Personal Geography: Cognitive Map
Tumblr media
My personal Geography “Cognitive Map” was based on decision making depending different things I made a symbol of and placed it in between a decision. I worked a lot on my pen tool skills and I think this map predominates my learning skills. I enjoyed making especially this map since I didn’t realize before how many decisions I took in a matter of minutes.

Personal Geography
Working with symbols in a system was the main goal of this project I did for Graphic Design I. The first map was the artifact map where I had to create a literal map of my journey from home to school utilizing symbols I made in illustrator. The second map was the perceptual map where I created a map of my senses on the same route as my artifact map, also using symbols. The final map was the cognitive map which was similar to the perceptual map however, I had to make symbols of my thoughts rather than senses.
This project forced me to come up with a lot of abstract symbols representing abstract concepts and fitting them into a systematic space. This was difficult because I had to make sure I wasn’t over crowding the space while trying to fit the most content as possible. Coming up with symbols was also frustrating when working on my cognitive map because it was hard coming up with abstract symbols for my thoughts. I was able to refine my pen tool skills even more with this project and learned how to work within a system.

#3: Cognitive Map
In this map, I showed time through the lineage of a song, which is about the time it takes to get to school from my apartment. In my car, I think about my dreams that I have had during the night before and usually the music playing in my car affects the romanic quality I fantasize over. In this piece, I chose the song "Digital Love" by Daft Punk and a refection of having a dream about a love interest. I took photos from online and traced them in Illustrator in order to create silhouettes of two figures dancing among lyrics. I feel that this is a strong piece that conveys my mood in the morning perfectly. The cool colors of purples are illustrating my sleepy mood and how everything in the morning feels dull and soft. The music bar is a brighter color, standing out in the morning and the pink on it is representative of the sweet and warm lyrics.
I feel that this project was successful and I enjoy it visually.

Personal Geography
Map of St. Edward's University
click through image to the interactive flash page
I was assigned to create a map of a routine that I took often. One path that I take almost daily is the walk from my dorm (Johnson Hall) to the Fine Arts Center on campus.
I am extremely pleased with the way that the map turned out. I feel like it is a modern, fun, and accurate representation of the campus. I chose to have facts appear when you roll over symbols and buildings because I am always interested to learn about the history of the things around me. This map is educational, and yet, fun to look at.

My design for this project was inspired by cartoons, especially little girl cartoons. The design definitely has a "girl game" feel. I love all the bright colors i used. Even though flash is tough i really like my interactive game play. Although all days at St. Edwards are interesting, i think i brought a little bit more color and pizzaz to the map of our campus.

My Daily Walk
Title: My Daily Walk
Course: Graphic Design 1
Instructor: Daniel Lievens
For this project, I have created an interactive map showing my daily walk from my living area, Basil Moreau Casitas, to Fleck Hall. I chose to engage the viewer by allowing the viewer to control "me" with the arrow keys. The viewer can go at their leisure. Throughout the walk, as my icon walks along the path, information bubbles appear with something I encounter every day. The information is general and personal. I used Flash and Illustrator.

Personal Geography
My personal geography consisted of my walk from the parking garage to the art building. My interactive map had initially started out very detailed but then got to complicated to try to communicate my experiences through my icons. My final map was left simple as buttons were incorporated to show what I saw along my walk. My buttons included heavy acorn mess, squirrel sightings, bike racks, crow crossing, lawn mowing, and heavy traffic as the remaining icons were just used to explain what that one icon in the map represented. The map is navigated by clicking the two sides arrows, right arrow to go forward and left arrow to go back. Once you get through the path with the side arrows, you can then click on the icons to show where you might see the specific sightings. My last component involves viewing the history of the buildings and what goes on within them. You can mouse over any building and read up and see photos of where you're at on my journey.
