Words: Fata Morgana
A Fata Morgana is an unusual and complex form of superior mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon.
It is an Italian phrase derived from the vulgar Latin for "fairy" and the Arthurian sorceress Morgan le Fay, from a belief that these mirages, often seen in the Strait of Messina, were fairy castles in the air or false land created by her witchcraft to lure sailors to their death.
Although the term Fata Morgana is sometimes incorrectly applied to other, more common kinds of mirages, the true Fata Morgana is not the same as an ordinary superior mirage, nor is it the same as an inferior mirage.
From Margaret Atwood's "Stone Mattress":
Once the talks are over, Verna goes out on deck. The sky is clear, with a flight of lenticular clouds hovering in it like spaceships; the air is warm; the sea is aqua. There’s a classic iceberg on the port side, with a center so blue it looks dyed, and ahead of them is a mirage—a fata morgana, towering like an ice castle on the horizon, completely real except for the faint shimmering at its edges. Sailors have been lured to their deaths by those; they’ve drawn mountains on maps where no mountains were.

Quickie on: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Directed by Ben Stiller.
I caught this preview at ArcLight of Stiller’s new movie set for release at the end of this year.
As with Gravity, this is a visual experience you’ll never forget. It was a majestic, exciting and oftentimes hilarious version of “Into the Wild”. The first two acts are very unique and stylistically pleasing. The audience was with him from the get go and loved Kristen Wigg immediately. It was a fun story and you’re so entrenched in the adventure that you’ll scream and shout and jeer and cheer with him. You don’t realise until almost the third act that here is another Heros Journey narrative, which is an excellent feat to achieve.
However, when it does suddenly dawn on you, the stylistic devices start to turn a little cold. Twice the hero is urged into action by some impending event, which felt farsical and too convenient but then you took everything in this movie with a pinch of salt because of the way it was filmed. And it’s a fantasy.
The third act is sluggish. There are lame bits of dialogue about being in a moment instead of taking endless photos. Sean Penn annoyed me in this. The finale events were a little higgledy and it felt like they were trying to mix it up one more time before the obvious resolution of all the mini subplots and relationships. Having said that, the final moment was pretty nice and leaves you with a warm feeling.
I love Wigg and Patton Oswalt and they were both great. Either Adam Scott’s character was just bleugh or he was a bit shit. All his scenes felt like drama improv class. Again, it was probably because ofthe fantastical feel of the movie and the fact that he was supposed to be your standard asshole boss amongst this excitement, but he irked me several times.
Verdict: yes, it’s yet another Heros Journey but it has Ben Stiller in it and it’s funny and occasionally moving and always a delight to watch. Go see it when it’s out for Christmas!

Quickie on: Gravity (2013)
Directed and written by Alfonso Cuaron.
Alfonso Cuaron and his son co-wrote this trailblazer. I’m a little bitter because the screenplay I’m writing is very similar and now there’ll be a surge in reinventing sci fi movies which is good in terms of selling but potentially bad in term of competition. ANYWAY.
Yes, it was very clever of them to make such a movie knowing people would be compelled to pay the big bucks to see it on IMAX or 3D. In fact, speak to anyone who has seen it and they’ll chirp “but you MUST see it in 3D”, and they are right. It’s not overused but it is a perfect example of where it is enjoyable.
The pace of the movie is like this: OMGOMGOMGOMG FUCK SHIT BOLLOCKS. Floating. Slow suffocation. She’s okay though. OMGOMBOMG OH FUCK FUCK FUCK NOOOOOOOOO! Oh. Oh god. Really? Phewph. Ow no! Is she going to die right now? Wait there’s a fire? In… SPACE OH FUCK OH FUCK OH SHIT THE DEBRIS IS BACK.
It’s a roller coaster. It’s beautiful and achieves its aims of making you really feel like you’re Sanda Bullock and grabbing you by the balls every two minutes, pinching the fuck out of you and then letting you float a little.
A few things I didn’t like. One, the plot was pretty stupid. It’s a primal story in which shit fucked up and Bullock is all alone and needs to get home. The only problem is she’s pretty suicidal and she has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to go back to on Earth. She shouldn’t be compelled to even try. That sounds stupid because of course any human being in life or death situations is going to try their utmost to survive but this is a cold, sad woman and I just kept thinking “why is she even bothering?”. It sounds silly just typing it but when you watch her, that’s how you feel. The main pain point they gave her ((((SPOILER ALERT)))) was that her daughter died really young which I think was the wrong thing to do. She should have atleast had a husband or a mom or something to go back to.
Verdict: Gravity will battle hard with 12 Years at the Oscars and my vote will be with the former. Truly visionary, this was an EXPERIENCE and was beautiful and gives you vertigo but the story and character was not compelling and the pacing became repetitive with the use of the whooshing-to-shut sound effect used over 5 times. Worth a watch.
