I love the lineup of Elvira pinball machines, and this one is in the first of the features just because I think it fits the Halloween criteria a bit more.

Hey Ghouls!
Tonight, I'd like to cover The Vampira Show! This was a late night "horror movie" show hosted by Vampira; a character created by and played by Maila Nurmi. Stated as the "Original Glamour Ghoul" by IMDB, I think Vampira will be a good beginning to a potential gothic pop-culture analysis and history series!
In the future I want to talk about many pieces of media and important people withing gothic history, such as but not limited to Dracula and Bela Lugosi, The Elvira Show and Elvira/Cassandra Peterson, The Addams Family and cast, and many more!
The Vampira Show aired exclusively in Los Angeles on KABC-TV from 1954-1955, and the episodes are considered pieces of lost media. I was able to get a hold of clips of Vampira on Vimeo, and I totally recommend checking those out if you can!
Each episode featured what I can only assume to be low-brow horror movies, which were introduced by Vampira. 50 episodes in total were aired on The Vampira Show.
The Vampira character, was a slender, sexy vampyress, with and iconic gothic style; black hair, tight dress, the works. Nurmi achieved her exaggerated figure by using a tight corset underneath her dress, which gave her a near-death look. The character had the classic 1950s charm, fitting for the time period, but took on a spooky, horror-loving personality.
Vampira also was featured alongside Bela Lugosi in Plan 9 From Outer Space (1957) and made a reappearance alongside Lugosi again in an episode of The Red Skeleton Show, in an episode called Dial 'B' for Brush (1958), where she played "Professor Lugosi's Sister".
Both of these are available on Amazon Video for like 99 cents, or on Freevee for, well free.
IMDB has the trailer for Plan 9 From Outerspace, and I urge anyone interested to check it out! I haven't seen it yet, but I hope to soon!
Vampira is an iconic piece of goth history, and is the predecessor to the beloved Elvira, played by Cassandra Peterson. Nurmi attempted to sue KABC for piracy over the new character host:
" 'There is no Elvira. There’s only a pirated Vampira,' she said. 'Cassandra Peterson slavishly copied my product and made a fortune. America has been duped.' " (Adelman).
Whether you agree with this accusation or not, it doesn't demote Vampira from being a huge influence for future gothic media.

ohhhh 18, 9, and 2 for your Steve and Eddie (any verse you'd like
interrogate me about my characters
you are FEEEDING MEEEEE i'm sorry this took me like a couple of days my brain had to power back up after the weekend
2. THEIR EMOTIONAL/MORAL WEAK SPOTS
hellfire & ice/sequel!eddie starts off as your garden variety drug dealer and progressively adds a couple more tools in his criminal belt as the years go on and honestly? doesn't really see that much of a boohoo about it. yes, it's what the world expects from all munsons, yes, it's bad bad work for bad bad men but eddie can't see himself working a straight job. ever. he's not equipped for it. and, he's made peace with the fact that he'll never be a rockstar (jk no the fuck he has not he's so bitter) so he's all, might as well make the wasted years i have on this stupid earth a little more interesting. he's got a little bit of a robin hood complex going on once we meet him in his late 20s.
clear cut!steve is also a criminal albeit the smoother kind, and kind of works off a similar thing of i've never been good at anything else, so this might as well be my career. except for steve, it's banking on how far he can get with that tireless, bottomless, all-consuming harrington charm. working in insurance, or whatever the fuck his father did, never quite scratched the itch of bold faced robbery that... well, robbery did. it's funny, though. steve's never had the aspirations towards grandeur that his fellow thieves have had, because he knows what it's like to grow up in a cushy rich household. steve's just doing it for the thrill of fooling everybody. and he is, by the way. fooling everybody. even you. remember that.
9. HUMILIATING MEMORIES
hellfire and ice!eddie, like.... do you mean his entire life up to this point and actually, beyond. he once got so unbelievably fucking stoned that he thought calling a phone sex line was a good idea but then once the sexy operator lady picked up, he got so freaked out that he could only talk in fozzie bear voice and he couldn't drop the bit for 20 minutes. fun conversation with wayne about that phone bill. he's also written so much bad poetry, so many embarrassing near-self insert stories (one of us, one of us) where he romances many a comely elfin lady. he once slipped one of these stories into chess club captain martha peterson's locker in freshman year as, like, an effort at wooing her but then he got pulled into the fucking guidance counselor's office because she said he was stalking him.
old hollywood!steve... again. regrets. humiliations. he has a few. one could be punching bela lugosi out after a stage production of dracula because he thought he was a real vampire (drunk). another could be punching out an extra on the set of the merry widow in 1925 because he was sniffing around mae murray, who steve was also sniffing around at the time (jilted). steve was replaced by 'that rodent-voiced bastard john gilbert' and the extra he clocked? none other than clark gable. among other embarrassments; not securing a finalized divorce from his first wife before he married his second (drunk), the time he fully pissed his pants when buster keaton played a prank on him during a seance (stoned), getting caught wailing for a second chance outside joan crawford's room at the garden of alla hotel (that woman was inside having lesbian sex).
18. THINGS THEY'LL NEVER ADMIT
old hollywood!eddie knows his entire career is based on fluke, but he's too embarrassed to nurture his real talent, which is writing. to be honest, he does stunts because he kind of has a death wish. not being able to express himself was killing him, but he was always too full of piss and vinegar and cowardice to kill himself. but now people see him, or what the studios have made of him, and it's glorious and horrifying and naked and fake and full of possibility that he's too scared to touch.
hellfire & ice/burning up & burning out!steve (moreso sequel relevant, but) has always thought lacy was a fucking weirdo honestly and blames lacy for nancy pulling away from him during his senior year, not like nancy becoming a person was a factor or anything... until they're older and steve and lacy grow increasingly fond of each other. he wishes he took the job that his dad laid out for him on a silver platter sometimes and married someone stable, like tina or whoever. steve's increasingly more anxious socially as he ages, knowing that most people see him as some kind of joke, but he has to put on the face and be the guy, whatever that means to him in 1994. he's terrified that he's built his life around constructs that are flimsy; being independent from his family, following a path when he's not sure of himself as a person, desperately trying to make the thing with nancy work when she's there because he's familiar and he's there because he's afraid.

Their timing had been more than perfect, deciding to be a vampire and a thrall from one of the various novels Oliver had picked up. ‘Dracula’ had just been turned into a film, days before the production company Marc worked at had their Halloween party. Despite the films changes, Oliver had insisted on staying accurate to the book with his costume. His partner had gone to the costuming department, less than keen of being an ancient demon with the face of a rotten onion. A corset was tied tightly around his dress shirt, the fake fangs discarded so he can continue talking a mile a minute.
“..and then there’s Mr. Peterson, he’s the one looking like a polished boot. Do not mention the inaccuracies, he nearly shot Susan when she mentioned that Harker was the main character through the letters.” Starting to button up Oliver’s outfit, another wicked thought goes through his mind. It wasn’t a traditionally sexy outfit with three layers of clothing that better fit Oliver’s class than Marc’s. It’s because it’s him wearing it, slightly disheveled because they weren’t finished yet. “Wait, this isn’t the right coat. I’ll find you the actual overcoat. Can you just hold..just hold still?”
With the patience of saint, Oliver doesn’t question it as he steps back, still as a mannequin for his partner to dress up. “We’ll be late if we keep changing out my outfits. Sweetheart, I’m sure no one will..” Marc’s moved to his knees, hands now grasping the loops of his belt and starting to whine. “You’re too pretty Ollie, can I please?” Playing as dirty as possible, he pushes his mouth along the outside of his pants. Kissing and starting to drool so Oliver has to start undressing to save his clothes.
“Someone has to scream tonight, right?” He gleefully chimes, watching Oliver undress in front of him.
“And it’s going to be you after this party.”

6 13 and 14!!
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
dracula... couldn't keep up with the emails >_< I was gonna read the book in its intended order after and everything, maybe in the future
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY, ok like I did hear it was bad before reading but I wanted to see for myself and... it really did handle depression so shallowly it's so frustrating
just ella by margaret peterson haddix is supposed to be a more realistic retelling of cinderella but it was just stupid edgy I think and the love interests had no chemistry, they weirdly had conversations offscreen a lot
and the semplica diaries is a short story I first read for a class years ago and I still hate it, the writing style is frustrating to read and criticizing the aspirations of wealth of the middle class by having the family literally own woc as decorations was just so hamfisted and kind of weird for a white man to write
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
our wives under the sea by julia armfield! I'm very close to being done and I'm so obsessed with it, it's just like written so skillfully
also all the missing girls by megan miranda just because I've been stuck on that one for too long, I need to finish it already
