I still think about Legacy and my sweet Cesare. The issue I've had, besides adult life getting in the way, is that the original laptop that story was written on crashed. It took all my notes and drafts with it. I still remember the one thing I wanted out of the ending but now the road to get there is lost. It would be like starting over and that will take time and planning and I hate making promises without anything concrete. But I actually just reread it three weeks ago to see where I left off. Second, its been soooo long since I read the book when Percy and Nico first meet, but for some reason I always kinda liked that Percy was annoyed by Nico and Nico seemed to idolize Percy lol does that make sense? I'd love to know your thoughts

I may have gone overboard with this but... here, have a full fledged analysis about that first meeting and how it can sort of be a microcosm of the Percico dynamic.

If you have heard the phrase "If you can't love me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best"? Well, for Percy and Nico, this saying is completely backwards. Percy and Nico seem to love each other the most when they are at their worst (or at least are more willing to show their affection for each other). Because that first meeting? Yeah, Percy was definitely not quite the hero Nico remembers him as.

Percy failed pretty badly against Dr. Thorn. He lost Annabeth, he couldn't kill the monster, he had to be saved by the Hunters and then find out Annabeth was thinking about joining them. He was not in a good place at that moment. Add in Nico being excitable and too curious and, well, he behaved like a moody teen. But Nico never saw that. He saw the earnest, brave hero who tried with all he had to save him and his sister, and he fell in love with him. This is actually very important from a meta perspective for Percico readings, because that's what their relationship is: Percy showing off how flawed he is in front of Nico without realizing, and Nico loving him all the same.

Nico, on the other hand, was arguably at his best in this meeting. Unburdened by his past of losing his mom, finding out he's part of a fantasy world he has been obsessed with for a while, having a cute boy wanting to rescue him... and Percy is annoyed at him. It's not until tragedy looms on the horizon for Nico (Bianca leaving him) that Percy starts seeing Nico and worrying for him, wanting him to be okay and safe. Percy never picks up on how he feels about Nico (platonically or romantically is up to you) until he's in danger or hurting, then he becomes protective and afraid for Nico.

These two love each other, but they only show it when things get tough, when they allow themselves to be imperfect, because it's the only time they don't need to communicate, they just need to keep the other safe.

And that's why that first meeting is far more important in setting up their relationship and dynamic than most people realize.

Opinions on Percico?

I can't say I ship it, but I have nothing against people that do. I wouldn't go looking for a percico fic but if it was a side pairing in a fic I like, I wouldn't mind having it there, on the side. I have found myself defending it in arguments a couple of times. It's a matter of principle. My personal ideology is let everyone ship what they want, so if I see somebody harassing a shipper that was minding their business because "thEiR sHip iS SO tOXiC", I'll give that somebody a piece of my mind.

Nico is the prince while Percy the concubine

This is funny bc I was thinking about this exact trope albeit a little different, as expected of a different pairing.

Now, a few things about this:

Idk if it's your intention but to me, the word 'concubine' suggests the existence of other... er, partners? Which got me snickering a bit because as it is, it's Percy who usually has a harem wrapped in his fingers, and whoever takes the place of his secret admirer would suffer as a result. This, however, gives contradictory vibes, obviously. It's the reverse of every regret in canon, and I gotta say it's quite lovely. No, it's not because I like pining Percy---ok yes I do. But I usually won't direct that affection toward Nico (I honestly don't know why. I don't mind it in other people's works, I just can't bring myself to do it). Although I wouldn't say I'm unfamiliar with a harem in Nico-centric fanfics, it's still a breath of fresh air to have this delivered to my ask box.

On the topic of polygamy, this also implies that Nico's official spouse is, in fact, another person, not Percy. But we will not stray there LMAO.

On the other hand, Nico doesn't strike me as one to collect mates either (I have a bunch of self-love Nico content you cannot expect this of me). Coupling that with the Royal background in which I prefer politics over romance, I hope there's a good reason as to how they got themselves into this dynamic. Or more specifically: Percy (because you can't become a prince without being born as one). This prompt can expand dramatically differently depending on what, exactly, he did.

Ngl, I hardly think of anything for this prompt LMAO. Unless there's a war and the Underworld wins, it's hard to think of a reasonable explanation for Percy to submit - and yet even then, it feels inadequate for Nico to take a war prisoner as a concubine. Too dangerous, and what's the purpose? To humiliate? Meaningless.

Unless it's 'love at first sight.' Eh. I hate it on principle. So.

The second possible scenario I can think of is an arranged marriage, which makes less sense unless we build Poseidon's family as a... lesser one? (I'm sorry). Again, I come up blank.

Hi anon! This is such a fun question! Thanks for sending it! I tried to choose the most popular ships because there are so many variations of them, but if you are curious about a specific one that I didn't mention, feel free to ask!

Percabeth (Percy x Annabeth)

3/10 I give it a 3 only because in PJO they are cute but in HOO they are full of red flags and I hate what Rick did with them. I feel like their goals for the future do not align at all, and it is as if they together because that is what they are used to and not because they are in love. It seems like Percy is always trying to accommodate to what Annabeth wants and I think in the long run that would make him miserable, and those feeling will make worst a relationship that is already fragile.

In the future he is going to resent her so bad, because we already see that he doesn't feel comfortable joking/talking about some topics because Annabeth gets mad, now add him feeling like he has to follow everything she says or do just to be "the perfect boyfriend". It is a recipe for disaster

AnnieLuke (Annabeth x Luke)

1/10 this one is complicated. The thing is that I understand the appeal of a childhood besfrieds to lovers, I love those, BUT Luke never saw Annabeth as anything but a little sister. That + the fact that their relationship became toxic, it just make me uncomfortable. Sorry Annie, but this one is not the one, at least in my opinion (and in Luke's lmao)

Perluke (Percy x Luke)

4/10 I see you fans of friends to enemies to lovers or friends to lovers to enemies, I get it, but to me this one lacks that je ne sais quoi to make it appealing. But I can understand why some people like it. And I am part of the team "Percy had a crush on Luke yet he was the last to know"

Percico (Percy x Nico)

10/10 they are my OTP. I like how they complement each other. They have the history, the angst, the complexity. I like the dynamic of two characters who went through a lot, but deal with trauma in opposite ways.

They are ride or die for each other, but they keep that information a secret from each other, which makes their relationship really fun.

Most importantly Nico thinks Percy is cool AF and he adores him just the way he is. Percy is one of the few people who tried to get close to Nico and to understand him.

Their empathetic nature would make this relationship super sweet, tender and calm. For example, if one of them need to rest or are stressed out, they can go to the other and they will know if they need to talk or just want to nap.

Bonus points because their relationship with each other's parents would make their relationship even more interesting and fun!

Perachel (Percy x Rachel)

9/10 love this one! My second fave Percy ship! This is Percy's loss, to be honest. Their chemistry is super natural and they are always having fun! Rachel seems like a low-maintenance partner, so being with her must be pretty easy. She would not make drama if Percy can't be there with her for some time because he has to save the world or whatever. I think he can chill with her, and just like with Nico, Percy just being Percy is enough

Valgrace (Leo x Jason)

9/10 What I like about them is that both are insecure about themselves but always see the best in each other. Jason is Leo's hype man and Leo is always thinking about how impressive Jason is. Where Leo is chaotic, Jason is calm. Where Jason is anxious, Leo is chill. They just screams healthy couple

Jiper (Jason x Piper)

2/10 the problem here is how the relationship started. Both of them are really kind to each other, but their romance is based on a lie, which neither of them is to blame for, but it just feels wrong. To me, after knowing how their relationship started, Piper seems to like Jason enough to stay a couple, and Jason was too kind and just rolled with it, and that is not good reason to stay with someone in my opinion.

Liper (Leo x Piper)

9/10 shout out to @maygirlsposts to make me see the light with this one! Before, it never crossed my mind they could be a couple, but gosh! They are so cute together!

Piper and Leo genuinely have a connection, they share sense of humor, they have been through difficult stuff together and are empathetic towards the other's problems. They have a healthy balance between being chaotic when they are chilling, and having the ability to have honest conversations when necessary. They are overall wholesome AF!

Extra points for being the healthy version of Hephaestus x Aphrodite

Jasico (Jason x Nico)

10/10 this one is not my ship,only because I prefer them as besties, but I see the vision of their shippers; and I give them a 10 because they are probably the healthiest ship Nico has, to be honest.

Jason is always so patient with Nico, and sincere yet kind. Is great to see Nico feeling at ease with him. Jason has the stability Nico needs in a relationship.

Both bring the best of each other, and push the other to do and be the best they can be!

Jeyna (Jason x Reyna)

8/10 oh what could have been! The tragedy of the lost potential! They were too powerful together and Rick couldn't handle that.

They have history together and understand each other deeply. They are both strong mentally and physically, so they could be the standard of a demigod couple. They are both healthy people on their own, so their relationship would naturally be nice.

Their love story could have been so interesting, like: separated by war and the gods, reunited by fate!

To tell you a secret, I see them as Nico's unofficial parents/older siblings. Basically, they both adopted him separately, protect him, and genuinely care about him. They would have been one hell of parents lmao

Jercy (Jason x Percy)

6/10 this one is fun! Again it is not my ship, but I like their dynamic. They give "Two bros,chilling in the hot tub, five feet apart cause they’re not gay" energy

Frazel (Frank x Hazel)

9/10 this is the only canon ship I like! Frank is super sweet and Hazel is always so kind, both are just wholesome AF! Like two teddy bears! I like that they started out as friends and both were seen as the "weird kids", that makes me think their bond is just genuine!

Lazel (Leo x Hazel)

5/10 they are cute, I just prefer them as friends. And not gonna lie, the fact that Hazel's ex is Leo's grandpa makes them kinda weird to me as a couple.

As friends will give them a 8/10, they need more time to get closer, but they already are super fun!

Fraleo (Frank x Leo)

6/10 They are funny! Like wholesome-awkward meets wholesome-chaotic. They just make me laugh because of how cute they would be, completely adorable! Too pure for this world!

I like this, but personally I like my ships with more angst, so I prefer them as friends. But you guys, their shippers, you must be the cutest, most wholesome people out there!

Leo x Frank x Hazel

7/10 I see the vision, but as you can see, I like Leo being their bestie instead of in a romance. But I understand! What's better than a love triangle? An OT3!

Pipabeth (Piper x Annabeth)

8/10 I like them a lot! This is the ship I like for Annabeth. In general I think Annabeth seems more comfortable with women. It feels like Rick wrote her as a lesbian-who-doesn't-know-she-is-one, but did so whithout realizing. Her chemistry with Piper (and with Reyna) just comes naturally and she looks like she is having fun!

Piper's fun personality complements Annabeth's logical one. Piper is all feelings, Annabeth is all brains, love that!

Also, just imagine their mothers' reactions when they find out they are dating!

Pipercy (Piper x Percy)

5/10 this is fun! But it needs that something else to make it super appealing to me, you know. Both are crack heads so they would be hilarious and a menace together! I can see the appeal! For me, I just prefer them as besties, like "Prepare for trouble! And make it double!"

Solangelo (Nico x Will)

3/10 in canon, 10/10 in fanon

First of all, can we talk about how fucking ethereal their ship name is? The ship name gets an ∞/10!

Now, the ship. I will start saying that I LOVE ships that are opposites attracts, but sadly this ship is a bit like Percabeth, but better. Let me explain. The concept is there, but at the moment of writing their romance, Rick kinda sucks. Genuinely think fic writers do a better job writing them.

For starters I have a problem with Nico being outed by Cupid. And I do not like at all that he doesn't have time to process that trauma, neither his crush on Percy and the heartbreak that comes after his rejection. Will is shoehorned into the narrative because "Nico needs a boyfriend" and Will is the only character available. He was a glorified extra.

This takes me to that I feel Rick thinks a relationship will solve all of your problems. I firmly believe that Nico needed time alone to recover from all of his trauma, which is a lot. But Rick's solution for this kind of stuff is "get a partner!". (Leo and Piper also suffered of this)

Is like: "Did you live through World War II? Your mom died and you were immediately stuck in an hotel for maybe one or two months? When you finally got out, were you in another century? Your sister died one week later? Years passed and you lived on your own for a while and felt scared and isolated from everyone you knew? Did you fight another war? Went to Tartarus and came back and then get kidnapped? You almost died, again? Had to fight again? Don't worry, having a boyfriend will solve all your problems!"

And I HATE IT! This is not Will's fault, it's Rick's. So I feel bad for not loving Solangelo in canon, but I really think Nico needs time for himself, he will have time for boyfriends in the future after he gets in a better head space.

Conclusion Will and Nico deserve better writers.

All respect friend, Ship percico or whatever feel free but the card of "they grown up and wow Nico is mature now so it fix everything" sounds like a groomer ass thing to say😭 Children see older people as an authority figure (and I'm not talking about the child wanting to obey the older person or anything like that) and first impressions are very important to a child. There is an unbalance of power. Nico was in a very vulnerable stage of growth (mentally) and immediately saw Percy as some kind of example. In general, our first impressions are very important in interpersonal relationships, we "add" more things or learn to interpret this first impression by another view. Any way or another, Percy canonically still see Nico as that lil kid and this is doesn't change at one night, or even 2 years see each other. If you imagine a scenario where they doesn't see (literally doesn't look at each other or doesn't hear about each other) it's normal (and expected) that this image of kid Nico fades away. That's not hate to the ship or anything :) I just think we shouldn't be talking about "getting mature" and interpersonal relationships as something so easy like "wow I see this person get mature now I magically doesn't mind about everything I've seen along the years". Like, ship everything you want unless that this considers, normalizes or influences violent behavior (pedo, aggressive husband, taking advantage of a vulnerable person etc etc).

Thanks, Anon. I liked your point of view and also respect it. I actually don't ship this couple, but i have an opinion about it. I guess it's really complicated to decide what would actually happen. In real life or fictional perspective. I know that Nico saw Percy as kind of a hero figure in the beginning and it could have influenced his perspective or that Percy could still see him as a child or something like that. I guess only time could tell, you know? After they get some therapy and discover by themselves what they really want for Life or Nico realising that his feelings for Percy never existed. It was just an imagination that he created for himself due to his admiration or if his feelings were real, you know? About Percy, it can depend too. If he ever separated from Annabeth and tried to open his mind to different things and didn't see Nico for so many years, i guess perspectives can change in your right time, slowly. No rush. I'm not trying to say they would work or not. Only that is complicated for others to judge because of the age, but if two adult people love each other (in a ship/fic or even real life), so why not?

Because from i got, Nico and Will didn't have much development either. They have a book together, if i'm not mistaken. But, i still didn't read it. My point is that if a couple like this got together, why not two heroes that have more history together (maybe)?

The same could happen to friends. Who will tell me that a couple from PJO that were friends didn't get together because they misunderstood admiration or loneliness with love? It's hard to say, but as i said, people change and mature. Not everyone stays the same as they were younger. Maybe in another universe (for percico fans), both Nico and Percy reunite again after many years, but they are different this time. They don't have the perspectives when they were young and kind try to reconnect with each other. I guess things like this happens to some people (not all of them).

It's like when someone dates a friend that is much older than the person, but the person grows up and matures trying to discover if the feelings are real or not. If the person was influenced by some kind of admiration towards the friend. So, this way, the person can separate the past from the present/future.

This also happens with Lois Lane in some stories, i guess. In the beginning, she used to like the ideia of Superman (the hero), but then later she learned to love him as Clark (who really is). From Nico kid to now, i think he developed a little bit. From Nico's part, we can at least see (maybe) that he is not blind to the ideia of hero, especially referring to Percy, as he used to be as a kid. I guess he understands that Percy is not perfect and has his flaws, but he still helps him because he likes Percy, be it as only admiration or another thing that could be worked years later for him to really discover by himself about his feelings. The problem would be with Percy's part. It's more complicated when someone sees the other as a kid yet. The only thing that could make this ship happen is a well written story.

Unfortunately, Rick already has his stories ready and his couples defined. This last part was just a theory of mine since i didn't read HOO books and to see how Pernico could happen following Rick version. In my mind, Nico only chose Will to forget Percy since Will is blonde. I don't trust 100% that Percy wasn't Nico's type. I guess Nico only lied and tried to move on with his life since he knew Percy was with Annabeth anyway. So, in my conclusion, the ship could have more chance to happen by Nico, now Percy...is another complicated story.

About the last part of your ask, i usually don't like toxic couples, especially in real life. Only in the fictional world, there are couples that i like and they end up having toxic moments/being toxic for each other or one towards his/her partner. I recognize that (different from other people that don't recognize this in their favourite ships or characters), but that doesn't mean i agree. If i have to say something negative about them, i do. I even post about ships that i think would be more healthy. Agressive husband and wife, pedo, a character taking advantage of another, a girl/boyfriend being bossy to her/his partner (that reminds me of some fictional/real couples) and many other bad things, i'm out.

Putting this one on anon to avoid the Backlash™ but genuinely thank you for being one of the few profiction people in the Riordanverse fandom who actually makes a point about how oversaturated the solangelo and percabeth is. I love percabeth, don't get me wrong, and some of the solangelo art has some true heart and emotion put into it, but acting like these ships are somehow "pure" and "unproblematic" is ludicrous. Will regularly cotton-wools Nico and underestimates Nico's ability to know his own limits. Annabeth can be downright possessive of Percy to the point it makes her aggressive towards others. Just because a ship doesn't involve *checks notes* a miniscule age gap between *checks further notes* characters, that are still BOTH minors at time of writing, and are *taps sign* capable of having a relationship that's entirely *taps sign louder* platonic and NONSEXUAL, doesn't mean it's absolved of any "problematic" elements. But I guess Will shows up and suddenly all the people who were formerly frothing at the mouth over percico or lukabeth have to shove their pre-2010s ship art under the rug and abandon ship lest they be seen as "pEdOpHiLeS". Like... I'm no lukabeth shipper either, I'm pretty much neutral on it, but it's like... who the fuck cares? Everyone in this series is fictional. No real people are being hurt. Sure, don't normalize anything that could be abusive, but abuse isn't intrinsically tied to an age gap of, need I remind people, less than five years. Half these people would probably lose their minds if they actually read the original Greek myths in which there's age gaps, incests and bestiality left right and center. Zeus turns people, including himself, into animals and coerces people all the time. So does Poseidon. Apollo chases after a nonconsenting Daphne. The original myths are full of rape and misogyny, people and animals being tortured, and many other things that by today's standards would be immoral. And yet people still love these myths enough to write various beloved media adaptions about them including musicals, books, videogames, tv shows about the children of these messed up and chaotic entities. Either way, OP, unless you're actively endorsing and condoning real world, non-fictional abuse of animals, children or otherwise nonconsenting parties, then WHO. THE. FUCK. CARES. keep writing whatever you want. or don't. i'm not a cop.

i mean…yeah, that sounds about right. it’s honestly a wonder to me how many people in the fandom are so extremely pro-censorship & sensitive to any dark themes in media when pjo itself is rooted in (admittedly glossed over for the middle grade audience) Greek myths that are…messy on a good day, lol.

also the toxic side of percabeth & solangelo intrigues me, but not enough to really explore it. plus like you said, the Backlash™ would be insane. but you make a lot of really good thought out points.

also, of course i would never condone the things i explore in fiction to happen irl—oftentimes some of the things are explorations of my own traumas that i wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy (not to say you need to be traumatized to write darkfic or ship xyz, but that’s another post i’ve made before).

i honestly really wish people would come forward as being profiction in fandom more often, because to be honest, i think we’re the majority. but at the same time i know from experience that the Backlash™ can be pretty nasty, so i understand wanting to stay anon.

Okay but like, for real. I live for Dark!Percy. And it’s super delightful that it’s an actual thing that canonically exists. Without needing to “corrupt him”—which is always a lovely plot to see as well. Demigods have so much to be bitter about, rightfully so. Sometimes it’s kinda cathartic reading a dark fic with that plot.

Headcanons. I love when in fics they make him bright and cheery, will laugh when someone insults him. But the moment someone messes with his family and/or friends? it’s like flipping a damn switch and his sadistic side rears its sleeby head. Bloodlust raises. Grudges are held.

The whole Loyalty-as-Fatal-Flaw? [chefs kiss] I’m a sucker for devotion. Especially when it’s taken to the extreme because it shows us some interesting aspects of a character, such as morality. Or lack, thereof. Really, such flexible thing when it comes to protecting those we love.

NEWAYS—

My top PJO (because we were talking about the adaptation and what not) Dark!Percy Moments:

Percy viciously sending Medusa’s head to the Gods as some kind of fuck you message, and giving it to Sally later on so she can protect herself.

Both fights with the Minotaur, but especially the second one.

With that being said, rest assured that, while I hold many things against Percy, I would never outright post bad things about him - UNLESS being specifically prompted/ questioned and in that case I’ve started putting it under the #percy hate tag.

I stand by the motto that there’s always someone who loves what you hate so I’d try to be as respectful and objective as I can! I do find Percy lovable at times and i’d hate it if i spoil someone’s day by my pettiness.
