‘Neither is, Nor Ever Was’ by @constantfollower on @shimmydiscofficial This album came packaged in with my @joyfulnoiserecs monthly box, and upon listening I’m sure glad it did!! 🙌🙌 This one is giving me @theduncansheik ‘Phantom Moon’ vibes (which is a personal favorite of mine; Stephen give it a listen if you haven’t!).. quiet and reflective but with an ethereal intensity 🔥🔥 From the Shimmy Disc site: “Written following 10 years of isolation on the West Coast of Scotland; re-learning to write and play guitar following a violent gang attack in Glasgow that left McAll with a devastating head injury, semi-paralysed, and with all previous memories gone.” What’s on your turntable today? J Dilla; the producers producer! This is ‘Donuts’, his final offering while he was alive. If you haven’t heard this one, go listen to a piece of history! Be warned; it may be a bit of a complicated listen, but stick it out and you will be rewarded! There’s so much backstory to this album, I’ll just give you the bullet points and you can read about it more: •It was recorded in a hospital while he was sick with a blood disease as well as Lupus •Album was released Feb 7 2006, on his bday; he died three days later •Considered to be one of the finest contributions to instrumental hip hop •’Donuts’ are what we call 45’s or 7inch records If you’ve heard this one let me know in the comments, and if not let me know what you think after listening! A little cassette love! Tag a cassette loving friend! This is part of a haul from an estate sale that @rockstar.kristin and I went to yesterday. Unfortunately the owner and his brother lost a battle with Covid 😔 These are mostly blank cassettes with albums recorded onto them, and some other prerecorded albums as well 📼 And the case itself they came in is pretty sweet as well! It’s a clamshell type case with these metal rods to hold everything in place, and then an elastic band allows access to the tapes. Weird flex on the design but I like it!
