Chapter 7: Buck Moon

I had a dream last night about this old MMO game for kids similar to stuff like Club Penguin and Toontown called PhantomMoon. The game had a kinda-sorta gothic aesthetic to it with the player characters being these little zombie children that you could customize with different clothing and accessories that you bought using in-game currency called Phantokens or something which were earned in various mini games. A lotta the npcs had a similar gothic theme to them, usually being human villagers or other monsters, including the main “bad guys” of the series who were these Addams family ripoffs who owned an orphanage that the player character was originally from according to the in-game lore, but escaped from due to said orphanage being highly abusive.

Other than the weird themeing, there was seemingly nothing wrong with the actual MMO and a lotta kids enjoyed playing it back in the day until one day the servers were mysteriously shut down without warning.

Fast forward to present day, some now adult fans of the game end up finding it’s old code and starting to salvage it in attempt to bring back this beloved game from their childhood. It was during this rediscovery of the code that something dark was revealed about PhantomMoon.

You see, back during its heyday, a lotta rumors about the game were spread among its fanbase (like most games back then), one of them being about player characters who acted strangely or people who played the game disappearing but having their account still be active after the disappearance. Turns out, the company behind PhantomMoon was experimenting with new ways of implementing more advanced, realistic AI as to make their games more interactive, and one of the methods they used involved fucking KILLING ACTUAL CHILDREN and FUSING THEIR SOULS INTO THE GAME’S CODE. The strangely behaving player characters and npcs were basically the souls trapped in the game literally crying out for help.

I guess the reason why the game shut down in the first place was because of the spirit’s activity and the company fearing that their little soul capturing scheme would eventually be found out.

I remember at one point during the dream I got to talk to the spirits of the kids trapped in the game, and they were actually pretty friendly. I ended up telling them I was gonna share their story once I woke up and they seemed pretty excited about it. So that’s basically why I’m typing this rn.

Ngl this would make for a cool plot for like an ARG or something. I know there’s this one ARG called Teeny Toys on yt that delves into a similar haunted MMO-type theme. Honestly if I knew anything about how to make one, I’d do it right now! (One of the ghost kids said she loved puzzles so I’m sure they’d be happy if I did that lol)
