So I’ve read a couple little house and all the Anne books. There’s a stark difference in how they’re written, at least for the first of each series. Little house seems to be a lot more moralistic (you must obey or else you get punished and there is no doubt you deserve that punishment, 6 year old) and when Laura’s not getting punished, everything is going absolutely great.

The Anne books are written much more for children (at least for the first couple ones, after like 3 I’m pretty sure l.m just liked Anne too much to stop writing about her). They’re about her hijinks, and when she’s punished it’s never really painted as the necessary. Most of the aogg book is marrilla shaking her head at what Anne’s done this time. But Anne very rarely gets punished, and that’s so much more kid friendly. The Anne books treat her like a person who’s learning to person, not like some little Angel who occasionally decides that her entire family should just get screwed.

Kids don’t generally wanna read about Laura breaking the sabbath to go sledding and getting hit for that. That’s something a lot of kids would do, because they’re kids. They wouldn’t understand why laura basically ever needed to get punished. And if they are old enough to recognize what she’s done wrong, they also know that it’s unfair to punish her for something she didn’t know was wrong. Kids wanna read about Anne getting Diana drunk on accident, because that’s funny and she doesn’t get punished for it, at least not by someone painted as the person in charge who can do no wrong.

Also one of the little house books mentions a girl getting married at 13? And it’s not treated as anything concerning? Despite people viewing marriage as a survival tactic for a long time, and 13 year olds marrying is so obviously not good for their health that people have known it forever.

little house is an autobiography of sorts, so it’s more of an adult looking back at her childhood and writing about it as it was, with a adults thought process on the events and writing them in a child friendly way, while as far as i’m aware Anne is just fictional and is definitely more child friendly as you said

though while my mom loved the little house books i never really liked them i found them boring pretty much for the reasons you pointed out, also no one was like dying, orphaned, or solving mysteries. i really did enjoy Anne and the Mandy books which where similar in nature. so you are definitely right on which one kids would enjoy more

as for the marriage thing, historical books tend to be like that especially the older ones, also it hasn’t been forever it’s only been about 60 years if not less, (i’ve heard lots of stories about grandparents getting married when the grandma was 14-16) and Laura Ingalls Wilder been dead for about that long.

thinking about:

Oksana waiting in the bathtub while Eve fetches a surprise for her and it's new bath toys and a new super soft bathrobe with bunny ears.

Oksana waiting in the car with her stuffies while Eve does a quick shop at the local store.

Eve and Villanelle at a Christmas market. Villanelle wanders off on her own for 5 minutes and Oksana comes back holding a snow globe she is absolutely fascinated by, only for Eve to realise Oksana didn't pay for it so they have to go back and pay it. The snow globe maker smiles at them and is understanding. They give Oksana a little something special: a reindeer headband, which she wears the rest of the time they're at the market.

Oksana and Eve doing a drive-by of the houses that are decorated from top to toe. Oksana is mesmerised by the lights, and spots a house that is meant to show Santa climbing the house to 'sneak in.' Eve tells her they have to keep it a secret, Santa is just getting things done earlier this year! Oksana can't wait for her presents from Santa to arrive. She wrote him a list and even said 'please' and 'thank you'!

Eve wakes up on Mother's Day confused because her baby isn't sleeping next to her. She hears quiet footsteps and it's Oksana holding a sippy cup with juice and a flower she picked from the garden. After dropping them off to Eve, Oksana disappears again and comes back with a hand drawn card and a Nutella sandwich. (It would be toast but she's not allowed to use the toaster)

Easter- Eve makes Oksana a little egg treasure hunt. The night before, they watched Peter Rabbit. Though not an Easter film, anything with bunnies are on theme! Eve asks if Oksana knows the Easter bunny because "Aren't you my little bunny? You're always hopping around!"

this is like peak toxic elliot. hysterical but also uncomfortable!!

-elliot stay is what happens when you do communicate (discovering youre into your gf yelling at you to take care of yourself) and nonstay is what happens when you don't communicate (getting relationship advice from peter white)

-the WHOLE arc hes been so restrained, like, can you move in with meeee nooo sorry sorry i asked that im such a jerk!! and then the last second its like. you WILL drink the potion. and then later on he’s like You WILL move in with me. i cant STAND it anymore.

-afterward peters like ohhhhoho making her drink the thing is only delaying the inevitable though BOYS SHE HAD 1 DUTY POINT SHE WOULDVE JUST STAYED ANYWAY!!! 

-on an "alice’s will sneaking around backwards to make things happen to her" level, this was probably her own ambivalence, though.

-WHICH DOES NOT EXCUSE THE SHITTY BUNNY LOVE ADVICE CLUB.

-she describes elliot’s medicine kiss as feeling assaulted and it’s so so so uncomfortable to read. i definitely felt physically bad a little bit as i was reading it. 

-but it feels, yknow, not out of nowhere? it’s like you big idiot you asked PETER for RELATIONSHIP ADVICE. "you have to force kiss your gf" THATS WHAT I THOUGHT YOUD SAY YOU STUPID RABBIT!!!

-its a little bit like. alice looked so firmly away from Elliots Questionable Actions And Traits that it all sprung up at once as soon as the pressure was on. and a lot a bit like qr's coercive quota had to be filled lmfao. but you know

-endless witchery

-babe it’s 202th turn time for your awful vial. (repeats forever)

-really not giving her the credit of even letting her choose

-the longer she stays the more duty points she could accrue theoretically and duty points win over any medicine!! it’s a losing gamble!!

-the wider the pool of characters who also make alice drink the potion mouth to mouth gets the funnier it becomes that julius ends his route by feeding her coffee like that. like she already decided to stay on her own he was just feeling like he missed out. obviously the winner is vivaldi for her incredible "the love between us made the bitter medicine taste like roses" maneuver

-ace isn't in the finale at all because he's on his way he just got lost cmon hes like okay i went to go give julius all the alice/elliot gossip and how she totally turned my dance offer down and now im walking home from the tower im almost there - oh it's over???

please can you reccomend your favourite book of all time?!!

I don't think I have a favorite book of all time... I have a lot of books I've loved that have helped me through things (escapism for the win!) and a lot of books that I have come back to over the years, but I can recommend a few different kinds I've really enjoyed :D

Fantasty:

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkein

Since I was fourteen, I have re-read The Lord of the Rings every year at Christmas. It's a weird tradition I have, and it does not feel like Christmas unless I've read it. I love the melancholy in the story, and how they all strive towards the 'good' even though none of them really believe it'll work. There's an incredible loyalty and hope in that story, and something about fighting even when your own defeat seems inevitable always appealed to me. It made me look at my own situations with a bit more hope and determination. If they could keep striving on, so could I.

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander

This is another favorite of mine <3 If you've seen Disney's "The Black Cauldron" that movie was inspired by the fun series, and had a bit from most of the books in it. It's based off of Welsh mythology, which does not get near enough recognition in the fantasy world. The characters are fun, Eilonwy inspired me so much as a child, and Fflewddur Fflam--a bard with a magical harp that tattles on you when you tell a lie-- was the inspiration for my first D&D character.

Terry Pratchett

Literally anything by Terry is gold. His humor is terrific, his characterizations gold, and his worlds enrapturing. At least to me :)

The Last Unicorn and The Overneath by Peter S. Beagle.

What if a Unicorn suddenly realized it was the only one? What if said unicorn, who has no idea what humans and the world is like, went to see if she could find her family? What if she met a inept magician and fell in love with a prince along the way? A fantastic story that looks at what it is to be human and mortal, through the eyes of an immortal unicorn who has never known regret. The Overneath is a continuation of the story, specifically for Schmedrick, and is tragically less known than it's counter part. Beagle is a master at whimsical melancholy, and those two things go together wonderfully with him.

The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

Presumably, if you're following me, you enjoy Blue Exorcist. This book has demons (called djinn) and the narrator is the sassiest demon to ever exist. His name is Bartimaeus and I adore him. Stroud is fantastic at building scenes and settings, his characters are fun, and you will care so dang much about the snarky demon and enjoy a fun (and surprisingly emotional) adventure. It's a trilogy too, and all the more fun for it.

Horror

The Haunting of Hill House

I adore Shelly Jackson, and I've read most of her published works. She is a queen of unreliable narrators and unsettling atmospheres. This book is of a haunted house, and you're left wondering in the end if the house was truly haunted, or the narrator was. We have always lived in the castle is another excellent read by her. She also does a lot of short stories, and I cannot recommend those enough.

Fiction

The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett

I love flowers and plants, and have filled my home with them. When I was little, I had a little patch in our back yard that I struggled desperately with to grow a few daisies. I used to love to sit out there and read this story and imagine creating my own secret garden. It's a wonderful story of broken people healing broken people. The protagonist is never quite nice, and I love that about her. I love that her rough ways are what allow her to help with the other broken people around her, and that you don't always have to be sweet and gentle to help.

Watership Down by Richard Adams

I have never cried so hard over bunnies. I cannot sing enough praises to the world building in this story. The characters are real, but they feel like rabbits. And you will marvel at how much you will care about each of these creatures, and how hearing that a rabbit stopped running will completely gut you.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Steinbeck just wows me with this book. How he manages to take two simple ideas--Cain and Abel and the good brother verse the cursed brother -- and Timshel. The idea that if thou mayest, thou mayest not. (aka, if you can do something good, you can also do something bad. The choice is entirely yours not God's.) It's an incredible work following a family line and studying brothers through generations as they struggle through the familiar story.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

First, I have never seen a film version of this story, because I so adore the book and I know I would make a miserable partner to watch it with xD I have seven different versions of this books around my house, and I reread it every year. It was the first long book I read on my own, and I adore the sisters in it. I had never read a character quite like Jo, and it was amazing to me that there was a young tomboy who got angry, wasn't as pretty as her sisters, loved to make up stories, and wanted to do something incredible that no one could quite understand. I adore this story, even if the part with Beth breaks my heart every time.

I made a slightly condensed version of my Spooky Ref list; it still has a heck ton of movies and books, but now I combined certain categories, eliminated a few, and removed some of the titles that don’t quite fit. If you are looking for things to watch or read so you can get into the Halloween mood (or of you just like some creepy content), here you go!

Chapter 4

It had been a few days since Eden left Sids after they raped her.    She called out sick from work she couldn't face them.    The team was headed out to California and Eden asked if she could fly out and meet the team there.    They said that was fine.     Eden went out a day early and did some sight seeing.       It was nice.     The team arrived later that day.     She had just gotten finished eating when there was a knock at the door.    Eden goes and sees it was Sid.

"Eden please open the door." Sid says.

He had carnations her favorite in his hands and a stuffed Panda bear too.   Eden figured she might as well hear him out.    She opens the door.  

"What Sid?" Eden says.

"I am sorry for what I did to you the other day." Sid says.

"Oh you mean raping me when I said no." Eden replies snarky.

"Yes I am sorry baby.   It will never happen again.     Kris is sorry too these are from us." Sid says.

"Look let's just let by gones be bygones.   I  won't say anything about what happened.   I won't tell your secret." Eden says.

"Please baby.    Think about it.    We really do love you." Sid says.

"Okay I will think about it okay." Eden says.

"Good baby.    We love you and don't want to loose you." Sid says.

"I will think about it okay.   Now I just want to go lie down.   I am not feeling well." Eden says.

"Okay feel better." Sid says kissing her softly on the lips.

"Thanks Sid.   Goodnight I will see you at practice tomorrow." Eden replies.

"Okay baby." Sid says kissing her head.

Eden took the flowers and Panda and shut the door behind him.    She wasn't thinking about anything she was walking out of this and going to be with Chase.  

That was when her phone went off. It was Chase.

"Meet me down in the lobby." Chase texts.

"Wait you're here!" Eden texts back.

"Yup got a race here in Cali and then racing Phoenix and Vegas." Chase says.

"Let me change and I'll be right down." Eden says.

She throws on a pair of jeans and a black be brave shirt.    She then heads down to the lobby.

Chase was standing there waiting for her. She runs to him.

"Chase." Eden exclaims practically jumping on him.

"Hey princess." Chase says kissing her.

Eden kisses back not caring who was watching.

"I'm so happy you are here." Eden says.

"I am happy too I get too see my girl. Now let's go I have a special date planned just the two of us." Chase says.

They link hands and head out to them rental car. They both get in. Chase takes off towards San Diego.

"Where are we going?" Eden asks.

"You will see." Chase says smiling at her.

45 minutes later they arrive at the zoo.

"The San Diego Zoo!" Eden  says excitedly.

'Well I know how much you love animals especially pandas so I figured I needed to bring you." Chase  says.

They park. They then head to the entrance. Chase  pays for them them. They find out there was a bus called the Kangaroo Bus that would drop them off at various parts of the park. They get on the bus and it takes them to the first part of the zoo. The Australian Outback. Inside there they see the Australian Wander which was full of plants that come from down under, along with Camels, Koalas. Laughing Kookabura's, Tasmanian Devils and Wombats.

It was fun. They got to hold a koala, play with a kangaroo and ride a camel together.

Eden was taking all kinds of pictures.

From there they head into the Lost Forest exhibit,. There they see Bog Garden, Bonabo's , Fern Canyon, Flamingos, Ginger Garden, harpy eagels, Hawaiian pants, Hippo's, Mandrills, Monkey's, Okapi's, orangutans, Otter's and pygmy Hippos pygmy marmosets, Tapirs, terrace lagoon, and Tigers.

"I want a hippo for Christmas is one of my favorite Xmas songs so I love hippos." Eden says.

"They are intriguing animals." Chase says.

They continue on. They were holding hands and acting like a real couple and Eden was loving it. They then get on the Kangaroo bus and head to the nest spot for them. They then do the Panda Canyon, where they see Amur Leopard's, Giant Panda's red pandas and Takins.

"Pandas are my absolute favorite animal in the whole wide world." Eden says.

"I know now come with me." Chase says.

They head behind the habitat where they met a zookeeper. Chase paid extra for them to be able to play with one of the panda's. It was one of the Cubs born not that long ago. Also Eden was adopting it and could name it. Eden was having the time of her life. Chase had them take picture and a video. She ended up naming the bear Chase. Finally they leave.

"Thank you for doing that for me. I love it." Eden says.

"I am glad baby." Chase says.

That was when Eden ran to the trash can and threw up. Chase held her hair back. He also got her ginger Ale.

"Do you want to go home?" Chase asks.

"Nope I'm okay now." Eden says.

They then head to the Africa Rocks where they got to see and play with the penguins.

They head around the zoo seeing more different animals. They saved the best for last where Eden  got to see the polar bears another one of her favorites. It was neat to see them out playing. Eden  took more pictures.    Finally they headed to the gift shop and Eden got a few things. Chase got her a few things as well and they left.

"Thank you Clyde for a much needed fun day." Eden says.

"You are welcome Princes." Chase says.

"Our first official date." Eden says.

"And it's not over yet." Chase says.

They hop in the car and head back towards Los Angeles.    Chase heads to Disneyland and parks.

"Disneyland baby?" Eden asks.

"But of course. Have to take my Princess to the happiest place on earth." Chase replies.

"I love you." Eden says.

"I love you more princess." Chase replies kissing her hand.

He then gets out of the car and gets her door. Eden gets out and they head to Disneyland hand in hand. They head inside and   stop first at Sleeping Beauty's castle and have someone take a picture of them in front.

Finally, they head back to the car and head to Universal Studios.   They go inside and get on rides.   They ride on Harry Potter and the Forbidden journey, The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Flight of the Hippogrif, Fast and the Furious Supercharged, King Kong 360, The Walking Dead attraction, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Jurassic Park the ride, Transformers The ride, The Simpson Ride, Revenge of the Mummy Ride, Super Silly Fun Land, Sill Swirly Fun Ride, Special Effects show, Water World, Universal's animal actors, and Charter sightings.

They finish everything they wanted to do at the park before heading back to the car.

Alice had other suspicions; she had felt that her father had a hand in her mother's death from the get-go. She felt as though she lay there for an eternity silently crying as the life faded from her body before everything went black. Unconscious, Alice didn't notice the strange man who silently approached. Didn't feel as he bent over, sinking his fangs into her throat. However, she did notice when he unclenched his jaw from her neck, and the most intense pain she believed possible spread through her body like fire.

When Alice opened her eyes, she was alone in a small, dark, wooden shack. She looked around at the space from the bed she had been placed on, trying to figure out how she got here. The last thing Alice could remember was the bullet hitting her back, and then... so much pain. Now, her throat was burning; she needed water. No, not water... but what? 

Alice stood, needing to find something to relieve the pain she felt in her throat when a man entered the one-room shack; he held his hands out, indicating he was not there to harm her. He tossed an unconscious rabbit at her feet. She immediately understood what to do, picking it up to drink deeply; the blood coated her throat, ceasing the burning sensation temporarily. 

Alice would spend the next five years with this man, whom she learned to be named Carlisle. He explained how he'd found her bleeding to death in the woods and turned her into a vampire just before she had passed on saving her life. Carlisle taught her about vampiric customs, how they lived in secret, and how to hide in plain sight amongst humans. How he fed off of animals and how to hunt. 

As much as Alice enjoyed her time with Carlisle and eventually, his wife, Esme; she still wanted to find her soulmate, as new flowers continued to show up every day. So she bid the couple farewell, promising that she would return one day.

Three years later, she met Charlotte; Alice was working as a sketch artist in Philidelphia when she encountered the woman on a walk late at night. She had never seen another person with as many marks as she had and immediately approached the woman. Charlotte was kind, explaining how she and her soulmate Peter had been involved in vampire wars in the south. They had both been bitten numerous times during battle; consequently, they both had gardens just like Alice. 

She stayed with the pair for a month when she approached Charlotte with a question. Alice pulled down her sleeve to expose a long scar on her left shoulder blade. She wanted to know if Charlotte or Peter had ever seen anyone with a matching mark during their time in the south. Maybe just like the pair,  her soulmate had been involved, thus the reason for her floral prints. The couple shared a mutual look of realization; Peter nodded in affirmation before leaving abruptly.

Charlotte sat down with Alice, prepared to explain some things. She told her about a man named Jasper, a man who'd had his entire worldview shaken apart the day a rose vine appeared on his shoulderblade. Not only was Jasper involved in the wars, but he was also a significant player. Jasper was the right-hand man of the leader of one of the most powerful covens in the south, the very same coven from which Peter and Charlotte had escaped. Charlotte confided in Alice that he had been questioning his role in the disputes for decades, how Peter had gone back countless times, risking his life in attempts to convince Jasper to leave. It had taken that rose vine to change his mind, to make him realize just maybe there was something better out there for him. He had been looking for her ever since.

When Peter returned alone, Alice wished she could cry; she had wanted desperately to find this man ever since the day her father had brought Anna-Marie into their home. She wanted someone to honestly care for and understand her. When Peter told her Jasper was waiting at the train station, she'd never run so fast in her life in her haste to get there. 

He was waiting as promised; suddenly nervous, she hid behind a stone pillar just hidden from view, taking him in. He was a tall, stoic man; even from a distance, Alice could make out a rosebud on his neck in the exact same spot Carlisle had bitten her years ago. When he turned his head slightly, she was able to make out a pair of striking red eyes and an expression of apprehension. With a sudden surge of courage, she stepped out into full view, taking cautious steps toward the man who now stared at her. 

They stood there for a moment, each taking the other in neither speaking, both of them just existing in this long-awaited moment. The instant Alice looked into his eyes, she felt comfortable; he seemed so familiar as though she had known him her entire life. It was an instant, overwhelming connection, and in that moment, she knew that she would never leave his side.

"Hi, my name is Alice." She broke the silence, finally extending a hand.

Chapter 4         Dream Of A Starless Sky

Later, Peter realized, it was because he had been talking to Tony while also waiting for the rain to fall.

Outdoor work had been humid and miserable, but every distant roll of thunder made Peter smile.  Stormy nights meant he would dream of Tony.

But the storm simply wouldn’t happen.  As he sat on his bed, working on “the books” (really a single notebook with rows of columns that he wrote in with black and red pens, just like Aunt May had showed him) he had been complaining to Tony about money.

It seemed the whole summer had been about money.

No money for the trips to New York City.  No money to fix the electricity in some parts of the house so those parts just remained dark.  No money to fix May and Ben’s bathroom so now they both bathed in the same bathroom as Peter.  Which was exactly the same as it was in New York City, only now it seemed wrong.  At least their toilet still worked on their side of the house.  Otherwise they’d have to move into one of the bedrooms in Peter’s hall (he HATED that idea because all those rooms were his ‘offices.”   He tried to discourage them by insisting the room across from him was “really truly haunted.”  Even after all this time, that’s where the strange noises still came from.

Peter didn’t have real money problems, of course.  He now had more spending money that he’d ever had in his life.  But worrying over the numbers, somehow, made him feel more grownup.

“I just can’t maintain a terrarium budget and buy all these books and afford a long distance call to Ned,” he complained to the silence.  “And I have to have those terrariums before school starts if I’m going to feed you snakes.  And any day now I’m going to catch a snake, I came really close today, Tony.  Really close.  But what’s the point when I don’t have anything to put him in, let alone feed him.  But it’s so much easier now that they aren’t running from me.  And it’s so easy not to be afraid of them when I know they're not venomous, when I know they’re trying not to be afraid of me.  I’m getting really good.  But not fast enough to do it by hand, not like Mr. DeSlaughter.  Not yet.

“And there’s no point in trying to build a rabbit hutch until I learn how to build  a damn fence…”  he groused, subtracting $10 from the column marked “Rabbits” and moving it over to “Phone” with a frown.  It seemed the more that went wrong inside the house, things that Ben knew he couldn’t fix, the more outside projects he decided needed doing outside.  He had tasked Peter with building a pretty fence around the patch of flat ground right outside the kitchen where Aunt May planned to plant a garden someday, a frustrating task given that Aunt May never seemed to get around to planting and Peter’s fence kept sinking.  Even now he turned his head and glared at the room across the hall from him.  The room they were now calling the “Noisy Room.”

The “noisy room”  was technically one of his “offices” but he had never put anything in there.  The carpet, along with the uneven wallpaper, was spectacularly ugly.  He didn’t even store his extra books there.  The sole piece of furniture was an old bed that Aunt May had made once and forgotten about.  The only other thing in that room was a huge, uncurtained window that, if you stood in the right place, could look at the “sunny patch.”  Peter glared through the walls at the noisy room and the window that looked out on his failures.  The “sunny patch” was a better place to make plans for than to actually work on.  Secretly Peter hoped May would never get around to planting that garden.  He had envisioned putting up a different kind of fence and raising a goat there.

“That’s it!”  he said finally, tossing “the books” aside and flopping down on his bed.  “It won’t work!  I just can’t afford to call Ned!”  

He fell asleep just like that, angry at the world, angry at the constantly sinking fence, angry at his sudden loss of privacy now that Ben and May both had to make one nightly trip each down his hallway, but mostly angry at the distant thunder that meant the storm would never ever come.

“I don’t wanna’ piss off any Post Sisters, Tony,” he remembered murmuring before he fell asleep on top of the covers.  “But I’d really love to find one of those spellbooks on how to find treasure right about now.  I know I’m a boy and boys have cooties and all but… damn finding a buried bucket of money would help a lot right now.”  

 * * *

He was more than a little confused to wake up with Tony standing, silently, by his bed.  There was plenty of grey around his temples and he looked pale, but not as drawn or grizzled as Peter had seen him before.  But he was silent, and that was unnerving.  He had a tight, determined look on his eyes that reminded Peter very much of the night he had received his witchesmark in Franeknstines’ lab.

Still, it was Tony, and he was more grateful than anything else.  So when Tony reached out and took his hand he gladly went with him.

Tony silently led him into the woods and to the path that led to the lake.  Peter realized quickly that he was dreaming because he was still barefoot.  Still, he held onto Tony’s hand.  Holding Tony’s hand and following him into complete darkness had always ended well for him.

The lake in the moonlight was lovely.  From there Tony led him steadily up the ridge, the dead oak’s black branches reaching out to caress the night sky.   They passed under the oak until they came within sight of the Lone Chimney.

Only it wasn’t a Lone Chimney anymore, it was an entire little house.  Peter gasped with delight, letting go of Tony’s hand and running towards it.  It was charming.  It was more than that -- for the first time Peter understood how the word “charming” could be used to describe a house.  It seemed to be laid out the same way he and Mike had envisioned it, but they never could have envisioned the beautiful sash windows or the ornate wrought-iron patterns that decorated the wide porch.  It was delicate and feminine and so very romantic.  It could have been a picture in a storybook.  Peter and Aunt May had passed bed-and-breakfasts that wished they were this charming.  It was surrounded by an elaborate garden of hedges and neatly trimmed trees.  There must have been flowers, Peter could smell roses, but in the darkness he couldn’t tell.  He could only make out the finespun, ivy covered gates and the dark shapes beyond.  If anyone wanted to go on a honeymoon, they would come here.

“Did he… Tony this is lovely.  Is this… did Tom Dylan make this house?  For her??”  It took Peter’s breath away.  All of a sudden he could see it, so perfect and complete:  A labor of love.  A charming, picturesque miniature house, far away enough for complete privacy but close enough to walk over for a family dinner.  And the ivy-covered gates and the swing and the loving planned romantic garden, arranged like a flower bouquet.  Arranged like a bouquet to be presented to someone own true love.  It was absolute art.  

No wonder Tom Dylan Post was furious when Laura Foster wanted to live there, married to his little brother instead of with the man who had made it for her.

Suddenly, absurdly, Peter found himself wishing Missy were here.

When he turned back to look for Tony, he understood the wish.  It was romantic, tragic ending aside.  The dark roses.  The charming secret cozy castle with the cozy bed inside.  And the handsome man, wearing a handsome black dress-coat and a grey vest, standing silently in the moonlight.  It made Peter’s heart skip a beat.

Tony reached out one hand, but Peter didn’t take it right away.

“This is a dream, this is a dream,” he said, his eyes firmly closed.  It was a risky move, something he never attempted in his normal meetings with Tony, but right now he longed for it with his whole body.  It was worth the risk.

Twice he tried it, closing his eyes and then opening them again.  The second time, it worked.

He was no longer wearing a baggy t-shirt and boxers.  He was wearing a billowy white nightgown, tied with ribbons at the neck and at the wrist.  (It wasn’t a womans’ nightgown, he had seen men wearing the same thing in books.  Still, he felt.. pretty.)  

He was also significantly shorter.  He padded up to a confused-looking Tony, proud of his accomplishment.  Since he turned 16 he was usually eye-level with Tony’s nose but now he had to stand on his tiptoes when he lifted his face for a kiss, draping his hands over the back of Tony’s neck.

Tony looked down at him curiously in the moonlight.  Then he smiled, understanding.  With two gentle hands on Peter’s waist, he leaned down for a long, tender kiss.

For several moments they stayed that way, kissing in the silence of the night.  Then Tony pulled Peter closer, wrapping one long arm around Peter’s slight waist and scooping him up off his feet.  “Take me inside,” Peter whispered into the kiss, picturing the cozy bed that would be there.  It was a dream, and whatever happened in the dream...   

But Tony was shaking his  head between kisses.  He sank to his knees and laid Peter out on the earth.

Tony had done things to him in dreammeetings that had felt wonderful, but nothing prepared him for the thrill of feeling the weight of Tony’s body on his.  He whimpered as he clutched at Tony’s back and remembered, quite suddenly, that he was dreaming.

And what they did in dreams didn’t count.

Although that was hard to remember as Tony’s eager hands pulled up Peter’s nightgown up to his waist and Peter felt the hard earth on his bare skin (had he really forgotten to dream about underwear??)  

Tony’s hands on his ass was not a familiar sensation, but the fingers were knowing and thorough.  Peter relaxed in Tony’s arms, looking up with wide eyes at the starless sky.

He panicked and tried to keep Tony with him when his friend tried to rise, clutching at him desperately, but Tony was stronger than he was.  Firmly he moved Peter’s arms away from him and rose to his knees.

Peter whimpered and flinched, his hands flying out, when Tony parted his knees and moved to kneel between them.  His face was calm, but unreadable, and Peter was reminded again of the Tony he had met in Frankenstein’s laboratory.  Then the face was gone, and Tony lovingly scooped his right arm under Peter’s shoulders and kissed him gently again, letting the weight of his body press down upon Peter’s.

Peter moaned as his stiff cock was pressed against the rough fabric of Tony’s vest.  It shouldn’t have felt so natural, laying this way, naked from the waist down underneath Tony’s body as Tony rocked against him, over and over again.  But here they were.  Peter opened his eyes again and let the tension build in his body.  He would be coming soon, suspended in this strange place between the black earth and the night sky, moaning Tony’s name.

Then Tony pulled away again and, with the same determined look on his face, slipped his forefinger into his mouth, wetting it slowly.

Peter whimpered as Tony reached between Peter’s legs and, gently but firmly, slipped his finger into the earth.

The earth yielded without comment.

Peter, however, moaned and flinched and looked between his legs in confusion, then moaned again.  What Tony was doing with his finger in the earth looked even more obscene than when he had put it in his mouth.  Then he pulled his finger free and inserted his middle finger into his mouth, watching Peter’s eyes as he wet it.  Gently but firmly he reached between Peter’s thighs and pushed both wet fingers into the earth, pulling them out and easing them back in again.  Peter could no longer see, his eyes were closed, but he knew.  He hid his face in Tony’s arm, keening when Tony wet his third finger, then the fourth.  Peter couldn’t bear to look down and see Tony’s four fingers working themselves tenderly in and out of the earth, but he felt every inch of it.  His legs were trembling.  His breath came out in sobs.

“Nononono…” he cried out when Tony wet his thumb.  

“Shhhhh…” Tony crooned.  It was the only sound besides Peter’s panicked breathing.  He pressed his face back into Tony’s arm.  He tried to lay his feet back on the ground, tried to relax his aching legs.  But his legs kept pulling away from Tony’s hand and what Tony was doing with it.  

“Please… please Tony… please I’m so close…”

“Soon, amado.  Soon.”  His voice was thick and determined and sounded far too urgent to be comforting.

Peter’s arms flailed out when Tony’s hand had sank in up to the wrist.  His left hand came into violent contact with the brick wall beside him, and he looked up in surprise to see where they were laying.  He hadn’t noticed before, but directly above him, looming in the darkness, was the chimney.  Tony’s hand was now buried past the wrist, and he was making a strange, panting noise that Peter had never heard from him before.

The pain in his fingertips made it easier to focus.  Pressing the back of his skinned fingers solidly against the brick wall, Peter wrapped his other arm around Tony’s back and watched his face.  Tony had always taken him to bed with such patience and gentleness.  Tonight he didn’t look patient or gentle at all.  He looked lost.  Peter watched with wonder even as he pressed his aching erection against the rough fabric of Tony’s vest over and over again.

“Yes Tony, yes,” Peter whispered as Tony thrust his body down with a final grunt and a choked-off moan.  He kissed Tony’s face over and over again, the clenched eyes, the slack jaw, even as he jerked his body desperately against Tony’s until he finally came between them.  They lay together on the ground, panting and holding each other in the darkness.  Peter hid his tears in the sleeve of Tony’s coat.  Tony’s arm, buried up to the elbow, remained in the earth between Peter’s thighs.

Peter woke and changed the sheets of his bed.  He put bandages on his scraped fingers and got dressed.  Grabbing a toaster waffle and a shovel he headed out to Chimney Hill.

He had plans to find the spot by using the length of his arm.  The spot would be exactly where he stood if he could press his knuckles to the bricks of the chimney.  But there was no need to measure.  The hole was already there, marking the spot, exactly the same size as Tony’s fist.

Peter started to dig.

List of books I’ll be putting in Whimsica the Crossover

This crossover will clearly have everything.

I haven’t even read the majority of these books or stories but I’m planning to read all of them.

Since I’m getting back into reading, I’m listing books I’ll be taking concepts, characters, even plots and references from.

Note: This is a Whimsica crossover, and it will be lighthearted. Therefore I’m avoiding books that are about very heavy real-world subjects (racism, rape, antisemitism or the Holocaust, war), sadly. I feel it would be insulting to those books and what they stand for to twist them into something fun and whimsical. An example of a “heavy book” would be To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m also avoiding books that are just problematic or hateful in nature. An example of this would be The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which uses the n-word... (I THINK.)

However, American Girl books will still be “allowed” (which I was actually debating). Addy’s series is particularly heavy, though I will make sure to not trivialize its message. The American Girl books were a huge part of my childhood.

Seven Types of Stories

so there are tons and tons of lists that break down types of stories in any number of archetypes, but here’s one that’s easily digestible bc it has only seven types with a plethora of examples!!  Taken from wikipedia:

Summary

The meta-plot

The meta-plot begins with the anticipation stage, in which the hero is called to the adventure to come. This is followed by a dream stage, in which the adventure begins, the hero has some success, and has an illusion of invincibility. However, this is then followed by a frustration stage, in which the hero has his first confrontation with the enemy, and the illusion of invincibility is lost. This worsens in the nightmare stage, which is the climax of the plot, where hope is apparently lost. Finally, in the resolution, the hero overcomes his burden against the odds.

The key thesis of the book: "However many characters may appear in a story, its real concern is with just one: its hero or heroine. It is he with whose fate we identify, as we see him gradually developing towards that state of self-realization which marks the end of the story. Ultimately it is in relation to this central figure that all other characters in a story take on their significance. What each of the other characters represents is really only some aspect of the inner state of the hero or heroine themselves."

Rags to Riches

Definition: The poor protagonist acquires power, wealth, and/or a mate, loses it all and gains it back, growing as a person as a result.

Examples: Cinderella, Aladdin, Jane Eyre, A Little Princess, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, The Prince and the Pauper, Brewster's Millions.

The Quest

Definition: The protagonist and companions set out to acquire an important object or to get to a location. They face temptations and other obstacles along the way.

Examples: The Odyssey, The Pilgrim’s Progress, The Lord Of The Rings, King Solomon's Mines, Six of Crows, Watership Down, Lightning Thief, Apocalypse Now.

Voyage and Return

Definition: The protagonist goes to a strange land and, after overcoming the threats it poses to them, they return with experience.

Examples: Ramayana, Alice in Wonderland, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Orpheus, The Time Machine, Peter Rabbit, The Hobbit, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, Brideshead Revisited, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Gone with the Wind, The Third Man.

Comedy

Definition: Light and humorous character with a happy or cheerful ending; a dramatic work in which the central motif is the triumph over adverse circumstance, resulting in a successful or happy conclusion. Booker makes sure to stress that comedy is more than humor. It refers to a pattern where the conflict becomes more and more confusing, but is at last made plain in a single clarifying event. The majority of romance films fall into this category.

Examples: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Bridget Jones's Diary, Music and Lyrics, Sliding Doors, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Tragedy

Definition: The protagonist's character flaw or great mistake which is their undoing. Their unfortunate end evokes pity at their folly and the fall of a fundamentally good character.

Examples: Macbeth, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Carmen, Bonnie and Clyde, Jules et Jim, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, John Dillinger, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar.

Rebirth

Definition: An event forces the main character to change their ways and often become a better person.

Examples: "The Frog Prince", "Beauty and the Beast", The Snow Queen, A Christmas Carol, The Secret Garden, Peer Gynt, Groundhog Day.

The Rule of Three

"Again and again, things appear in threes . . ." There is rising tension and the third event becomes "the final trigger for something important to happen". We are accustomed to this pattern from childhood stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood. In adult stories, three can convey the gradual working out of a process that leads to transformation. This transformation can be downwards as well as upwards. Booker asserts that the Rule of Three is expressed in four ways:

The simple, or cumulative three, for example, Cinderella's three visits to the ball.

The ascending three, where each event is of more significance than the preceding, for example, the hero must win first bronze, then silver, then gold objects.

The contrasting three, where only the third has positive value, for example, The Three Little Pigs, two of whose houses are blown down by the Big Bad Wolf.

The final or dialectical form of three, where, as with Goldilocks and her bowls of porridge, the first is wrong in one way, the second in an opposite way, and the third is "just right."

Gardener! Rama Raid AU

Title: There's no such thing as cannibals.

Gardener! Rama: Actually, dad, i don't eat animals. Also, there's no such thing as cannibals. You're just hallucinating -_-

This AU about Rama living at his own garden house, he's 11 years old and he doesn't show his emotions. The reason why he doesn't show his emotions just because Morag killed his family to death, and he's only one last child on Planet Earth. He keeping his secret from everyone, especially his adoptive father, Principal, who's 39 years old.

Sometimes, when his father got confused as he points to his cheek covered in Morag's blood. He asks why his cheeks covered in blood, Rama said "Just.... Got attacked by someone a little.... Nothing special, dad...." He asks again if he eats animals, he said he doesn't eating them, he also said "There's no such thing as cannibals" and he thinks his father is hallucinating. That's why he keeping his secret from everyone and his father, which he actually ate Morag as a hypocritical cannibal.

One day, his father introduces Neko-Sufi who's 33 years old, just before she introduces herself, she saw something on Rama's cheek, making her a bit worried. "I'm fine, Miss...." he said, "You know, i'm barely survived? I did, but.... I lost my family..... I'm having risk of my health...." As both Principal and Neko feeling concerned about why he's acting like this. He tells something truthful to him. "You know..... Son..... *Sighs* I'm just... *Blushing* Married with Neko-Sufi about 7 years ago....." Upon hearing his truth, Rama knows Neko is his mother.

4.”Movie title is somehow part of the physical world of the movie” It’s a cute visual gag, don’t over think it. Even if it is your job to do so.

5.”Everyone cuts grass angry” He goes into a spiel that’s…actually kind funny, but not a sin.

6.”Why are you always on top?” “Because I’m the oldest” “Really? Is that how it works? My life will be pleased to hear this” …Ew.

7.”So begins a terribly frustrating theme in this movie…what these animals and do and do not know about real life” Well, they’ve been tangling with McGregor for a while, I can buy that they know about salad dressing since maybe he has some.

8.”Peter apparently went to the Bret Ratner school of hearing things” Too soon.

8.”How exactly does Alan Grant McGregor know he killed this random rabbit’s father?” Given how alike they look, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist. (Also, said random rabbit was like right not too far from him in this flashback, he has eyes ya know)

This one I just picked for fun since the video was short-ish and it gave me an excuse to finally watch the movie. That and it was on Netflix. Anyway, this only had one less sin than the Lion King one. Although I did start running of sins near the end.

It’s not too bad of a video compared to the others I’ve done,but of course it had it’s share of sins.

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (Discworld. Death has to take over the duties of discworld’s version of Santa Claus in an attempt to keep the world from ending.)

Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett (Discworld. Death gets fired and decides to live as a human—as near to human as he can, at any rate. eventually he has to battle the New Death to save the discworld.)

Guards, Guards! by Terry Pratchett (Discworld. Sam Vimes, leader of the disgraced and dying Ankh-Morpork City Watch, regains his self-respect and his interest in life as he works to solve a mystery of who is summoning a dragon and killing off citizens of his city.)

The Bromeliad by Terry Pratchett (small ‘nomes’ live secretly in this world, hiding from humans. the perpetually out-of-his-depth and put-upon nome Masklin finds himself in charge, tasked with leading them to safety and finding their way home.)

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (an angel and a demon tasked with seeing that apocalypse happens as scheduled decide to try to avert it instead. completely and utterly fantastic.)

The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber (novella told like a fairy tale, full of wordplay and beauty and fun. this one just absolutely shines.)

The Gates by John Connolly (young boy, his dog, and an extremely minor demon try to stop the end of the world.)

The Infernals by John Connolly (sequel to The Gates, featuring the same characters.)

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (a young lady is cursed to be old, decides to become cleaning lady for a wizard rumored to be dangerous but actually just vain, overdramatic, and irresponsible. so very fun and romantic.)

Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R. Tolkien (a local peasant finds himself unwillingly roped into facing a marauding dragon.)

Comedy

All of the P.G. Wodehouse books, particularly the Jeeves and Wooster series (wonderfully fun and lighthearted comedy set vaguely between the edwardian era and the 1920’s. Rich, cheerful, and kindhearted Bertie Wooster has a habit of accidentally getting engaged to girls he has no desire whatsoever to marry; his clever valet Jeeves gets him out of trouble every time.)

With One Lousy Free Packet of Seed by Lynne Truss (hilarious and surprisingly touching at the end. lots and lots shenanigans. really fun.)

Romantic Comedy

Cotillion by Georgette Heyer (romantic comedy, fake relationship, regency era.)

When a Man Marries by Mary Roberts Rhinehouse (romantic comedy with a stolen jewels mystery plot. cast of characters stuck in a house together.)

Romance

These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer (historical romance with intrigue and comedy. The main character crossdresses and, to me, reads as genderqueer. The love interest is basically a villain who accidentally becomes the hero. I LOVE IT.)

Her Every Wish by Courtney Milan (regency romance novella. hero is bisexual. subplot about bicycles being scandalous. this is the one that I have Roxanne give Megamind in Code: Safeword.)

The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan (regency romance, the last in the Brothers Sinister series, all of which are good. main character reads as autistic. her love interest is younger than she is; they’ve secretly presented her groundbreaking scientific work as his, so that people will take it seriously.)

When a Scott Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare (regency romance; main character has social anxiety and made up a fiancee years ago to get out of her impending social season. but now a man with the same name has shown up claiming to be this fiancee, and intending to marry her.)

Mystery

Behold, Here’s Poison by Georgette Heyer (1920’s murder mystery with comedy and romance. The characters are wonderful.)

Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie (murder mystery featuring elderly heroine Miss Marple, who seems fluffy and harmless but is really a sneaky, nosy, and terribly sharp woman. I love her.)

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie (murder mystery featuring detective Hercule Poirot. intricate and enjoyable.)

Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie (murder mystery set in ancient egypt. both the mystery and the historical features are extremely well executed.)

Difficult to Categorize

Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story by Leonie Swann (A group of sheep decide to solve the mystery of who killed their shepherd. Funny and moving. The point of view is amazingly well done.)

Watership Down by Richard Adams (A group of rabbits set out on a journey to establish a new home. The worldbuilding and characterization are fantastic.)

Kiln People by David Brin (science fiction mystery. amazing worldbuilding. One of the main characters is a robot who, due to a slight malfunction, has developed a personality and will of his own.)

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion (A love story set during the zombie apocalypse, between a young woman named Julie and a zombie known as R, who isn’t quite as dead as zombies are supposed to be. Horrifying and romantic and uplifting.)

Dreams of Sex and Stage Diving by Martin Millar (Main character Elfish is basically the living embodiment of ‘fuck you’. She’s a guitarist on a mission to claim the name Queen Mab for her—just at present nonexistent—band from her ex-boyfriend Mo.)

Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt (a young woman in the medieval era gets lost in the forest and nearly dies. When she meets Death, though, she convinces him to postpone her demise—she claims that love is stronger than death, and he tells her that if she can prove it by finding her true love within one day, he will spare her life. Full of joy and sorrow and love.)

The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury (A group of children go on a fantastic trip through time with a mysterious man called Moundshroud in an attempt to save the life of one of their friends. Fun and dark and beautiful.)

The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson (An epidemic wipes out all of the adults in the world. Ten year old Lisa Nelson bands together a group of survivors and shapes them into a new society, with her at its head. Satisfying.)

Fantasy

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley (Gorgeous worldbuilding, kidnapping, romance, magic, and adventure.)

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (The last of the Unicorns goes on a quest to find out what happened to the rest of her species. Fun and frightening and hauntingly beautiful.)

Transformation by Carol Berg (The Emperor’s New Groove for grown-ups. Formerly a magician and currently a slave, Seyonne finds new meaning in his life when he and careless, proud Prince Aleksander work together to defeat the demonic forces that threaten the kingdom. Slavery and freedom, loyalty and friendship. Intricate worldbuilding.)

War For the Oaks by Emma Bull (Urban fantasy. Eddie has just broken up with her boyfriend, and, in the process, broken up the band they both played in. She has enough problems of her own, without getting dragged into a war between the Seelie and Unseelie courts of the Fae.)

Young Adult Fantasy

So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane (Young adult fantasy adventure. Preteen protagonists Kit and Nita journey into a terrifying shadow world to fight a dark entity. One of my favorite depictions of magic of all time.)

Which Witch by Eva Ibbotson (The Great Evil Wizard Arriman has decided to take a bride! The members of the local witches’ coven are invited to a contest—whichever witch performs the most dark and wicked act of black magic will be Arriman’s bride. The young witch Belladonna is absolutely smitten with Arriman, and desperately wants to win the contest. The only problem is that Belladonna is a white witch.)

Megamind: the Novel by Lauren Alexander (A little darker and a bit more grown-up than the movie; still incredibly fun. It features additional scenes from Megamind and Roxanne’s developing romantic relationship.)

Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde (Teenage Kerry is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and ends up being taken captive by a group of people who are holding another person captive as well—a young man they insist is a vampire. Kerry thinks they’re crazy, and helps the boy escape…but it turns out they were actually right. And now she’s being held captive by a vampire on the run.)

Young Adult

Fat Kid Rules the World by K.L. Going (Depressed teenage protagonist Troy almost commits suicide, but is stopped by a homeless teenager named Curt, who is also a local punk rock legend. Curt convinces Troy to form a punk band with him, featuring Curt on guitar and Troy on drums…even though Troy can’t actually play the drums. funny and angry and deeply moving.)

The Undertaker’s Gone Bananas by Paul Zindel (Thriller. The misfit teenage protagonists are convinced that their neighbor murdered his wife, even though no one believes them. They set out to prove it.)

Older Children

The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Bernard (Recently orphaned, the disagreeable young Mary arrives at her uncle’s house—a house full of secrets and mysteries.)

A Little Princess by Francis Hodgson Bernard (Young, precocious, and strange Sara Crewe is sent to boarding school. When her father dies unexpectedly, leaving Sara a penniless orphan, the Headmistress forces Sara to work as a servant. Strength in adversity, the power of imagination, and an eventual happy ending.)

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Neatly Snyder (A group of children secretly play at being ancient Egyptians in a deserted lot. This one really captures the dangerous, wild, and intense feeling of childhood.)

Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix (adventure with young girl as heroine. genuinely creepy and exciting and so clever. my great-grandmother loved this one, too.)

The Witches by Roald Dahl (Young boy and his grandmother happen upon a convention of terrifying, evil witches.)

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischmann (Spoiled Prince Brat and his whipping boy Jemmy run away together, much to Jemmy’s annoyance. Adventure and friendship.)

Trapped In Death Cave by Bill Wallace (An adventure story with a secret map, a hidden cave, and an evil plot.)
