…😶..ah, memories…I can’t believe Pete died, it’s been so long now. I really should catch up with Karla and see how their son is doing. I’m the worst friend in existence.

#againstthegrain was either my first or second catalogue themed of course on #allenginsberg #howl . It catalogued part of the #alanclodd collection of modern lit and poetry including a wondrous association copy of the great @citylightsbooks volume in the #pocketpoets series signed and inscribed to #peterrussell . Here, rather sadly, is the copy I gave to #juliomariosantodomingo and from which he bought vigorously. I just found this picture in my drive but not the catalogue itself. What I learned from JJ Abrahms' Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness (2013)
Yesterday I attended an event at Neon Venus theatre on Melrose Ave, where for $5 I got to sit with the script doctor Peter Russell and his fantastic wife, Cecilia. I won’t forget meeting them; the are both script doctors and adored each other. Together, we analysed the Star Trek movies to elucidate some truisms on writing Sci Fi movies.
To attend future events, visit: http://www.meetup.com/Filmmaking-and-Screenings-in-Hollywood/events/144792232/?_af_eid=144792232&a=uc1_vm&_af=event
ABOUT PETER RUSSELL: Peter Russell is a master story teacher and script doctor who has helped shape film story for Brian Grazier and Ron Howard at IMAGINE “Einstein Project”, Alex Schwartz and Cary Granat at WALDEN FILMS “Chronicles of Narnia”, Sunta Izzicupo at CBS Television Movies of the Week, as well as PARTICIPANT MEDIA, “Ocean Warrior”, VIACOM, and many others.
Peter’s energy, entertaining style and true passion for his subject won him UCLA’s Teacher of the Year in 2009.
In 2009, Peter created HOW MOVIES WORK a film school that now teaches film classes all over the world, as well as in classrooms in Venice and Beverly Hills, California. Recently HMW has begun to offer movie classes online as well, at howmovieswork.com. Screenwriters who have graduated from HMW include Vladimir Nagorney and Hal Oszan, both of whom credit HMW for helping them sell screenplays to major producers here in LA and to international studios in 2012.
Peter’s book HOW MOVIES WORK, is coming out in 2013 on Focal Press.
In Peter’s earlier career as a script reader he read over 5,000 scripts for the studios and developed a set of tools based on the patterns that he saw in the very best of these stories. Peter’s seminars have become legendary because he teaches using these original tools — and believes that the best way to teach them is to show how the greatest contemporary moviemakers use them. Peter’s classes use many clips from recent hit movies to illustrate his points. The proof, he believes, is in the pudding — and showing students how the patterns he’s discovered actually work in movies like
DJANGO UNCHAINED and INCEPTION, in SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and ONCE, are the best way to drive home his lessons.
In fact, there is nothing Peter loves more than showing aspiring movie story makers just how hit movies work. It’s his true passion. In his classes, people tell always tell him “I finally get it!” His students take the same class two or three or four times. His lectures get read, and re-read, viewed and re-viewed, time after time. Because they work. Because the patterns he shows his students help them make original stories.
There’s no higher compliment Peter could receive than that. He loves his work!
And making his students love their own work, and up their own storytelling game, is his ultimate pleasure.
HOW THE EVENT WAS ADVERTISED: “Those who love science fiction can’t get enough of it. Whole industries have been based on science fiction stories. Languages have been created. Worlds have been built. There’s no doubt if you love this genre, you can have a career if you can capture the hearts and minds of a science fiction fan audience. This week, we’ll talk about some of the rules of science fiction, including some J.J. Abrams Star Trek clips, among others. We’ll also show you the fantastic tool of sequencing too. Sequencing is the art of telling mini-stories within the larger story. It can change the way you write.
As always we’ll also have a log line and concept quickie workshop session too with Cecilia Russell who can show you how to take a nothing idea and work it into magic.”
WHAT I LEARNED FROM PETER RUSSELL IN OUR ANALYSIS OF SCI FI MOVIES:
—- Sequencing is a magical tool.
Learn it, understand it. It’d pretty simple. We watched the opening few sequences of JJ Abrahms Star Trek, and the concept was immediately elucidated. Peter said that like tapas, the short stories (7 to 12) that make up your movie make for a tastier dinner. He explained that the movie should be made of these clear 7 to 12 mini stories each with a beginning, middle, end and clear hero. This doesn’t have to be the hero of the movie. Once you grasp this, you realise all great movies do this. Really think about the opening of Star Trek. The first 3 sequences are:
(1) Captain Kirks dad’s ship is attacked by the Romulans (2) His Captain is called onboard - we know he won’t be returning (3) He is forced to take command of the ship on a moments notice (4) He has to sacrifice himself to save not only his crew but his pregnant wife (5) she gives birth ON THE ESCAPE POD (6) he heard the baby cry and they choose a name (7) he dies and a legend is born
…. All before the opening credits. I finally understand that satisfied feeling I get with epic movies like this one. They give you mini stories - mini orgasms as Peter liked to analogise.
—— Why did Star Trek Into Darkness fail? The villain sucked.
Alway start with the villain. He must always be winning, APART FROM the end of act 1, end of act 2 and end of act 3, where our hero prevails. You must BE CLEAR on what the villain wants. In the first Star Trek, Nero wants to exact revenge on Spock. In the second one, who knows what the fuck Khan wanted?!?
—— The hero is the character who changes the most.
Say it again. Yes. The hero of ST1 was actually Spock. If you’re toying with multiple protagonists, this is invaluable advice.
—- The difference in Sci Fi and Fantasy
In Sci Fi, SCIENCE gets you into the problem and out of the problem.
In fantasy, FAITH AND MAGIC get you into the problem and out of the problem.
WHAT I LEARNED THAT DIRECTLY HELPED MY WORK: - The distinction between sci-fi and fantasy helped me realise that my first screenplay is actually the latter and as it’s not sci-fi, I should stop trying to come up with a clever science based solution to their problems. - audience satisfaction. I told the presenter of my predicament; I have a body swapping story but I don’t want to reveal to the audience why the pair swaps. Cedilla advised that this is fine - as long as the theme is actualised and very very clear. This is exactly what I need to work on. - protagonist or not? I realised my second protagonist is actually my first. What a fucking revelation. This changes the entire screenplay.
See you there next Sunday!
