Ungváry Krisztián és a Nyelvi Fordulat

Ungváry Krisztián 2023-ban tartott egy előadás sorozatot „Egy történelem – sok magyarázat. Interpretációk a magyar történelemről” címmel. Az előadások nagyon érdekesek és tanulságosak, és ajánlom is őket, a youtube-on mindegyik megtekinthető.

Az első előadásban azonban, melynek címe : „A történész mint „bíró”. Ítéletalkotás és történeti koncepciók”, Ungváry „sajnos” a történelemtudomány filozófiai kérdéseivel foglalkozik. Azért írom, hogy „sajnos”, mert úgy gondolom az előadás eléggé kusza és nem kellőképpen átgondolt. Ungvárynak szerintem sok módszertani és elvi elképzelése helyes, de teljesen szükségtelen ehhez azokat a „filozófiai” kérdéseket előrángatni, amikről beszél. Igazából egy ponthoz szeretnék hozzászólni, mert az egyik diáján Richard Rorty neve szerepel, és mivel nekem Rorty különösen kedves, ezért megszólítva érzem magam, hogy kommentáljam az előadás ezen részét, ami nagyjából 10 perc.

Elég nehéz belekezdeni, mert ebben a 10 percbe Ungváry elég sok mindent besűrít. Kezd a „nyelvi fordulat” bemutatásával, aminek levonja szerinte legfontosabb tanulságait, majd ezt szeretné használni keretrendszerként különböző idézetek elemzésére. Az idézeteket az általa „új konzervativizmusnak” nevezett irányzat illusztrálására használja, ami szerinte egy „posztmodern” jelenség, bár nem definiálja mit érte „posztmodern” alatt illetve azt sem, hogy ez hogyan kapcsolódik a „nyelvi fordulathoz”.

Elsőként Ungváry a filozófia „nyelvi fordulatáról” beszél, és ennek hatását vázolja a történelemtudományra. A nyelvi fordulat történelemírásra gyakorolt hatásáról nekem nincsenek ismereteim, szóval elfogadom, amit Ungváry mond, bár megjegyzem, hogy ahhoz a tanulsághoz, amit levon az előadásban és példákkal illusztrál szerintem semmi szükség a filozófia nyelvi fordulatát felhozni. Ungváry azt tekinti a fő tanulságnak, hogy a nyelvhasználat befolyásolja azt, ahogyan a világról gondolunk. Az ő példái a „patkánylázadás”, a „gengszterváltás”, illetve a „módszerváltás”. Szerintem mindenféle nyelvi fordulat nélkül is érthető, hogy akik ezeket a megnevezéseket használják, milyen színben szeretnék feltüntetni ezeket az eseményeket, én itt nem látom szükségét semmilyen filozófiai hivatkozásnak. Ahhoz, hogy tudatában legyünk annak, hogy bizonyos kifejezések lekicsinylők vagy rosszindulatúak nem szükségeltetik egy „nyelvi fordulat”.

Ungváry Rorty-t a „nyelvi fordulat” bemutatásánál hozza be, bár kifejezetten Rorty-ról nem mond semmit. A dián a következő írás szerepel: „A nyelvi fordulat – Valóság és a valóság megjelenítése közti viszony (Richard Rorty 1967)”. Több szempontból kérdéses számomra miért áll ez így a dián. „A nyelvi fordulat” egy esemény a filozófiatörténetben valóban, de ezt elég nehéz lenne konkrét évhez és személyhez kötni. Az ember leginkább egy listát tudna adni, azokról a filozófusokról, akikre úgy gondolunk, mint a „nyelvi fordulat” elindítói, ezek Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, illetve a Bécsi Kör filozófusai közül lehetne neveket mondani, mint Moritz Schlick vagy Rudolf Carnap. Rorty az „analitikus filozófiai” irányzat filozófusaként kezdte karrierjét, de semmiképp nem köthető hozzá a „nyelvi fordulat”, ő már egy következő generáció tagja. Ezek a filozófusok jóval 1967 előtt már megírták műveiket amiket a nyelvi fordulat részének tekintünk, szóval az is kérdéses miért szerepel ez az évszám a dián. Erre könnyű megtalálni a választ: Rorty-nak ekkor jelent meg a szintén „Nyelvi fordulat” címet viselő könyve, ami egy általa szerkesztett antológia, de Ungváry ezt nem magyarázza meg. A „nyelvi fordulat” kifejezés egyébként nem Rorty-tól hanem, Rorty állítása szerint, Gustav Bergmanntól származik, de talán ez részletkérdés esetünkben.

A dia további része is csalóka, ha már tisztáztuk, hogy Rorty itt csak azért került a képbe, mert ezzel a címmel jelent meg antológia kötete annak nem az volt az alcíme, hogy „Valóság és a valóság megjelenítése közti viszony”, hanem „esszék a filozófia módszertanáról”. Itt már úgy gondolom Ungváry a „nyelvi fordulatot” mint jelenséget próbálta magyarázni. Ungváry azt mondja, hogy a nyelvi fordulat fő üzenete az, hogy „A nyelv nem egy semleges közvetítő, nem egy átlátszó közeg, hanem egy homályos tükör.” illetve, hogy „A nyelv önálló szerepet tölt be a valóság értelmi feldolgozásában.”.  Az első mondatot azért vicces egy dián szerepeltetni Richard Rorty nevével, mert Rorty leghíresebb könyve a „Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature” épp azt kérdőjelezi meg, hogy az emberi tudás egyfajta tükre lenne a világnak. Rorty vitatja, hogy a nyelv szerepe a világban levő dolgok, tények reprezentációja, és így a tükör nem is lehet homályos, hiszen nincs tükör. A második megállapítás szerintem helyes lenne, annyiban, hogy nyelv nélkül nem lehetne gondolkodni a világról, bár nem tudom mit jelent az, hogy ez a szerep „önálló”. Az „önállóság” többnyire azt szokta jelenteni, hogy valamitől független, de mitől? Ezt a mondatot így bevallom nem értem.

Ez a két megállapítás helyesen írja le a filozófia nyelvi fordulatának mibenlétét? Igazából nem. Ha már szóba került nézzük meg Rorty, hogyan definiálja a nyelvi fordulatot az antológiás kötethez írt bevezetőjében (ez Rorty egyik legjobb írása egyébként): „Nyelvi fordulat alatt azt a nézetet fogom érteni, hogy a filozófia problémái megoldhatóak (vagy elkerülhetőek) nyelvünk megreformálásával vagy azzal, ha többet tudunk meg az általunk jelenleg használt nyelvről.” [fordítás tőlem] A nyelvi fordulat sokkal inkább szólt arról, hogy a filozófiai problémákat megpróbálták egyfajta illegitim nyelvhasználattal magyarázni, és így megoldani, avagy felszámolni ezeket a problémákat. Erre különböző formákban születtek próbálkozások, nézzük a nyelvi fordulat egyik emblematikus filozófusát: Ludwig Wittgensteint. A korai Wittgenstein azt kutatta a „Logikai-filozófiai értekezés” című művében, hogy mik azok az állítások, amik egyáltalán értelmesen állíthatóak a világról és mi az, ami „nonszensz”. Ehhez a kulcsot a nyelv logikai szerkezetének feltárásában látta. A kései Wittgenstein pedig azt gondolta, szakítva korábbi nézeteivel, hogy a filozófia problémái csak azért állnak elő, mert bizonyos szavakat kifejezetten olyan filozófiai értelemben használunk, amely kiragadja őket a normális hétköznapi használatból. Amit Ungváry mond nem jelentéktelen, de szerintem nem írja le helyesen a filozófia nyelvi fordulatát.

Ez után Ungváry különböző idézeteket hoz, amikről azt állítja, hogy a nyelvi fordulat tanulságai segítenek elemezni. Az első egy Békés Márton idézet. Erre megint csak azt tudom mondani, hogy semmi szükség a nyelvi fordulatot felhozni. Egyfelől tisztáztuk, hogy a nyelvi fordulat lényege nem az, amit Ungváry állít, illetve, bár nyilván Békés Márton használ retorikai fogásokat mondanivalója közlésére, amit mond empirikusan igazolható vagy cáfolható mindenféle probléma nélkül. Ungváry maga is megjegyzi, hogy Békés állításával szemben az Osztrák-Magyar Monarchia ugyanolyan liberális rendszer volt, mint az antant hatalmak bármelyike.

A következő idézet szintén Békés Mártontól származik, itt Ungváry már a „posztmodernt” is behozza, ami azért furcsa, mert a posztmodern filozófiának alapvetően nincs sok köze a filozófiában jóval korábban bekövetkező nyelvi fordulathoz, de Ungváry nem jelzi a témaváltást. Illetve ezt és a következő idézeteket Vlagyimir Megyinszkijtől, illetve a Magyarságkutató Intézettől az „új konzervativizmus” példáinak tekinti, ami szerinte egy „posztmodern” jelenség.

Explicit nem magyarázza meg mi is teszi ezeket posztmoderné, de szerintem ezt viszonylag könnyű kitalálni. A posztmodern filozófusokat gyakran vádolják meg a „relativizmus” vádjával. Ezek az idézetek az igazságot relativizálják, a „nemzeti érdektől” teszik függővé. Ami érdekes itt szerintem, az az, hogy ha elfogadjuk, hogy a posztmodernnek része a relativizmus, akkor valóban ebből a szempontból posztmodernnek lehet nevezni az „új konzervativizmust”, hiszen ezek szerint minden nemzet eldöntheti, mit tekint igaznak, és erről nincs értelme vitatkozni más nemzetekhez tartozó emberekkel. Ami viszont szembe megy a posztmodernizmussal az az, hogy a posztmodern filozófusok bizalmatlanok a „meta-narratívákkal” szemben. A meta-narratívák olyan történetek, amelyek a világtörténelem alakulásáról egy átfogó magyarázatot kívánnak adni. Ilyen például az, amikor a marxisták az „osztályharc” fogalmával próbálják megmagyarázni a történelem alakulását. A Megyinszkij idézet kifejezetten erre szólítja fel a történészt, hogy a feladat egy olyan meta-narratíva létrehozása, ami a "nemzet" érdekeit szolgálja.  Ha tényleg elfogadjuk, hogy léteik ez az irányzat, amit Ungváry „új konzervativizmusnak” nevez, akkor ez ezek szerint a legrosszabbat vette át mind a modernizmusból (meta-narratíva), mind a posztmodernizmusból (relativizmus). Ezt a helyzetet nem a nyelvi fordulat fogja nekünk megvilágítani, sokkal inkább érdemes az irodalomhoz fordulni, ugyanis ezt a fajta agyrémet csak egy olyan ember lenne képes művelni, aki mestere annak, amit Orwell az 1984 című regényében „Duplagondolnak” hív: „Megfontolt hazugságokat mondani s közben őszintén hinni bennük, elfelejteni bármilyen tényt, ha időszerűtlenné vált, s aztán, ha ismét szükség van rá, előkotorni a feledésből”. Ungváry Krisztiánnak teljesen igaza van abban, hogy ezek az idézetek problémásak és károsak, de szerintem "túlintellektualizáljuk" a problémát, ha azt gondoljuk, hogy egy nyelvi fordulatra van ahhoz szükségünk, hogy ezt belássuk.

A motorkerékpár-versenyzés ikonja és a földi sebességrekordok birtokosa, Munro motorosok generációit inspirálta a rekordok könyveibe való könyörtelen törekvésével. Overmono — Good Lies (XL)

On a more objective, scientific, world-perpetuating level, you can of course understand why pollen is good: Insects and birds and animals take it and transport it and pollinate other flowers or eat it for sustenance and maintain the delicate balance that is our circle of life. You also know it can directly benefit you via dietary supplements and medicines for everything from PMS to an enlarged prostate. But on a more immediate, visceral, emotional level: It’s not good when it’s everywhere, infesting your clothes, wrecking your allergies, blanketing you and turning the world to a hazardous haze of yellow. It’s irritating, in fact.

Overmono’s debut album Good Lies is pollen. I don’t just mean that figuratively; “Cold Blooded” literally appears on Spotify’s Pollen playlist, an anodyne compilation of assorted tracks that fit a certain history-washing aesthetic and work great functionally as Urban Outfitters background music fit to pass any 20-something’s vibe check. But even without the playlist, you can see the parallel, hear the connection, feel the album title’s perfection in your gut: This is a record that promises so much but delivers, upon repeated listens, so little as to be a strangely vacant experience.

It’s not like you couldn’t see it coming if you were paying any attention, though. Russell brothers Ed (aka Tessela) and Tom (Truss) have been veering steadily away from their engaging, more demanding early productions on crucial labels like Perc Trax, Poly Kicks, R&S and Whities (now AD 93) toward a kind of hands-aloft big room festival sound that’s been smoothed over and played out live to the point that they only need hit the button that plays Tirzah’s vocal from “Gladly” over the “Is U” beat to get crowds going wild. From personal experience, I can tell you a big room goes off when the drop in “So U Kno” happens. People lose their minds. It should feel monumental, and there’s no shortage of people out there that’ll be only too happy to tell you how transcendent it feels.

That it doesn’t isn’t strictly a problem with yours truly reporting from the field; it’s also indicative of the listening experience Good Lies presents, which feels like a less creatively ambitious, more sonically conservative rendition of Water the Planets. That concise 25-minute mix from late 2016, when the duo was still trying to figure their big room sound out, remains one of the best arguments for why Overmono was so great for years: You’d get a stretch of rhythms that had you invariably nodding your head along to gently evolving and mutating melodies that could get stuck in your head for days after the fact. Think of the muscular “Powder Dry” or the Nintendo pop of “Catapult” or the song that made me a believer, the simple and soaring “U-Plastics.”

Little such surprises exist here, and that’s not because followers of the group had already heard half the tracks present before the full-length appeared. Even St. Panther, the only official collaborator on the album, has her vocals pitched into a homogenous blur at a deliberate emotional remove, submerged behind percolating synths and carefully programmed percussion. From Slowthai to Smerz to Miraa May to Kelly Erez to Casisdead, the template of “evocative” vocal snippets floating disconnectedly above the music is established immediately, a death grip maintained that suffocates out the creative spark that could’ve been here instead. Of that gaggle of tracks, “Calling Out” does the best in a vacuum, a massive track that stands out even in the context of the album and one that’d be immediately noticeable in any DJ’s set.

Only “Vermonly” really feels like it breaks free from the shackles of the established template here. A drumless drift late in the tracklist that feels like a breath of fresh air for its reliance on the army of synths Overmono relies upon rather than the cheap gesture of yet another sampled vocal feels novel in context. It’s a brief moment of respite from the relentless yet strangely underwhelming monotony of the rest of the record. Naturally, first-week sales were through the roof and it’s evident the group has never been bigger; that such success should happen to these guys is ultimately good, probably, but that it should happen via a record so devoid of personality it automatically assumes the role of background music isn’t. It’s irritating, in fact.

Imagine you and Rhett are coming home one night and you're heading to the Handsome Gambler to get Royal's food order when something suddenly catches your attention. Rhett looks closer and he's in total shock. In a box, amongst a bunch of raggy looking pieces of cloth is a tiny little baby boy who appears to have been born early.....like scarily early.

You two immediately take the box to the police precinct where, luckily for Rhett, one of his grade school buddies is one of the officers on duty. Later on the baby is brought to the hospital and put in an incubator but Rhett refuses to leave the little one at all.

You two spend day and night with the baby, not surprised at all when Rhett's buddy informs you that the birth parents have both been arrested for a pretty lengthy list of other charges. You and Rhett still refuse to give up on the little boy and pretty soon it's a very long, very drawn out battle before you finally become the adopted parents of Dallas Russell Abbott.

It's not long before you and Rhett are able to hold him outside of his incubator and even then, he's still very small. Rhett hears him cry and is soon brought to tears himself, a little embarrassed because Royal's right next to him, snapping photos on his phone, but Royal tells him it's ok.

Fast forward to twenty one years later. Dallas is now a man who looks like he could be yours and Rhett's son already and a bullrider in his own right, engaged to a young Nez Perce girl who's currently serving in the Wyoming National Guard. She's in the stands with you, Rhett and the older kids in your brood, watching their little brother take first place in the rodeo.

I really hate to hit the feels so hard Sebbie, but this thought has me in a chokehold along with Preacher!Rhett, that came out amazing by they way!!!!!

The Misfits (1961) - Flawed but emblematic

In 2022, Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling" has been making more headlines about the immense behind the scene drama than its filmmaking achievements. It may be the most recent case of "backstage issues overshadowing the movie itself" but it certainly ain't the first, more less the most intriguing. In 1961, John Huston's "The Misfits" was released and became way more remembered for being full of production issues and the very last movie of mythic Hollywood stars Marilyn Monroe and Clark Cable than for its tale of four lost souls wandering in Nevada.

So what is this movie all about after all?

"The Misfits" is a drama/western about a recently divorced woman named Roslyn (Monroe) who meets war-veteran widow Guido (Eli Wallach) and aging cowboy Gay (Cable) and, having not a single idea of what to do with her own life, goes on a series of little adventures with them, picking up another lost cowboy (Perce, played by Montgomery Clift) on their way. With such a star-crowded cast and legendary director John Huston behind the camera, I had high expectations for this one but unfortunately I do not think it belongs to the "best works" list of any of those Hollywood icons.

It's not that this is a bad movie. It does have great cinematography and some very interesting scenes, dialogues and reflections. Each character has a sad, frustrating backstory and is somewhat trying to go on without knowing much what to do. In this sense, the movie is relatable and did not age at all. The dilemmas some of these people face are realistic and allow the viewer to connect with them even in current times.

However, it is too flawed to be regarded as a masterpiece. First, Monroe's character seems poorly written. Not only that, she is clearly written by a man. It's just so unauthentic how she makes some very valid points against some of the male characters actions (especially Gay's) just to run back to them a minute later, pretty much accepting whatever they give her. To me she's exactly how the average man of the 60s saw a women: she's caring, sensitive and sensual (but not vulgar), but also depicted as hysteric and resigned. What makes it even worse is that the scriptwriter was Monroe's own husband (!), although their marriage failed during the production. One thing seems to have affected the other, as Monroe was apparently disappointed too on how her character was written, while Miller seems to have incorporated some of his own disappointments about his then-wife in parts of the script.

Another thing I disliked about the movie was its uneven pacing. The first half has many scenes but feel too slow. I just kept asking myself "ok but how long I'll have to wait for something actually interesting to happen?".

I must say that the second half does deliver good performances, hard-to-watch scenes and actual drama between the characters. All that in a stunning landscape with beautiful shots from cinematographer Russell Metty. That second half does make up for the almost boring beginning of the movie. It does show melancholic performances from stars who were all in one way or another feeling as lost and in pain as their own characters.

I did find the ending lacklustre though, again because of how Roslyn actions just did not make sense to me! After that great climax scene with all the characters facing up to their personal values, trying to understand to what they stand for, to just end it like it was a story about a couple going through a marriage crisis seemed simply so...silly.

Ok so the movie has its moments and it's worth-watching for the sake of it, now what about the drama?

The fact that this movie was completed is already a great achievement given all the problems it went through in the production stage.

Starting with director John Huston, who apparently spent a good amount of his time during filming gambling in Nevada casinos, often showing up on set not in his best shape after his nights out.

Then, we had Marilyn Monroe. She was already notorious for forgetting lines, showing up late (or not showing up at all) and being addicted to pills and alcohol when "The Misfits" was shoot but this time seemed to be even worse. Her marriage with scriptwriter Arthur Miller fell apart in the middle of the filming and the pair stayed in separate rooms and wouldn't even talk to each other in the later stages of the production. Shooting was even shut down for two weeks while Marilyn went to the hospital to detox. Given all the problems Monroe was going through during the make of this movie, it should not be surprising that this was her last completed film.

Monroe was not the only star in this movie to be in pain. Montgomery Clift was dealing with severe alcohol and pills addiction too, his mental state never fully recovering from the shocking car accident he suffered in 1956. Marilyn even famously described him as the only person she knew who was in worse shape than herself. Although Clift lived for another 6 years after "The Misfits" , cowboy Perce was his last relevant role.

Lastly, we have Golden Age icon Clark Gable, who complained about Marilyn's dysfunctional behaviour on set and was also annoyed with director John Huston money-losing habits. Gable was approaching his 60s during filming , with a deteriorating health after decades of heavy drinking and smoking. The actor died of a heart attack just days after shooting wrapped, but lived enough to see rough cuts of the movie and be happy with what would be his last performance.

A többsége azért boka és térd közötti mélységű volt, szerencsére elég száraz volt az idő. A derékig érő víz kábé az elméleti maximum, amit vészhelyzetben még meg lehet kockáztatni, minden ennél mélyebb víz már big no-no. Hideg, erős a sodrása, pikpakk meg tud halni így az ember.

Ilyenkor természetesen mindig jót kuncog az ember a mindenféle vibram meg goretex meg ígyvízálló-úgyvízálló csodabakancsokon, ezek remek dolgok, viszont sokkal lassabban száradnak meg, mint bármi más, a víz meg azokba is pont úgy bemegy. 

Az első crossing a nehéz, amikor a száraz zokniba és bakancsba jön be a friss patakvíz, utána az összes többi már inkább arról szól, hogy ne lépjél billegő kőre, a tizedik után elkezd jól is esni a friss víz a lábbeliben, ami kicsit lehűti az addigra nagyjából testhőmérsékletűre langyosodó előző adag vizet, hűsíti a szúnyogcsípéseket és a rengeteg felhámsérülést, amit a bush lawyer meg a kibaszott ongaonga okoz a baki meg a comb közötti részen.

A kaland másik kényelmetlen aspektusa, hogy a bakancsok és a zoknik nyilván nem száradnak meg éjszaka, úgyhogy reggel, amikor kimászol a kényelmes meleg hálózsákból, akkor fel kell húzni a lábra a kb. 10 fokos, vizes zoknit és aztán arra a csicsogó bakancsot. Az Indian Motorcycle legendája, Burt Munro bekerült a Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hírességek Csarnokába

Az Indian Motorcycle ünnepli Burt Munro beiktatását a Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame-be.
