many things about the chronicles of Narnia made me irrevocably insane at the small age of six years old but one of the big ones was the bit in prince Caspian where caspian blows susan's horn to try and summon help and it summons the pevensie kids like. that's crazy ok. that's insane. imagine at 12 years old you're given a horn thats purpose is basically summoning divine intervention & then years later someone blows it and summons YOU . I'm crazy !

can't express accurately how happy it makes me that c.s. lewis did not leave room for many interpretations in narnia. it's christian and you can't get around it. susan chose to care more about worldly things than what matters and he said what he said. the lion is Jesus. evil is evil and good is good and people have to choose. and that makes some readers angry because it's nearly impossible to ignore and they want to ignore it. they want it to be something else and they can't make it something else without making it not narnia. love that. that is doing it right
#that's. how. it. should. be#if there's room for interpretation in your writing as a christian you are doing it wrong#if people read your work and get to pick and choose what it means and you left it OPEN to interpretation-#-and they can divorce your fantasy world from the truth? you are doing it wrong#looking at you john ronald reuel#readers you're upset because susan cares more about “nylons and lipstick” than Aslan? 1. that's not really what lewis said#2. you should be upset because she made the wrong decision#and if you're upset because you can't get around the christianity in narnia let me share something with you - that's the point#it's a christian series#it's telling you christian things. this is not lord of the rings. this is not Cool Fantasy World open to interpretation#you can't worship the fantasy world and ignore the christian truths#you can't separate the two. that's what it should be#that's what all christian writing should be#if you write something amazing and centuries later people host parades for your fictional world and there's no God in it? no truth?#wrong. you did it wrong. they should not be able to separate the two - unless the point of your writing was to write a cool story#congratulations you wrote a cool story. but did it point people to the truth? unavoidably? no? then what a waste of freaking time#what a waste of a beautiful God-given talent#okay I got off on a tangent#my point is: be upset because Narnia is Christian and you can't get around that with ease#I am so. glad. you can't get around that with ease#this is why Lewis is my favorite author in the root of me#he did it right. this is what we as christian authors should aspire to#not LOTR. Narnia. NARNIA.#christianity#narnia#the chronicles of narnia#thoughts in the tags#doverstar's thoughts#writing#authors

I want to be excited for the live action Little Mermaid so badly
The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with mermaids as a whole and will watch any media that has them. Hell, I own my own tails and monofins. But every time I see a gif or a video for the new Little Mermaid, I cringe
(btw, this is NOT because of the casting. If you're against this movie because Ariel is black, you're a racist piece of shit and this post isn't for you)
My issue lies with the CGI. It just looks so FAKE. We've seen through the course of movies and TV shows that use it that CGI does not age well, and that's because technology is constantly improving. What was impressive in 2005 is not impressive in 2023 (Just look at Aquamarine, another movie about mermaids). And the CGI on Ariel and her sisters already looks fake and the movie isn't even out yet!
Compare this image from the trailer
Tumblr media
To this screenshot from H20: Just Add Water (a TV show that came out in 2006):
Tumblr media
You can see the details of the scales in the second image
The first image is flat. Sure, it's colorful, but it's flat. It's fake. Halle herself is the most beautiful and alive part of the image, because everything else is fake
The difference?
H20 had costume designers, ones specifically trained in mermaid tail making, HAND CRAFT every tail on the show. All of the scales were hand laid, all the tails molded to fit the actors/actresses perfectly, painted by hand
Let's even look at someone with no affiliation to TV or movies:
Tumblr media
This is Mermaid Linden, a very well known (in the mermaid community) professional mermaid. You can tell her tail is not as high quality as the ones made for H20 (though it's still a VERY expensive tail) - but it still looks like it's a part of her. You can still see the details. Because professional mermaid tails are also all handmade and molded to fit each person. Even if they don't lay every individual scale, good professional mermaid tail makers are very meticulous about what they do.
This is what happens when Disney refuses to pay practical effects artists. We could have had beautiful, handmade tails that would look real on screen for decades to come and could be reused for promotional purposes - instead, they're underpaying and overworking their non-unionized employees to make CGI tails that don't even look real now.
(to be clear, I'm not shitting on the artists. As I said, they're being underpaid and overworked. This is not their fault)
And before anyone comes and says "But swimming in those is difficult!" Absolutely it is. You should never swim in a professional level tail (or even just fabric tails) without practice and training. Which Disney could have given the cast if they were willing to PAY people (the cast of H20 [a TV SHOW] literally learned how to be mermaids on set. It's been done before)
Disney's "Live Action" needs to be rebranded as "CGI with some real people tossed in" because that's all any of these remakes have been, and it's exhausting when I look at what we could have had.

not to carry on with my "lucy and edmund step into susan and peter's roles during the events of votdt" but in "prince caspian" we saw the pevensie siblings consistently falling into their throne order whenever they were near each other, always standing in that specific order whether on purpose or subconciously. throughout "voyage of the dawn treader", lucy and edmund continue that, only this time, thye fall into susan and peter's positions in the throne order, with lucy almost always standing on edmund's right side just as susan stood on peter's right.
but i think another detail, specifically in this shot from the end of the movie, is caspian standing in lucy's original spot, and eustace standing in edmund's original spot. caspian, who came into narnia as a stranger, and stepped into the role of king with ease, and who loves narnia and the narnians more than anything, and who vows to be a better king for his people. eustace, who was on edge, angry, and doubtful of everything around him for the first half of the movie, whose experiences changed him into a better person with the capability of connecting with his cousins.

the pevensies never getting to stay in narnia as long as they did that first time makes me crazyyyy like they had years. YEARS. and then they lost it and they got to go back but it was for a matter of days. days. just long enough to remember the things you lost. to find pieces of yourself again. and then they had to go, and peter and susan never got to go back. at least edmund and lucy were there for weeks aboard the dawn treader, even if it wasn't in narnia itself. probably it was more cruel than anything that susan and peter went back for hardly any time at all.

It's about Edmund Pevensie. It's about how he was a greedy, selfish brat of a kid. It's about how he allowed himself to fall into sin. It's about how he was willing to sell out his own siblings for a position of power. It's about how he became enslaved by the White Witch. It's about how he almost died in sin. It's about how Aslan died in his stead. It's about how Edmund felt true shame for his actions. It's about how Edmund repented. It's about how Edmund, the greedy, selfish brat of a kid, repented, and came back from sin, and it's about how he couldn't repair his relationship with his siblings or the damage he'd done, but that wasn't the end because Aslan did it for him. It's about how Edmund, the greedy, selfish brat of a kid, grew up and became a King of Narnia, known as the Just, because he knew what it was to act unjustly and decided he wanted no part of that ever again. It's about how Edmund the Just, a King of Narnia, came back to earth, but he wasn't a greedy, selfish brat of a kid anymore, because he who is once a King of Narnia is always a King of Narnia. It's about Edmund Pevensie, and why he's my favorite of the Pevensie Children.

thinking abt edmund pevensie.. who gets cranky when tired, who has a fondness for food especially sweets, who ate dirt he thought was chocolate.. thinking abt 10 yr old edmund pevensie who wanted to build roads in narnia.. thinking abt 11 year old edmund pevensie who fiercely defends his older sister, abt early twenties edmund pevensie who at all costs will protect his older sister.. thinking abt edmund pevensie who is a rock climber, who had once beat susan in archery, who had swiftly beheaded someone in battle.. thinking abt edmund pevensie who enjoys reading detective novels, who is interested in trains & railways.. thinking abt edmund pevensie who is his older brothers right hand man, who is his younger sisters most loyal ally,
