my favorite omori theory of all time is the one where everything in Sunny's headspace must follow back to at least one thing in Faraway Town! There's some obvious ones like Space Ex-Boyfriend being a comic book character and the appearance of Neighbor's Room being derived from the treehouse.
But even in the smallest, most unnoticeable details still apply to this rule. Like the Dino's Dig food pyramid coming from a book about the food pyramid Sunny read as a kid, or Jash coming from Pet Rocks(and the company from which the Sproutmole Eater arcade machine in Gino's is from)
Though, there's one in particular that stands out among others. And that's the Present! They're very easy to acquire and use in Headspace, in fact their one of the first items you're able to purchase from Mailbox in Forest Playground. For such an easily attainable and probably overlooked item though, they bare a significant connection to the truth(at least a more significant connection than others like it)
When reading the descriptions of your Toys, the Present reads: "It's not what you wanted... Inflicts ANGER on a friend or foe." Which is eerily reminiscent of the friend's Christmas gift for Sunny, and his resentment toward the violin the more he is forced to practice for the recital with his sister.
It's also an emotion changing item, but specifically one that makes a party member or foe/boss angry. On the day of the recital, Sunny threw his violin down the stairs in frustration. "It's not what you wanted..." Could've easily been used as a description for this item to make a friend or foe sad too, but it doesn't.
In conclusion I believe that the Present item is a parallel to Sunny's frustration with playing an instrument, and story wise a way for Omori to further disguise the truth :D

YAML Files and Dialogue
First post! Let's go!

In this post, I'll be going over the basics of writing dialogue for Omori. There's a lot in terms of formatting, so I'll link to a website that goes over all those things in depth.

Location
A good way to start is by looking at the existing .yaml files in the vanilla game. Those can be located in the playtest folder provided by OneLoader, with the following filepath:
playtest_folder > languages > en > (all yaml files here)
In this folder is all of the dialogue in the game. This folder is also where you will have to put any new .yaml files that you create.
Syntax
When we open the 00_template.yaml, we’re shown the following code:

The meaning of this is pretty basic. Each message without a face attached (so all dialogues not involving Sunny, Basil, Hero, Aubrey, Kel, Omori, Mari, or Hector the Pet Rock) is defined as a single line of text following “message_XX” (where XX is some number) and messages with a face get two additional values that must be defined— the faceset, aka the file in which the face you want belongs, and the faceindex, aka which of the faces on the file. More on that later.
(Note: message_XX is convention, not requirement. Any string of text could work in this place. And in some cases, it could make it easier to remember certain dialogue choices if you give it a name other than convention. An example of a mod that uses this feature is Reverie.)

As you can see here, flavor text (text that pops up when you interact with objects) is defined in much the same way as cutscene dialogue, shown in the first example.
Comments
Also, comments! As in any normal coding language, the green lines of text known as comments (denoted with a ‘#’ symbol at the beginning of the line) are ignored by the file and are a great way of making your .yaml file easier to read.
Without these comments, you will end up with something like this:

It’s a lot more difficult to tell what anything is for if you’re looking at the files and aren’t the one who wrote the dialogues. Even for the one who wrote them, it can be harder to find anything.
Now look at the same .yaml file with comments added in:

It’s now much easier to tell what every line of dialogue is intended for in the game.
In-Game Formatting
“But, FruitDragon,” you may be saying, “what are all of these random backslashes and dots and lines in between the text for? And how does formatting like the really wavy text from Sweetheart’s iconic laugh happen?”
“Well, dear aspiring mod maker,” I say in return, “those random backslashes and dots and lines in between the text are exactly what causes that formatting to happen.”
(Almost. Technically, the wavy text is caused by the \sinv function. But I digress.) Here’s a quick guide to super basic formatting (for a more comprehensive guide, I highly recommend visiting this link.)
All formatting commands start with a backslash (‘\’) except for one— that's <br> and, much like the HTML version, causes a line break.
<br> = line break
\. = Pause 15 frames (approx. 1/4 of a second)
\| = Pause 60 frames (approx. 1 second)
\! = Wait for user input before progressing (basically means you have to press z to continue)
\^ = Automatically closes a text window once it's done writing itself (like if you want someone to be interrupted)
\sinv[2] = Wavy text (for less intense waving use \sinv[1])
\fr = Clear all text formatting
\quake[2] = Shakes text (for less intense quaking use \quake[1]
\v[#] = Passes in the value of the variable number given (ex: \v[143] passes in the save’s WTF value)
\c[#] = Changes text color! For a guide to which numbers mean which colors, visit the link above.
Again, it’s a good idea to look at already existing .yaml files for certain types of formatting, like if you want to mimic Sweetheart’s iconic laugh. No better way than to learn by example!

Okay, now I’ve made myself curious.

We have here Sweetheart’s iconic entrance with Sweetheart’s iconic laugh. Repeated a grand total of three times, each time with slightly different formatting.
What exactly is going on with this dialogue?
Here’s what I see in terms of formatting:

We already know most of these. As I mentioned, \sinv[1] and \sinv[2] are the thing that caused Sweetheart’s dialogue to get all wavy. \| is pause 60 frames, and \! is wait for user input before progressing. And <br>, of course, is line break. So what are \{, \Com[2], \smm, and \swh?
\{ is what increases the text size. Similarly, \} is what decreases the text size.
\Com[x] runs the Common Event from the game that has the same number as the number passed in to the command in place of x. In this case, Common Event #2 is Shake Screen, which means that every time \Com[2] is run, it’ll shake the screen. (Wow, that’s a lot of screen shaking in that last Sweetheart laugh.)
Now what are \smm and \swh?
It’s simple, really. But it involves getting into a topic that we haven’t really gotten into yet.
It’s time to talk about:
Names
That’s right, names. That little box that pops up on top of dialogue boxes to tell you who’s speaking.
Now that I think about it… we haven’t really seen how names are defined, yet. Only the dialogue itself. How does the game know who’s talking?

After scouring through the files, we’ve figured it out. It’s just the following line tacked on to the beginning of the text:
\n<NAME OF PERSON HERE>
But where is that for the other dialogues we’ve encountered so far?
Here’s the thing. Writing \n<NAME> over and over and over again can get tiring, especially when the name is super long. So there are a few shortcuts we can use for commonly recurring character names. While they can technically be placed on the beginning of the line, too, they’re typically added to the end of a text line. Here’s a short guide:
\aub = AUBREY
\her = HERO
\bas = BASIL
\kel = KEL
\mar = MARI
\omo = OMORI
\swh = SWEETHEART
\smm = SPROUT MOLE MIKE
\who = ???
\sbf = SPACE BOYFRIEND
\cap = CAPT. SPACEBOY
\spxh = SPACE EX-HUSBAND
Recognize any?
That’s right. \smm and \swh were used to denote that SPROUT MOLE MIKE and SWEETHEART were talking! That makes a lot of sense.
Of course, there’s definitely more. For a full list of shortcuts/macros, visit this link.
Also, important note! For a renameable character like Sunny (ignoring the examples earlier; parallels won’t have renameable Sunny) you’ll have to use \n[8] for the character’s name. 8 is the actor ID for Sunny. If there’s a different character that you want to get the name for like that, just use \n[ACTOR ID].
Now, it’s time to go over the things I said I would go over earlier. Faceset and faceindex.
Faceset

What is faceset? What are these random filename type things that are inputted in faceset?
They’re filenames. More specifically, for files in the img > faces folder, shown here:
The files in specific that we’ll be referring to for yaml files are the ones at the bottom of the image, denoted with the MainCharacter_ or MainCharacters_ prefix.
Here are options provided with the base game:
MainCharacter_Basil_dark — for all your nighttime FARAWAY TOWN character needs!
MainCharacter_Basil — All of the faces for BASIL and Dreamworld BASIL! With STRANGER, nighttime AUBREYs, and a few nighttime HEROs thrown in for good measure!
MainCharacter_Mari — Dreamworld MARI and unused GHOST MARI! Plus a few faces belonging to our faceless mannequins in Blackspace and our FARAWAY TOWN twelve-year-old friends!
MainCharacters_Dreamworld — Dreamworld HERO, AUBREY, and KEL. Plus HECTOR.
MainCharacters_Faraway — FARAWAY TOWN HERO, AUBREY, and KEL.
The file formatting for one of these facesets is pretty specific. 106 pixels by 106 pixels per face, 4 faces per row. You can have as many rows as you need.

How does the game know which face in each faceset to use, though?
Well, that’s where the next topic comes in.
Faceindex
This number tells the game which face to fetch from the given faceset.
Here’s a numbering example using a darkened monochrome version of MainCharacters_Faraway:

As you can see, the count starts from 0 (because computers) and goes up by one, wrapping around to the next row each time. So calling MainCharacters_Faraway and assigning the faceindex value to 2 would show the face with the value 2, or AUBREY with her eyes closed, when that dialogue is printed.
Now it's time to put our new knowledge to use!

I used pretty basic formatting, since a lot of the text moving ones like \sinv can’t translate well to screenshots. \!, \., \|, and any other wait/player input commands also don’t translate to screenshots, though I still used them.
One of the others that I used, which I didn't go over in much detail, is \fr, which resets all font changes. This is used because at the beginning of KEL’s dialogue, the font size is increased, but we don’t want the font size to stay large for the entirety of the line.
Something to note: YAML files are extremely picky. Formatting one wrong can lead to a game crash. It's suggested that you use a yaml checker like https://www.yamllint.com/ to verify that you have all the syntaxes correct. It's laughably easy to make a mistake with these.
Now, you may be wondering, how do you add these dialogues to the game?

Games: -A Space for the Unbound: chill fetch quests in a small town in rural Indonesia, finish your summer bucket list with your gf, pet cats, dive into the subconsciousnesses of your neighbours!
-Ender Lilies: metroidvania platformer with some tight controls like Hollow Knight, gorgeous artwork and music, you play as Lily, a young amnesiac priestess trying to purify the spirits of the dead and stop the plague ridden rain that won't stop falling, you're small and weak but you recruit different spirits to fight with you but it never feels overwhelming or bloated, really enjoyed it
-Signalis: survival horror as an android looking for her gf, she made a promise and she's going. to. fulfil. it. Dystopian future in space with lots of good old rusty machine body horror, strange senses of time and memory and there's some puzzles in there too.
-Sunless Sea: Victorian London was moved underground by bats. Don't worry about it. Go sail the seas and try and turn a profit without losing your mind from the Horrors ^.^ (deceptively a lot of reading in this, plays like a management sim meets VN)
-Omori: 4 years ago Something happened. Omori dreams his days away in his room, carefully not thinking about that Something. Some of the game is in his colourful dream worlds and some out in the real world. Fights are always tinged with emotional rock paper scissors as how you, your friends and enemies feel will affect the fight! He's about to move house and an old friend comes knocking on the door...

Books: -Va11-Hall-A: I...don't know whether to put a VN under games or books so I'm putting it between the two. You're a barista in a cyberpunk kinda world, you listen to patrons while making them drinks and chat. (It's chill but sometimes gets pretty heavy and has a lot of mature topics in it for the record.) -Deathless by Cathrynne M. Valente: an alternate history book that has one foot in the Russian Revolution and the other in fairytale. Marya Morevna marries Koschei the Deathless, and goes back to his kingdom. She makes friends with various folklore creatures, checks in on her sisters who all married birds and her old and new lives begin to collide.
-The Locked Tomb trilogy by Tamsyn Muir: sci-fi necromancers vie to become the next right bony hand of God, first book is a murder mystery, second is a grim tale by a survivor of the first but something is Wrong and you know it is, third is an oddly domestic political tragedy and I loved them all so much, cannot recommend the audiobooks in particular enough (as the first is a murder mystery, all the voices the narrator does are both incredibly well done but let me pinpoint exactly who was speaking even when I couldn't remember their names, also she voiced Daniella in Haunting Ground!)
-The Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch: small orphan becomes a conman in fantasy Italy. Ends up being drawn into some political intrigue and fucks around finds out, frequently!
-Children of Time: Spiders! Once upon a time an arrogant scientist decided to infect monkey with a virus that would encourage rapid evolution within cooperative species but...it reaches jumping spiders. They have their own form of sign language with vibrational tappy patterns against the ground and wiggling their palps! Scientist's consciousness has melded with an AI and is waiting for her monkeys to become intelligent enough to contact her
Misc: -Dungeon Meshi: do you want to learn about the ecosystem of a dungeon while also figuring out how to cook the creatures inside and watch a guy with a monster special interest live his absolute best life? Yeah you do! (I'm really enjoying this rn so ye)
-Mabel: podcast about a home health carer for an old lady who's only living relative, Mabel, is missing. Anna, the nurse, starts leaving her voicemails like a diary and slowly gets drawn into family secrets, fairy logic and goes exploring places she shouldn't (this one does not shy away from heavy topics including serious child abuse and its effects so if that's not for you then leave this one be)

ROUND 1 MATCH 11: KEL vs PARAPPA RAPPA
Kel (Omori) is the aloof but energetic kid of the friend group, and is the younger brother of Hero. He's very close to his friends (and especially his pet rock) but always fights with Aubrey about the smallest things. Those were good times, weren't they? Four years later, after all that has happened, Kel heads over to Sunny's house to see if he wants to hang out, like the good old days...
PaRappa Rappa, everyone's favorite musical hound. He's can sing and rap his way through anything, be it a driving test, karate lessons, or even waiting in line to the bathroom. No matter what gets in his way, all he has to do is believe and he'll pull through.
