over handprints. He recognized Delia’s handwriting in one corner. There’s no way she had recruited so many sympathizers so at least half of those notes and wildly different signatures had to have been done by her hand. Again, he was unsure whether to be unnerved or impressed by the level of dedication. Which was about as terrifying as it was comforting because maybe it meant the agents really weren’t coming back.
And that was about all the time he could spend distracting himself from what the fuck was going on and where the hell was that damn sister of his.
It was all he could do not to compulsively check his phone every second. Was it on? Was it even still in his pocket? What if he didn’t get service in this corner of the hospital?
By the time there was a knock on the door, he had wound himself up so much that he jumped to his feet. In his flat-out panic, he forgot any recognition of the cadence of knocks and was certain they were caught but he was just pinned to the spot like an idiot. When the curtains parted, of course it was only Noah and he knew that, but he had passed the useful kind of adrenaline-fueled exhaustion about five hours ago.
“They’ve given the all clear. Everything good here?” Leo’s obvious lack of composure earned raised eyebrows from Noah.
He cleared his throat and straightened, his lower back tight after trying to conform to the chair. “As far as I know…they came in but a nurse made them leave before—” He resisted the impulse to look at Aiden who hadn’t moved, save opening his eyes to watch them. A deer frozen on the edge of the yard, afraid bolting would mean certain death. Ironic. “Where’s Delia?”
Now Noah looked caught out. “She’s, uh, she’s got her hands full with a…patient…”
Leo struggled to keep his voice even. “What? Did they find something?”
“No, no, nothing like that. It’s…look it’s better if you don’t know the details. I’m sure you want to get out of here anyway.” He cast a meaningful glance at Aiden. “Here are some notes for the prescriptions. They’re ready to fill at the pharmacy, antibiotics and—”
“Wait a second.” He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “How deep into this shit are you two? I’m grateful for what you did for us but this doesn’t seem like something you should be making a habit of.”
Noah had the gall to chuckle—little shit—but when he saw Leo’s expression he quickly swallowed it. “Hey, man, I get it. There’s a reason I don’t tell my family. But I’m sure you know Delia well enough to know she’s not a ‘follower’.” He even used air quotes around the word. “We’re not even in the same unit. We didn’t realize we were both doing this independently until one of our shelter contacts introduced us.” Leo didn’t even try to mask his doubt so Noah continued, “For what it’s worth, it’s a lot safer for both of us having each other’s backs. But as you well know, the risks are never zero when you’re on this side of the law.”
On this side of the law.
The phrase twisted and turned in his head as Noah led them out through the labyrinth of back stairwells, quiet wards, and service elevators. It pressed against his thoughts as they huddled in a supply closet from a rush of doctors responding to a code blue. It loomed over him as he rested his hands on Aiden’s shoulders when he nearly jumped out of the wheelchair at the slam of a door. It echoed loudest when he was behind the wheel and it was on him to get them home safe. And figure everything else out.
“L-Leo?” Aiden ducks his chin when Leo looks over, like he didn’t intend to say his name out loud and isn’t sure what to do with his attention now that he has it. He picks at the cuticle of his right thumb, lips moving like he’s trying to shape his words just right before speaking. After a minute of that, he presses them together, flattens his hands on his thighs and meets Leo’s eyes. “Mmm’sorry…before…mmm…” His chin starts to tremble and it’s obvious he wants to look away but he forces himself to maintain eye contact. “I-I-I…mmm…mmm…”
“Alright, it’s okay.” Leo can’t bear the kid’s self-imposed confession. “I’m not mad. I can’t say I understand what might have possessed you but, anyway, we’re good. Water under the bridge.” It feels a little blunt and more than a little awkward but he adds, “You’re not in any trouble,” like Delia said dozens of times throughout the night.
“Mmm…but…I’mmm…I-I-I…” Aiden furrows his brow like he’s still trying to find a word, lips moving, but tears well in his eyes, threatening to spill the longer he searches.
“Don’t worry about it,” Leo repeats gently. “It’s all good.”
Aiden doesn’t look placated at all. He balks at Leo, visibly distressed, lips quivering as he pauses mid-silent-syllable.
Shit. That’ll encourage the kid to communicate more, just cut him off like an impatient ass. But if this is just some other backwards Companion obedience thing… Leo’s out of energy for trying to wade through how exactly to handle this. He has so much research to do. Is it even safe to do research?
“I’m sorry, hon. Look” Aiden flinches when Leo's hand meets his shoulder.
He grimaces at Leo apologetically, shaking his head at himself. He swipes at a tear with the back of his hand and shakes his head again, a ragged exhale escaping his lips.
“I know it’s not easy, we’ll figure it out together.”
Aiden looks up, biting his lips together as he tries to blink back the rest of his tears. It’s heartbreaking to watch. Leo hopes he doesn’t think there’s any problem with him crying when he needs to. At the same time, Leo can also understand why he wouldn’t want to always be breaking down.
“For now, let’s just focus on getting home, okay?”
Aiden nods, pulling his hands into his sleeves and wiping away the last of the tears. He puts on a brave face.
“Good boy.”
Aiden looks away shyly. Leo opens his mouth to take it back, to apologize for saying something so patronizing, so offensive. He meant it more as a ‘good sport’, ‘atta boy’. He—
There, behind the fist Aiden rests his cheek against as he pretends to look out the window, is a hint of a smile.
Only this kid can shatter his heart and melt it in the span of five minutes.
(please publish this anonymously; I don't want my health details out under my name)
I went to the campus health center today. I'm really nervous about going to doctors, because I've had bad experiences with several before, and so I rarely go. But yesterday I got a UTI, so I had to go.
And I was treated amazingly. No dirty looks. No sighs and snide remarks (last time I was there, it was "Looks like you're too heavy for the scale. How much do you weigh?", with a rolling of the eyes). Just compassionate and friendly medicine. My blood pressure was very high when the nurse took it the first time - but when I said I have normal blood pressure, and I was just feeling nervous from the clinical environment, she not only listened, but took it two more times over the course of the appointment (it went down to high-normal the second time, and perfectly normal the third time! If she had kept my first number, my medical chart would have falsely shown me to be suffering from high blood pressure, when actually I'm fine.) When talking to me about the UTI, she didn't attribute it to my size (my mother, when I told her I was going to the clinic: "Well, fat girls get those a lot because they're too big to clean themselves properly"), instead talking to me about my habits and realizing it was probably because I spend long hours studying and sometimes forget to drink enough water and/or take bathroom breaks. And the kicker - in a twenty-minute appointment, she didn't mention my weight once. Not once!!
Afterwards I sat outside waiting for my bus almost in tears, because I'd been treated like a human in a healthcare environment. From the nurse - who was amazing - to the receptionist to the pharmacy techs, everyone was nice and caring and didn't make me feel like shit once. And what does it say about thin privilege, that this was literally the first time in my life as a fat person - 10 years - that I was able to experience that? Before today, I couldn't imagine having a good doctor's visit, without being shamed the entire time (and made to feel like whatever was wrong with me was attributed to my size). Now I can, and it's made me realize just how horrible the usual way is.
Thin privilege is not fighting back tears after a doctor's visit because you can't believe that healthcare professionals treated you well.
(Also intersects with white and class privilege.)
