A random headcanon: gem wise they weren’t even given the option to look after the jellyfish thanks to their short attention span and thought they’d die in their care. human au wise they have/had high grades cause they can remember well, just the short attention span has em forget things often and everyone calls em a dumbass -i mean they recited that whole thing sensei told em in the first chapter, i highly doubt their that stupid, they just have a bit of bad tunnel vision for stuff and’re lazy.- General Opinion over said character: their okay, i don’t really share the whole big ass love for em like the fandom does. i do agree with one thing tho bout phos, i’m tired and want sensei to pray already too damnit. also appearance wise: genki phos is nice, winter phos is cool but the short hair makes it hard for me to tell if their peridot or not sometimes, laphos’s long hair is awesome and bowl cut look is just...meh. same with the lunarian outfit that matches it it’s meh. otherwise their alright i guess.

Crystal Gem Gardening

I’ve had this in my head since watching “Back to the Kindergarten,” and finally wrote it out as a birthday gift to myself.

After the Kindergarten gardening fiasco, Amethyst kept brainstorming places Peridot could put her green thumb to work. It was around the time that Steven's trip to check up on Lars entered hour 12 that she came up with what she felt was a genius idea: the garden around Rose's fountain. It needed major care-taking from both a gardener and a technician, plenty of work for the green bean who happened to be both. Plus if something were to happen to Steven again they would need the fountain. Next time someone got cracked, well, there might not be time to fight the garden if Homeworld forces were on their tails.

Amethyst was actually surprised that this line of thought was enough to convince Pearl. Garnet being on her side probably helped. The way Peridot's face lit up at the sight of the place made Amethyst's gem tingle.

It wasn't as overgrown as it had been, but the brambles had started to turn a bit wild again. It took Peridot about five minutes to realize that they were actively shying away from the pruning shears she had brought. Amethyst had forgotten to mention that they were basically Pumpkin's cousins. Being cared for by Rose Quartz tended to do that over time it seemed. With that in mind, it quickly became apparent that they mostly just wanted her to come and visit, and she spent the next few days mostly focusing on improving the fountain's systems.

Peridot was a bit disappointed that what had looked like months of work had turned out to only take a week, but as she looked out over the garden, a thought occurred to her. The only plants here were roses, now happy producing big, pink blooms. So much around the Crystal Gems felt like shrines, small and large, to Rose Quartz. It was a touch morbid, if she was being totally honest. Roses were still important, of course, Steven certainly wasn't that Rose Quartz, but he was a Rose Quartz after all, at least in part. Still, why not represent the rest of the team?

The next day she brought in sunflowers and did a pH test. She smiled at the result. The hydrangeas she had selected would bloom purple here. When she brought them, she was pleased to see that the roses hadn't attacked the sunflowers and seemed open to more newcomers.

It was halfway through day 3 of the project when Pearl showed up and was two minutes into a speech about desecrating Rose's memory when the sight of the gladiolus verity Peridot had brought in that day, its sword-like leaves surrounding an aggressive spike of delicate-looking white blooms, stopped her short as her mind filled in the blanks of what Steven had been poorly explaining to her that morning. Nearby was a tall amaryllis topped with a cluster of deep red flowers, destined to be surrounded by a bed of bluebells and peppery red nasturtiums.

In opposite corners of the garden, Peridot planted two verities that she hoped to transfer somewhere more visible in the future. One was a tulip, its deep blue petals shaped to hide the flowers' hearts from easy view, even at full bloom. The other was a day lily with big, showy orange petals striped with red. Most flowers that impressive-looking needed either a very particular environment or a gardener willing to put in a great deal of work to make up the difference, but this one was impressively hardy, known for thriving in neglect. Peridot had to keep reminding herself that, just because something can look after itself, it will still benefit from being cared for now and then.

She also tucked lavender into many nooks and crannies around the place, just because they made her smile. If anyone ever asked her about it, she would say that the smell complemented the roses.

Amethyst Character Analysis

Amethyst loves adventure and fun in a big way. She enjoys doing things just because she can and acting ridiculous in a fun way. She is loyal and cares a great deal for her friends.

A large part of Amethyst is how guilty and inadequate she feels for things that she has no control over, and no one helped her for years. Her problems originate with being a gem that isn’t properly formed and being a byproduct of the homeworld invasion. Another factor is Pearl and Garnet don’t always act the most supportive, often driving her to act out.

Amethyst could tell the other crystal gems hated the kindergarten but Garnet and Pearl never take time for years to help her understand she isn’t to blame for everything that went down on earth that she isn’t hated. The other Crystal Gems also never explained all of the Gem histories to her leaving her slightly in the dark about everything. She understands the Basics of how things in Gem culture work but doesn’t really get the severity or level of everything that went down.

She knew she was part of the pain on earth and struggled to understand her place making her be deeply insecure and confused. After meeting Peridot and Jasper she becomes more confused knowing she is a malformed Gem. She does enjoy Peridot's company a lot though and helps her be able to adjust to life on earth, they still run into some problems with communication and world view but end up being good together. Jasper is someone Amethyst wants to beat to prove she is good enough but also wants to consider family even calling her Sis. 

Amethyst is also very much a child compared to the other crystal gems. In a story for Steven and other stories in the past, we see that her being the youngest does make a difference. Even if gems don’t age like humans but Amethyst did “grow up��� with the other Crystal Gems as her family and her connection to Gem society. They gave her a purpose in protecting the earth but unlike most Gems, she wasn’t sworn to any diamond (at least in the way the others are) or trained to be a typical amethyst allowed to have more of her own interests and needs. In many ways, she was as much of earth as she was as a Gem. Besides Rose, she had the strongest friendship with Greg and then was friends with Vidalia. She enjoys more human activities, food and culture along with her gem Heritage. 

 I think losing Rose would be like losing a mother more than anything else. Her relationship with Steven is also more like siblings or an aunt maybe then at all like a mother figure like Garnet and Pearl. She respects Garnet a lot and generally listens to her especially in dangerous situations or involving Steven. Pearl and she disagree on pretty much everything while they are both struggling a lot with self-identity and worth they handle it pretty opposite ways. Starting out they are often rude they become closer over time and come around to respect each other quite a bit. Learning to trust each other and enjoy time together without fighting all the time.

Her identity only really starts to form more solidly and be more positive after meeting “Famethyst” we see she feels less alone and can start to see other gems like her. She even ends up being in  Steven’s eyes the most mature gem but in reality, she is the only gem who has really heald at all from her older insecurities and process the newer trauma. Garnet and Pearl haven't ben able to as much yet and were more affected by the lies Rose told and interactions with Homeworld.

Amethyst is often the most down to earth especially as she grows up. Has the most comedy to her character and can go with the flow without the control issues Pearl and Garnet have. Amethyst is someone who is able to get through a lot and work on her struggles and it is admirable. Her ability to go with the flow makes her one of the more fun and enjoyable characters.

BPD:

Unstable self-view. She changes her clothes more than any other gem, she shape-shifts a lot. The way she shows her physical form is a very visual depiction of an unstable sense of self.

She tends to jump back and forth in things she likes 

She has less commitment to the idea of being a “crystal Gem” than Pearl or Garnet. This makes sense as she never fought in the war.
