so in terms of the preferred dynamics of the pairing changing, i think this shift probably happened sometime in the last five years; imo it was sort of a slow crawl and then the emergence of smfs sped things up because fob gained a lot of new fans and also attracted old fans who were still around but maybe not creating anything during the gap between mania and smfs, whether it was art or fic. primarily i think it has to do with the fandom's general perception of pete and patrick having changed since the 2013-2019 era

the fact that they've grown and changed as people over the last decade (and when speaking about fob in its entirety, the last two decades) has in part something to do with this; fandoms are inherently predisposed to tropes, imo, which can often lead to characters (this term i think is appropriate since we are talking about fiction written about real people and to a lesser degree the people as they actually exist themselves) being shoehorned into fitting the confines of a specific archetype based on surface level aspects of their personality or physical attributes. patrick and pete for a significant amount of the band's history were perceived as sort of a wallflower and bad boy combo; this wasn't entirely incorrect, and imo most fic authors wrote them with a degree of nuance rather than purely relying on archetype, but you could usually find some form of that interpretation of their characters in most fic or fandom discussion relating to their personalities and relationship with each other. because of this and the fact that it was common in the 2000s/2010s to work within a context of assigning arbitrary personality traits to sex positions, such as 'bottoms are shy/tops are outgoing' (and with bottom always referring to sub bottom and top always referring to dom top), this lead to total bottom patrick cultural victory etc (obviously i agree with the outcome here but i don't completely agree with the journey it took to get there lol)

I know I’m president of the “vegas should be topped” fanclub. and yes I’m staring at my url as I type this lol. but I do fundamentally think vegas is a more fun character (to me) when he’s allowed to just be a dom. and doesn’t have to be made more complicated by secretly being a sub or something. he’s a crybaby and he has daddy issues and he likes seeing people in pain sexually. and gets off on control and bondage. and that’s so interesting! like I don’t think that’s a one dimensional view of him, I think that’s real neat actually. 

also on a meta level, as someone who is kinky myself I really enjoy plots where characters don’t have a 180 degree pivot in what they desire from beginning to end. so a story about someone channeling their desires more effectively than they did at the beginning is just always going to be more interesting, to me, than a story where someone realizes that they need to change what they want in some way.

all vegas has ever wanted is to have people who belong to him who won’t leave. and all pete has ever wanted is to be valuable and belong and be seen. and that manifests really beautifully kinky in the pet/owner thing they’ve got going on.

Ummm let’s see. I did a lot of research on the wine for chapter 3; it’s based off of an actual launch Penfolds is doing in China. (Penfolds being the brand that did the event with biblebuild.) they launched a regional specific line in China only and the labels are beautiful.

I’m a big wine drinker myself & live out in a HUGE wine region; it’s one of the places known worldwide in terms of regional wine/growth. I’ve gone to a lot of different wineries and love seeing the artwork and labels and things. Even with how much I love wine I still feel very inept with like, *expensive* wine and tasting notes 😂

Darling domination was partially inspired by “Blood Breath and Bone” by Strats & Bells, (In some ways here and there), and there are a few things in the next few chapters that I’ll be exploring that basically I’ve had brain rot since I read their collab. (Don’t worry I’ve talked to them and got permission 😂).

It was also put into creation by Lin ( @blackwatervial ) who desperately wanted an AU with experienced bdsm Pete showing Vegas the ropes (literally and figuratively.) I’ve talked out much of my plot/outline with her and she’s going to be doing more art for it (specifically something special for chapter 5!!).

I also really wanted to explore a darker side of bdsm in the sense of like, emotions and trauma and how those sorta affect and adapt how vegaspete both relate to sex? it’s not as deep as I’d like to go and have other fics for that but really wanted to highlight in ch 2 both top drop and sub drop. I have a lot of growth for Vegas planned and how he uses kink and domination for his own control and self worth and how that’s tied to his relationship with his father and Kinn and how that relates back to his dynamic with Pete.

There’s also a whole exploration with a bdsm club (& world building for that) that I sorta introduced in ch 3 but will be setting up the bdsm club as a central location in the fic for ch 4; some of which I had written out and outlined for an old fic in mdzs that I never wrote/published.

Identity porn has always been one of my favorite tropes and love exploring it, and haven’t really scene anything for vegaspete so far? Like I’m also feral to write a fic where VP meet in a club and fuck with identity shenanigans (either Vegas doesn’t know who Pete is or they both know and have a secret fuck or whatnot). I’m really excited to sorta build up this tension between Vegaspete before snapping it (as it always happens with identity porn/mistaken identity), and how that works with vegaspete.

I’m not sure if I have anything else to say… as of right now that wouldn’t be a spoiler! I haven’t started ch 4 yet bc I’ve been working on eyes on me ch 11 (which is fighting me tooth and nail) but hopefully will start ch 4 when I’m done with EOM 11!

just wanted to add in something i noticed but most of the people who prefer bottom pete are people who deeply relate or identify with him more than they do with patrick, which i think makes up most of the fandom. i don't think fob fans are majorly dominant people, considering most of fob's demographic lean more on the feminine side or people who are shy/reserved/less domineering. i know it's stereotypical, but it's kind of obvious to assume most fob fans are sub-leaning people. since more people are attached to pete, they probably project themselves onto him when consuming peterick art or fics and assign their own – often submissive – preferences with him without really considering if it's realistic or not.

oh yeah i forgot about this lol thank you for bringing it up because i do think this can be a prominent ingredient when it comes to shipping of all sorts but esp m/m ships. which like tbf i think is fine and normal, generally, because fanfiction is for most people primarily about wish fulfillment and projection, but that being said yeah i do think people could serve to learn that just because they relate to a character doesn't mean their interpretations of them are always 100% correct or accurate to the source material (which is trickier in this case since they're real people but you get what i mean lol)

tbh i don't know what the demographics in the fob fandom are in terms of people who identify with femininity, but i will say i do think that fandom in general skews in the direction of people who see themselves as submissive, yeah. and tbh the overall more popular top in any given m/m pairing is usually going to be the character who people identify with less and are more attracted to; i will say this somewhat applies to me by proxy in this scenario i suppose because while i think patrick is an attractive man, i am not attracted TO him (however when i first joined the fandom i did seek out top patrick fics at first but this. quickly changed once i learned more about them) and it is always kind of foreign to me to see people losing their minds over him (i'm mostly not into white guys 😭), though i support them and i mean i think it boosts patrick's self-esteem so i guess that's a good thing lol

i do have some friends who like bottom pete from a dominant's point of view, so this isn't always the rule, but yeah there do seem to be people who write him as a sub bottom because they view themselves as submissive and relate to him and so want to write him as a sub bottom (which, again, is fine)

i think this also used to be common with patrick because there used to be a lot of, like, popular boy is interested in unpopular girl romcom type peterick fics, but that sort of trope has sort of fallen by the wayside for them i think tbh, now i would i say it's more uh...damsel in distress type tropes with pete as the damsel. which is not something i really understand at all but i'm glad people are having fun
