Or more broadly: the Viceroy Rule: How NASCAR learned from Indycar's biggest mistake, and how Indycar wound up reaping the benefits of NASCAR's solution.

So, our story begins in 1971: Marlboro is in its second year of sponsoring the USAC Championship Trail, Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing is the top team in Indycar racing with Al Unser as their driver, and USAC (particularly the Indianapolis 500) is starting to boom.

Al Unser had won the 1970 championship, the 1970 and 1971 Indianapolis 500s, and teammate Joe Leonard would win the 1971 championship on top of that.

Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing is becoming the first Indycar superteam.

And to top it all off, for 1972, VPJ would add Mario Andretti, winner of the 1969 Indianapolis 500 and 1969 USAC championship. Team owner Vel Miletich now had the last three champions and the winners of the last three Indianapolis 500s.

An expensive lineup, to be sure.

Thus, the team was happy to sign Viceroy cigarettes as their sponsor for the 1972 season. They would be on the cars of Unser and Andretti, while Joe Leonard carried on with Samsonite sponsorship.

This outraged Marlboro, because they were paying big money to sponsor USAC in 1970 and 1971, now for 1972, the top team was going to be sponsored by a rival cigarette company? It was outrageous, it was unfair, how can one be on the council and not be a master?

Thus, for 1972, Marlboro cut their series sponsorship.

Meanwhile, Penske's Mark Donohue would snatch the Indianapolis 500 away from Al Unser, while the championship would go to Joe Leonard once again - the one VPJ driver that wasn't sponsored by Viceroy cigarettes.

Marlboro would not return to Indycar racing until 1986, and at that point, it was CART, not USAC, that was calling the show. Furthermore, Vel's Parnelli Jones was gone, and the new super team in CART was Penske Racing. Marlboro would first partner with Penske in 1989, as part of a complicated swap deal with Patrick Racing, who ran the primary Marlboro car.

The deal goes as follows: Patrick Racing team owner would retire at the end of 1989, handing the reigns to former driver Chip Ganassi. Meanwhile, Penske would get driver Emerson Fittipaldi and sponsor Marlboro for the 1990 season. In the meantime, Patrick and Fittipaldi would get a Penske chassis for 1989, while Marlboro took over sponsorship duties for Penske's oval only third car.

The driver of that car? Al Unser, ironically enough.

Thus, for 1990, Penske would be a three-car team, with Emerson Fittipaldi and Danny Sullivan wearing Marlboro colors, whilst Rick Mears would continue in the Pennzoil yellow submarine for another year.

Around this time, Marlboro would also dump money into events as well: sponsoring the Marlboro Grand Prix at the Meadowlands, the Marlboro 500 at Michigan and later Fontana, and the Marlboro Challenge all-star race held at a variety of tracks in the late 80s and early 90s. Marlboro was all over CART, but they never became a series title sponsor again.

Marlboro money was all over the place, but that meant it was going all over the place as well, instead of being funneled into the series more broadly.

What could've happened in Marlboro remained as the USAC title sponsor? Would the USAC/CART split have even happened? How about the later CART/IRL split? Nobody can say for sure, but there was another series that benefitted greatly from those two splits: NASCAR.

The 1979 Daytona 500 held whilst the entire east coast of the United States was snowed in, ending with the iconic fistfight between Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers. It happened during the second of the three great schisms in American Open Wheel Racing (the AAA/USAC split in 1955, and then the aforementioned two) propelled NASCAR from a regional sport in the southeast into a national phenomenon.

The likes of Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarett, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, and Bill Elliott were already household names by the time the split happened, and then the likes of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Dale Jr. emerged to carry NASCAR into its 2000s boom period.

NASCAR was taking advantage of Indycar's mistakes, and they were also learning from Indycar's mistakes.

Enter the Viceroy Rule.

NASCAR was perfectly content with the likes of Coke and Pepsi competing with each other, teams could be sponsored by rival companies, but when it came to sponsors partnering with NASCAR itself, those all got exclusivity contracts.

Thus, with NASCAR Cup sponsored by Winston cigarettes, there was never a Marlboro NASCAR, no Players, no KOOL, no Mild Seven, nothing. The only tobacco sponsorship in NASCAR was Winston itself, and Winston owned Camel that briefly sponsored Travis Carter Enterprises' #23 car.

This was actually to NASCAR's advantage, because while the likes of F1, Indycar, and MotoGP clung onto tobacco money until the bitter end, NASCAR's teams, by and large, developed a clean image with sponsors like Home Depot, UPS, and DeWalt.

Even alcohol sponsors in NASCAR were, until the mid-2000s, confined to light beers instead of hard liquors.

The bigger hurdle was that Unocal 76 (and later Sunoco) were the official fuel of NASCAR, so they had exclusivity too. However, that wasn't a particularly big problem, as the other fuel companies just promoted their motor oil brands instead. Hence to this day, Joey Logano's sponsorship is Shell Pennzoil, rather than simply Royal Dutch Shell. This is also the case with ExxonMobil's Mobil 1 brand, and historically the case with Texaco's Havoline brand.

Thus, the Viceroy rule was initially to NASCAR's gain, at least until 2003.

See, in 2003, Winston's sponsorship of NASCAR ended, and for 2004, telecommunications company Nextel took the reins. This caused a problem, since a lot of NASCAR teams' clean sponsors were in the telecommunications industry.

NASCAR's solution was for the likes of Cingular Wireless, on Robby Gordon's #31 for Richard Childress Racing and Alltel, on Ryan Newman's #12 for Penske Racing, was to grandfather in these deals signed before Nextel took over.

The problem with that is that the 2000s were a time of massive telecommunications transfers. In 2004, Cingular Wireless would buy out AT&T Wireless, leading to the orange and black Cingular car becoming orange and blue, but come 2006, and AT&T was now buying out the entirety of Cingular Wireless instead. Likewise, Alltel would be acquired by Verizon in 2008.

Hell, NASCAR itself wasn't safe from it, because Nextel was bought out by Sprint in 2006, leading to the championship becoming the Sprint Cup Series in 2008 when the Nextel brand was phased out.

Unfortunately, that didn't gain RCR or Penske any leniency.

AT&T and NASCAR would go into a series of lawsuits from 2007 and 2008 before eventually settling with AT&T leaving NASCAR, while Alltel left Cup after 2008. Penske's #12 car initially ran a black and red Penske scheme that resembled the Verizon logo, while Verizon itself sponsored the Nationwide Series (now Xfinity) team in 2009 and 2010.

Also in 2009, a promising young Champ Car driver named Will Power joined Penske, initially as a replacement for Helio Castroneves who was in the midst of a tax fraud case, but later in a third car running Verizon colors.

In 2010, this arrangement would become permanent, Will Power driving the #12 Verizon Penske Indycar, a car he drives to this day.

From 2014 to 2018, Verizon would also be the title sponsor of the entire Indycar series. During this time, Verizon would also appear as a sponsor on Juan Pablo Montoya's #2 Penske during select races.

Thus, Indycar's biggest mistakes in the 1970s turned into one of the biggest Indycar sponsorships in the 2010s, one that continues into the 2020s.

A ‘Wireless Wizard’ Showed Cincinnati Driverless Cars; He Really Wanted A Death Ray

It was Monday, 23 January 1928 on Court Street in Cincinnati. Three Willis automobiles rumbled around the Courthouse Square, flashing their lights, honking their horns, starting and stopping, shutting off and restarting their engines, turning this way and that. Not one of the three cars had a human in the driver’s seat. All were controlled by a wooden crate mounted on the running board, receiving radio signals from a “Wireless Wizard” manipulating a small radio transmitter. According to the Cincinnati Post:

“The wizard would fling a radio spark from his toylike transmitter. There would be a responsive click in the wireless apparatus on the auto. The wheels would move in any direction.”

The Wireless Wizard was a young man named Maurice J. Francill from Toledo, Ohio. Francill arrived in Cincinnati under the auspices of the Post to demonstrate the power of radio to transform modern life. Francill spent a week in town, not only driving automobiles in circles, but sending a conductorless streetcar eight blocks up Sycamore Street. Each evening, he amazed crowds at the local Wurlitzer shop on Fourth Street:

“In addition to playing all manner of automatic music instruments by remote control, he will make a radio broadcast phonograph record and play it back to his audience in the flash of a moment. He also will offer light and sound wave experiments on the music store program.”

While wowing the crowds by demonstrating his radio-control box, Francill opined about the future of American life, once radio had saturated the nation’s infrastructure.

“The wizard, Francill, says that someday every woman will carry a wireless dual-phone in her handbag – that she not only can talk over it with the maid at home, but that she can see through it exactly what is taking place there.”

Francill predicted that every household appliance will one day be operated by radio, with vacuum sweepers operated at the touch of a button and basement laundry machines controlled from the lady’s boudoir. (Francill was less than forthcoming about how the dirty clothes would find their way to the laundry and how the clean clothes would return to the closet, but who is quibbling?)

In Cincinnati, Francill was a decided sensation, Over the course of his six-day visit to the Queen City, he presented 18 driverless automobile exhibitions, a sold-out demonstration of radio-controlled appliances at Keith’s Theater and inspirational visits to local high schools.

On top of whatever the Post paid him for this week-long residency, Francill earned some financial icing by endorsing local products. The Veazey-Miller Willis dealership on Gilbert Avenue provided the Willis automobiles for his experiments, with full tanks of Caldwell & Taylor’s “Original Benzol Gas,” lubricated with Pennzoil products and relying on Prest-O-Lite batteries. The Electric Shop contributed appliances for use on stage, and Wurlitzer touted Francill’s approval of the company’s home entertainment consoles.

Who was this “Wireless Wizard” and where did he come from? Although identified as an engineer, none of the newspapers suggested he had actually studied engineering anywhere. Records for anyone named Maurice J. Francill are sparse and sometimes contradictory.

That’s because Maurice J. Francill was the stage name of a man named Francis Cowgill, born in Marion, Ohio around 1896. Cowgill worked for a time in the factories around his hometown. The 1920 census records him as a foreman and inspector at an automobile factory. In 1918 the Marion Star announced that Francis Cowgill was “putting Marion on the map” by designing weaponry for the United States Navy. In particular, the newspaper reported that Cowgill had developed contact mines for the Navy that were “in actual use,” and was now pitching two types of aerial bombs to the U.S. War Department.

After the war, Cowgill launched a career in show business as a one-man vaudeville act juggling and wire-walking. He began adding magic tricks to his repertoire and started tinkering with remote control devices to enliven his show. That’s when he created the “Francill” name by chopping off the end of his first name and the beginning of his surname and splicing them together. Pretty soon the radio component of his act became the centerpiece and he was off on a decade of remote-control exhibitions – milking cows, baking bread, operating a laundry and running entire factories in addition to running driverless autos through their paces.

As World War II loomed, Maurice/Francis went back to his earlier career in creating armaments and created his electronic triumph – a Death Ray. According to the Cincinnati Post [2 March 1940], Francill offered his homicidal device to Ohio Governor John W. Bricker as a quicker, more humane, method of execution than the electric chair, but state law mandated the chair in Ohio. Francill claimed that his Death Ray had killed rats in preliminary tests.

Twenty-two years later, Cowgill was still trying to sell his Death Ray and told the Columbus Dispatch [29 April 1962] that, if he didn’t build one, somebody else would, Cowgill claimed “four or five others in this country” were working on one.

“It’s quite possible that the ray could operate off of a couple of flash-light batteries.”

Cowgill told Dispatch reporter Dan Clancy that the Death Ray he envisioned could do much more than simply kill people. It could cut down the Golden Gate Bridge, for example.

“You could just slice it off at each end and take another cut up the middle for good measure.”

Cowgill told Clancy that his Death Ray worked by disrupting the ability of hemoglobin to carry oxygen. Rats struck by the Death Ray fell paralyzed and then died. Cowgill claimed he never killed any people with his Death Ray, but confessed he’d thought of doing so.

The man born Francis Cowgill died in 1974 and is buried as Maurice J. Francill in Marion Cemetery. He appeared in court to fight a Marion traffic ticket as Francill in 1953, suggesting he had legally changed his name. However, the Ohio Bar Association sued Francis Cowgill in 1970 under his birth name for practicing law – advising inventors about patent regulations – without a license, so maybe he hadn’t.

Adding to the mystery is the outcome of his research on a Death Ray? Do plans exist? Was a prototype constructed? Were any more rats sacrificed? The answers are out there somewhere.

We recently conducted another training in Houston, Texas. This is the Miro sculpture in front of JP Morgan Chase Tower.  This sculpture was created by Joan Miro and is believed to be a male stick figure. In the background is Pennzoil Place, one of Houston's most award-winning skyscrapers. The 36-story towers were designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee and built in 1975. Designed as an optical illusion, the buildings are mirror images of each other and its appearance will vary depending on your viewing angle.

Sealab 2021 #20: “Tinfins” | December 8, 2002 - 11:00 PM | S02E09

Hey everybody. How are you? Miss me? Sorry for the lack of updates, but I live in Portland where a historic heatwave caused me to abandon my wife and cat so I could get in the car and drive to California and stay in my parents' house and sleep in an air conditioned room. It was either that or spend another night sleeping under a damp towel, which I'm pleased to report actually works pretty well, but I could not handle the existential horror of it all and spent an entire night sobbing quietly. Fun!

So maybe I owe the next sentence to my fragile mental state, but here I go. I just realized something about this episode and that it's actually great.

Listen: it's not without it's problems. Sealab's detestable art-style is all over this one. This one is, in fact, mostly new animation and it's all pretty hideous. But at this point in the series we should all be used to that simple fact. So I decided to focus on the audio of this episode and THAT is the thing that saves it. The script, which is imperfect but very funny, and the sound design are abso-lutely what make this episode great. In fact, here's a million-dollar idea: you know how people do those exquisite corpse style re-animated versions of cartoons? Buncha animators divide up sections of the thing and all re-animate it in their own style? DO THIS ONE AS ONE OF THOSE. Seriously. It's RIFE with possibilities and if the right people are involved, it'll be a blast to watch.

I'll get into this more: this episode takes the form of an entertainment news program covering the upcoming release of a film called Tinfins, which is a schlocky action blockbuster spin-off of Sealab 2021. The program is frequently interrupted with commercials that are either for Grizzlebees (a tacky Applebees style family restaurant), or some other tacky tie-in which also usually includes Grizzlebees in some way. Each ad is explicitly designed for a different demographic, including a fake news brief about how Americans aren't getting enough onion in their diet (the signature dish of Grizzlebees is a Bloomin' Onion style appetizer).

You ever get your oil changed at an auto-lube place and have to wait in the waiting room? If you're lucky, they'll merely be playing Fox News or tacky daytime programming on the wood-paneled television mounted in the corner. But even at the little mom and pop shop I used to frequent they eventually had their television get taken over with a proprietary closed-circuit feed that looked a LOT like this episode with Byron Allen interviewing celebrities on a promotional circuit sandwiched between insanely frequent ads and, yes, authentic-looking fake newsbriefs about how great Pennzoil is.

On top of the concept being solid, the lines are also good, actually. Capt Murphy just blurting out “This is my wife” at the end of a Wilford Brimley-esque ad aimed at patriotic rural boomer types that romanticize traditional values (pictured above). Or the animator clarifying to the audience that “Dr. Quinn is black”. There's also subtle little bits of bad editing, like when the fake news segment gets slightly cut off at the end, and the line Captain Murphy gives in the trailer where he says “Welcome to Sealab” in a particular way that seems like it was sliced out of a longer line, so it sounds SLIGHTLY unnatural. I believe the line is actually from the episode Little Orphan Angry. I know I recognized it earlier and made a mental note of it, but movie night starts in ten minutes so I need to wrap this fucking thing up and refuse to check on it now.

In a weird bit of synchronicity, I went back and read my old review of this episode. I confirmed that I never liked this episode much (before now!) despite liking some things about it. But I also complain about having to watch this one on my laptop, which I typically avoid like the plague. Folks, being at my parents house currently means that I watched this very same episode on my laptop YET AGAIN.

Worth noting that "Zorak falls in love with what he thinks is a woman that turns out to be a dude" had already been done 7 years earlier, in the SGC2C episode Urges. That's a different case where that's a man purposely disguising himself as a woman to keep Zorak from falling in love with an actual woman and getting his head eaten, which somehow is simultaneously more progressive AND regressive, and still feels a lot fresher in 2021 than the way Pepper plays out.

I forgot about that, or I would've brought it up! Allow ME to be the one to say... “yes please”!
