24. A sleepy kiss

Atem had rolled over groggily and kissed Alena on the forehead as he smiled at her sleepily. "Morning love." He mumbled in the mix as he then stole a kiss from her lips.

The sun was setting in Egypt, painting the sky in a beautiful shade of bright orange. Everything was quite peaceful at this time of the evening. The villagers and town’s people were slowly settling in for the evening as they were closing up shops. Everything was slowly getting more quiet and the same could be said for the massive palace that was towering over the town. Inside the palace itself, things were also getting less hectic and more relaxed. The guards were on their posts making sure no one comes in or out of the palace.

Deep within the palace walls, inside a dimly lit, but large bedroom, the monarch was also settling in. Dressed in only his kilt, he was standing outside on his bedroom balcony admiring the beautiful scenery and taking in the calm and peaceful atmosphere that was surrounding him.

After watching the sun disappear behind the horizon, the young Pharaoh felt a sudden chill on his bare skin. Egypt was always rather chilly at night. He wrapped his arms around himself as he rubbed his muscular forearms.

“brr…. Guess this is my que to go inside.”

The young King turned around and proceeded to walk back inside his large bedroom. His room was very large, maybe too large for such a rather small King. A massive king sized bed was in the center of the dimly lit bedroom. He could feel the warmth of several candles warming the room, and there were quite a lot of them. The Pharaoh walked to the side of the bed before sitting down on the edge of it. His hands gently rested at each side slightly grasping the sheets as his gaze lowers to his feet.

*……..”

He sat there in silence for a brief moment. The memory of a certain person (the reader) would often pop in to his mind at random. He repeated that one name, the name of a person who has played such a pivotal part in his journey to get where he is now.

With a deep sigh the King slowly leaned sideways until he was fully resting on the bed.

With this person on his mind and heart, he eventually fell asleep.

Feeling a warm sensation on his face, the young Pharaoh tried to open his eyes but was instantly blinded by the morning sun which was coming from the window.

”argh..!”

He let out a groan while lifting his arm up and resting the back of his hand across his eyes. He was not ready to wake up yet and especially not by such a bright sun. Slightly irritated, the King rolled on to his side and pulled the covers to his face. At the same time he heard a gentle knock on his bedroom door. He knew it were the servants who, like every morning, were coming to get the King ready for his daily duties. But this time, the Pharaoh wasn’t having any of it.

“Not now… “

He muttered in to the covers. He felt unusually tired this morning. He just wanted to stay in bed a while longer. But there was another gentle knock on his door which, by this point, was starting to irritate the Pharaoh.

“I said…not now!”

The king repeated himself as he lifted his head to be heard, but the knock persisted.

It wasn’t a problem when it was himself - or Yuugi for what mattered. They were used to being beaten, battered, torn into pieces. Humiliated. The standard bullying of old cruel Domino was child’s play for them and they were aces at it.

Yuugi wasn’t aware of his existence, at least not on a conscious level. But he knew that, in times of crisis, that he was the one to count on in.

And so it happened: three bullies from Jounouchi’s old gang now transferred to their school. Angels to the eyes of the uncaring teachers. Devils to the poor regular students. Yuugi and Jounouchi couldn’t sit still in the face of such atrocities, but him? He had the power to make them suffer.

No one ever thinks about what it is like to possess a body. The tingling sensation on your skin that lingers to the tip or your finger and the tip of your toes. The sickening garble of your now working organs. The beating of your heart echoing through your veins. The blessed air that finally gives you life coming through your mouth. It’s at that point that he finally wasn’t just the unknown spirit of the Puzzle anymore. He was “Yuugi”.

And “Yuugi”, going after the three bullies, had a job to do, holding a box of chess.

“Can I interest you guys…in playing a Shadow Game with me?”

(Blindfold Meme) There's an awkward shuffle and a soft, mirthless chuckle. "No, I...I'm talking to the right person. I just should have told you how much I'd miss you and that I wanted you to stay. There are lots of things I should have said but was afraid to."

"Well I'm here now. Apparently at your mercy, so...Have at it I suppose?" He arched a brow. "I do have to say you've got my entire attention whoever you are. Might as well use it to your advantage."

He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket as he was helping put away some boxes. He always had it on silent while he was working, and he made quick work of the boxes before pulling his phone out and answering, used to being called by unknown numbers wanting to sponsor his duelling that he’s had to turn down.

“Hello? Yugi Muto Speaking.” He spoke automatically in a slightly tired tone as he sandwiched his phone between his cheek and shoulder.

Went on a bit of a comm spree over on Subeta with a wonderful artist (username Tofu) and got portraits done for four of my YGO OCs. For two of them these were the very first pieces of art I have ordered for them. The original pieces were transparent, so I decided to use a few screencaps of relevant locations to act as backdrops for them. These girls were created between 2002 - 2005, maybe a smidge earlier. I can't remember exactly when my RP partner and I started our YGO storylines.

Anyway, I said that I would do a bit of rambling about my OCs when I had artwork for them, so I guess I'll do that. Just going to do a brief summary of each because otherwise I will be here all night. In the future I want to do a series of drabbles for each of them, using the prompts from last year's @ygoc-week.

Sanura: Courtier of the royal wives in ancient Egypt. She spends her days assisting them in the business of running the household staff and tending to the palace children. Her connection with the royal Court does not end there, however, as she is married to Mahaad. In terms of personality she is outgoing and loyal to a fault, as well as adventurous and curious about the world around her. She can also be very petty, blunt, stubborn and holds grudges like her life depends on it. There is little to no record of her existence in the modern day for a variety of reasons. But, if one were to trace the Ishtar family tree back far enough, she is one of their ancestors. Minkah, her and Mahaad's oldest son, marries Isis and Karim's daughter, and is among the first generation of tomb keepers. Check her tag to find out more about her, and to read the drabbles I have written for her thus far.

T'Kai: One of the royal wives in ancient Egypt. Married to Atem in a political marriage to strengthen ties with the far northern end of the kingdom. She does not have the warmest reputation outside of her inner circle, being rather quiet and reserved, but those lucky enough to know her on a deeper level know that that coolness is surface level. For all that she seems unapproachable the truth of the matter is that she is shy around new faces. That said, she takes her duties seriously, and will do what she has to to ensure the safety and welfare of those that she is responsible for. While T'Kai herself is not very threatening she can be frightening for one very good reason: Atem. It never hurts having the Pharaoh and his Sacred Court backing her up when and as needed.

Natalie: Niece of Pegasus that has served as a beta tester for Duel Monsters since the creation of the modern game; joins Industrial Illusions as a card artist and lore writer after graduating from art school. Slowly recovering from a lifetime of toxic perfectionism inflicted on her by her parents. Black sheep of the family on account that she is the product of an affair her mother had with the chauffer after growing bored with her marriage. Natalie has always been closer to her uncle than to her parents or older brother and has to spend a couple of years unpacking everything brought up during Duelist Kingdom while also trying to avoid getting sucked into the next world ending crisis somehow caused by a card game. Loses her soul once during one such world ending crisis - thanks, Atlantis.

Jade: A Domino native from a slightly shadier part of town, who has a track record of juvenile delinquency stemming from a desire to be anywhere but home. Both of her parents walked out of her life before her seventh birthday, first her father, then her mother. They had been a young couple - perhaps a bit too young. Rather than face the challenges of parenthood they ducked out, leaving her in the care of her maternal grandfather. While not a cruel man her grandfather is emotionally distant and cold, and strict. It is little surprise that as a teenager Jade rebels for the sake of rebelling. Along the way she gets swept up in the Rare Hunters, lured in by the promise of adventure, excitement and worthwhile rewards. Luckily she makes it out with her soul intact and eventually is able to find the peace and happiness in her life she is looking for. It is just a bit of a wild ride to get there.

So what made me pick Atem out of everyone, for real and for trusies?

I have a crush on the character.

Honestly that's what made me wanna rp him in the first place. Young Nikki fell in love with Atem alllllllll the way back when Battle City debuted and I started looking at arts, doujins, the like. I fell for him HARD. Seeing him be so cool, calm, and collected and just a fucking badass, protecting Little Yugi and just being so awesome. It made Little Nikki wonder... that can't be... all he is, right? A hard exterior, yea but... he has to have a softer side like everyone else, yea?

WHICH BRING US TO...

My thoughts on Atem's canon. He needed to be himself more. For the longest time, yes, he was just the Other Yugi, coming out when things got too rough for Yugi or when someone needed that bit of confidence boost. The date with Anzu showed us just a glimpse of the ACTUAL Atem: a fucking dork who doesn't know emotional cues AT ALL and just wants to play games, as shown when he stops in front of a game shop and Anzu's like "You want to go inside, don't you?" Throughout the whole anime, he's been shown as the stoic Nameless Pharaoh. But, ah... name ONE stoic/emotionally sound individual at fucking sixteen, when he was crowned. I'll wait.

Because of this, and I know I'm in the minority, but THAT'S why I love Doma, even though it's a filler season. With Yugi mostly out of the picture, we finally get to see Atem, the actual Atem. Broken emotions and all (aka the shit I write)

So while I appreciate the stoic, just, and noble Pharaoh just as much as anyone else, I wanted to see his more emotional and honest self more often. That's the purpose of this blog tbh. To write a more emotionally honest Atem, not the hardened one we see on screen.
