Of course I do. I’ve had years alone here and I could hardly ever part with it.

Give me my candles, my cavernous space, my piano, my writing things, props and food, and I will never leave. I don’t need to. It’s why I’d bring Christine here instead of trying to sneak out too much to find her. So we can nest together like fledgling birds who also like opera.

A while ago I read about autistic people and nesting somewhere & I think we don't talk about that enough. Apparently, a lot of autistic people like nesting. I love nesting. I carefully choose a space to build my nest and I bring all my little trinkets there. I surround myself with everything I love and everything I could possibly need in the next few hours- my water bottle, a snack, my weighted blanket, my soft blanket, hand creme, my headphones, my charger, my favorite stuffed animals- so I don't have to leave the nest to get anything. It makes me feel save and calm and like everything is gonna be ok. This is a nesting appreciation post. Any other autistics who love a good nest?

I tried to make a case for myself not having a mask kink once and my friend immediately turns to me and goes "I'm sorry -- Phantom of the Opera? The Mandalorian? IRON MAN?!" and I had to concede her point in defeat.

Ah well, the things we discover about ourselves :)

taking off a mask to reveal what lies beneath as a romantic gesture is overdone, and besides i want to see the romantic or even platonic potential of protecting someone's identity beneath the mask, without any expectation of ever being allowed to see what's under it. picking it up and holding it gently to their face when it's knocked off and they're in danger of being exposed, without trying to catch a glimpse of what they "really" look like under there. throwing yourself in front of them to hide them from view while they put themselves back together without taking advantage or looking back to see what you're protecting. learning to read them by body language, tone of voice, and behaviour so well that you never need to see their face to feel like you know and understand them.
