Dinner tonight, Saturday, 15 February 2025:
My wife made a delicious meat loaf for dinner.
Kind of classic meat loaf— ground beef, ground pork, ground lamb, onion powder and garlic powder, some unsweetened catsup (not too much; tomato has carbs), chili powder, a little Allulose and citric acid.
Salad of chopped romaine lettuce, avocado, apple cider vinegar, olive oil. Plus a little left-over goat cheese.
Fermented pickle and juice.
I did half an hour on the peloton exercise bike, plus some abs and core exercises. Then I did some barbell deadlifts.
A couple of warmup sets, and then three work sets at an embarrassingly low weight - 75 lbs lower than what I was deadlifting 2 or 3 years ago. Ouch.
It has frankly been hard to get a regular, consistent program going - I try my best to follow the Starting Strength method. But I’m trying to get consistent again.

Ended up riding indoors today due to some things going on around me, BUT, I did a thirty minute class and managed to almost keep up! I'm so proud of myself, because I know I couldn't even keep up with a twenty minute class in the spring!
There's always progress, sometimes you just don't see it outwardly, and that's okay!

9 Best Peloton Alternative Bikes, According to Cycling Instructors in 2023: Echelon, Schwinn, and More- Raw Swag
There’s no denying the satisfaction you feel after a seriously good fitness class. When the sweat is dripping, your heart is still pumping, and you just know that you absolutely crushed it—you get it. Peloton has done an excellent job at recreating that feeling at home, but it comes at a relatively high price point that a lot of folks can’t justify: say, roughly $1,445 for the original Peloton…

The Benefits of a Home Workout: Fitness at Your Convenience
In today’s busy world, maintaining a fitness routine can be challenging, especially when the daily grind leaves little time for gym visits. This is where the concept of a home workout truly shines, offering flexibility, privacy, and cost-effectiveness. Whether you’re a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just starting your journey, working out from the comfort of your home has undeniable advantages.
One of the key benefits of home workouts is convenience. You can exercise at your own pace, schedule workouts to suit your routine, and avoid the hassle of commuting to a gym. This flexibility ensures that even the busiest individuals can prioritize fitness. For instance, equipment like the Schwinn IC4 Indoor Cycling Bike allows you to engage in high-intensity cardio workouts without stepping out of your home. Its compact design and Bluetooth connectivity make it ideal for small spaces and tech-savvy users.
Privacy is another significant advantage of home workouts. Many people feel self-conscious exercising in public, especially when trying new routines or using unfamiliar equipment. At home, you can focus entirely on your fitness goals without distractions. A simple set of adjustable dumbbells, like the Bowflex SelectTech 552, can support a wide range of strength-training exercises, replacing the need for a full weight rack.
Cost savings also make home workouts appealing. Gym memberships can be expensive, and additional costs like transportation and personal training add up quickly. By investing in versatile equipment such as a yoga mat, resistance bands, or a suspension trainer, you can create a home gym tailored to your needs without breaking the bank. For example, the Gaiam Essentials Yoga Mat is an affordable yet durable choice for stretching, Pilates, or recovery sessions.
Home workouts are also time-efficient. With no need to wait for machines or navigate crowded gym floors, you can complete your routine in less time. Plus, the availability of virtual fitness programs and apps has revolutionized how we exercise. Platforms like Peloton or Zwift bring studio-quality classes to your living room, while tools like the TRX Suspension Trainer provide full-body workouts that challenge strength and stability.
Beyond these practical benefits, working out at home fosters consistency. Having fitness equipment within arm’s reach eliminates excuses, making it easier to establish and maintain a routine. Studies have shown that regular physical activity improves mental health, boosts immunity, and increases energy levels (source: Wikipedia). With this in mind, a treadmill like the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 can add variety to your regimen, combining cardio with the interactive features of apps like iFit.
Incorporating a home workout routine not only saves time and money but also promotes long-term health benefits. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle building, or stress relief, the flexibility and accessibility of home fitness are unmatched. Ready to start your fitness journey? Explore our reviews and tips at MyHomeFitPro for expert guidance and product recommendations tailored to your needs.
By embracing the simplicity and convenience of home workouts, you’re investing in your well-being, one rep at a time.

Ladies, let’s reclaim cycling.
By Cara Eckholm
Tumblr media
In the late 1880s, Victorian women became early adopters of the contemporary bicycle, and began to shed their corsets for bloomers. In 1896, American suffragette Susan B. Anthony wrote:
"I think [the bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammeled womanhood."
These early women cyclists helped cultivate the image of the “New Woman” — able to ride away from her household chores and oppression. Bike culture spawned a whole sartorial movement, chronicled through attractive ads of women in slick cycling gear.
But in today’s US cities, men cyclists vastly outnumber women. To fix the biking gender gap, we not only need better bike lane infrastructure but also to cultivate a new, aspirational image of the 21st century woman cyclist. On an e-bike, she carries her kids to school and rides on to work — and it’s cool, not an anomaly, that she’s doing it.
When it comes to biking, women are known as an “indicator species,” meaning the share of women cyclists is an indicator of whether a city is bike-friendly. In Copenhagen, where I spent my early twenties,  women cyclists outnumber male cyclists,  helping to popularize the term “cycle chic” to describe the local fashion aesthetic. I biked to work each morning in my suit and heels, and would pass mothers ferrying their toddlers to preschool in front-loaded cargo bikes. “The right to wind in your hair” became a calling card for an initiative to promote senior cycling.
By contrast, in US cities, male cyclists typically outnumber women cyclists two-to-one. That figure is even worse in my hometown, New York City: While biking to work has doubled in popularity over the last 10 years, the share of male-to-female commuters is stuck at a 3:1 ratio. These numbers are particularly striking given the affection many American women have for indoor cycling (women outnumber men on indoor bike trainers like Peloton.)
Why are US cities failing their female cyclists?
The answer is safety and social norms. After moving back to New York, I remember my first harrowing attempt to bike from Williamsburg to the Financial District, where I was working. I was berated by a driver who had parked in a bike lane, and had multiple near-death-by-car-door experiences. I was one of only a few women on the road as I dodged between cars and speeding men. When I finally arrived, I chained up my bike next to the Charging Bull, only to find it stolen by the evening.
Of course, safety concerns impact all genders, but research has found that women are more risk-averse in their decision of whether to bike. They have a right to be worried, according to Laura Fox, the former general manager of Citi Bike, the nation’s largest bike share program: One study showed that drivers are three times more likely to encroach on a female cyclist’s space than a male’s.
A key part of the solution is protected bike lanes, which are separated from cars by a physical barrier. A recent analysis of Citi Bike data found the installation of dedicated cycling infrastructure increased women’s cycling participation by an additional 4% to 6%. An even larger increase was observed on routes for which more than 80% of the mileage can be ridden on a protected path.
The good news is that there is finally funding for bike lane improvements. Through the Inflation Reduction Act, the federal government has dedicated $5 billion for the “Safe Streets and Roads for All” program, which is accepting grant applications until July 10. Now cities need to do the work of applying for funds and convincing neighborhoods to give up parking spaces for protected lanes. With cash in hand, cities should accelerate their bike lane roll-outs, concentrating those lanes along clear commuting paths.
The installation of new infrastructure should have a catalytic safety effect: Women tend to be slower bikers, and the more women bike, the more other diverse groups feel comfortable taking to the road. An effective and inclusive bike program has more clunky frames than 21-gear models, more riders donning work clothing than spandex.
Still, infrastructure alone won’t solve biking’s gender gap. Research has found that women tend to make more trips for household support activities than men — and that many women feel it is impossible to transport children or groceries by bike. (Cities like Portland have tried to address the issue by offering things like a “Shopping by Bike class.”) Women also tend to harbor concerns about how biking to work might impact workplace appearance.
Tumblr media
The e-bike revolution could help in that process. The US e-bike market blossomed by 240%  between 2020 and 2021, and is expected to keep growing as states pass e-bike tax rebates, similar to the federal rebate offered for electric vehicles. E-bikes eliminate much of the physical stress associated with biking, making it possible to carry cargo like children, and travel long distances without getting drenched in sweat. Even the Amish have caught on, with some choosing solar-powered e-bikes instead of horse-drawn-buggies for shopping trips.
E-bike companies have started to make sexy ads rivaling those in the car industry, but they still largely focus on selling to men, who today comprise the majority of e-bike ridership. Instead of a chiseled man in a suit weaving through traffic, I want to see a woman in a shift dress, riding calmly and carefully, removing her helmet to reveal alluring, tousled hair, as she steps into the store or the office. More “road models” like Beyoncé, who made headlines in 2013 when she commuted by bike to the Barclays Center for one of her performances.
Some 150 years ago, bikes freed the suffragettes from the hoop skirt. Earlier this month, David Byrne — the former frontman of the Talking Heads and a staunch bike lane advocate — arrived on a titanium bike at the Met Gala in a crisp white jacket. Meanwhile, a motorcade of luxury vehicles was caught behind a line of climate protesters, delaying celebrities like Paris Hilton, with their bedazzled outfits. Perhaps next year, some women will consider biking. I am willing to bike in heels and haute couture, if anyone wants to offer me a spare ticket.
Cara Eckholm is a Fellow at the Jacobs Urban Technology Hub at Cornell Tech. She is a bike commuter, formerly in Copenhagen, and now in New York City.

1) Trampolining gave me fantastic calf muscles.
2) Peloton missed a trick - I don't want a screen that shows me cycling along a road or other people cycling. I want a screen that shows me trying to outrun monsters in a dungeon while I earn fireballs by hitting high speeds at certain times.
(yes, I'm more into the indoors for playtime)

Virtual Indoor Cycling Classes: A Transformative Fitness Experience
In recent years, virtual indoor cycling classes have revolutionized how fitness enthusiasts approach their workouts. These classes bring the intensity and community vibe of traditional cycling studios directly to your home, combining convenience with a high-energy workout. With their rise in popularity, virtual cycling has become a preferred choice for those seeking an effective cardio routine without the need to step outside. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, virtual indoor cycling classes offer numerous benefits that cater to various fitness levels and lifestyles.
Tumblr media
The Rise of Virtual Indoor Cycling Classes
The fitness landscape has seen a significant transformation due to advancements in technology and shifting consumer preferences. Virtual indoor cycling classes emerged as a solution for those looking to stay active in a convenient and accessible way. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this trend, as fitness enthusiasts sought alternatives to crowded gyms and in-person group classes.
These classes are powered by live-streamed or pre-recorded sessions, led by professional instructors who guide participants through challenging workouts. Many platforms also incorporate interactive features, such as leaderboards, live chats, and virtual group rides, to foster a sense of community and competition.
Benefits of Virtual Indoor Cycling Classes
1. Convenience and Flexibility
One of the biggest advantages of virtual cycling classes is the ability to work out on your schedule. No more rushing to make it to a class or dealing with commute times. Whether it’s early morning, midday, or late at night, you can hop on your bike and join a session that fits your timeline.
2. Customizable Workouts
Virtual cycling platforms often cater to a range of fitness levels. Beginners can start with low-intensity rides, while advanced riders can push their limits with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions or endurance rides. Many programs also allow you to adjust resistance levels and follow personalized training plans, ensuring your workout aligns with your goals.
3. Motivation Through Engaging Content
With upbeat music, energetic instructors, and immersive virtual environments, these classes keep you motivated throughout the ride. Some platforms even simulate outdoor routes, allowing you to "cycle" through mountain trails, city streets, or scenic coastal roads without leaving your home.
4. Affordability
While traditional gym memberships or boutique fitness studios can be costly, virtual cycling classes are often more affordable. Many platforms offer monthly subscriptions that grant access to a wide variety of classes, making it a cost-effective way to stay active.
5. Community and Connectivity
Virtual cycling classes often replicate the camaraderie of in-person group workouts. Features like live leaderboards, shared playlists, and virtual high-fives create a sense of belonging and friendly competition. Even when cycling alone, you feel connected to a broader fitness community.
Setting Up Your Virtual Cycling Space
Creating a comfortable and efficient workout space at home is crucial for a seamless experience. Here are some tips to get started:
Invest in the Right Equipment: While any stationary bike can work, many users prefer smart bikes or cycling trainers that sync with virtual platforms for a more interactive experience.
Choose the Right Platform: Popular platforms like Peloton, Zwift, and others offer diverse classes and features. Research and find one that suits your preferences and goals.
Optimize Your Environment: Set up your bike in a well-ventilated space with sufficient room to move. A fan, water bottle, and towel will help keep you cool and comfortable during intense rides.
High-Quality Audio and Visuals: A good pair of headphones or speakers and a screen for streaming classes can enhance your overall experience.
How to Get the Most Out of Virtual Cycling Classes
To maximize your results, it’s essential to approach virtual indoor cycling with intention and consistency:
Set Clear Goals: Determine what you aim to achieve—whether it’s weight loss, improved endurance, or stress relief—and tailor your workouts accordingly.
Track Your Progress: Many platforms offer performance metrics like calories burned, distance, and power output. Use these insights to monitor your improvement.
Stay Consistent: Establish a regular workout routine. Even 20-30 minutes of cycling a few times a week can lead to noticeable results.
Engage with the Community: Participate in challenges, join group rides, or interact with fellow riders to stay motivated and accountable.
Why Virtual Indoor Cycling Stands Out
Unlike other forms of exercise, indoor cycling offers a low-impact yet high-intensity workout that’s easy on the joints while delivering significant cardiovascular benefits. The addition of virtual platforms enhances the experience, making it more engaging and accessible. Whether you’re chasing a leaderboard rank or simply looking to improve your fitness, virtual cycling classes provide an effective and enjoyable solution.
Exploring Cycling Brands and Platforms
When diving into the world of virtual indoor cycling, you’ll come across a variety of brands and platforms. For example, CycleBar is a well-known name in the boutique cycling studio space. While their focus is on in-studio experiences, other platforms like Peloton and Echelon dominate the virtual space with expansive libraries of on-demand and live classes.
The Future of Virtual Indoor Cycling
As technology continues to evolve, the future of virtual indoor cycling looks promising. Innovations such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and AI-driven personalized coaching are poised to redefine the virtual workout experience. These advancements will make workouts more immersive, interactive, and tailored to individual needs, further bridging the gap between home fitness and traditional studios.
Conclusion
Virtual indoor cycling classes have transformed the fitness landscape, offering a dynamic, convenient, and engaging way to stay active. With options to suit every fitness level and lifestyle, they empower individuals to achieve their health goals from the comfort of their homes. By combining cutting-edge technology with the essence of community-driven workouts, virtual cycling is more than just a trend—it’s a fitness revolution that’s here to stay.

The Journey So Far - One Month In
In the inaugural post, I spoke about our grand plan - to complete all 150+ summer Olympic events over the next 4 years. Today, I'll talk a little about what the planned schedule looks like, what we're working on now, and what we've been doing over the past 6 weeks or so since the plan was born. When we started this, we quickly realized it would take a tremendous amount of coordination and planning. With so many events, many of which can only be done outdoors in warm weather, we'd need to really take advantage of all the time we had and to ensure we figured out how we could maximize our winters. In case you hadn't guessed, we don't live in an area where you can do these things all year round! With so many outdoor team sports, we'd have to ensure we were working on one of the sports really at all times, and we wouldn't be able to take a few months away from that. I guess I'll start with a list of sports that are on the Olympic schedule: -Aquatics: Artistic (Synchronized) Swimming, Diving, Marathon Swimming, Swimming, Water Polo -Athletics (Track & Field) -Breaking -Modern Pentahlon -Triathlon -Cycling: BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Mountain Bike, Road Cycling, Track Cycling -Equestrian -Golf -Gymnastics: Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline -Martial Arts: Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling -Sailing -Surfing -Racquet Sports: Badminton, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis -Rowing: Canoe Sprint, Canoe Slalom, Rowing, Coastal Rowing -Skateboarding -Sport Climbing -Team Sports: Baseball & Softball, Basketball, Cricket, Field Hockey, Flag Football, Football, Handball, Lacrosse, Rugby -Volleyball: Beach, Indoor -Archery -Fencing -Shooting -Weightlifting Our schedule is designed to prioritize training on strength and endurance for the first portion, and to tackle events that require a little less skill and fitness early on, and to build up to the (seemingly) most challenging events later in the program. The events that we decided would be the most challenging included diving, gymnastics, and slalom canoe. We also had to ensure that we learned some skills like fencing, equestrian and shooting around a similar time so that we could complete the very obscure modern pentathlon.
So what are we doing now? Well, for the last month or two, we've been working on a few things. Running, swimming, cycling and some weights. For swimming, we started at our community pool in the summer, and since have migrated to our local rec center. As I detailed in the first post, I really have never swam, and it's been a real eye opening experience. I started out managing only about 100-200m total over 30-40 minutes, having to stop for air each length of the pool. It's really amazing how far I've been able to come in just a short time, now able to go about 1,250m over 40 minutes. It's helped a lot since we moved to the indoor pool, as the lap lanes are great and there's so much less disruption from the surrounding swimmers. We took a couple of lessons at a local swim center, and I've finally been able to achieve some flip turns! I've been still struggling to achieve the distance without breathing difficulties without using the supportive buoy, but I'm getting better all the time. At our last swim lesson, the instructor introduced me to flippers, which have led to some new drills and things to work on. Katy, in the meantime, is really excelling here, able to get up to about 1,500m with only a stop or two to rest. Remember that aside from the ridiculous 10km marathon swim, 1,500m is the longest swim distance, so we're well on our way to achieving that already in a short time. Of course, when we attempt the triathlon (targeted for July 2025), we will need to navigate the open water, which will present some additional challenges.
In the meantime, we've been training on the Peloton, working on increasing our endurance and distance. I think that so far, we're around the 20-25km distance over an hour. Our cycling distance are 32km for the time trial, 40km for the triathlon, and then there's the 158km for the most recent road race. I think I'm just going to accept defeat on attempting the men's distance of 273km and go for the women's distance on this one. Of course we have a lot of work to do to cut our time down - it would be great to be able to achieve the 32km time trial in close to an hour.
Then, about 3-4 weeks ago, we started trying to get to running. This has gone less well. Neither of us have ever been runners, and while cycling and swimming are "low impact" activities, running is...well...not. My knees have definitely not enjoyed the early returns here, even doing some very light jogging on the treadmill for short periods, so this has definitely been a barrier thus far. I'm actually going to start seeing some PT to try and work on strengthening my knees and quads, because there's definitely going to be a lot of strain on the joints throughout this process, and certainly as we try and ramp up our running schedule. I'm hoping that I can figure out a way to do this without causing an injury, so more to come. It's been a little discouraging early on for sure.
Lastly, we've been doing some weightlifting, stretching, yoga and the like to work on strength and flexibility. We've done a little at the rec center gym, as well as some weights at home, and Katy has done some yoga classes at the rec center.
What you probably are wondering most about is what our first events will be! So here's the schedule to come. We'll be continuing to work on these four activities, and then this month (now at the beginning of October), we're going to try and pick up badminton. They have a club at our rec center, and I'm hoping we can find some generous soul to teach us how to play. They're there twice a week, so we're hoping we can go once a week or so to work on it through the end of December. And that's where we will hopefully have our first events! We will aim to complete our 3 badminton events (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles), as well as the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle swims by the end of the year. There's a new huge pool complex opening up nearby that we think MIGHT have a 50m pool, which would be great to use for these swims. It will definitely be a different experience than the 25m pools we're generally using for practice. Before then, we'll need to learn our dives for pool entry. We'll also start working on the other swim strokes, as we'll eventually need to do our backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and medley events. The swimming events will run through about May 2025, and we'll be planning to learn squash in the new year. A lot more to come after that!
Of course, we couldn't give up curling, and the season just started, so we've got that a couple of nights a week, on top of just regular life stuff, so we've got quite a full schedule. The plan will be to post maybe once a week with an update. We're still hoping we might get a video channel up and running on Youtube, though we've been a little reluctant, mostly because we feel a little uncomfortable filming training at the pool, gym, etc... Let us know if you have any thoughts or suggestions on that front. Also, if you actually do any of these sports and want to help us out either by teaching us something or if you know someone that would be able to help, please reach out!
