#ElCuidadanoIlustre (The Distinguished Citizen) is the last film that I watched at #PeliculaPelikula #SpanishFilmFestival2017 😉 It is a hilarious and thought-provoking comedy about Daniel Mantovani (Oscar Martinez), a famous Argentinian novelist living in Spain who wins the Nobel Prize for Literature and delivers a stinging acceptance speech about how prizes like this inevitably signal the decline of an artist due to the fact that his work can now be considered ‘comfortable’. As his popularity further soars, he rejects all kinds of  invitations from reputable universities and institutions except, out of curiosity, the invitation to confer on him ‘honorary citizenship’ award from the mayor of Salas, the hometown that he left 40 years ago. As everyone in town wants a piece of him, he, at first, obliges, giving a hilarious interview to a cheesy local TV station and agreeing to be one of three judges in the annual town art competition, while he catches up with his former best friend Antonio and girlfriend Irene – who are now married to each other. But simmering resentments turn the comedy to tragedy as he, getting increasingly exasperated, begins to war with the town that bred him and gave him so much material. The film then spirals into a dark cautionary tale about the dangers of revisiting the past, as well as a smart satire about how institutions and social groups perpetuate mediocrity in art and life. It also touches on issues of small-town conformism, the difficult trade-off between artistic freedom and artistic responsibilities, and the way fame has become a value in itself, detached from merit – and is therefore as easily the object of contempt as admiration. #LaNocheQueMiMadreMatoAMiPadre #TheNightMyMotherKilledMyFather is a black comedy about Isabel, an aging actress desperate to regain her former fame and glory, who organises a dinner in her country home to persuade a famous Argentinian actor Diego Peretti to co-star with her in a film written by her boyfriend Angel. Things get awry when her ex-husband Carlos and his kooky girlfriend Alex show up. After Isabel and Carlos engage in a heated argument in the kitchen, Carlos is later discovered collapsing and writhing on the floor so Isabel is suspected of rat poisoning him. To go on is to reveal too much about this outrageously funny but not so original movie. #Koblic is a former Navy pilot during the Argentinian dictatorship in the mid-1970s who participated in Argentina’s so-called "flights of death", a method employed by the dictatorship to get rid of its political critics, enemies, and undesirables by dropping them, still alive, from airplanes into the ocean. Koblic (Ricardo Darin) regrets his dark past and seeks escape in a remote rural village in the Argentinian pampa, where he helps his old friend with aerial crop spraying. His presence however, catches the attention of the corrupt and violent local marshal inevitably resulting in bloody consequences. #TardeParaLaIra (Afternoon for Wrath) retitled in English as #TheFuryOfThePatientMan is a gritty, brooding, and intense revenge thriller that appears authentically Spanish, set in a working-class barrio of Madrid, and depicted in seemingly two disparate and unrelated parts. It starts with getaway driver Curro (Luís Callejo) waiting outside the jewelry store while his cohorts are robbing it. Suddenly they run out of the store and sirens sound out. Curro speeds off the car in panic, crashing, and the police apprehends him. Eight years later, Curro’s girlfriend Ana (Ruth Diaz) lives a simple, hardworking life running a café with her brother Juanjo while Curro awaits release from prison. A quiet, well-groomed, and mysterious man named Jose (Antonio de la Torre) begins to spend a lot of time in the cafe. Jose gradually develops a romantic relationship with Ana who worries about the impending release of Curro. But alone at night Jose obsesses over a few minutes of CCTV footage of the jewelry store robbery. When Curro is released from prison, the film segues into its second half, becoming a road movie and psychological thriller, where Curro and Jose serve not only as antagonists but also traveling companions enroute to perdition and hell. The scene in which Jose's identity is finally revealed, with eight years of simmering hurt finally boiling over for him, is incendiary! How a seemingly helpless paraplegic like Joaquin can outwit and outfight the experienced criminals is the wonderful surprise of this expertly paced caper film with enough twists & turns to keep the viewers at the edge of their seats in a heightened state of suspense on this rainy and languid Saturday night. #ZonaHostil (Hostile Zone) dubbed as #RescueUnderFire is Spain's slick, riveting, and Hollywoodized take on the actual events that took place in Afghanistan in August 2012 where medical personnel of the Spanish Army, headed by a lady doctor (Ariadna Gil), were dispatched by helicopter to treat the injured members of the joint force of USA and United Nations troops. The workers do not know what's in store for them, or who is behind this reality show, performance art, or macabre experiment that moves the strings of this perverse little puppet theatre.
