Oden says in his journal that he can't tell if they're friends of enemies, and I just love that. Plus when you add in the revelation about Shanks and Buggy in the recent chapters.

He has earned the right to yell at this stupid, stupid Emperor for being a self-sacrificing fool and for giving away that stupid hat and... Wait, hang on, when did this bastard get hot!? WHAT THE FUC-) And Shanks just keeps smiling at Buggy and his antics because he has 100% been in love with him since they were children (his actions while they were on the Roger pirates are the DEFINITION of pigtail-pulling as flirting) and he is just happy to see that he's safe while being exactly the same larger-than-life clown he always knew. He would gladly give up his life of sluttery (that I am convinced this man has. Just look at how he exists) if Buggy would just agree to join his crew, but will not push him if he doesn't want to. He just loves his pretty clown from a distance and waits. TLDR: Buggy is mad that he's in love with Shanks and Shanks just likes existing with and/or annoying Buggy (they come as a pair). GOD I just love childhood friends to lovers bro. Just let the cabin boys kiss.

Kuraigana Island was exactly how Uta expected it to be from the moment her boat hit its shore; the castle as gloomy and dark on the inside as it appeared on the outside. What she wasn't expecting was to be met by Dracule Mihawk– but then again, her father had always had friends in strange places. The part that made less sense, however, was the other person inhabiting the island, one Shanks had not told her of. Perona, the Ghost Princess, a pirate; a girl as strange as she was beautiful, as enamoured by Uta as she was by her, and she’d never loved her own voice more than when she saw the glee that Perona danced to it with. The castle's dark corners seemed to be made for hiding things that neither Uta nor Perona would let see the light of day, and in those empty stone hallways, they were both grateful to be hidden away as things escalated out of either of their hands.

Czech guisers as old women carrying brooms during the Winternights festival, between Christmas and Feast of the Epiphany. Here the pagan and christian customs syncretize and converge, with masked processions, songs, rites, and play. Past posts discuss the Perchten who are active in southern German-speaking regions, especially Austria, with masks of the Old Goddess Perchta, races, and masquerades. The Czechs had their version of this celebration, with a variety of names for the (sometimes demonized) goddess [ch prounounced kh, not like in "choice"]:

"Perchta, Perechta, Peruchta, Parychta, Šperechta. Mainly South Bohemian folklore today knows Perechta as a mare, made of linen, a klibna (see next), which goes around the buildings at Christmas and Shrove Tuesday. The North Bohemian and Moravian folk tradition has preserved under the name Perechty, Šperechty the image of a female monster who goes around and threatens women who pass on Thursdays, children who do not fast or are naughty. Thus we distinguish Perechty (Peruchty), monstrous figures, prowling and haunting, and Perechty, masqueraders disguised as mares.

Čeněk gives detailed description of the varying customs and costumes, masks and rites, in different locales of Czechia. Often a chalice or goblet was carried, or very commonly brooms, which masqueraders used to sweep out rooms in the houses they visit (and demand pastries, food, and drink from), also sweeping benches, tables, shelves, stoves. Sometimes they swept the stove, in order to remove malign and impure influences for the coming year. All the while they are singing about baking, brewing, and goose in the oven. Or the procession carries brewers' vessels, malt, mixing bowls, and sometimes plasters the walls using their brooms.

Virtual Twins aren't limited to film

A few months ago, Professor Peruta posted a linkedin article about his experience using the butterflies app - "a social media platform where humans and AI-driven users coexist and interact." This, combined with the rise of synthetic influencers (like Lil Miquela, who has 2.5M followers on instagram), shows that there is an interest and fascination in exploring synthetic influencers on social media.

Of course, the next step to stardom for anyone who finds fame online is either signing them to a record label (like Mason Ramsey, who went viral for yodeling in a Walmart) or having them act in a commercial, movie, or show (like the reality TV show based on the oh so difficult struggle with fame so bravely endured by Tiktok influencers Charli and Dixie D'Amelio). It's natural that this would apply to synthetic influencers as well. Maybe Lil Miquela will be signed to a movie deal soon (or however that works).

Another area I've seen virtual twins is in the medical field. For my SXSW internship, I came across BioTwin, a startup that creates virtual twins for medical testing. It uses an at-home biomarker kit to create a "virtual you in the metaverse allowing to help simulate and predict health outcomes, enabling personalized healthcare and proactive interventions. It helps monitor health, detect patterns, and optimize treatments." Its sister company, TwinMe, allows users to track their health in several key areas over time. These medical biotwins are of course, more focused about what's on the inside of our bodies than the outside - I'm not sure if you can visually customize the physical appearance of your twin to make it an accurate image of yourself, but it'll match whatever health conditions you have going on inside of you. This seems to be a completely different context of "virtual twins," but perhaps all our different definitions of these synthetic beings (including AI actors/influencers and these biotwins) can culminate into fully accurate virtual replicas of real humans. Or, perhaps it can be used to create virtual humans with medical histories and conditions that can autonomously post online and interact with others.

Maybe instead of robots taking over the world, it'll be our very own digital twins o.0
