Over the past year or two, the news has been full of horror stories about shoplifting. To hear some people tell it, you’d think petty theft was a crisis of apocalyptic proportions. In the New York Post, for instance, we read that shoplifting is an “epidemic taking over America.” The Financial Times issues dire warnings of “surging shopping crime,” while Fox News insists that “the shoplifting crisis is a nightmare.” ABC’s Nightline airs scary-looking footage of what its hosts call “brazen smash-and-grabs”: people in masks breaking store windows, grabbing armloads of clothing, and running off. In the opinion pages of the New York Times, Pamela Paul waxes poetic over “What We Lose to Shoplifting.” (The loss in question? Paul herself feels less comfortable in stores these days. Riveting stuff.)
In response to this supposed scourge, there’s been a resurgence in “tough-on-crime” tactics, both from corporations and political leaders. In department stores like Target, customers are confronted by elaborate new security measures, with everything from toothpaste to frozen pizza locked behind glass. Rite Aid pharmacies have turned to facial-recognition software to guard their merchandise, only to discover that their computers falsely identify people as “likely shoplifters”—particularly if those people have dark skin. In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has launched an entire police task force dedicated to retail theft. And on the campaign trail, Donald Trump has called for more violent measures, saying that police should simply shoot shoplifters on sight.
But statistical data shows that the reports of a shoplifting “epidemic” are highly exaggerated, if not outright made up. In a recent report, the Council on Criminal Justice gathered data about retail theft from 24 different U.S. cities, examining the frequency of reports, the dollar value of items stolen, the number of people involved in each crime, and several other factors. At first glance, it did appear that shoplifting was on the rise in the first half of 2023, as it increased by 16 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, as German Lopez notes in the New York Times, that figure was heavily skewed by data from New York City. Remove the Big Apple, and the numbers tell a different story: shoplifting has actually decreased in 17 of the 24 cities surveyed, and is now fairly rare, with just 38.6 reported incidents per 100,000 people. In June 2019, that number was 45.1. Shoplifting might be happening more often in New York City specifically, but an “epidemic taking over America,” it isn’t.
[...] As author and civil rights lawyer Alec Karakatsanis points out, there’s also a strong class element involved in what kinds of behaviors are deemed newsworthy to begin with:
When the daily news media reports on a “crime wave” or a “surge in shoplifting” nearly every time the numbers from the police department fluctuate upward (note that no similar metaphors are used for decreases), they are almost always using these terms to describe the collective behavior of poor people and other marginalized groups. Things rich people do don’t often get this same metaphoric treatment in daily news. How many times do you see a major news story on a “surge” in tax evasion (a problem over 60 times the magnitude of other reported property crimes) or a “wave of crime” by oil companies?

Thess vs Knowing Your Employees
I'm not doing very well, and I think everybody knows it. Like, not people who read my Tumblr or people I talk to on Discord or anything like that. I mean everybody.
Update on the overtime thing - apparently today was a fairly slow day in terms of reporting, so when I called at 3:30 as I was asked to, there were only about 130 dictations in the queue.
(Note: that sounds like a lot, and it is, but it was 450 on Tuesday.)
Things were chill enough at the office that Scruffman actually forgot he asked me to ring him to check in about the workload. I think that might have something to do with having emailed him a little earlier in the day about a significant issue with someone's dictation.
(Further note: our doctors use wireless headset microphones to dictate - Bluetooth, I think. Anyway, sometimes they end up sitting too far from their computers for a decent connection, and when that connection dies, the transcription software defaults to using whatever microphone is handy - which in our machines means one built into the webcam. And of course, if they're sitting so far away that the wireless connection won't work, they're not going to be very audible over lab noise either. Bad enough when it's a regular dictation, but there were two urgent cases I had to send back because they were inaudible and you don't make guesses about someone's urgent liver biopsy. I swear, half the doctors don't have the foggiest clue how to use the equipment and it shows.)
Anyway, point is, I actually had voice chat with the man. I can generally sound pretty professional under even the worst circumstances, but that's only to people who haven't dealt with me regularly. Scruffman has heard my "I am in serious pain and sucking it up" voice a lot. And to his credit, I'm pretty sure he noticed me using it. Because when I asked if I was going to be needed for overtime with our typing queue as it was, he said, "It's actually been really quiet, so we should be okay! I mean ... some of them do go crazy in the late afternoon ... and sometimes they come in on Saturday ... but no; no, you're fine on your regular hours; we'll be okay".
In those elliptical pauses, I could hear the "Oh [Thess] does not sound well. Even if we're not fine, I can push [Temp] and [Goblin] a little harder on Monday, or we can work it out after [Thess] has had an actual break." I mean, I'm sure he does actually care, but there's also an awful lot of "Working [Thess] this hard is going to result in more sick leave and we really can't afford that right now, particularly not from the best worker the department has right now", and more than a little "[Thess] got reduced hours because of a disability and if [Thess] has to go on long-term sick again, Occupational Health is going to eat my head". So not purely altruistic motives, but at least he noticed.
That said, I'm still not doing well. While I did not have overtime, I did still have to go out to pick up some painkillers and a couple of bits and pieces. A bad idea during rush hour, but needed to get to things before they shut. Painkillers aside, I forgot to order carrots and I like carrots in my Japanese curry, which is very much on the menu this month. Carrot, potato, onion, and butternut squash. Might fill it out with some sweet potato too this time.
I did treat myself a little, though. Slightly longer travel time hurt, but it meant going to the big Tesco that does the gluten-free onion rings. And sirloin steak was on sale. So guess what I had for dinner? (Well, with potato salad and some veggie crudites with ranch dip; veggies are good.) It was a much-deserved treat, and thankfully didn't require a lot of effort.
I'd love to say I'm going to just relax tomorrow, and I sort of will, but if I have to go to the pharmacy for my prescription meds if I wake up early enough, and either way I should go to the big Sainsbury's to stock up on gluten-free pasta. It's a pain in the arse; Tesco has a great range of gluten-free products but their gluten-free pasta is bullshit, while Sainsbury's doesn't have quite the same selection but does the only really edible own-brand gluten-free pasta I've found so far. I hate having to go to like three different shops to get a full gluten-free shop stock-up.
Anyway, also there might be baking. I'm going to have to order more gluten-free flour already. But then again, two cakes, one loaf of gingerbread, and a batch of chocolate chip cookies and I'm still not through the entire bucket. So that's something.
To summarise: I am not doing well, I'm still using Saturday for as much recovery as possible (sad as missing a Saturday session makes me, I would not run well in this state), and I want cookies.

Rising Focus on Patient-Centric Care Fueling Patient Engagement Solutions Use
Patients suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) require constant engagement with medical facilities as such ailments affect people for a long duration and need constant monitoring. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 700 million people in the age bracket of 20–79 years will be suffering from diabetes by 2045. Further, the World Health Organization (WHO), CVDs, diabetes, and cancer account for 17.9 million, 1.5 million, and 9.3 million deaths respectively, each year.
In recent years, patient engagement solution providers, such as Medical Information Technology Inc., Computer Programs and Systems Inc., Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc., InterSystems Corporation, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), Epic Systems Corporation, Cerner Corporation, eClinicalWorks LLC, and athenahealth Inc. are actively engaging in research and development (R&D) for introducing novel solutions to improve the condition of patients. For example, in April 2018, McKesson Corporation introduced Health Mart Atlas to deliver high-quality care. This managed-care solution is a strong network of high-performing community pharmacies.
Patient management software, hardware, and services offered by the aforementioned solution providers are used in health management, financial health management, home health management, and social and behavioral health management applications. In recent years, patient engagement solutions were primarily used in health management applications, due to the surging adoption of technological solutions, owing to the rising government initiatives toward spreading awareness among people regarding disease prevention. Owing to the wide application base of such solutions, they are used by individuals as wells as healthcare organizations.
According to P&S Intelligence, North America dominated the patient engagement solutions market in the recent past, due to the surging incidence of chronic ailments and the soaring number of healthcare information technology (HIT) solution providers in the region. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are the most common causes of disabilities and fatalities in the U.S. Moreover, the presence of a well-established healthcare infrastructure is boosting the adoption of patient engagement solutions in the region.
Whereas, Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected to adopt patient engagement solutions at the fastest pace in the foreseeable future. This can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, rising awareness about such solutions for managing patients, and escalating geriatric population in the region. For example, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) predicts that the number of diabetic patients in South East Asia in the age group of 20–79 years will increase from 88 million in 2019 to 153 million by 2045.
Thus, the growing incidence of chronic diseases and increasing government support for patient-centric care will fuel the adoption of patient engagement solutions in the coming years.

This isn’t quite what OP is talking about, but I go to a small local pharmacy (which is not a compounding pharmacy). One thing you should know is that pharmacies lose money on some prescriptions—they take a loss. And if you’re Walgreens, or CVS, or Rite Aid, that’s fine because you’re big enough to eat the cost. But if you’re Small Local Pharmacist who works seven days a week and hasn’t had a day off in over a year (aka my pharmacist), that makes a pretty significant impact. When I was switching my prescriptions to him he took me to the computer and showed me the original manufacturer’s price, sell price, profit margin, and how much my insurance would cover, which his software calculates. I have SEEN the negative numbers. It is astounding. And this is a person who cares about his community and has a good heart—he has a stack of receipts as thick as my fist of IOUs from people who picked up their prescriptions but haven’t fully paid for them yet. He’s operating in razor-thin margins and still taking IOUs to keep his community afloat. So yes, there is small local pharma! And even if they’re not developing drugs or compounding, these businesses are dying a slow death because they’re being squeezed out by large chains that can afford to take losses while the drug manufacturers also make bank.
You know how theres like ‘Big Pharma’ does mean theres like 'Small Pharma’ somewhere? Some tiny drug making cottage industry somewhere like Papa Joes Homemade Morphine or Ma'n’Pa’s Old Fashioned Prozac or someit?

Overcoming Challenges with Smart Invoice POS Software for Retail Stores in Zambia
A small retail store in Zambia, dealing in groceries, household items, and personal care products, struggled with managing its inventory and sales effectively. The manual processes were time-consuming, errors, and increasingly inefficient. In today’s digital era, the days of pen-and-paper billing are long gone. Modern retail businesses are embracing Point of Sale (POS) software to simplify operations and enhance productivity.
The retail sector spans a wide variety of businesses, from department stores to convenience stores, clothing shops to pharmacies. Operating a retail store with smart invoice POS software offers much more than just streamlined billing—it’s a comprehensive solution that enables efficient management of sales, inventory, and customer interactions. As a result, both large and small retail businesses are rapidly adopting POS systems to stay competitive.
What is POS Software?
POS software, or Point of Sale software, is a computer-based system designed to help businesses manage their sales, inventory, and customer data efficiently. It includes hardware components like a cash register, barcode scanner, and receipt printer, combined with software that tracks transactions, organizes inventory and generates insightful reports. This all-in-one solution simplifies financial management, enabling shopkeepers to maintain purchases, sales, and expenses digitally in one centralized location. By scanning product barcodes, the system instantly captures and processes product details, ensuring accuracy and speed.
Why Does Your Retail Business Need a POS System?
A POS system is an indispensable tool for modern retail businesses. It provides real-time management of sales, inventory, and customer data, helping to streamline operations and enhance the overall customer experience. Popular among retailers, restaurants, and the hospitality industry, POS systems are essential for improving efficiency, reducing errors, and supporting data-driven decision-making in today’s fast-paced business environment.
Common Retail Challenges: Overcoming Everyday Struggles in Retail
Running a retail business comes with its fair share of challenges. From managing transactions to competing with e-commerce platforms, here are some common pain points faced by retailers:
Billing Issues
Complicated billing processes, long queues, and difficult payment integrations are significant sources of frustration for both customers and retailers. Lengthy transactions and disorganized receipts can lead to lost sales and reduced customer satisfaction.
Manual Inventory Management
Manually tracking inventory can feel like juggling too many tasks at once, often resulting in errors and inefficiencies. A lack of real-time updates can lead to overstocking or running out of popular items, disrupting sales and customer experience.
Accounting Challenges
Managing daily transactions and bookkeeping manually or with outdated systems can be overwhelming for retailers. This increases the likelihood of errors, delays, and inefficiencies in financial reporting, making accounting a dreaded task.
CRM Struggles
Building strong customer relationships is vital for retail success, but many businesses lack the tools to effectively track customer interactions, preferences, and feedback. This can hinder personalized service and customer loyalty.
Supplier Data Management
From purchase orders to tracking deliveries, managing supplier data can be a tedious process. Errors or delays in fulfilling orders can disrupt stock levels and customer satisfaction.
Competing with E-Commerce
The rise of e-commerce has transformed shopping habits, making it challenging for physical stores to keep up. Without an online presence, retailers risk losing a significant portion of potential sales.
Multi-Store Management
For retailers managing multiple outlets, keeping track of inventory, sales, and staff across various locations can be exhausting. This complexity often leads to inefficiencies and missed opportunities to optimize operations.
Addressing these challenges with modern solutions like Retail POS software, integrated CRM systems, and digital inventory management tools can help retailers streamline their operations, improve customer satisfaction, and stay competitive in today’s market.
Why Do Retailers Need Smart Invoice Billing Software?
Retailers rely on smart invoice billing software for several crucial benefits that enhance their operations and customer experience:
Enhanced Efficiency and Accuracy
Smart billing software minimizes the risk of manual errors, ensuring invoices are generated quickly and accurately. This streamlines transactions and reduces discrepancies.
Simplified Inventory Management
With smart software, retailers can efficiently monitor stock levels, manage orders, and generate detailed reports. These insights empower better decision-making and prevent overstocking or shortages.
ZRA Compliance
Navigating Zambia's evolving tax regulations is made easy with smart billing software, which ensures accurate tax calculations and compliance with ZRA requirements.
Time and Cost Savings
Billing processes with POS software saves time by speeding up transactions and reducing the need for manual intervention. This also cuts down operational costs, allowing retailers to focus on growth.
How Can POS Software Benefit Your Grocery Store?
Implementing POS software in your grocery store offers numerous advantages, streamlining operations and enhancing customer satisfaction. Here's how it can help:
Simplify Sales Management
POS software simplifies the checkout process by allowing cashiers to quickly scan items using a barcode scanner, automatically adding them to the sale. This speeds up transactions and reduces errors.
