The Pennyfarthing Murders

This is inspired by a request on ao3 : of the lotr characters interacting with a tandem bicycle, and if they'd be willing to do it for their beloved.

I haven't specific if the setting is modern or middle-earth, so viewer's choice. If this is middle-earth I strongly believe it's a Shire creation (and that the pennyfarthing is a Shire creation too).

✧ Remarkably good. Slightly confused when you first ask him about it, but completely on board with the idea.

✧ The two of you have very different ideas of how much energy you should put into going on a bike ride.

✧ Keeps trying to dismount it by swinging his entire leg, will sometimes forget both of you need to get off at around the same time.

✧ If you’re getting on first he still holds out his hand for you, very steadying force.

𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬

✧ One of the few things elven grace does not transfer to is a bicycle. Especially having to share it with someone.

✧ He tries for the first time, because you asked him too and he loves you.

✧ Keeps forgetting that he needs to pedal. Or that he needs to pedal at the same speed as you.

✧ You two try it together once, and afterwards he kindly asks to not tandem-bike with anyone ever again. Reassures that it isn't you, it’s the bike.

✧ (Could be persuaded to try again with enough pleading/puppy-dog eyes.)

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐨

✧ Politely confused. Knows how to do it in theory, and is ok in practice.

✧ Asks you to slow down or stop quite often so he can admire the nature and the scenery, although there’s always an apologetic smile along with the request.

✧ Works quite well with a bike, but at the end of the day he’s more of a slow scenic walk person.

𝐒𝐚𝐦

✧ Slightly scared of it. But he trusts you enough to try.

✧ You can practically feel his tension at first, but in the end he enjoys it. 

✧ Enjoys it more for the closeness of you spending time together than the tandem bike itself. He’d be happy to never use it again, but won’t say that to you.

𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲

✧ He probably would have suggested it eventually, if you hadn’t.

✧ Remarkably bad at getting onto the bicycle. Seems to have some kind of special skill at not quite mastering it.

✧ Gets there eventually and is very proud of himself.

✧ Enjoys it quite a lot, although more for the novelty and chaos of it than anything else.

𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧

✧ Does suggest tandem-biking. Says it with that tone of voice where you can never tell if he’s joking or being serious.

✧ Thinks he can go faster than he can. Adamant the reason you two aren’t going fast enough is because ‘your combined hearts aren’t in it’.

✧ Overall it’s quite an enjoyable experience, and he’d like to do it with you again. (And now he can use the two of you doing it as a way to coerce convince others too.)

𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫

✧ I think he has an irrational hatred of tandem bicycles (well, bicycles in general). Has been asked before by Merry and Pippin and refused.

✧ At first refused you as well, but if you show enough interest he’ll try it.

✧ Boromir is actually decent at it and you’re not sure what’s going wrong, but after doing it once he is not doing it again.

✧ Apologises with a small kiss if you look too disappointed.

𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐫

✧ Also feel he dislikes bicycles. Just runs in the family. But it’s lesser than Boromir, so he doesn’t need much convincing to try it with you.

✧ As the two of you are spending time together he enjoys it, but there are things Faramir would rather be doing. 

✧ Does blame you for the fact Pippin is now suddenly asking to do it with him as well.

𝐄𝐨𝐰𝐲𝐧

✧ Very suspicious of it. But willing to try. After all, if she can ride a horse, why not something created by man?

✧ Surprisingly good at it, and Éowyn enjoys it more than she thought she would.

✧ Would still rather go horse-riding with you.

𝐄𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫

✧ Truly loves you. Truly does not trust the hell-creation you have wheeled out in front of him.

✧ “Can we please go horse-riding, my love? I promise it will be more enjoyable.”

✧ Says that he’ll ride it if you manage to prove it’s safe with someone else. You doubt he’ll keep this promise.

A/N : Never thought I'd be writing this, but here we are! Hopefully this was enjoyable to read, and the fact I don't write much comedy/crack isn't showing too badly. I feel that Merry & Pippin would both be very good on the pennyfarthing.

It is indeed a slur. The equivalence then would be a word which has been recently reclaimed.

I thought that was implied in my words but I suppose I could've been more direct in the meaning of "equivalence".

So, an equivalence would be if there was a word that is being reclaimed by the oppressed/minority group when it used to be a slur. If the answer is no, then there is no equivalence. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Yes, it is "reclaimed", it is not a black and white thing, it's a process, as many social and linguistics phonemenons are. Meanwhile, fag is not (being reclaimed, excluding personal usage).

Thénardier's "this one's a queer" is translated in Châtelet as "[He's] a fag" in the eng subtitles. Took me off-guard lmao
