Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker was a defensive master, but also an offensive threat with stunning accuracy. @Compubox Achievements: •Whitaker is one of only seven fighters in CompuBox's 26-year history to landed 500 or more punches in a fight. •Whitaker's 286 jabs landed vs. Nelson is second all time in CompuBox history. Whitaker also landed 272 jabs in his W 12 over Santos Cardona, the 5th most in CompuBox history •Whitaker outlanded Julio Cesar Chavez 311-220 in total punches in their controversial draw on 9/10/93. Ganador del oro olímpico y como profesional llegó a ser campeón del mundo en cuatro categorías de peso diferentes. Falleció la noche del domingo 14 de junio de 2019 atropellado por un automóvil en Virginia Beach, tenía 55 años. • FUE DE LO MEJOR DEL BOXEO MUNDIAL • Ganó campeonatos mundiales en 4 pesos diferentes: peso ligero, peso welter ligero, peso welter y peso superwelter. "Sweet Pea" como se le denominaba fue incluido en el Salón Internacional de la Fama del Boxeo en 2006 y muchos lo consideran uno de los mejores boxeadores de todos los tiempos. • Peleó contra los más grandes de su época, hombres de la talla de Julio César Chávez, Oscar De La Hoya, Tito Trinidad y muchas otras luminarias de este deporte. ....I met Mr Pernell “Sweet Pete”(Not Pea. A journalist thought it was Pea and it stuck)Whitaker when I was a preteen speeding fast toward being an official teen. Historically I’ve had a giant mind, even though I wasn’t a giant in height, and maybe it was by default in order to survive. I spent my summers in Vegas attached to(my uncle by association)Hedgemon Lewis hip as if I were a troubled kid needing a mentor, but I wasn’t. I just needed something to do with my time away from LA. Everyday we’d hit the Top Rank Boxing Gym where he trained prize fighters. One day we walked in and I see this little man with gold teeth holding court-commanding, and for me at that moment it validated. I realized a giant mind could get me where my lack of height could never get me. He was 5’6, and Pound for Pound he was the best. And for the record, he was robbed. He beat Julio Cesar Chavez, Jose Ramirez and @oscardelahoya, so he’s 40-2 in my book. We were neighbors back in Virginia along with Bruce Smith in Church Point. I remember one day he was giving me a word of wise which I added to keeping myself grounded.
