Day 6 Prompt: "I can't wait for you."
Requested: Yes by @flowers-and-fichte! Hope you like it!
Summary: Summary: Peggy and her bestie are having a much-needed night out on the town.
Word Count: 1,520
Category: Fluff
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Peggy, come on!" I shouted, hammering on the door of her apartment at the Griffith. "I can't wait for you, let's go!"
"Don't you have to wait for me?" I heard her voice call from inside. A second later, the door opened, Peggy grinning at me with her hair, makeup, and outfit done to perfection. "Unless you intend to go dancing and drinking alone."
I crossed my arms and huffed. "I'll go get Angie. She'd be willing to come. And I get the feeling she wouldn't be intentionally slow in getting ready to avoid going out on the town."
Peggy sighed, stepping back from the door long enough to grab her purse before finally joining me completely in the hallway.
"We both know Angie's busy, otherwise she'd be coming with us right now."
"I probably could've gone to the Automat, gotten her out of her shift, and gotten to the club in the time it took you to get ready."
Peggy just shook her head with a small smile as she locked her door and the two of us finally headed out. After months of stress and work at the SSR, especially as the only two female agents, I'd decided Peggy and I needed a night out. Little miss workaholic hadn't been particularly on board, and she'd been dragging her feet the whole time, but I wasn't about to let that stop me. Now, finally, I'd officially managed to get her out of the house.
"So, where to?" asked Peggy, tightening her coat a little as we stepped into the cool night air.
"Sousa told me about a place he likes last week," I said. "We're going to go see whether or not he's got good taste."
Peggy gave a noncommittal grunt as I stepped out into the street and hailed a taxi. We climbed in and I gave our driver the address, then settled into the back seat with Peggy.
A few minutes into the ride, I caught her eyes scanning our surroundings as we drove. I sighed loudly and rolled my eyes before fixing Peggy with a look.
"What?" she demanded.
"Seriously? You're canvassing and scanning for threats. You need to cut that out right now. We're supposed to be having a fun, relaxing night on the town, we can't do that if you're constantly looking for threats to take down and improvised weapons to take them down with."
She huffed a sigh, breaking her vigilant scan to meet my eyes.
"I'm sorry. I know. It's just... we've been on red alert for months. It's a little hard to turn it off, isn't it?"
"I know what you mean. But you've got to try, Peggy. We're both going to go completely crazy if we don't take a little break now and then."
She hummed her agreement as she turned back to looking out the window, this time with less of an agent's edge. I smiled to myself. At least it was progress.
A few minutes later, the cab pulled up outside of a swanky-looking club, people smiling and chatting in incredible outfits outside. Peggy and I stepped out, and I was happy to say, we fit right in.
We got a few appreciative looks as we headed into the club shoulder to shoulder, to find the place absolutely swinging. People swirled around the dancefloor, the music boomed from the live band across the room, and people were laughing and chatting at tables all across the bar. I smiled.
"Well, what should we do first?" I asked, leaning in towards Peggy and raising my voice a little to be heard over the noise. "Drinks, dancing, or finding a place to sit?"
"Drinks," Peggy called back. "And then dancing."
"Yes ma'am!"
I started off through the crowd in the direction of the bar, holding one hand behind my back for Peggy to take if she needed it to keep from getting separated. I couldn't help moving to the beat a little as we snaked through the crowd, bobbing my head and smiling at everyone else. When we made it to the bar and Peggy stepped up next to me, I was happy to find her with a smile on her face, too.
"First round's on me!" I said. "What're you drinking?"
"Jim Beam," she said. "On the rocks."
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, even as I flagged down the bartender. "You're very predictable, Peggy. Next time, I'm gonna get you to try one of the signature drinks with me."
Peggy snorted, but I ignored her as I placed our orders. A moment later, our drinks arrived, and I raised mine in toast as I turned more fully to face my friend.
"To us!" I said, yelling a bit to be heard over the noise. "The two best agents the SSR could've asked for, no matter what any of those idiots in the office might say, and to getting a well-deserved night to have fun!"
Peggy smiled, and we clinked our glasses together, locking eyes before taking a small sip. Peggy sighed and leaned back against the bar, surveying the crowd before us.
"Thank you for dragging me out tonight," she said. I grinned, leaning against the bar next to her. "I don't know how I managed to keep from going insane in that office before you came along, but I'm so happy we can face things together now."
"Me too, Peg. Me too."
We stood together in comfortable silence for a few moments, sipping our drinks and enjoying watching the crowds and taking in the music. Finally, I sighed and set my mostly-empty glass on the bar behind me, then turned to Peggy.
"Alright, Peg. I don't know about you, but I think it's time to dance."
The corner of her mouth quirked up, and she set her glass down next to mine.
"I'd say I agree."
I grinned, then took her hand and dragged her out onto the dancefloor with me. She followed along, laughing, and we wove our way through the crowd until we found a good dance space. As soon as we found it, we faced each other and held hands, taking turns spinning each other around and dancing like maniacs to the beat.
I laughed as Peggy spun me, poorly, and I almost went knocking into a couple dancing next to us. They looked to be here on a date, and gave Peggy and I a dirty look, but we ignored them.
"Are you trying to go bowling for the people around us?" I called, laughing over the music as I came back towards Peggy and spun her out and away from me next. She laughed too, a carefree smile on her face that I hadn't seen in far too long.
"Maybe! Or maybe I'm trying to keep your reflexes sharp."
"Oh gee, thanks," I scoffed, rolling my eyes as we launched into the lindy hop. "Really Peg, I appreciate it."
"Good! You can repay me by doing my filing tomorrow."
I threw my head back and laughed, and after a minute, Peggy joined in. We lost track of time whirling across the floor together, both of us putting unique spins on the dances, since neither of us were very used to dancing the guy's part. We had more fun as a result, and while a few people shot us judgey looks as we flew across the floor, most people just smiled good-naturedly at the fun we were clearly having.
Once we both started sweating enough, we stumbled off the floor together, massive grins dominating both our faces. Peggy took a detour to the bar while I found us a table in the back to rest and catch our breath for a few moments, scanning the crowd again as I did. Sousa had absolutely hit it out of the park with this recommendation.
"Two waters, and two signature cocktails," Peggy announced, setting the drinks down before sliding into the booth with me. I smiled.
"Thanks, Peg. Cheers."
We toasted, then settled in together, laughing and talking the night away as we observed everyone around us. We made a few more trips to the dancefloor, spinning around with the same reckless abandon as when we'd started, and when we finally piled into a cab a little after one in the morning, we both knew the judgey looks from Ms. Fry would be worth it.
"We really need to do this more often," I mused, stumbling down the hallway with my shoes in one hand, my bed calling to me. Still, I paused with Peggy outside her door as she took out her keys.
"I actually think I agree with you," she said, shooting me a smile. "I haven't had fun like that since before the war. And maybe not even then."
"Likewise. We'll have to tell Sousa his recommendation was fantastic."
"That we will. But not until Monday. For once in my life, I'm going to do absolutely nothing tomorrow."
I grinned. "I support you in that, Peggy. In fact, I support you so much, I think I'll join you in solidarity."
We shared beaming smiles, then both disappeared into our own apartments. I immediately fell into bed, not bothering to change, a smile on my face. Sometimes, you just really needed a girls' night.

Ichikawa Reno knew something was off about Hibino Kafka when he came to work the next day, obviously sullen and downtrodden. He kept fidgeting with his wedding ring, something Reno knew he only did when he had something on his mind.
But he wouldn’t say anything.
At least, not until Iharu found out about his marriage three months later.
“You’re WHAT?!” He gaped at Kafka, who looked spooked. His chopsticks paused halfway to his mouth, and he glanced around at the room, which had gone dead silent in shock.
“I’m what?” He asked, dumbfounded until Iharu lunged across the table to grab his left hand and point at the wedding band.
“Reno said you’re married! Since when?!” He demanded, and now everyone was getting interested. Conversations petered out as they all looked over at the commotion.
Kafka noticed everyone staring and promptly panicked. Reno couldn’t help but hide a smile at his flushed pink face and neck.
“We’ve been married for four years! Together for eight!” He squawked awkwardly, and Iharu recoiled as if smacked.
“No way! I don’t believe you!” He complained and looked to Reno, “You don’t believe him either, right?!” He asked, and Reno shrugged.
“I’ve met her. She’s nice.” Was all he said.
That caused an explosion of noise.
And Reno noticed that Kafka snuck out in the middle of it all.
Of course, he followed him! He waited until Haruichi and Iharu were bickering and slipped out to find Kafka sitting against the wall just outside the dining room, staring blankly at his phone screen.
It was a picture of the both of you, his hand on your belly as the two of you celebrated finding out about your pregnancy. It was the one thing Kafka never shut up about until suddenly, he just stopped talking about it altogether. In fact, Reno was fairly certain that no one besides him and Kafka even knew about it.
Just what had happened?
“Is everything okay?” He asked and Kafka jumped, slamming his head back against the wall.
“Oh, Ichikawa! Yeah… Everything just… Got a bit noisy, is all.” He mumbled the last bit and that’s when Reno knew something was really wrong.
But, as clever as he was, he didn’t know how to make it better.
Hibino Kafka rolled over in bed until he was on his back and stared at the ceiling.
His apartment felt empty.
Cold.
He felt alone.
It had been four months since he had last seen you. By now, you would’ve been close to thirty-somewhat weeks along in your pregnancy. Had you picked out a name? Had you learned the gender yet? What was going to happen to your relationship with him? Were you really going to throw eight years down the drain?
He was just on the edge of dozing when his phone buzzed. He slapped a hand over it, dragging it closer to his face as he rolled onto his side.
Who was texting so late?
Probably Furuhashi sending a cat meme or something…
But it was like a bucket of cold water had been splashed in his face as he read the text.
It was from Haru. Your best friend and older brother. His brother-in-law.
“She’s in labor. She needs you.”
Straight and to the point, just like he knew Haru to be. Another text and this time it was the address to the hospital. But Kafka already knew how to get there. He could do it with his eyes closed. He hurriedly threw on some clothes and shoes and was out the door before he could even really process what was happening.
You were in labor.
But it was too early! An entire month early! Sure, the baby was likely going to survive, but would you? You were a high-risk pregnancy, especially with this being your first!
Would you be okay?
He made it to the hospital in record time. He all but sprinted up to the labor and delivery ward and met Haru in the hallway. He stopped him in his tracks.
“You came.” He said bluntly, and Kafka huffed,
“Of course I did. Is she okay?” He demanded, and Haru gestured to the room.
“See for yourself.”
He checked in with the nurse coming out of your room, explaining that he was your husband and that you were asking for him. He barely said his name before the nurse ushered him into the room.
You were tired. That much was obvious. The midwife patted the sweat on your forehead with a damp towel, coaxing you through a contraction as you clenched your fists in the blanket as the wave of pain washed over you. But when you heard the door open and shut, you opened your eyes and spotted him.
“You came.” You whispered, and he gently took the midwife’s spot next to your bed, reaching out to hold your hand. He ignored the pain of your hand squeezing the life out of his and instead smiled,
“I couldn’t leave my best girl. Not when she needs me.” He replied and saw tears well up in your eyes.
“But I’ve been horrible to you!” You begin to cry, and he hushes you softly, gently, like he is quieting your child, who is going to be here soon.
“I made a vow when I married you, didn’t I? I promised I’d be there for you no matter what!” He said firmly but no less gently than he had before.
Another contraction and the doctor instructed you to push. You let out a guttural scream as you tried with all your might.
And a baby cried.

part one | part three
The second best day of her life was the day Bucky came back from the POW camp in Europe. The day that Steve Rogers, her tiny, frail friend, was suddenly two feet taller and double the weight. It was the second best, but probably the most confusing.
To describe it, we have to start somewhere else.
Colonel Phillips sat behind his desk, the heavy weight of authority evident within his posture. His fingers drummed lightly on the edge of the paperwork in front of him as he studied the transfer forms with surgical precision. His words came clipped, almost dismissive, as he finally looked up at the young woman standing before him.
"Nurse Barnes," he began, his voice cold and matter of fact. "I need you to understand that you've been given special treatment here." His words were sharp, cutting through the sterile tension of the office. His eyes flicked to the top of the paper, then back to her. "I see that Sergeant Barnes is your husband. We understand him to be missing, but I am sorry to say... it's unlikely he is still alive."
He spoke softer, then. Like he had realised halfway through that the girl in front of him – she couldn't have been older than 25 – was likely a widow.
"Yes, sir." The girl answered, her words as flat and mechanical as she could make them. Her sweaty palms smoothing her creased white uniform.
"You'll be sharing a cabin with the other women on base – Agent Carter here will show you around, get you situated. You'll start in the infirmary tent tomorrow."
He dismissively waved towards a figure in the corner of the room -- an image of perfect composure in her neatly pressed uniform and pinned hair. The nurse suddenly felt inadequate, vulnerable even. She hadn't been thinking straight since she got that awful, awful telegram. The one she had prayed would never come.
Agent Carter stepped forward with quiet grace. Her smile was warm and genuine, a soft hand outstretched to the nurse, which she quickly shook with her own.
"Peggy Carter," she introduced herself. "Come with me, I'll show you to our cabin."
"(y/n) Barnes." The nurse introduced herself, unable to say much else in the wake of the worst few weeks of her life.
"So," Peggy's voice broke through the silence as they walked. "Where were you stationed before?"
The nurse swallowed hard, the words scraping out of her dry throat. "The French front." She could feel Peggy's widened eyes on her, but she kept looking towards the cabin they were marching towards.
She let out a quiet, nearly reverent sound. "God, so you've seen warfare then." It wasn't a question, rather an acknowledgement, a small recognition of the horrors of the front.
The nurse's heart quickened at the mere mention of her previous station, a cold shiver moving down her spine. She didn't want to remember the chaos, the blood, the screams. But it hadn't left her mind since the moment she was deployed.
"Yes." She muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. There was so much more to say than just ‘yes’, but there wasn't a way to succinctly describe some of the horrors she had seen.
They climbed the steps to the simple wooden cabin, Peggy opening the door with a soft creak. "Well, here we are."
The room was simple – clean, functional and small – but the nurse barely registered in the space.
"The top bunk at the end is yours." Peggy said gently, motioning towards the far corner. "I'll let you get set up, if you need anything let me know."
She swallowed, looking upon the nurse who seemed so... defeated. She spoke, perhaps out of turn; "Colonel Phillips hasn't given up on the men. There's still hope."
"Thank you," The nurse whispered, her throat too tight to speak. Peggy stepped back, giving her space.
"Take your time. I'll check on you later."
In the present day, her dreams – as they always were – were filled with memories of Bucky and the war. The sound of his voice was a particular issue, recently. She felt like she was forgetting it. The way his arms had felt around her on their wedding day, and then the day they said goodbye before he shipped to the Italian front and she to the french front. It all felt like the memories were slipping away.
But tonight, on Steve's couch, the dream shifted. She found herself walking through a foggy graveyard. She knew immediately that something was off, but it felt real enough. She could hear his voice – just faintly, calling her from a distance.
She tried to run to him, but her legs felt like stone.
"Bucky!" She called, nearly crawling along the floor in her desperation to get to him.
The fog parted just enough to reveal a figure. Not quite Bucky, but tall and hauntingly familiar. It was wrong, though. As the figure stalked towards her, she saw the glint of his left arm.
It wasn't Bucky. It was the man who attacked her in the cemetery, the one who had bestowed on her what she was sure was at least four broken ribs. His eyes were cold and empty as the all-too-familiar metal arm reached for her.
"(y/n)?" She felt something on her shoulder, and suddenly she jerked awake with a gasp, her breath coming in sharp, ragged bursts.
Steve sat in front of her, whispering soothing things, his hand on her shoulder. He had bags under his eyes, and didn't seem like he had been asleep. A lamp in the corner cast soft shadows over Steve's living room.
"Sorry, nightmare." She whispered, once she got her breath back.
He nodded, a sort of half-smile on his face. "I know. You were calling for Bucky."
His hand still rested on her shoulder, his touch steady and gentle. It reminded her of how she used to comfort him when they were just kids -- whenever he got into a stupid fight, or the neighbourhood kids took to showing him what for. The weight of it anchored her to the present, even as his mind drifted back to the foggy graveyard and the nightmare she couldn't shake.
She inhaled sharply, still failing at steadying her breath. "Sorry... it's just –" she faltered, her eyes on her lap as her hands shook. "It's like I can hear him, feel him. But I always lose him again."
He nodded, humming in recognition.
"I was thinking about the Italian front, the other day. Do you remember?"
He smiled, the memory of the first time he disobeyed orders to save his best friend. The day he promised his other friend that he would do everything he could to bring home her husband.
One of his greatest victories.
"I remember. You were so angry at us – and he couldn't stop grinning because you had come all that way just to tell him off."
Her pensive face broke, at that, revealing a reminiscent smile.
"God, I'd do anything to go back to that."
The atmosphere in the crowd crackled as Captain America walked back, his best friend at his side, and a sea of men trailing behind them. Their victory hung thick in the air.
"Prepare yourself," Steve murmured, his voice low but edged with something akin to amusement. Maybe he should have warned him...
Bucky's gaze flickered to a ripple in the crowds in front of them -- the crowd parted with the ease of moving water, but it wasn't a force of nature that cut through them.
No. It was something more personal, smaller than all of them but ten times as dangerous.
She emerged from the crowd, eyes blazing, shoulders tight with fury.
His wife.
"You two," she shouted, her voice slicing through the charged air like a blade, "are two halves of one whole idiot!"
"Oh my god, what the hell are you doing here?!" Bucky rushed forward with a rather aggressive passion, very nearly knocking her to the ground. If she wasn't so apoplectic with rage, the hug would have softened everything.
Unfortunately, she was very nearly vibrating with anger.
She screwed up her face, wiggling out of his touch. "I came to get you, James." She jabbed a finger in his face, her hand trembling with an uncontainable rage. "Do you know how worried I was," She frowned, "that damn telegram nearly killed me!"
The men around them chuckled before giving the not-so-happy couple some space. He smiled at her with a soft, love-sick smile. He didn't even have it in him to feel guilt, although he was sure he would eventually. He knew military transfer orders, he knew the bureaucracy behind all the paperwork. She had probably fought tooth and nail just to find her way closer to him.
"You transferred here?" He spoke as his hands moved up to hold her face, his thumb stroking her cheek as she furrowed her eyebrows and scoffed at him, slapping away his hand before turning away to the other moron in the situation.
The crowd around them had dissipated now, leaving only the both of them, and a much, much taller Captain America. Steven Grant Rogers. The kid she had spent most of her life protecting in some way or another.
"Don't even get me started on you." she snapped, her voice venomous. She stared him down, his new stature making no difference in how uncomfortable he felt with her intense gaze. He had the decency, at least, to sheepishly look at the ground. "What the hell were you thinking, Rogers?"
"I- " He started. He held his hands in the air like she was holding him at gunpoint. He wished she was, he was much better at that than dealing with grief turned relief turned anger.
She hissed, "Save it. Get yourselves to the infirmary tent, now." She turned on her heel, leading to where the men were beginning to line up to be checked over.
"Fury wants us to move to DC, says we’re better protected there.” After a full breakfast, the situation didn’t feel as dire. She looked at her friend with skeptical eyes, her fork clinking on the plate as she put it down with more force than she had meant to.
She tilted her head and squinted her eyes. “Fury’s up to something.”
“Why do you think that?”
“I don’t know if you have the clearance but…” She hesitated. The weight of the words she was about to speak was almost too much, but she couldn’t back down now. “We’ve had some intel. Someone’s using unauthorised SHIELD resources. We think whoever it is… is based at the Triskelion in DC.”
Her word’s hung heavy between them. She could see the suspicion on Steve’s face, the flicker of concern. He leaned in slightly, his eyes piercing as they met hers. “You think Fury’s hiding something?”
She sighed, dragging her hand through her fresh-washed hair. It was the last thing she needed, the organisation she had built up with her bare hands and dearest friends to be compromised. “I… ever since I stepped down as director, I’ve felt like something’s wrong. I regret putting Alexander Pierce in control, I’m worried it’s completely compromised.”
“I think Fury knows something I don’t – the question is what.” She shook her head, her words faltering for a second.
Steve didn’t say anything for a long time. He didn’t have to. He could see it in her eyes – the frustration, the fear, the doubt. They both knew that if SHIELD was the next big bad, it was going to be harder than just killing aliens that come out of a big hole in the sky. It would be questioning the very thing they fight for in the first place.
“Okay.” Steve finally spoke, his voice low but steady. “Let’s just be careful. We’ll figure it out together – Nat’s already out there anyway, we can ask her to keep an eye out.”
Days later, they were on the move. The rumours they were tracking seemed to grow louder, and a certain name that neither of them wanted to ever hear again kept popping up through the cracks.
HYDRA.
Natasha met them at the new apartment – they had decided to all move in together for safety. Fury assured the commander that there was nothing behind the move, that he didn’t expect anything from her.
“You think we’ll investigate the rumblings about SHIELD being infiltrated.” She frowned at him, finally figuring out his motive.
He smiled, his cards on the table. “Commander, I know you will.”
She couldn’t help but feel a disconnect between her life before and her life now. She didn’t know what had caused it – maybe something about the attack. She had been targeted before, the victim of many plots over the years. Who wouldn’t want to take out an enhanced, seemingly unaging artefact from a time period that was quickly fading from living memory.
But this one felt… different. She couldn’t help but think of Bucky when the knife-edged memory of her assailant made its way to her consciousness again. Something in the way he moved…
She looked up at the Triskelion, her new place of work. It was somehow familiar and unsettling at the same time. A place that had always symbolised SHIELD’s strength – her own blood, sweat and tears – now felt like the beginning of something far more dangerous.
Weeks passed. She almost forgot about the potential mole within SHIELD, she was kept so busy with work given to her by Pierce. She hated being around him, even though she had seen him rise the ranks as a young man nearly from the beginning of SHIELD. Something about him… she could tell he didn’t have good intentions anymore.
Steve and Natasha were starting to dig into the activities that SHIELD was covering around them. There was money, moved around so much that it was impossible to trace it to its destination. Weapons missing from the armoury’s logs. People who walked like they had more power than they should.
And then Fury was attacked in broad daylight. Declared dead. Steve crashed down stories into the foyer of the building, having been attacked by the STRIKE team that (y/n) once commanded. Pierce himself marched into the Commander’s office and declared she was being held on suspicion of treason – she would never have gone quietly, and she got a nice gash across her upper arm to prove it.
They found each other in the hospital after their no good, very bad day.
“Thank god.” Steve wrapped his arms around her as she found him outside the hospital.
She reciprocated. “Is it true? Fury’s dead?” She demanded, a tone in her voice that showed more vulnerability that she would have liked. She looked between him and Natasha, who had tears in her eyes for the first time in a long time.
He could only nod in response.
The truth hit them hard – the realisation that SHIELD had been compromised so thoroughly that it was completely unrecognisable. HYDRA was back, and it was using their own creation to cement itself again.
After that, everything changed. The triskelion was under siege. The situation had escalated faster than anyone could have predicted, and suddenly, they were fighting not only for their lives but for the world. They had picked up Sam Wilson, an ex-air force special forces pilot with helpful strategy ideas and even more helpful wings.
“So, how’d you make it to commander so young?” He had asked her.
Steve, Natasha and (y/n) had just laughed in response.
And then her world shattered even further, even more maliciously. Sitwell grabbed and thrown out of the car in front of a truck – a most effective way to shut him up. Each of them was attacked by an assailant that had haunted her since that moment at Bucky’s grave. She had been so distracted by the return of that memory that she hadn’t seen the knife coming.
One second, she was fighting with everything she had to hold her ground and protect the civilians around them, and the next – pain. Cold metal cutting into her side. A scream of shock that didn’t even escape her throat before her body crashed to the ground.
The world blurred around her. She heard Steve’s voice, desperate, calling her name as he fought to hold the line. And then… the mask fell. For a split second, she thought she must be hallucinating. The pain from the stab wound – and the steady trail of blood seeping through her top – was enough to make her think she could be.
She couldn’t tell which outcome she would have preferred in that moment – for her husband to be dead, or for her husband to be killing her.
The air felt too thick to breathe.
And then, she heard Steve speak his name, stopping in his tracks, too. And her heart stopped.
It couldn’t be. Not after everything – she had mourned for decades. So how could her dead husband, body somewhere in a ravine in Europe, be standing here, now. How could her Bucky – her wonderful, generous, brave husband – have caused the sea of thick crimson that had started to pool around her.
The man who had broken her ribs, and tried to murder her only weeks earlier. That same man, the one with no memory, with no soul, stripped of everything he’d ever been and replaced with a cold, mechanical weapon. A ghost from the past, a soldier she couldn’t recognise.
Natasha had told them the name earlier. A name that sat bitterly on her tongue.
The Winter Soldier.
Her chest tightened as the world seemed to freeze around her. Her pulse was pounding in her ears, and for a moment, she thought she might choke on the grief, the shock, the guilt.
Her hands shook violently as she struggled to push herself up, the pain almost unbearable, but it was nothing compared to the agony in her heart. The man who was supposed to be dead, the man who was supposed to be lost forever, was standing right in front of her — twisted and broken nearly beyond recognition.
But she would recognise him anywhere, anytime. Her Bucky.
The world seemed to tilt, everything spinning around her in a dizzying blur of emotions. How could this be? She couldn’t reconcile the image before her with the man she remembered, the boy she had once loved. She had grieved him. She had clung to every inch of him like it was her only lifeline – his touch, his smile, his cheeky jokes that made the burden of what they were just that little bit easier to manage.
Now, everything she thought she understood was unraveling.
She couldn’t fix this.
The sound of Steve’s voice reached her through the fog of her emotions. She knew he was moving toward her, his panic filling the space between them, but she couldn’t focus on that. She couldn’t focus on anything other than the man standing in front of her.
How could he not remember her?
How could he not remember them?
He locked eyes with her as he raised his gun. Those blue eyes that had looked at her lovingly since the moment they had met, now replaced with emotionless disdain. She decided that her only course of action was to close her eyes and accept whatever this cruel twist of fate had in store.
The Winter Soldier.
A name that would haunt her forever.
Both Bucky and Steve had been sitting outside the infirmary for what felt like hours. The sounds of the camp were muffled around them, but they could hear the laughter and celebration from the mess hall starting already. Closer, the occasional sharp sound of boots on gravel as men trickled in and out of the infirmary, patched up and sporting bandages in various places.
Dugan passed by, a small bandage wrapped expertly around his forehead. “Hell of a woman, Barnes. You’re a lucky guy.”
Morita, who had a nice bruise forming on his cheek, waggled an eyebrow. “Wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of her anger.”
Bucky only grinned and shrugged, his attention never straying far from the door. “Hey, you should be so lucky.” He smiled.
Finally, the line in front of him cleared. He stood, wincing slightly as his leg protested the movement, and made his way into the infirmary. The air was thick with the smell of antiseptic and sweat. The soft sound of hospitalised soldiers and the rattle of medical equipment filled the space.
And there she was.
The moment his eyes met hers, the world around him seemed to still. Her frown deepened, but the way she looked at him told him all he needed to know. She was mad. Madder than he thought he’d ever seen her, maybe aside from the time he and Steve decided to play baseball indoors and smashed her favourite vase.
Bucky took a hesitant step forward, trying to make light of it. “Hi, Nurse.”
She didn’t even look up at first, but when she did, the way her brow furrowed made his stomach twist. She motioned for him to sit, a sigh escaping her lips as she set the clipboard down next to him.
“Sergeant Barnes.” She said, a quiet edge to her voice. “What did they do to you?”
Bucky winced as she touched a bruise near his cheekbone. He had been through a hell of a lot worse in his life, but he wasn’t exactly in the mood to pretend like it didn’t hurt. “Nothing too bad. A little blood, some bad food… the usual.”
The corner of her mouth twitched like she might’ve smiled, but it disappeared almost instantly, replaced by that serious look. He could feel the weight of it pressing down on him.
She frowned. “You really shouldn’t joke right now.” She murmured as she worked, pulling out some supplies. The cotton swab was rough against his skin, and he winced as she dabbed at one the cuts across his eyebrow. The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy. Bucky could feel the tension even in the way her fingers moved – quick, precise, anxious.
When she finally spoke again, her voice was small and fragile: “I thought you were dead.”
The words hit him like a punch to the gut, his throat going dry. There was no anger to her words now, just a quiet, raw vulnerability. He looked at her then – really looked – finally seeing the bags under her eyes, her red-raw hands from sanitising and scrubbing them over and over and over again. The shine over her eyes from tears that she fought not to spill.
He leaned forward slightly, covering her hand with his. His thumb brushed over the back of her hand gently, “I’m sorry, baby.” His voice was gravelly but soft, “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Her eyes met his, and for a moment, everything else disappeared. The anger was still there, tucked away beneath the surface, but it was quieter now – he saw it for what it really was. Love.
She nodded slowly, swallowing thickly. “I know you say that,” She muttered. “But sometimes I wonder… how much longer I’ll get to hear it.”
Bucky’s chest tightened at the implication. He couldn’t imagine what she’d gone through in receiving that telegram. Living with the fear of her husband, gone forever. He knew that if it had been him in that position, he’d have gone mad.
He pulled her hand toward him tilting his head so their foreheads touched, his voice low and steady. “You’re stuck with me, you hear me? No one’s getting rid of me, not even you.”
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. They didn’t need to. It was just the sounds of their breath mingling in the quiet of the infirmary. There was finally a moment of peace amongst the chaos of the war, even if it wasn’t perfect.
But the reality of their lives could never stay far for long, and she pulled away gently, putting that professional mask back on. Bucky had to fight the urge to pull her back, to keep her in that soft, quiet space. She had always been strong and capable, but he felt that she was different now… hardened to the world in a way she wasn’t before. He wondered if he would ever see the sweet, innocent girl he left in New York again.
“I’m on the clock, Barnes.” Her tone returned to being sharper, but it had a softer edge now. “You’re gonna have to send Steve in. I need to check him out.”
Bucky’s mind returned to his alarmingly big, formerly small-friend. “What the hell happened to him, anyway?”

AN: In memory of our fave Friends actor, Matthew Perry. The guy who brought us all to laughter with the best character ever. RIP Matthew Perry you awesome legend.

18+ MINORS DNI
Maximoff Industries, run by the most respected woman in all of New York, of course her recent divorce was publicized and her children were also thrown into the limelight, which made having a private life extremely difficult for her and her family. But one thing she never expected to happen was meeting her secretary's room mate and best friend.
"Who is this?" Wanda asked as she spotted the taller woman standing beside Natasha.
"This is Y/N, my bestie." Nat smiled as she introduced the two.
"It's nice to meet you." Y/N held her hand out for the brunette to shake. "You also look better as a brunette, the red didn't suit you."
"Thank you." Wanda smiled as she shook her hand. "It was my ex who preferred the red."
"Well, he is clearly stupid." Y/N smiled as Nat watched the two. "I have to go back to work." She told them both with a smile, Wanda watched as Y/N disappeared down the hall, biting her lip before she turned to Nat.
"Does she work here?" Wanda asked her as Nat shook her head.
"She had an interview with Peggy in Finances for the assistant supervisor." Nat informed her.
"Can you ask Peggy to see me in my office please." Wanda told her. "Immediately." She entered her office, only waiting a moment before there was a knock on her door.
"You wanted to see me ma'am?" Peggy spoke as she opened the door.
"The interviews from today, who is the highest contender?" Wanda asked as she looked over the schedule she had received.
"There are two who would be extremely beneficial to the company." She started. "Pepper Potts, she is fresh from being Tony Stark's assistant." Wanda shook her head no. "And there is Y/N Y/L/N, she worked closely with Norman Osborn at Oscorp."
"Y/L/N is the obvious option." Wanda stated. "Hire her." She told her as she didn't want to hire her ex brother-in-law's assistant. So the following Monday, Y/N had carpooled with Nat to work, and the two made their way up to Wanda's office. Y/N sat waiting for Ms Maximoff to arrive as Nat started to get to work, sorting through Wanda's schedule for the day.
"Y/N, follow me." Wanda told her as she walked past the two. Y/N was fast on her heels, closing the office door behind her. "I will need you to fill out these forms for me, give Nat your I.D. so she can make photocopies for our company files." Y/N nodded as Wanda spoke. "Also, you and I will be working closely together as you will soon be taking over for Miss Carter, she is retiring soon and I need a fully qualified CFO."
"Yes ma'am." Y/N nodded as she took the forms from her hands.
"I will need the forms back at the end of the day." She told her. "And please call me Wanda."
"Of course Wanda." Y/N smiled as she gazed at Wanda intensely before leaving. Wanda couldn't understand the way she made her feel. She had never really looked at another woman like this before, she didn't even know it was possible since she was forced to marry her Ex by her parents or they would have disowned her. Of course with their passing, she had built up the courage to get out of her marriage as she ran the family business.
As the days turned to weeks, Wanda found herself working late on some days, Y/N was always the one who stayed with her, working on strategy plans to keep some of the company deals that they were at risk of losing.
"Do you want a drink?" Wanda asked Y/N who only hummed a quiet yes, going over the information she had before her eyes.
"I think we need to let go of some employees." Y/N told her. "Cut back by one or two in each department. We can split the work between the remaining employees accordingly."
"I don't want to talk about that right now." Wanda groaned as she took a seat beside Y/N, handing her a glass of bourbon.
"I didn't know you were a hard spirit kind of woman." Y/N teased her, watching as Wanda leaned on the back of the sofa. Observing Y/N's movements as she came up with a viable strategy for the company's future.
"How are you single?" Wanda questioned as she watched Y/N intently, the pen between her teeth as she turned to meet Wanda's gaze.
"I guess I never really found the one." Y/N shrugged. "My ex hated my dedication to my previous job, so she left me. Well, I caught her with my old friend."
"I'm sorry that happened to you." Wanda spoke softly as Y/N shrugged.
"It's ok." She smiled as she sipped her drink. "Love isn't for everyone."
"I think it is." Wanda spoke as she placed her glass down. "There is someone out there for each of us, it's just that we don't usually see what's right in front of us."
"And what do you see?" Y/N asked as Wanda inhaled deeply.
"You." She spoke as Y/N's eyes darkened as she gazed at Wanda's flushed chest, rising and falling rapidly. "A woman with strong arms and anyone would be lucky to have you. To just be in your embrace for the rest of their life."
"Is that what you want?" Y/N asked as she leaned in slightly.
"I don't know what I want." Wanda whispered, her underwear becoming damp with her arousal. "But I know what I need." With that she closed the gap, taking Y/N's lips on her own, her hands resting on Y/N's shoulders as she moved to straddle Y/N's lap. Her hands instantly held Wanda's waist before her hands ventured up her spine, holding her close as the kiss deepened. Neither of them were drunk enough for this to be known as a drunken mistake, all they both knew was they needed each other.
Y/N lay Wanda down on the sofa, unbuttoning her blouse as she kissed her passionately, their tongues dancing together as Y/N took all control. Wanda became a panting mess as Y/N's hand ventured under her skirt, pushing her underwear aside as her fingers ran through her folds, collecting the arousal before she made tentative movements on her clit.
"Fuck." Wanda gasped as Y/N moved her kisses down, taking a nipple in her mouth as Wanda arched her back, needing more than she was getting at this moment. "More. Please." She whined. "I need more."
Y/N complied as she plunged two fingers deep inside her, watching how Wanda's face changed due to the pleasure she was receiving. Y/N's name falling from her lips as she came undone, a panting mess as she soon calmed down.
"You taste so fine." Y/N smiled as she pulled her fingers from her mouth before kissing Wanda hard.
The next day, the two needed to set boundaries, so that was what they had done in the privacy of Wanda's office.
"We can't be anything more." Wanda told her as she sat in her chair. "I've just gotten through a messy divorce and I have two boys."
"I can be mature and just have fun Wanda." Y/N smirked as Wanda chuckled. "Besides, I am not going to blur the lines, I can keep my emotions in check."
Well, the two of them thought that was the case as what started out as quickies in the office turned into Wanda staying over at Y/N's and sneaking out before Nat woke up.
"We can't keep doing this." Wanda whispered as Y/N locked the office door before approaching her. A solemn look on her face at the realisation of the feelings the two share.
"Wanda." She started as she took Wanda's hands on her own. "We can do this." She held them close to her chest as Wanda closed her eyes, allowing Y/N to pull her closer. "I don't care that you have children or an ex husband. I know I will always be third."
"Second." Wanda corrected her. "It will be my children and then you."
"I thought the company." Y/N started as Wanda shook her head. A small smile on her lips.
"You will always come before the company." Wanda caressed her cheek as Y/N smiled, leaning down and claiming her lips with her own. Her hands soon wrapped around Wanda's waist, pulling her impossibly closer, causing a moan to escape Wanda as she felt the toy concealed within the confines of Y/N's dress pants. "Fuck, are you packing?" She questioned with a raised brow as Y/N just smirked, her hands trailing along Wanda's waist, pulling her blouse out of her skirt. Wanda's hands started to undo Y/N's blouse as they sloppily kissed roughly. Y/N had Wanda on her knees in no time, groaning at the sight of her red painted lips around the silicone toy.
"Fuck. You look so pretty on your knees for me." Y/N groaned as she gripped Wanda's hair, thrusting her hips into Wanda's face. "The great Wanda Maximoff on her knees, my little cock slut." Wanda moaned at her words, her cheeks flushed and her arousal dripping down her thighs. She whimpered as Y/N pulled her hair, pulling her away from the strap, the saliva leaving a string behind as Y/N brought her to her feet. "Face the window." Y/N ordered as Wanda was quick to do as she told. Spreading her legs as she looked over the busy city below, people rushed to and from lunch breaks as she stood bare against the cool glass. Her nipplea hardened against the glass as she moaned as Y/N slapped her ass before massaging it. "Such a good girl." Y/N bit her ear as she teased her with the strap. "Give everyone a good show, I want everyone to see how good I make you feel." Wanda moaned as the toy slipped past her entrance, Y/N's hands on her hips helping her remain steady as her hands were flat against the glass.
"Oh." Wanda moaned as Y/N snapped her hips, the toy moving out and leaving just the tip inside before thrusting harshly once more.
"Keep your eyes open." Y/N told her as she groaned, fastening her pace as she fucked her. The sound of Wanda's moans and the squelching of her arousal was music to her ears, her now favorite song. "Fuck. You take me so well Wanda." She went harder with each thrust, her fingertips bruising the skin on Wanda's hips. Neither caring for the people in the neighbouring skyscraper having a show. "You have no idea what you do to me." She groaned as she pressed her body up against Wanda's. The heat building between the two as Wanda's orgasm neared.
"I need to cum." Wanda whispered as Y/N grunted at her small tone. "Please let me cum." She pleaded as Y/N's head moved into her neck, licking and biting the skin.
"Let go for me." She whispered as she pressed tender kisses to Wanda's skin. A loud moan left her lips as she came, just in time for her machine to pick up a call.
"Miss Maximoff, the twins school had called, they need to see you asap."
"Fuck." Wanda whimpered as Y/N pulled out, Wanda was quick to gather her clothes, throwing Y/N a blouse, not bothering to see who's it was. "I have to go." Wanda said as she fixed her hair. "But I need you to stay here." She reached inside her desk drawer, a set of handcuffs as she pushed Y/N to sit on her chair, putting the handcuffs on her wrist as she handcuffed her to the chair.
"What?" Y/N tried. "Wanda, what if someone walks in and sees me? I am practically nude with a strap!! And I am wearing your blouse because it is abnormally tight!!"
"Please Y/N." She pleaded as she fixed herself. "Here, I'll be back as soon as I can." She places Y/N's jacket on her lap before placing the keys on the shelf above the bourbon. Y/N groaned as she walked out, leaving Y/N alone and handcuffed to the chair.
"Fuck." Y/N mumbled as she tried to wriggle free, hoping to break the plastic arm rest. Soon giving up and counting the ceiling tiles above. As an uncertain amount of time past, Y/N was left feeling uncomfortable. Soon the phone rang and it was Wanda's voice.
"I'm so sorry Y/N, Billy had a fall and I am currently at the hospital with him." She spoke in a hushed voice. "I know I said I wouldn't be long but we are just waiting for the x-ray results. I'll see you soon." Y/N slammed her head on the desk with a tired groan, closing her eyes for a brief moment, only to look up like a deer in headlights at the sound of keys in the door.
"Oh, I am so happy to see you." Y/N smiled as she saw Nat walk in with some files.
"What are you doing here?" She questioned as she hurriedly closed the door.
"Well, Wanda and I have been having sex, for months." Y/N told her. "And we have obviously had sex earlier and now I am handcuffed to this bloody chair." Y/N gradually raised her voice as she spoke, shaking the chair with her whole body. "But." She took a breath to calm down. "The key is just above the bourbon, so if you would please uncuff me so I can get dressed."
"Y/N." Nat shook her head, an unsure look in her eye. "Wanda will be expecting you as such." She gestured to her posture. "And I can't afford to lose my job because I actually like working here. Without the sex part."
"Come on!" Y/N pleaded as she moved from around the desk, her jacket falling from her lap.
"Oh come on!" Nat covered her eyes as she spotted the arousal stained strap on. "Wheel yourself back."
"Please Nat." Y/N pleaded. "I will buy you anything."
"I need a new Nintendo Switch." She told her. "Yelena borrowed mine and we both know that I will not be getting it back."
"Sold! Now get me free." Y/N told her as Nat moved to get the key.
"So, those nights you had someone in your bedroom, that was Wanda. Our boss?" She questioned as Y/N nodded.
"Yes it was." She answered. "Now please let me out of here!" She begged. "This shirt is unbelievably tight and these cuffs are starting to hurt me."
"You and Wanda do have the same style, which is weird." Nat admitted as she approached her. "But she did look much better in a looser blouse."
"Don't you dare." Y/N snarled. "She is mine." Nat just giggled as she undone one of the cuffs, Y/N massaged their wrist before the door soon opened.
"Nat? What are you?" Wanda rambled as she looked between the two.
"I know about the two of you." Nat told her. "But please don't fire me. I can't live off of Y/N's paycheck."
"Can you sit with Billy, he's just outside at your desk." Wanda asked as Nat nodded, closing the door behind her.
"She took the key." Y/N pointed out, just a moment later, Nat opened the door slightly and handed Wanda the key. "How is Billy?" Y/N asked her as she undone the other.
"He is fine, he has a hairline fracture so nothing too serious." Wanda told her as Y/N bent down to put on her pants, soon hearing the blouse tearing causing Wanda to giggle. "I think we need to wear different blouses."
"You think?" Y/N asked with a raised brow.
"It's not my fault you are buff." Wanda squeezed her biceps as she looked up in Y/N's eyes. "But it is a bonus to have strong arms wrapped around me, making me feel safe."
"I'll always keep you safe." Y/N kissed her softly as she grabbed her jacket. "Luckily I have a spare in my office." Y/N approached the door, hand resting on the handle as Wanda spoke.
"I think I love you." She told her, a smile formed on Y/N's face before she turned around to Wanda, approaching her and kissing her softly before pulling away and looking in her eyes.
"I think I love you too." She smiled before kissing her once more before she left the office. Wanda smiled as her heart swelled at the growing love between the two of them. Love comes to us all at different times of our lives, the journey we take to find the one who makes your heartbeat rapidly and your smile grow impossibly bigger. Wanda has finally found that love in the woman who works alongside her.

No Benefits
Bucky Barnes x Reader, Bucky Barnes x Sharon Carter
Summary: Reader and Bucky are best friends until a drunken hook up. Bucky wants a friends with benefits situation because he doesn't feel ready for a relationship but reader knows that will lead to a broken heart.
Then Sharon Carter comes to work with them.
Notes: Steve and Tony are around but retired, everything else is mostly canon
I try to keep my reader generic but as always she is female and taller than average.
I have to say I've been a bit overwhelmed at the response to this story, I hope I can live up to your expectations.
Chapter 2
Warnings: swearing, angst, a little dirty talk. Bucky's kind of an ass, Sharon is evil.
Cookie just stared at the pictures, heart racing, almost hyperventilating. She shook her head and looked at Nick Fury "This can't be right, can it? Sharon Carter can't be working against us, can she?"
Fury looked at her, concern evident on his face. "I'd like to think it's impossible but look at what happened with Hydra. We knew that Rumlow and the strike team were on our side and it turned out the entire operation had been rotten for decades."
Cookie tried to still her hands "B B But th this, this is different. Sh Sh Sha Sharon C C Carter. SHIELD founder P Peggy Carter's niece can't be the Power Broker." She felt her stomach drop and heart stop when it clicked "Oh god, no she can't but b b but Sam and" whispered "Bucky" the color left her face and she started pacing, bouncing until Nick snapped
"COOKIE!"
Y/N jumped and turned to face her boss "Yessir?"
Nick rubbed her arms "Calm down. You're no good to me like this. Barnes and Wilson are off site with Carter, right? Where are they, exactly?"
Cookie nodded "uh yeah they're um, wait let me see." She pulled her phone out "they should be, Latvia." She exhaled and it felt like she was deflating "Where my informant was killed last night."
Fury nodded "I doubt she wants to kill Wilson or Barnes so we just need to get this info to them. You'll probably have to wait until they come home."
Cookie shook her head "But what if she kidnaps them? What if they don't come back?"
Fury shook his head "We'll cross that bridge if we get to it. I need you to compile everything you have that's even vaguely related to the Power Broker and anything you can find about Carter's movements. Let's see if we can find more links between them." He looked at his watch
"I want you in my office for lunch and we'll go over everything you have." He looked her in the eyes "Alright, Cookie? I know you're concerned about your friends but we need to keep our minds clear and focused on the facts so that we can help keep them safe."
Cookie tried to blink the tears out of her eyes and nodded "Got it, boss." before hurrying to her office by way of the break room because coffee was a dire need at this point.
She made it to her office, closed the door so no one would disturb her, turned on her music and sat down to go through every bit of Intel she had that might offer any clues. There were stacks of correspondence and photos plus some undefined amount of info on a thumb drive that she needed to work through with the only other analysts she absolutely knew she could trust, Dylan and Iris. She had trained with them and came up through Quantico where Nick Fury personally headhunted them.
Cookie didn't want to take a chance by getting too many people involved in this, after the whole SHIELD/HYDRA debacle she kept a couple of people close and everyone else could wait outside her gates until they convinced her they were trustworthy. This was huge and had 2 Avengers directly in Sharon's line of fire so had to be handled carefully.
Cookie also knew that her frayed friendship with Bucky was going to make this even more complicated because Sharon could use that to discredit her so Bucky thinks Cookie is just trying to eliminate a romantic rival.
She shook her head, no time to get distracted by emotions, her friends were in danger and that had to remain her focus. By 1pm, Cookie had synced almost all of Sharon Carter's movements with the power broker. There was no doubt, it was definitely her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the other side of the world, Sam was fed up with his mission partners. Sharon rubbed him the wrong way and Bucky was too wrapped up in her to see anything but sex. Sam had a bad feeling about Sharon, she was constantly wandering off only to be found on her phone and the Power Broker seemed to get away right before they arrived, every single time.
He tried to talk to Bucky but he just laughed it off, explaining how impossible it was for a Carter to be the bad guy. "Sam you're being ridiculous and paranoid even for a spy. Sharon is just as frustrated with our lack of progress as we are. You know sometimes this is just a waiting game." He smirked at his friend "We could find you a nice girl to pass the time with."
Sam shook his head and scoffed "A nice girl? You mean like Cookie for instance, who wouldn't try to distract me with sex like yours is doing to you."
Bucky laughed "You jealous man? I'm just making up for lost time and Cookie didn't want me." His smile dropped as he thought of her.
Sam looked at Bucky with wide eyes "Cookie didn't want you? Now we both know that's not the truth, you just got scared of the idea of a real relationship and dropped her for your living cock sleeve. You're a dumbass, Barnes."
Sam's phone buzzed with a text and he smiled when he saw it was from Cookie. She always checked up to make sure they were eating and sleeping while in the field. He looked at his texts
*<3 BeSafe*CYA*
That caught his attention. CYA= Cover Your Ass. It was their code for trouble close by which meant she found something concerning but the problem was too close to say out loud.
Bucky tried to look over his shoulder "What's that? From Cookie? You fucking her?" His voice dropped and he looked angrily at the ground "I knew she would find someone better."
Sam looked at him with disgust "The fuck is wrong with you? The only reason she might find someone better is cuz you pushed her away when you should have held on tight because you're not gonna find another one like her."
He nodded towards the hall where Sharon had gone "That one is trouble. There's something not right about all this and the way she keeps dragging you off to the bedroom."
Bucky smirked "I can't help that she's insatiable. Don't want to disappoint."
Sharon was in the other room listening to their discussion, smiling at how easily Bucky stood up for her. It was simple enough to get his attention when she came back to work with SWORD and he did all the work pushing Cookie away with his guilt. She was confident that he would take her side if that analyst bitch got too close. Sam could be a problem but nothing she wasn't prepared to handle.
She used a burner phone to send a text to her associate, the Intel analyst in D.C. to let them know she would be returning stateside soon and everything was going according to plan.
In the morning Bucky woke up in bed with Sharon's head on his bare chest and groaned. The position he was in wasn't a concern but he didn't remember going to bed or the usual activities with Sharon that followed. He couldn't remember anything past his talk with Sam, about Cookie. He didn't remember eating but he must have since it had been almost lunch time when he spoke to Sam. If he hadn't eaten he would be famished by now.
He took a deep breath and tried to focus and see if he could find any memories but all he could add was Sharon coming into the room and pulling him into their bedroom.
He looked at his watch and counted hours, he had lost almost 18 hours and couldn't figure out what happened. This wasn't the first time he had lost time on this trip and he didn't like the feeling.
Sam was right, something was off.
Sharon started to stir against him "Hey baby, look who's up before me."
Bucky smiled "Mornin baby, you sleep ok? Did we have some fancy liquor last night? I can't remember a damn thing, not even fucking you for 2 hours and I'm sure I did that."
She whined "I'm that forgettable? I thought I made you feel good." and pouted, rubbing his growing cock to distract him.
He reached between her legs to find her ready "You're always so wet and ready for me sweetheart. Tell me what you need."
Sharon moaned "I need you to fuck me, Barnes. Hard and deep. Right now."
Bucky was only too happy to oblige, the lost time forgotten in their haze of lust.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In her office Cookie and her crew worked well past lunchtime until an intern showed up from Nick's office to remind them of the passage of time.
Cookie put all of the papers and photos into a box since they hadn't had time to digitize it all and write up a comprehensive report. She went over every single detail with Nick and Maria to determine what should go in her report and which points to highlight for field agents.
The rest of the day and into the evening Cookie's team had everything organized and the details and evidence all written up in a 5 page report with back up documentation available in her files. She looked up when her phone buzzed to see it was Sam responding to her earlier text
*👍🐴☔*
She smiled knowing that Sam got it and would watch out for Bucky even if he was a dumbass.
Looking at her watch she saw it was almost midnight and noticed Iris trying to read her text before she quickly put her phone away. Iris and Dylan were her most trusted analysts but even they didn't need to know about her chatting with Sam.
She dismissed them so she could have a bit to herself to reply to Sam and include some details that they didn't have the clearance for.
A few days later when Sam, Bucky and Sharon arrived back home, Cookie was there to meet Sam and barely even acknowledged Bucky or Sharon which made Bucky act out, snapping at Sharon. Sharon was annoyed that he still cared about fucking Cookie, after all the work she had done to get him under control he was still pining for that stupid analyst. She knew something would need to be done about her soon.
Sam and Cookie walked arm in arm to medical to have him checked out, then to the common room when she had left some chili simmering for him plus fresh French bread. They took their lunch and went to his room to eat.
Cookie sat across from Sam while he talked about the mission until the food was gone and he stopped, just staring at her.
Cookie stared back "What?"
He looked at her sideways "First, I love you Cookie but you look like Hell. You're worried about me in the field but you're here looking like you haven't slept or had a decent meal in weeks."
She flinched before whispering "Closer to months."
"No, Cookie. Don't destroy yourself over a man that's too stupid to see what's right in front of him. We need you here. Nick fucking Fury insists you're the best intelligence analyst he's ever met. Ever. From the man who doesn't offer praise lightly.
I need you. I can't trust anyone else to lay all the intel out just so it flows for me. Or make sure I'm taken care of when I come back from a mission?
And his dumb ass might not know it or be willing to admit it but Barnes needs you too. He's in love with you, he just thinks he's being good and noble by pushing you away. And if he doesn't figure it out, there's plenty of other men and women that would jump at the chance to be with you. So take care of yourself."
Sam sighed "Second, I know you didn't send the CYA code for shits and giggles so tell me. What do you know?"
Cookie shifted uncomfortably "I want you to know this has nothing to do with their relationship, I didn't look to discredit her or hurt him but you know I have to follow the evidence where it leads me, without prejudice. You know I-"
Sam stopped her "I know you are impartial and I trust you and your conclusions so just spit it out and we'll go from there. Ok?"
Cookie nodded and took a deep breath before blurting out "Sharoncarteristhepowerbroker" then covering her mouth and looked at Sam with wide eyes.
Sam stopped and stared "Please tell me you didn't just say what I think you said. Tell me that she's-. Fuck." He shook his head "I know you have proof. Cookie, you have to tell Barnes."
She blinked rapidly trying to clear the tears that suddenly welled up in her eyes "Nononono, no I can't tell him. He will think I'm some disgruntled woman trying to hurt my rival. You have to tell him Sam he will never listen to me. Hell he hasn't even spoken to me outside of work ever since...."
Her eyes filled up and she tried to hold the tears back but she had been keeping it all in for so long.
Sam pulled her into his chest and sighed "Alright. Give me what you have, I'll talk to him tomorrow. And what's with all the containers of Cookies?"
Cookie shrugged "I was worried about you. Couldn't sleep. I made some of your favorites, the red velvet. The frosted ones are *special* to help you sleep."
Sam hugged Cookie and kissed her cheek "Alright babygirl, lay it out for me..." They spent the next hour going over everything she had before her eyes started drooping. "Okay Miss Cookie, go get some sleep and I'll see you at the debrief tomorrow."
Cookie gathered her paperwork and left Sam's room only to see Bucky in the kitchen. She didn't want to ignore him so nodded and grunted as she passed without slowing down. Bucky just watched her leave, wondering what she was doing in Sam's room so late.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After their run the next morning Sam and Bucky sat down for coffee. Sharon told Bucky she wanted to sleep in so Sam figured now was the time.
Bucky started in on him before he even spoke "What's up with you and Cookie? You are fucking her aren't you? I saw her leave your room early this morning. Don't fucking lie to me jerk."
Sam brushed him off, "None of your damn business."
He tried to change the subject and explain about Sharon but Bucky didn't respond well
"What the fuck do you mean Sam? Sharon is not the goddamn power broker, that's ridiculous, her aunt was a founder of SHIELD. Where did you get your Intel from?" Sam looked at him pointedly, like there was any other person who Sam trusts completely.
Bucky shook his head angrily and stood up to head to Cookies office. "I can't believe you fell for it Sam. She's just trying to get Sharon back because she is with me. I turned her down for a relationship so she wants to hurt me back. Sharon warned me that she would try to pull something like this."
Sam stood up and grabbed Bucky's arm "Are you kidding me? You think Cookie would put her career and reputation on the line for petty jealousies? That she would ruin Sharon's reputation for revenge, over you? I guess you don't really know her after all." He shook his head "I'm disappointed in you man. I thought better of you. Good luck confronting Cookie, she's not interested in your shit."
Cookie was at her desk making packets with the Intel on the power broker for the top brass when Maria stopped by.
"Hows everything, Cookie? Got that power broker packet for me?"
Cookie nodded "It's right here." and reached out with a folder.
Maria noticed her hands "Cookie? What happened to your nails? When was the last time you had a mani-pedi? Is your girl sick?" She looked over Cookies hands in concern, she never missed her nail appointment.
Cookie shrugged "I don't know, I forgot. It's no big deal."
Maria looked closer "You look like Hell. Finish the packets up and take the afternoon off, you need-"
"Cookie!" Bucky roared as he came striding up to her office "What the Hell is this bullshit?"
Roll Call l J. B. Barnes
ONE. Under the Diner Lights
summary : The biting winters of 1943 paled in comparison to the frozen hearts of soldiers, weary and broken by the unrelenting call of war. For men burdened by despair, the burn of alcohol was the only warmth they knew. Sergeant Barnes lived for one purpose: to stand by his best friend’s side, no matter where the battlefield led them. But a chance encounter at a dimly lit bar near the military camp changes everything. A young woman, bold yet gentle, awakens something in him—a spark long buried beneath years of frost and pain. Inspired by Roll Call by The Neighborhood.
pairing : James ''Bucky'' Barnes x f!reader
warnings : Mature themes (13+), flirtation and teasing, fluff.
word count : 4.6k
author's notes : I first wrote this in 2018 for an old friend's birthday, and it was the first one-shot I had ever written as well as my first MCU-related work. It was honestly very poor writing—I wrote in both first-person AND third-person POV and I even had an OC put in it that I had barely put any thought into, it was awful—but given I was thirteen at the time, it isn't that shocking.
Nonetheless, the scenario still appeals to me, and The Neighborhood (which was at the time consuming 99% of my music chart) is still one of my favorite bands; I wanted to pay an homage to my roots by making a remastered version.
It turns out that I can indeed go overboard and transform what had once been a poorly written 5k words scenario into a whopping 22k-word story in the span of a single night. When a girl wants, she gets. Obviously, I have divided it; it's going to take me great restraint not to post everything at once.
Here's the first part of the story. I hope you'll enjoy the ride, this came at the cost of my sanity and the several precious hours of lost sleep.
(ao3 version)
The chatter of soldiers filled the room, their voices loud and full of the kind of bravado that only came with knowing they might not make it home. It was a familiar scene in the small diner that had become a favorite spot for the local military. After all, the diner was a familiar refuge for soldiers on leave. With the war raging overseas, it had become a haven for those looking for a brief respite from the horrors of the battlefield. The men, heavy with the weight of their duties, sought comfort in the warm glow of the lights and the warmth of alcohol, determined to enjoy the brief respite before returning to the frontlines.
You had seen it all before. You’d been working here for as long as you could remember—long enough to know the rhythms of the place and the faces of the soldiers who passed through its doors. It was 1943, and though the world was at war, this small diner was a constant, offering warmth and familiarity to the men who needed it most.
As a waitress at the diner, you were used to the noise, the rowdy soldiers, the long hours, the repetitive tasks grounding you in a world that felt strangely disconnected from the chaos outside. You moved through the crowd with ease, filling orders and wiping down counters, delivering drinks and meals to the men who sought comfort in the fleeting moments of normalcy. The war weighed heavy on everyone’s shoulders, but here, in the dim light of the diner, it was easy to pretend for just a little while that the world wasn’t torn apart.
It was another ordinary evening when Margareth Elizabeth “Peggy” Carter walked in. You had grown used to her visits; Peggy had a way of moving through the world that was commanding and purposeful. She wasn’t just another customer. She was someone who carried the weight of the world on her shoulders but somehow made it look effortless. And though you didn’t know the full extent of Peggy’s work with the Strategic Scientific Reserve, you knew it was important—far too important to be talked about in public.
“You’re looking a little worn out, Peg’” you remarked, pausing for a moment as you wiped the counter.
Peggy gave you a small smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “It’s been a long day,” she said, her tone brisk. “I could use a break.”
Peggy’s visits were usually short, but tonight, she was clearly staying longer. You couldn’t help but notice the way Peggy kept glancing at the door, as though she was waiting for someone.
Before you could ask if anything was wrong, the door opened, and in walked two soldiers. One was tall and broad-shouldered with a boyish charm that seemed to soften his otherwise serious demeanor. The other, slightly shorter but just as imposing, had a more rugged look, his jaw set in a way that spoke of someone who had seen more than he should have. You noticed that both of them seemed to be trying hard not to draw attention to themselves, but it wasn’t working. The air in the diner shifted when they walked in.
Peggy, bless her heart, had eyes as sharp as her mind and quickly caught on to what could have been stringing her dear friend’s attention for the past five minutes by looking in the direction of her gaze. She studied you carefully for a moment before speaking again, her voice softer this time. “You’ve been working hard. If you need a break, let me know.”
You gave a small smile and nodded. “I’ll be alright.”
“Do you know who that is?” Peggy asked, glancing toward the counter where the dark-eyed soldier was sitting.
You froze, lifting your head towards your confidante. “No idea who you’re talking about.”
Peggy’s gaze flickered to the man at the counter. “That soldier there,” she said quietly. “His name’s James Barnes. He’s with Steve Rogers. I’ve heard a lot about him. Good soldier, but… he’s seen a lot. Be cautious, [Y/N].”
You smiled, grateful for your friend’s kindness and protectiveness. “Don’t worry about me, Peg’. I think I’ve seen enough of the clientele to know what I’m dealing with.”
Their conversation got interrupted by one soldier calling you to serve them, and you excused yourself to go and attend to the client with a promise to come back to her.
You saw Peggy standing up from her seat, her posture shifting from casual to professional. She caught your eye and gave a small nod, signaling to you that she was counting on staying with these two soldiers for the remainder of her stay at the diner. You weren’t sure what to make of the interaction, but something told you that these men were more than just soldiers—they were part of something bigger.
Peggy greeted them both with a curt nod, but there was something familiar in her businesslike voice, a bond that was clear to anyone paying attention. “Gentlemen.”
The two men gave a slight nod in return. Steve’s smile was warm but tired, while James’ expression was more guarded, scanning the room with a quiet intensity.
“We were hoping for a quick drink before we head back,” Steve said, his voice carrying a hint of exhaustion. “Just a moment of peace.”
Peggy didn’t hesitate. “Of course,” she said, her voice steady. “Take a seat at the counter. I’ll be right with you.”
You watched as the two men took their seats, their casual demeanor belying the weight they carried. You didn’t recognize them, but there was something about their presence that made you pause. They didn’t look like the average soldiers you’d seen pass through here. There was a certain tension in their posture, a wariness that made them seem different. But there was no time to dwell on it—you had orders to fill.
As you went to refill the soldier’s drink, you watched as the two men took their seats, their casual demeanor belying the weight they carried. You didn’t recognize them, but there was something about their presence that made you pause. They didn’t look like the average soldiers you’d seen pass through here. You quickly turned away, trying to focus on the job, but you couldn’t shake the strange feeling that something had just changed.
You emerged from the kitchen room after submitting the latest orders when Peggy called over to you, her tone casual but firm. “Hey, [Y/N], could you take their orders? I’m a bit caught up with something else.”
A small flutter of nerves ran through you. You hadn’t met these two men before, but there was something about them that was different. They didn’t carry themselves like the usual soldiers you served. Maybe it was just the nature of being soldiers during a war, or maybe it was something else. Either way, it made you feel oddly vulnerable, as if these men were capable of seeing more than you were letting on.
“Sure thing,” you replied, walking over to the table with a practiced smile. As you approached, you noticed the way both men subtly straightened their postures, as if instinctively aware of their surroundings, but trying to remain low-key.
“Good evening, gentlemen,” you politely said, pulling out her notepad. “What can I get you tonight?”
Steve flashed you a smile, and though his eyes were tired, there was a warmth in them that made you feel at ease. "A couple of beers would be great," he said, glancing at Bucky for confirmation.
Bucky didn’t respond immediately. He was watching you intently, his dark eyes steady as he took in your features. There was a flicker of something in his expression—something unreadable—but he nodded in agreement with Steve’s order. "Make that two," Bucky added in his low, gravelly voice, though he didn’t take his eyes off you.
There was a strange, subtle tension in the air, and you couldn’t place it. It wasn’t hostile, but there was something… guarded about him. He was different from the others. There was something about the way he carried himself—quiet, intense, yet effortlessly calm.
"Coming right up." You said quickly, trying to shake off the feeling as you moved toward the bar.
You moved behind the counter to prepare their drinks, your eyes briefly flicking to the pair as you worked. You caught James’ gaze for another moment, his dark eyes locking onto yours. It was only for a split second, but it was enough to make your heart skip a beat.
You had seen him before—always with the others, always just another face in the crowd. But tonight, there was something different. His quiet demeanor contrasted with the rowdy energy of the other soldiers, and it made you feel like you were stepping into something deeper than just a simple interaction. The connection felt strange, almost as though there was something more to it. You quickly looked away, trying to shake off the feeling.
You returned to the counter, placing the two beers down in front of the soldiers. You tried to push the lingering feeling aside, but there was something about the taller one—James Barnes—that kept drawing your attention. He had an intensity to him, something that made you nervous in a way you couldn’t quite explain. His quiet demeanor contrasted with the rowdy energy of the other soldiers, and it made you feel like you were stepping into something deeper than just a simple interaction.
You placed the drinks in front of them, offering a smile that you hoped didn’t come off too forced. "There you go, gentlemen. Anything else?"
Steve gave you a warm, tired smile, and Bucky, though still quiet, gave you a small nod. "Thanks," Steve said. "That’s all for now."
You hesitated for a moment, wanting to ask something—something about them, about why they felt so different from the usual crowd—but you couldn’t quite find the words. Instead, you let the silence stretch, your eyes flicking between the two men as they settled into their drinks.
As you stood there, wondering how to break the ice, you heard Peggy’s voice from the other end of the counter. "You two behaving?" she called out lightly, making her way over with her confident, purposeful stride.
Steve smiled at Peggy, but there was a bit of relief in his expression at the sight of her. "Trying to," he said, giving James a teasing look.
The latter, as usual, said nothing but let his lips curl into a small, almost imperceptible smile. It was a rare moment of warmth from the usually stoic man.
Peggy paused in front of you for a moment, studying you carefully before turning to the two soldiers. "Well, if you’re behaving, then maybe I can introduce you to [Y/N], here," she said with a soft smile.
You blinked, looking at Peggy in surprise. "You mean, you’ve never introduced us?" you said, raising an eyebrow as you gave a teasing smile of your own.
Peggy’s eyes twinkled with mischief. "I wasn’t sure if you three would hit it off," she said, giving a pointed look at Bucky.
Bucky raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment, turning his attention back to his drink.
"[Y/N], this is Steve Rogers and James Barnes," Peggy said, gesturing to the two soldiers. "Steve’s a bit of a show-off, but he’s alright. Bucky here—well, let’s just say he’s got a history of getting into trouble."
Steve chuckled at that. "I prefer to think of it as ‘saving the world,’ Peg," he replied, flashing a charming grin at you.
You couldn’t help but smile back at Steve’s warmth. "Well, I’m sure we all have our own ways of saving the world."
"And I’ve got mine," Bucky said softly, his dark eyes flicking over to you. There was something unreadable in his gaze, but there was a hint of humor there as well.
You gave him a smile of your own. "Nice to meet you both."
Peggy, noticing the brief exchange between Bucky and you, gave a small nod of approval before continuing. "Bucky’s a good soldier, but you’ll find he doesn’t talk much," she added with a teasing lilt in her voice. "He’s a man of few words, but when he speaks, it’s usually something important."
Bucky’s lips twitched in amusement at Peggy’s comment, but he didn’t respond. Instead, he looked at you with an insistence that made your heart thrum a tad faster. There was something about him that made you feel like you were being studied, but not in an uncomfortable way. More like he was taking in the details—quietly observing, as if waiting for something.
"What about you, [Y/N]?" Steve asked while slightly leaning forward. "I can tell that you’re pretty good at keeping things running around here. I’m guessing you’ve seen more than your fair share of soldiers come through."
You smiled at the compliment. "You could say that. I’ve been here long enough to know the regulars. And some of them—well, they’ve got stories that would make your hair stand on end."
"That sounds like something I’d like to hear," Steve said, his voice easygoing but with a hint of sincerity.
Before you could respond, Peggy’s light voice interrupted. "Don’t get her started on the stories. You’ll never hear the end of them."
You laughed lightly, shaking your head. "I’ll have you know, I’ve got the best stories in the diner. You just need to ask the right questions."
"Alright, I’ll take your word for it," Steve replied, his smile warm. "But for now, I think I’ll stick to the beer."
As you turned to head back to the bar to fill another order, you found your mind often leading you to your new acquaintances. There was something magnetic about these two men—Bucky’s quiet demeanor and Steve’s easy warmth. And though you didn’t know it yet, something told you this was just the beginning of a connection that would unfold in unexpected ways.
After serving the two soldiers and exchanging pleasantries with Peggy, you couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched, especially by James. His quiet intensity lingered in your thoughts, even as you moved around the diner, taking orders and serving meals. There was a strange pull in the air every time you glanced in his direction—something about the way he observed you, as though he were piecing together a puzzle. Despite the din of chatter and clinking dishes, your mind kept returning to that brief moment of eye contact with him. His gaze had been steady, almost penetrating, and there was an inexplicable tension in the air that made your stomach flip.
The evening wore on and you found yourself stealing glances at the two soldiers, but every time he caught your gaze, he offered nothing more than a small, unreadable smile before turning his attention back to his drink. Steve, on the other hand, was much easier to talk to—his smile was warm, and he didn’t seem to mind the casual conversations that passed between them. But James… James was something else entirely.
Finally, as your shift came to a close, you finished your last table and wiped down the counter one final time. The steady hum of the diner slowly began to quiet as the soldiers started to trickle out, leaving you with only the soft chatter of the kitchen staff and the occasional clink of cutlery. You were ready to head home, though you couldn’t deny a small part of you was still wishfully thinking that the night would have grown longer so you could go chatter with the two soldiers.
You grabbed your coat and made your way to the back door of the diner. The night air was chilly, but it was a welcome change from the warmth of the cramped kitchen. As you stepped outside into the alleyway behind the diner, you felt the cool breeze against your skin, pulling you out of your thoughts.
Just as you started walking toward your apartment, a familiar rumble of an engine broke through the quiet night. You turned your head, and there, parked in the shadows, was a motorcycle—dark, sleek, and unmistakable Harley Davidson WLA. James stood next to it, his leather jacket gleaming under the dim streetlights.
“Hey,” he said casually, leaning against the bike, one hand resting on the handlebar. There was a smirk on his lips, but his dark eyes still carried that unreadable intensity.
You blinked, surprised to see him. “I didn’t expect to see you out here.”
James raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening slightly. “Thought I’d catch you before you disappeared into the night. I was a bit doubtful to succeed though with the way you carry yourself in a crowd, I figured you’d be out of here before anyone noticed.” He said, a teasing grin tugging at his lips as he leaned against his motorcycle, playfully acknowledging how good you are at your job, but also teasing you about being busy.
You couldn’t help but chuckle, your nerves suddenly flaring as the distance between you closed. “You really do have a way of showing up, don’t you?”
He gave a casual shrug. “Guess I’m just good at finding people.” James’ tone was playful, but there was an underlying warmth there, as though he were genuinely interested. “So, what are you doing after this? Walking home alone in the dark?” He tilted his head, looking at you with a hint of concern mixed with amusement.
You hesitated, glancing down the quiet street. “I live a couple of blocks away. It’s not too bad.” “I can give you a ride,” he offered, his voice low, yet confident. He gestured to the motorcycle. “It’s faster than walking, and less dangerous than wandering around by yourself.”
There was a brief pause as you considered it. James wasn’t the kind of guy you normally struck up a conversation with, but something about the way he was looking at you made you hesitate for a moment longer. You met his eyes, a little bit of a challenge in your gaze. “You think you’re the only one with wheels, Sergeant Barnes?”
His smirk deepened, the playful tone in his voice turning a little more serious. “I’m sure you can find your way home just fine,” he said, stepping closer, his presence commanding, “but I wouldn’t mind keeping you company for the ride.”
You raised an eyebrow, deciding to have a little fun with it. “And what makes you think I’d accept a ride from you? We’ve barely even met tonight, James. For all I know, you could be a dangerous psychopath. You know, stranger danger.”
He chuckled softly, a sound that was more genuine than she expected. “That’s true,” he agreed, the smile on his lips turning more teasing. “James Barnes, at your service. But you can just call me Bucky.”
“Well, Bucky,” you said, testing his nickname out for the first time, your voice lighter than before, “I guess I could use the company. It’s not every day someone offers me a ride home.” Bucky uncrossed his arms and pushed off the bike, taking a few steps closer, and the way his eyes met hers made your pulse quicken. “So, is that a yes, then?” Your lips quirked in a small smile, your curiosity now piqued. “I’m saying I’ve got nothing better to do and that I’m careless enough to indulge in a bit of adventure.” You took a step toward him. “Lead the way.”
“Glad to hear it,” Bucky replied, his smile widening as he moved to the bike and gestured for you to climb on behind him. As you straddled the motorcycle, he turned to you and lent her the only helmet that he had. It had to be his as it was a bit too big for you. He helped you secure it tightly on your head, taking his time to gently brush away your hair and buckling the safety gear.
The soldier started the engine after placing himself in front of you, a low rumble vibrating through the handlebars. “Hold on tight,” he said with a soft voice, a hint of something deeper in his tone. He felt a slight shiver run down his spine—not from the cold, but from the sudden warmth that pressed against his back.
Your arms slid around his waist, tentative at first, but then firming up as you settled in behind him. It was a simple, intimate gesture, one that caught him off guard, and yet it felt right. The weight of your arms against him was a comforting contrast to the harshness of the world outside, and for a brief moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the sensation that made the noise of the engine fade into the background.
You rode through the streets with the wind whipping around you, Bucky smoothly guiding his motorcycle while making small talk as you passed by the dimly lit streets of the city. He was casual, but every now and then, he’d throw in a question that felt more personal than a regular chat.
“So, where am I taking you?” Bucky asked, his voice cutting through the sound of the engine. His tone was light, but there was an underlying curiosity in it, like he was genuinely interested in getting to know you.
You hesitated for a moment, the rush of the ride making you feel both exhilarated and exposed. But you didn’t mind. There was something about Bucky’s presence that made you feel safe, even with the uncertainty of the night. You leaned in a little closer, your voice rising just enough to be heard over the wind.
“My place’s a few blocks down,” you said, giving him the address, your breath steady despite the pounding of your heart. You hoped to any listening deity out there that he couldn’t feel it through the leather of his jacket. “Right past the old bookstore on the corner. Just follow this road and take a left at the next light.”
Bucky nodded, committing the directions to memory as he maneuvered the bike effortlessly through the streets. As you neared the turn, you pointed it out for him, guiding him as he followed the path you set. You couldn’t help but smile a little to yourself. It felt strangely natural, this back-and-forth of directions, the way you were working together to reach your destination.
“Indulge me a bit,” he started, his voice almost drowned by the hum of the engine but still reaching your ears clearly, “what’s someone like you doing in a place like back there?”
You laughed lightly, the wind pulling your hair as you leaned closer to his back to stay steady. “You mean, why am I working in a diner in the middle of a warzone?”
“Pretty much.” Bucky’s voice was soft, but there was something about the way he asked that felt like he wanted more than just a simple answer.
You shrugged playfully. “I like it. Keeps me busy and the stories interesting. It’s my little escape from everything. Not to mention it obviously helps me pay the rent, electricity, and everything.”
Bucky nodded, his eyes glinting with interest. “I get that.” Then he paused, as though considering something. “I might be a bit upfront, but I think you’ve got more to you than just working in a diner, though.”
You couldn’t help but smile at the compliment. “You really know how to flatter a girl, don’t you?”
“Not really,” Bucky replied, a little more serious now. “I just call it how I see it.”
There was a moment of silence, just the sound of the engine filling the air. Then, out of nowhere, Bucky added, his tone soft but direct, “If you ever need someone to keep you company again, just give me your coordinates.”
You raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at your lips. “Coordinates? What are you, a spy?”
Bucky chuckled. “Let’s just say I know how to find the people I want to.”
His words hung in the air as you considered them. He was being bold, but there was a raw sincerity in his voice that made you smile despite yourself.
“I’ll think about it,” you teased, your hand resting lightly on his waist as you cruised through the streets, the night feeling just a little bit warmer than before.
“Almost there,” you called out, your arms tightening around his waist just slightly as you leaned forward, your breath mixing with the cool night air.
As you reached the final block, Bucky slowed the bike, taking the turn with a smooth motion that made you feel almost weightless. The streets were quieter here, a little less lit, but you knew you were close.
He didn’t immediately pull up to the curb. Instead, he stopped just a little further down the road, near the corner. For a moment, the hum of the engine was the only sound that filled the air, and Bucky took a beat, glancing over his shoulder at you, his expression unreadable but curious.
“You live alone?” he asked casually, though there was a glint of something behind his question, something that made you wonder if it was more than just small talk.
You blinked, a little taken aback. It wasn’t an unusual question, but the way he phrased it made you pause. You shifted slightly, tightening your grip on his waist as you tried to mask the flicker of surprise in your tone. “Why do you wanna know?” you teased lightly, not wanting to reveal too much just yet.
Bucky let out a small laugh, his gaze shifting forward as he fiddled with the bike’s throttle, stalling just a little longer. “I’d like to know if I’m gonna have to share you with anyone else,” he said with a playful edge, though there was a subtle sincerity to his words.
You couldn’t help but laugh, a small sound that felt comfortable in the quiet between you. “Not unless you’re looking to make a new friend. It’s just me,” you said, trying to sound casual, biting your lip as you felt a little flutter in your chest at the idea of him wanting to be that “someone.”
“Good to know,” he murmured, the words almost lost under the hum of the engine, but you could hear the smile in his voice.
You shifted again, about to hop off the bike, but Bucky’s hand reached down, briefly brushing yours. “Hey,” he said, turning just enough to meet your eyes, “If you’re serious about thinking it over, you can find me anytime. I don’t have a phone, but if you need me, just leave a note at the post office near the old church on Third. Ask for me, they’ll know who you mean.”
You raised an eyebrow, curious. “A note at the post office?”
He nodded, his smile widening slightly. “Yeah. I’ll get it. That way you can reach me anytime. I’ll be waiting.”
You chuckled softly, clearly entertained by his resourcefulness. “I’ll stop by if I’m looking for company,” you teased, feeling the growing anticipation of what might come next.
Bucky raised an eyebrow, the playful glint in his eyes returning. “I’ll be there. Just leave a note and I’ll show up.”
With a final glance at him, you dismounted, your feet touching the cool concrete of the sidewalk. You adjusted your coat and gave him one last look. “Thanks for the ride, Bucky. See you around.”
He nodded, his gaze lingering a little longer than usual. “You sure will.”
You turned to head toward your building, but before you got too far, you heard him call out, his voice warm. “Don’t forget about the post office!”
With a small giggle and a final wave, you disappeared around the corner, a little giddy and knowing you’d be back to see him again.
Question...? Act IV - “Did you leave her house in the middle of the night?"
Pairing - Steve Rogers x Reader Summary - After years of back and forth, years of unknowns, a lifetime of questions, it's time for answers.
Question...? Mini Series List | Steve Rogers Masterlist
3 Years Earlier...
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Hmm…” Steve hums against your lips.
“Why the hell haven’t we done this before?” The words leave your lips in a breathy pant as Steve nips at your jaw. There was something so exhilarating about it all. There was nothing quite like having your childhood best friend, your childhood crush, your best friend, have his hands tangled in your hair.
Adrenaline thrums in your veins. You're not sure if it's from celebrating your college graduation or from this fever dream turn of events. You weren't sure how this happened, what brought you to this moment, but here he is. Steve Rogers is in your bed with his shirt off. Your shirt off. A fever dream indeed.
Steve chuckles against your skin, recalling that kiss from junior high. That sweet, slightly awkward kiss. His very first kiss. The kiss that would always belong to you.
“We have, remember?”
“Not like this.”
He looks down at you, a tender, playful smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “No, it wasn’t quite like this.”
“Steve, I -” Your words are cut off by the shrill ring of Steve’s phone.
“Just ignore it,” he mutters against your skin. It rings again. And again. And again. He groans in frustration, hanging his head against your shoulder, “Seriously? Who the fuck-”
“Language!” you playfully scold.
“Very funny.”
"Just answer it, then they'll leave you alone."
"Fine," he groans, picking up his phone from your nightstand. And the moment he does, his face sinks.
“Steve…” The warmth building in your skin turns to ice in a flash. You sit up in your bed as his face drops with guilt. “Steve?”
His gaze snaps over to you, “Huh?”
Your eyebrows pull together. You already know who it is. And still, you ask, “Who is it?”
His Adam's apple bobs as he swallow the knot in his throat, “It’s - it’s Peggy.”
The sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach only intensifies. In your half dressed state, you suddenly feel so vulnerable, so exposed under Steve's pitiful look. “Peggy? Your ex-girlfriend, Peggy?”
You'd watched him date her on and off for almost two years. They'd called it off two months ago. You had no idea they were even still speaking.
He was your best friend. He told you everything. Everything except that.
“Sorry. Sorry. I should -” He grabs his shirt from your bed, “I should go.”
You softly exhale, “Go?”
“Peggy… she already thinks - she’ll be upset if she finds out I was here alone with you. Even more if I spent the night.”
Your heart sinks the moment her name leaves his lips. You never wanted to be that girl. The girl that made someone feel insecure in their relationship.
You never wanted to be the questionable best friend.
"Why would she be upset?" The words are bitter in your mouth as you feel bile creep up your esophagus. Because in spite of his many assurances, Steve doesn’t sound as done with Peggy Carter as you thought he was. “What does she have to do with us, Steve?”
He winces, “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Your arms cross over your chest, shielding yourself from both him and any further heartbreak. “Then how did you mean it?”
“We aren’t together, if that's what you’re thinking. It’s just the timing of it all. We just broke up a few months ago. And she - she thinks that you…”
You've never heard words sound quite that cold before as you spit, “That I what?”
Steve’s mouth twists. “That you had feelings for me. That’s why you backed off when me and Peggy started dating.”
It was true. In their tumultuous relationship, you'd lost your best friend time and time again. You backed off every time he went back to her. You refused to be a source of insecurity, a point of contention. You were respectful, kind, friendly. You were everything a good best friend should be. And still, it wasn't enough.
You’ve never felt quite such a sharp pain emanating from your rib cage as you do the moment Steve says those words.
You’re not sure if it’s just the intimate moment you were having that makes you feel like an exposed nerve right now. You can’t help but feel vulnerable, betrayed, like the person you trusted most just used you. You stand up, tossing on your discarded shirt, “You’re right, Steve. You should go.”
“Doll…”
You whip open the door to your bedroom, storming out, “Is that what this was? You came here because you thought I had feelings for you, so I’d make a perfect rebound? An easy lay for you?”
He follows behind you, his gaze and words imploring you to hear him out, “That’s not fair. You know that’s not true.”
You knew it wasn’t true. You knew Steve. You knew he could never dream up something that cruel. You also knew you were laying it on thick. In this moment, you can’t bring yourself to care. Not as you fight so hopelessly to keep the tears from welling in your eyes.
“Do I?" you scoff, unlocking your front door so he can leave your house in the middle of the night. "Because this whole thing seems pretty fucked to me.”
Steve barely has the sense to tug his shirt back on as the front door opens.
There's a chilling sense that creeps down his spine. This isn't just a fight. This isn't just you kicking him out for the night. This is you kicking him out for good. This is him about to lose his best friend. His worse fears are about to be realized, he's ruined everything.
He turns to you, his eyes pleading, “You know I would never do that to you. You know me better than anyone.”
“I thought I did too.” You hold the door open for him, stepping to the side to forcefully usher him out. “Good night, Steve.”
As the door snapped shut behind him, he only wished he would've tried a little bit more, tried to explain, tried to apologize, anything to keep you from shutting him out.
He only wished he put up more of a fight...
Masterlist | Series Masterlist
It’s been a sad few days for Steve, he’s been crying a lot after the news that Peggy died.
You and Sam offered to go with him to the funeral so now you’re both sitting in the first row as Steve and five other guys carry the coffin.
“And now, I would like to invite Sharon Carter to come up and say a few words.” the priest says and Steve’s old neighbor Agent 13, steps up to the podium.
Your eyes widen a little in shock and elbow Sam while looking at her, then Sam nudges Steve and nods to her.
“Margaret Carter was known to most as a founder of SHIELD… but I just knew her as Aunt Peggy.” Sharon starts the eulogy and you look at Steve who's just as surprised to see her. “She had a photograph in her office. Aunt Peggy standing next to JFK. As a kid, that was pretty cool. But it was a lot to live up to. Which is why I never told anyone we were related.”
She looks directly at Steve before continuing. “I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. And she said, compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move… it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye and say ‘No. You move.’.”
Her words hit you deep, and you’re sure they hit Steve deep, too.
Peggy was clearly a very smart woman, and the fact that she helped found SHIELD and was such a badass made her your inspiration when you were a trainee and ever since you became an agent. Sharon’s words just made you more and more sure that not signing the Accords is the right thing to do.
-
After the funeral Steve asks you and Sam for a moment alone, so you hug him before letting him have some peace, making your way to the hotel you’re all staying at with Sam.
You’re in the hotel bar when the news comes on with the bombing in Vienna. You and Sam exchange a worried glance and set out to find Steve right away.
You find him near the elevators with Sharon just as the elevator arrives.
“Thanks for walking me back.” Sharon says and as Steve answers “Sure” you get close to them.
“Steve.” you grab his attention.
“There’s something you gotta see.” Sam finishes.
We all go up to Sharon’s hotel room to turn on the news that’s all about the UN bombing in Vienna and how the culprit is believed to be James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier HYDRA asset and formerly known as Sergeant Barnes, Steve’s best friend.
They talk about the death of King T’Chaka and you look at Steve who seems as concerned as you are as you quietly say. “That’s not good.” And he agrees with a nod.
“I have to go to work.” Sharon says and you all know what has to be done.
-
Sam, Steve and you flew to Vienna with Sharon and now you and Sam are in a coffee shop waiting for Steve while he talks to Natasha.
“How can you eat at a time like this?!” you whisper shout to Sam, annoyed.
“What am I supposed to do, starve?” He answers and you roll your eyes but before you can say anything back, Steve steps next to him.
“She tell you to stay out of it?” you ask him, knowing Natasha pretty well.
“Might have a point.” Sam comments casually.
“He'd do it for me.” Steve says back.
“1945, maybe.” Sam says and you roll your eyes and try to be a little more sensitive than Sam.
“I just want to make sure we consider all our options.” you gently say, but Sam cuts in.
“Yeah, the people that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at us.” He says and can’t really fight him on that, he’s not wrong.
Sharon appears next to Steve and starts talking quietly without looking at any of us.
“Tips have been pouring in since that footage went public. Everybody thinks the Winter soldier goes to their gym. Most of it is noise. Except for this.” She slides Steve a file. “My boss expects a briefing, pretty much now, so that's all the head start you're gonna get.”
“Thank you.” Steve says as he takes the file.
“And you're gonna have to hurry. We have orders to shoot on sight.” she says and leaves as the three of you exchange a worried glance. Without wasting any time, you make your way out of the coffee shop and to the airport, destination: Bucharest.
-
You get to the right address and go separate ways. Sam gets to the roof of the building that Steve enters to look for Barnes and you go to the roof of the other building, where you have an eye on both Sam and, thanks to the scope on your rifle, you can see Steve even through the covered windows.
You see Steve enter the small apartment and look around, then he goes to the kitchen and picks up what looks like a notebook and opens it. Then you hear Sam’s voice through the comms.
“Heads up, Cap. German Special Forces approaching from the south.” You notice movement behind Steve as Sam talks.
“Understood.” Steve says as you see Barnes has entered the apartment.
“Steve, turn around.” You tell him through the comms and he slowly does.
“Do you know me?” You can hear Steve ask, but can’t hear Bucky’s response because he's talking too quietly.
“They've set the perimeter.” Sam says, but you’re still focused on Bucky inside the building.
“I know you're nervous. And you have plenty of reason to be.” You hear Steve say, “But you're lying.” You can see Bucky’s lips moving, but at this angle you can’t really read his lips.
“They're entering the building.” Sam says and you finally take your attention away from the apartment and look around the building as you hear Steve talk.
“Well, the people who think you did are coming here now. And they're not planning on taking you alive.”
“Sam, they’re on the roof.” You say through the comms.
“She’s right, I'm compromised.” He says.
“This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck.” Steve says.
“5 seconds.” Sam says in your ear.
“You pulled me from the river. Why?” Steve keeps trying to get through to Bucky.
“3 seconds!” You say as you see them about to breach the apartment.
“Yes, you do!” Steve almost yells before you hear Sam yelling in your ear.
“Breach! Breach! Breach!” you see a grenade crash through the window. Bucky kicks it to Steve, and he smothers it with his shield.
You see Bucky shielding himself with the mattress against an attack from the window, then he blocks the door with a table as cops swing in on cables. Steve pulls the rug from under a policeman, sending him flying. Bucky slams another policeman into the wall.
“Buck, stop! You're gonna kill someone.” you hear Steve say before Bucky slams him down and punches a hole in the floor right next to his face.
You faintly hear him say, “I'm not gonna kill anyone.” Before he pulls something out the floor, throws it out the building and it lands near you.
You’re about to go see what’s in it but are distracted by Bucky and Steve hiding behind the shield together before Bucky shoves Steve into a cop and you have to stop yourself from laughing.
Bucky holds up his metal hand and repels bullets, then slams a cop into some shelves. He picks up a large cement brick and slams it into a cop and you can see Steve fighting another cop on the balcony.
You see Bucky punch through the wall beside the door. He steps into the hallway and you lose sight of him, a second later Steve steps into the hallway and you lose him too.
“You have a visual, Sam?” You ask through the comms and he answers with a simple ‘No’.
You hear Steve say “Come on, man.” and hear his grunting as he fights.
After a minute you hear Steve say “Y/N, he’s coming your way.” and you frown.
“What do you mean he’s-” Before you can answer you can see Bucky jumping out a balcony and you let out a quiet “Holy shit.” that makes Steve groan and Sam snicker.
Bucky lands not too far away from you and, before he can get to his backpack, you put yourself in front of him so he can’t get to it.
“Hello, soldier.” you say in a teasing and vaguely flirting tone, but he simply looks at you for half a second before throwing a punch that you avoid and quickly say “Not a talker. Got it.” Before throwing a punch of your own that he easily stops, holding your arm as he sweeps your legs and in a second you’re on the ground.
Bucky picks up his backpack and runs, but a big man all dressed in black, a full face mask with pointed ears, slams into him and knocks him down. He extends his fingers and sharp claws pop out and he attacks Bucky with sweeping kicks and slashes.
Bucky fights back but is kicked into a wall, the figure swipes his claws and spins gracefully. Bucky narrowly avoids being slashed, holding up a metal bar to protect himself.
You get up and get closer to them to try and help Bucky. You kick the man off of him and protect Bucky by standing in front of him in a fighting stance.
“Bad kitty.” you tell him and can hear Steve and Sam simultaneously say “Seriously, Y/N?”
“Sam, southwest rooftop.” you hear Steve say as the cat man lunges at you.
“Who the hell's the other guy?” Sam asks.
“About to find out.” Steve answers while you try your best to not get killed by the overgrown cat you’re fighting at the moment. The man manages to slam you into a wall and lunges at Bucky with his claws, but Bucky grabs his wrists.
You’re about to help but a soldier fires a machine gun from a chopper, the ammo bounces off the man’s armored suit who’s now on top of Bucky, but you’re forced to hide to avoid the bullets.
You hear Steve call for Sam’s help and Sam answers with a “Got him.” before he flies down and shoves the chopper off course, then swoops towards street level.
Bucky breaks free from his attacker, slings his bag on his back, runs and jumps down a level, and the other man slides down the wall using his claws for traction. Bucky lands at street level and the chase continues. Steve follows and lands rolling along the ground.
You watch them from the edge of the roof and sigh. “Okay, I can’t do that.” You look up in search of Sam. “Sam, I need a ride.”
“I got you.” He says as he swoops down and picks you up, taking flight again to follow the others while you hang on to him for dear life.
Gunfire from the chopper tears up the sidewalk, Bucky jumps down through an opening, lands in an underpass and he runs through the traffic. Cat Suit and Steve drop down and chase after Bucky as a Special Forces Vehicle pursues all of them.
You see Steve leap onto the vehicle and splinter the windshield and, when the driver stops, Steve yanks him from the vehicle and kicks the windshield out, then drives off.
Bucky runs over the top of a speeding car, outpacing it and Cat Suit is a few cars behind, keeping pace with him. Then he leaps on the back of the 4x4 that Steve's driving and Steve swerves from side to side, trying to throw him off.
“Sam, I can't shake this guy.” He says into the comms.
“We’re right behind you.” Sam says as you fly behind him.
Several police cars join the chase and you see Steve side-swipe another car and drive on.
Bucky leaps over a barrier and Steve drives through it, then you can see Bucky grab the handlebar of an incoming motorcycle and spin the bike around in mid air, throwing the rider off as he gets on the bike himself, riding away and sending cars careering out of the way.
Steve keeps on Bucky's tail with Cat Suit holding onto the back of his car. They all rocket through another underpass and Sam flies into the underpass.
Cat Suit leaps off the front of Steve’s car onto Bucky's motorbike and Bucky flings him over his head and the bike leans down on its side. Bucky kicks his assailant away, straightens up and rides on.
Cat Suit catches a ride on one of Sam’s legs and Sam tries to kick him away. Bucky throws a sticky bomb and blows up the roof at the end of the underpass, bringing down tons of rubble.
Sam tells you to hang on and you can feel his grip tighten on you as he stops and throws the Cat Suit man into the rubble. He throws Bucky off the motorcycle as Steve swerves the car through the rubble and leaps out, running as Bucky and the Cat roll on the ground.
When they stop the Cat is on Bucky right away but Steve jumps on him and pulls him off Bucky.
Steve stands up, facing the sleek and muscular overgrown black cat as the police arrive and surround you all, guns aimed. War Machine leaps down from above and raises both his suit hands, guns drawn.
“Stand down, now.” Rhodey says, aiming at Bucky and Steve who are standing side by side and at the Cat Suit Guy. Steve puts his shield on his back again as Rhodey continues. “Congratulations, Cap. You're a criminal.”
Police move in and force Bucky to his knees. The Cat raises his hands as a cop moves Steve's arms behind his back and you and Sam are also handcuffed and brought closer to the others by two police men. The cat retracts his claws and pulls off his mask revealing his face and you’re all shocked to see it’s King T'Challa.
“Your highness.” Rhodey says as Bucky's hauled flat on the ground and getting handcuffed.
-
You all get arrested, forced to change out of our suits and gears and taken to Berlin. Bucky is restrained inside a glass-walled pod surrounded by armed guards.
In an SUV sits T’Challa on front, then you, then Steve and last Sam. You’re quietly going through traffic until Sam very respectfully breaks the silence. “So, you like cats?”
“Sam.” Steve warns him while you snort in amusement, looking out the window to avoid what you’re sure will be a disappointed glare from Steve.
“What?” Sam continues. “Dude shows up dressed like a cat and you don't wanna know more?”
“Your suit…” Steve ignores Sam and addresses T’Challa. “Is it Vibranium?”
“The Black Panther has been the protector of Wakanda for generations. A mantle, passed from warrior to warrior.” T’Challa finally speaks up. “And now, because your friend murdered my father, I also wear the mantle of king.” Oh, no. “So, I ask you... as both warrior and king... how long do you think you can keep your friend safe from me?”
The silence that follows is deafening, as none of you know or want to give an answer to that, and you’re sure T’Challa doesn’t expect one.
“Sorry about King T’Chaka…” You say quietly after a moment.
“Don’t worry, miss Y/LN. He will be vindicated.” He answers back without missing a beat.
You look back at Steve and Sam and they both look as worried as you feel.
This is not going to end well, is it?
This place gave you the proper creeps; you almost clung to Clara as you walked past a vat with a skeleton in it. The three W's—that’s where the Tardis brought them to find Danny. Oh Danny, Clara had gone through lengths, You understood her grief, and you were grateful for The Doctor's grace because the events that happened just a few moments ago were startling, but you couldn't say you blamed her. She loved Danny. Well, it felt like she loved him anyway; she certainly cared for him deeply. She didn't deserve his untimely death; you wanted your friend to be happy; she deserved to be happy. This felt very private—it should have been private—between her and The Doctor; you just happened to be there. Well, that made you sound like you were a stray that showed up; you had been a companion for a while now, off and on, but you saw three of his faces now, the lanky brown-haired one, that said 'Allonsy'; he was the one you met in the beginning. The very next adventure you went on had been not great, but the more you tried to think about it, the less you could understand of it, like there was a large part torn from your memory, but he wouldn’t tell you what it was, and it was probably for the best. Then there was the bow-tie-wearing one; he was tired but pretended to be fine; he had anger; sometimes it scared you, but he was still The Doctor, your Doctor. During this time, you started to be an off-and-on companion. This new face was grouchy and started to reflect the years he carried with him, one that had the same burdens: lonely, scared to lose those who he cared about.
You were the last to step out of the tardis; the stonework was impressive, but the air was cold. You wrapped your jacket tighter around you as you followed after Clara and The Doctor. Things felt tense and odd, but you chose to use the 'seen not heard’ method right now. Clara was hurting, and people did things they normally wouldn’t when they were grieving, but her whole ‘throwing the keys into a volcano’ thing. Then again, the doctor did tell her he was exactly what she deserved; you wondered what that meant but chose not to question it right now; it wasn’t the right time.
As you walked, your eyes caught on each and every skeleton you passed. You were beginning to worry you would find his skeleton in a vat; what would that do to Clara? Clara could handle it, you were sure, but that didn't mean she should handle it. Grief was an odd thing. Your mind went back to the skeletons. How many were there? This was a horror show waiting to happen. Your shoes scuffed against the floor as you tried to be as close to Clara and the Doctor as you possibly could be, nearly running into the Doctor’s back when he stopped. A female voice spoke, and you assumed it was a recording. A bright logo with 3W was proudly shown.
“3W. Death is not an end. But we can help with that. Ever since 3W encountered the truth about the death experience, we have been working hard to find a better life for the deceased. At 3W, afterlife means aftercare.” The voice spoke in an oddly comforting tone.
Clara shifted “Okay. Bit strange?” She spoke, and you shrugged.
“Automated message maybe?” You voiced, your eyes on the skeleton behind you; you swore you saw it move, but that couldn't be right; it was just probably the water in the tank. You stared at it a few more moments than needed to make sure it was just your imagination.
“No, why have the scrolling and a voice? Is it difficult?” He asked like he knew something they didn’t. Both Clara and you looked at him, but Clara spoke first.
“Is what difficult?” She asked, and you nodded, seeing what he was going to say.
“Reading all those words back to front. Come on. We've come a long way.” He said to the logo projection. A woman walked out through the logo, which disappeared. She was taller than you, wearing a deep purple Victorian-style dress, very much like a governess would wear, and a hat with decorative red berries placed carefully on her head. Her eyes trailed over you in a sort of calculating look, like you were a surprise addition, but it smoothed over, and she looked over to the doctor, assessing him.
“Well, there is, er, no immediate hurry. We're just, er. We're just–” The Doctor struggled to find the words; his mind was racing, trying to place this woman. Her eyes returned to looking at him. Oh, how fun this was and would be for her.
“Hello. I hope you're well. How may I assist you with your death?” The woman said she was looking between the three of you. You almost choked at the words and gave a nervous sort of giggle snort. A nervous tick—you couldn't recall how many times you ended up nervously laughing at the worst times. You couldn’t help it. When you felt threatened, you laughed that nervous laugh. You shifted and covered your mouth, looking down, trying to calm your nerves. This didn’t feel good. The woman's eyes flinted back to you; something that resembled a smirk tugged at her lips, as if she were remembering something and taking pleasure in your nervous tick.
“Browsing.” Clara quickly said, and you nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, yeah, browsing.” The Doctor said, watching the woman with unease. The look made you uneasy too; if The Doctor was nervous, you knew you needed to be too. You shifted and watched the woman carefully; something felt off. Then again, the bones lurking in the tanks probably weren’t helping.
“Please, take all the time you need. At 3W, you always have the rest of your life.” She chimed, looking between the three of you.
“Oh, good. That's good to know, isn't it?” He cast a look to You and Clara, who also exchanged looks. "This whole thing felt bad, but you just couldn’t place it; you weren’t scared of death or the afterlife, but something about this made every red flag in your mind go off.
“Yeah. Great.” Clara murmured, and you stayed silent. This energy felt familiar, like you had felt it before, but the more you tried to grasp at straws to figure it out, the further away it felt, something was definitely wrong.
“Exactly what is 3W?” The Doctor asked, asking the necessary question.
“Apologies. Clearly, you have not received the official 3W greetings package.” The woman said in a tsk.
“Well, you know, it's just an unexpected." The woman cut him off, lunging at him, her hands wrapped into the lapels of his jacket. She walked it back against the wall with her body, staying pressed against him. Her lips pressed against his, her tongue pressed into his mouth. The Doctor’s features flashed in shock and maybe perhaps a bit of fear. She pulled back, kissing the tip of his nose three times. She stepped back, giving him space.
“Welcome to the 3W Institute.” She grinned.
“Clara, is it over now?” The Doctor asked, his tone breathless as his hands stayed sprawled against the wall behind him, trying to mentally work through the event that just happened. You watched and lifted your hand to your mouth, partly in shock, partly trying not to laugh about his expression, though it was very clear he was uncomfortable, and that shouldn’t be funny. But there was something about this usually stoic man being thrown off, though you were sure you would feel the same if someone randomly kissed you.
“I think it's over, yeah.” Clara nodded, watching the woman intently. The woman looked at her, her blue eyes scanning over her, as if thinking of something.
“You also have not received the official welcome package.” She took a step towards her, and Clara quickly put her hands up and stepped back, shaking her head. “Oh, I'm good, thanks. No worries."
Then the woman turned to you and stalked closer; that was the right word for it because it felt like a panther stalking its prey. “You haven't received it either.” She gave a slight pout, and you quickly shook your head and backed up a bit, but she followed, her hands on your arms, her eyes locked on you; she got you against the wall, pressing against you as she looked at your lips leaning in before the doctor cleared his throat. The woman's face flashed with annoyance for a brief, blink and you miss it, moment. She slowly turned her face to face him, not moving from you.
“Who are you?” He asked firmly. She smiled a little ‘she knew something he didn't’ smile.
“I am Missy.” She said simply, finally stepping away from you. You exhaled your breath, one you hadn’t even realized you were holding.
“Missy?” Clara asked. Your eyes were still locked on the woman, and your heart was thumping rapidly against your chest.
“Mobile Intelligent Systems Interface. I am a multi-function, interactive welcome-droid. Helping you to help me to help you.” She playfully looked between the three of you. A welcome droid? No, she certainly felt real, and then again, you had met some very realistic robots in your time with The Doctor.
“You're very– er– realistic.” The Doctor said. Did he catch on to that too?
“Tongues?” Clara asked, masking a bit of a smirk.
“Shut up.” The Doctor muttered and shook his head, still uncomfortable about Missy’s actions.
“I am fully programmed with social interaction norms appropriate to a range of visitors. Please indicate if you'd like me to adjust my intimacy setting.” Missy said, looking at him as he finally stepped away from the wall, before her eyes trailed back to you, looking you over in a way that felt not very robotic.
Missy scoffed and slighted her accent, putting her hands on her hips. “I am in charge.”
“Oh, yes, please. Please do that. Do that now right now.” He said quickly, You also took a sort of sidestep back closer to Clara and The Doctor. “I need to speak to whoever's in charge here.” He said, clearly back on his game, trying to get to the bottom of this.
“Well, who's in charge of you?” He asked quickly.
“I'm in charge of me!” She said, looking at him, saying it like it was apparent and he was being silly.
“Well, who repairs you? Who, who maintains you?” He said he was getting tired of this game.
“I am programmed for self-repair. I am maintained by my heart.” She said her hand was slipping down to grab his, lifting it to her chest and pressing his palm against it. “Is everything in order?” She locked eyes with him. You shifted; this felt too oddly intimate. Like this was someone who knew the doctor—the way the woman acted, the look the Doctor gave as his hand was on her chest.
“Who maintains your heart?” He breathed out. His eyes locked with hers.
“My heart is maintained by the Doctor.” She said it almost sweetly. This was getting too odd, and too quickly, the body language of both Missy and The Doctor worried you.
“Doctor who?” He asked, his voice tinged in something akin to nerves, which made you feel quite nervous again.
There was a moment of silence before the woman yelled “Doctor Chang!” before she walked away from The Doctor, disappearing around the corner.
“Who's there?” A man appeared quickly from a room, moving to walk over to them. “Hello?” he asked.
“Hello.” Clara greeted, and you gave a weak sort of wave. You tried to push the feeling of danger down as you looked at the unassuming man. He was a stark difference from the welcome droid.
“Hello.” The Doctor muttered again; he seemed to be in a deep thought, his hand still in the air where Missy had been.
“You can probably take your hand down now, Doctor,” Clara said, and the Doctor slowly lowered his hand.
“So. Hey. Condolences.” The presumed Doctor Chang said, looking at the three of you. You blinked, but it was a nice sentiment, you thought anyway.
“Condolences?” Clara asked, looking at the man in confusion.
“It's a mausoleum. It's our hello. Is there a particular dead person you want to talk to?” He asked, trying to move the conversation along.
“Yes. Yes, there is.” Clara said quickly. Doctor Chang motioned, and then you all started to follow him, though you hung back. This felt like it should be a private moment for Clara; Danny is, er well, Danny was important to her. You knew if you were speaking to a dead loved one, you would want privacy. So as The Doctor and Clara vanished into the room, you decided to take a quick look around; if it was really a mausoleum, there wasn’t any reason for concern, right? You walked along the quiet hall; the soft sound of the bubbling water from the tanks provided very little ambiance to calm your nerves. Things still felt off, but you couldn’t put your finger on it.
The skeletons felt like they were staring at you, but that couldn’t be right; it was just your nerves; at least that’s what you told yourself as you walked looking at the nameplates of the skeletons. It was wild to you that people would do this—to become glorified aquarium decorations. You imagined all the people who paid to spend the rest of their eternity in these vats; of course, this was no different from people being cremated or buried; it was just another method of burial, right? There were all sorts of new wave burial methods; you didn’t know about hanging out in a chair in water for the rest of time, though. You wondered how they kept the stability of the bones; if they cleaned the water, what was in the water to preserve the bones?
You were so deep in thought you didn’t even hear the click of her heels, but you felt the air shift; it was colder, and suddenly there was a presence beside you. You turned and jumped nearly out of your skin. It was Missy. Her eyes scanned over you like a cat that had caught a mouse, and that didn’t feel great.
“Have you turned your settings down?” You asked, eyeing her, trying to calm your rapidly beating heart. There was no way you should be this jumpy; you had to get it together. You faced way worse than a building full of spooky water skeletons and an off-putting welcome droid.
“What?” She paused looking at you before it seemed she realized something. “Oh right…yes…sure…” she shook her head a bit, chuckling a little bit to herself like there was a joke you missed.
“Not going to try and French me?” You asked, eyeing her. You shifted a bit, putting your hands in your jacket pockets as you watched her. Taking in her features, you wondered who she was modeled after; being a droid, with her high cheekbones, her pale skin, and those mesmerizing blue eyes, a lot of care went into making her.
“Oh, maybe… I haven’t decided if I want to give you a second chance after you so rudely denied me.” She waved you off. “Wonderful, aren’t they?" She tapped the glass with her nails, transfixed by the skeleton for a moment before she looked at you, tilting her head.
“You don’t act like a droid... I mean, then again, I wouldn’t know... but you felt too...human." You decided; she scoffed and let out an annoyed snort.
“Human? Don’t be a bitch.” She shook her head, offended. “As if I were, you humans are too messy, too emotional, too weak.” She waved you off again. Your eyes narrowed, but you shrugged. Droids shouldn’t have that strong of an opinion, right? Or was that insensitive? Droids were AI, and AI could learn to feel right? You certainly didn’t want to anger the woman by thinking things like that. However, her reaction felt too ‘human’ like too. She must have some impressive AI, but something about that thought felt weird.
“So Skeletons, in fish tanks, one hell of a way to spend eternity, don’t you think?” You said, looking back at the tanks, as you felt her walk around your back to your other side, sizing you up. You felt a familiar tug at you, like some of her mannerisms were familiar but you couldn’t place them, or you didn’t want to place them.
“Oh, it's worse." She shrugged, letting her fingers trace across your shoulder with a devilish grin, as she watched your pulse quicken the vein in your neck, giving the steadily increasing beats away.
“Don’t you mean it could be worse?” You asked, looking at her. The way she said that, that it wasn’t just an eternity, that it was something worse, your expression twisted to that of uncertainty.
“Is that not what I said?” She gave you a grin that made your stomach tighten. “But don’t worry, poppet.” She gave a mock reassuring nod, patting your arm lightly. “It’s not your fate, and that should be a comfort.” You didn’t like what she was saying; something was wrong with this welcome droid; that definitely didn’t feel like a droid.
“What do you mean, Missy?” You asked, turning to face her more.
“Put two and two together, dear. I know he picks them pretty, but one of you is bound to be smart.” She muttered.
You made a face and shook your head, looking at her, trying to figure out what she meant. It was clear to you she absolutely wasn't what she said she was. Missy studied you and then looked so offended. “He didn't!!” She scoffed. “I worked so hard on you for a year! A year of twisting and manipulating.” She rolled her eyes. “Of course he would go and ruin it; he usually doesn't mess with memories. Oh my dear, did I ruin you that badly? How cute.” She mused and tilted her head. She withdrew her lipstick out with a flourish and lazily applied it to her lips, in a show watching you intently. She popped her lips and hummed, putting the lipstick away.
“What are you talking about?” You took a step back, but she caught your wrist, pulling you back towards her. Gripping your wrist, she pulled hard; your chest collided with hers, and she grinned. “Oh, poppet. I am going to have a blast with you; I get to chip away at you all over again. His fault really for keeping you, but maybe this time he will learn. Doubtful, he really never does, does he?” She sighed and leaned closer to you. “Do you want to know a secret?” She mock whispered like it was a conspiracy.
You shifted and tried to get a read on her; she wrapped her arm around your waist, keeping you pinned to her. “All these silly little skeletons are really cybermen, and soon all the graveyards are going to open, and an army will walk.” She grinned and nodded. “And the human race will be nothing more than a footnote." She mused a bit. “He will see that we aren’t so different... and he will be delighted that I didn’t kill you...” She mused watching your expressions change. "Oh, don’t try to think about it too much, love; it's not worth it. All you need to know is that you and I will have a great time together, better than last time, I promise.” She nodded. “Oh! Can you keep another secret, just a silly little girl secret between us girls?” She grinned, grabbed your jaw, and tilted your face up. She bore a large, sharp grin and nodded, waiting for your response. “Oh! Don't give me the silent treatment now, Bunny.” She mock tsked and let her hand slide to hold the back of your neck.
“Yeah, sure. " You muttered quickly, trying to think of an exit plan. You had to get back to the doctor.
“The doctor isn't going to save you this time." She nodded again and suddenly crashed her lips against yours. There was the taste of an unknown chemical, rose and tea. As she held you in the kiss, something felt wrong. You tried to push away, but her hands were tight around you, you felt your body get heavy, and you were drowsy, trying to fight whatever chemical she introduced to your system. She pulled back, frowning at you. “What a tough little bird you are,” she mused. “Oh well, a kidnapping is a kidnapping.” She grinned and wrapped her arm around your waist, moving to pull you with her but grumbling about how you were dead weight before moving to lift you over her shoulder, heading further into the mausoleum away from the doctor, away from Clara, away from safety. Your last thought before you succumbed to the sleeping toxin was, ‘Who the fuck is this woman?’
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I hummed to myself as I steeped my tea, soft music floating through the kitchen. I'd finished eating my favorite dinner before now preparing to settle in for my favorite radio program. A calm, perfect evening after a long day. All torn to shreds by the ringing of a phone in my living room.
I closed my eyes and sighed, but left my tea on its own and moved to answer the phone. Hopefully, whatever this was could be dealt with quickly, and I wouldn't miss any of my radio program.
"Hello?" I asked, resting the phone in the crook between my shoulder and neck and reaching for a pad and pencil, just in case. I froze mid-reach when I heard the voice on the other end of the line.
"Hey, uh, this is Agent Daniel Sousa. With the SSR. I don't know if you remember me-"
"Of course I remember you, Daniel," I broke in. "What do you want?"
He hesitated, and I couldn't help feeling just a little bad. My tone had turned from friendly to harsh in a split second, and Daniel and I had always been friendly. But if he was calling, it must've had something to do with my ex, and I certainly didn't want anything to do with that.
I'd met Daniel through the course of dating Jack Thomspon, who I later learned was actually Agent Jack Thompson. I'd met him when I was young and in love with the idea of being swept off my feet by a tall, handsome man, and Jack had more than fit the bill. It wasn't until much later, after he'd proposed and come home from the war, that I'd realized I wanted so much more.
I wanted a partner. Someone to have my back and build me up, to support me through life the same way I supported them. Jack wanted a maid that he could also sleep with, a picture perfect housewife with no external life or ambitions of her own. So I'd left him.
Before that, though, we'd gotten far enough that I'd found out about the SSR, and met Daniel in the process. We were friendly, and had even been on our way to being friends before everything between Jack and I had fallen apart. Since then, however, we hadn't spoken.
"...I'm sorry to do this to you, but I need your help."
Daniel's voice brought me back to the present. I sighed, sparing a longing glance for the tea in my kitchen before plopping down in the seat next to the phone.
"I assume this is about Jack? Is he... alright?" I almost choked on the word, surprised to find I actually still cared about the answer. I gripped the phone a little tighter as Daniel responded.
"Yeah, he's fine. Look, it's a long story, but we don't have a lot of time. There are some very bad people putting the fate of the world at risk, and I'm working with another agent to try to stop them. We have a plan we're in the process of enacting, but... we need your help to make sure it goes off without a hitch."
"Who's the other agent, Daniel?"
"Agent Peggy Carter. She's one of the best we have."
I paused. I'd been fairly confident he was about to say Jack, and to have him say a female agent's name instead was a nice surprise.
"Okay... but aren't you in New York? I don't know if you remember, but I moved pretty far away after things ended between Jack and I."
"And landed in LA, right?"
"...Yes... How did you-?"
"It's not important right now, just... how quickly can you get downtown? To the parking lot behind the hotel hosting Calvin Chadwick's campaign event?"
"Daniel, I haven't even said yes yet! I haven't talked to you in years, and I honestly don't think I want to get involved in this."
"I wouldn't be calling you if it weren't important. Meaning end of the world important. Please."
I paused, letting out a long, heavy sigh. I could practically hear Daniel waiting impatiently on the other end of the line, but I ignored the pressure. Unfortunatley for me, I believed that he really wouldn't be calling me if it weren't an emergency. And I didn't want to leave the world out to dry just because I didn't want to see Jack.
Which, also unfortunately for me, I knew this would involve. Daniel had very carefully danced around the subject of my ex-fiance, and I knew that dodginess was intentional. One way or another, Jack would be involved. But damn it all, I wasn't willing to blow off Daniel's cry for help on behalf of the world just to avoid Jack.
"...Fine. Dammit, fine. I can be there in fifteen minutes. I'm on my way."
"Thank you, serio-"
I hung up on him, giving myself one moment to relax back in the chair with a heavy sigh before launching into motion. I'd just have to make myself a new cup of tea when I got home, and ask someone at work tomorrow what I missed on my radio program.
Just under fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the back parking lot of the hotel hosting the campaign event. Carefully, I stepped out of my car, on high alert for a certain blond SSR agent. I whirled around at the sound of a door flying open only to find Daniel Sousa climbing out of an undercover van. He looked basically the same as the last time I'd seen him, although he'd apparently traded in his sweater vests for a Hawaiian shirt and a blazer.
"Thanks for coming," he said, crossing the parking lot to meet me. I nodded, my gaze going to the woman behind him. Daniel noticed my attention shift, and nodded to her. "This is Agent Peggy Carter."
"Pleasure, I'm sure."
I nodded and took Peggy's offered hand for a shake, but didn't say anything else as I quickly brought my attention back to Daniel.
"Alright, Daniel, why am I here? Specifically, not just 'to help'. And where's Jack? Don't try to tell me he's not here, you wouldn't have been so dodgy and nervous on the phone if he weren't."
"Dodgy and nervous?" Daniel asked, sounding more than a little offended. I just raised an eyebrow at him, so he sighed. "Fine. Here's the thing... we actually need you to go in there and distract Jack."
I didn't respond right away. I just stared at Daniel, waiting for him to say 'suprise' or 'gotchya' or some variation of the same thing. He just stared back, grimacing slightly. I finally came to the conclusion that he was being serious.
"I'll... pop back into the van and make sure Dottie and Mr. Jarvis are alright," Peggy said much too casually as she backed away from us. I never took my eyes off Daniel, my stare cooling considerably from when I'd first arrived.
"Daniel. Do you want to explain to me what's happening here, please? And why you need to distract a fellow agent, and especially why you think this is something you ought to be involving me in?"
Daniel sighed and ran a hand through his hair, then shifted slightly closer to me. He lowered his voice, then spoke again.
"Look, here's the thing. You should know Jack's had some growth since you left. He's changed enough that I can actually stand to work with him, and I might still say I want to kill him, but I probably wouldn't follow through if I got the chance anymore. But recently, he's got his head up his ass again."
I snorted. "I really hope this is not going to involve you asking me to talk to him or get him to come around or whatever."
"Not quite. Recently, he's decided to take the side of some pretty bad people, although I don't think he realizes just how bad. A few of those people are in that event tonight, and we have operatives inside who need to get something from one of them. But Jack's in there, too. And he'll recognize our operatives if he's aware enough to see them, and since he doesn't seem to know better, he'll stop them. We can't let that happen. Which is where you come in."
I stared at Daniel again, then after a moment, started shaking my head. I was frankly a little speechless, which gave Daniel an opportunity to keep talking before I could get a cohearant thought together.
"Look, I know this won't be easy for you. I know it's unfair of me to ask, to call you out of nowhere. And I know the only reason you showed up at all is because we used to be friends. But please, please do this. I promise it's important, and if it weren't this important, I never would've asked. I... I've been out in LA for a while now, and I thought about touching base, but I figured you'd want your space, since I'm probably tied up with Jack in memories for you. But we need your help with this one."
I shook my head, holding up a hand to stop Daniel's pitch.
"Alright. I came all the way down here, and because it's you asking and I know that means this thing you're involved in is actually, seriously important... I'll still help. But then you are not going to speak to me for at least a month, after dragging me into this mess to manipulate my ex-fiance, and then we're going to go to lunch. And you're paying, because it's ridiculous that you've been out here this long and haven't talked to me, noble intentions or not."
Daniel huffed a laugh, the corner of his mouth quirking up in a smile. "It's a deal. Promise."
"Great. So... where exactly am I going to do your dirty work?"
"Just in there," said Daniel, gesturing for a set of doors at the back of the hotel. I nodded and turned to face the doors in question, intending to head in. But for some reason, I couldn't make myself start moving. "Uh... you alright?"
I cleared my throat and nodded, although I knew I wasn't convincing either of us.
"Yes, yeah, I'm... I'm fine. Just gonna... go in there. And see Jack. For the first time in a few years."
"Hey." Daniel shifted closer to me, resting one hand on my shoulder and lowering his voice. I huffed and closed my eyes, but didn't pull away. "Look, I'm sorry to put you in this position... if you really don't think you can do it-"
"No. We're not going down that path. I know you wouldn't have asked me if it weren't a legitimate emergency, so I can't afford to think about an out. Just... maybe you could give me a push?"
I didn't turn to face Daniel, but even out of the corner of my eye I perfectly caught the judgey, raised-eyebrow look he gave me.
"Are you serious?"
"Daniel, I am about to go in there and distract my ex-fiance. I am dead serious."
"...Alright. You ready then?"
"No, I'm not! That's the whole point of requiring a push!"
"Okay, okay! Geeze."
A moment later, I felt Daniel's hand on my shoulder, gently moving me in the direction of the ballroom. It had nowhere near the amount of force I'd been hoping for, but the thought at least was enough to get me moving.
I crossed the parking lot at a steady pace, focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. I pushed open the door to the ballroom without letting myself hesitate, striding through without looking back. I tried to ignore the sound of it slamming shut behind me as I strode confidently into the room, head held high despite the warring storm of emotions swirling in my gut. It took every ounce of strength I had to walk into that ballroom, but somehow I managed it.
And then I saw him.
I wasn't sure what I'd been expecting, but the moment I saw Jack, my heart stopped in my chest and my knees threatened to give out. So much history stood between us, and even though we'd ended on fairly bad terms and I knew I'd made the right decision, my heart still couldn't completely ignore everything we'd been through. Everything he'd meant to me.
I took a deep, shaky breath. Apparently, a lot of the world was counting on me keeping Jack from interfering in whatever Daniel had going on tonight. I'd agreed to come in here, and now I couldn't afford to fall apart.
I squared my shoulders, then strode across the ballroom, past dancing couples and schmoozing politicians. Everything faded away the closer I got to Jack, until I was standing next to him, just out of his peripheral vision, and we were the only two people in the world.
I reached out a hand to tap Jack on the shoulder, and time nearly stood still. He turned towards me in slow motion, and I watched his face go from one slightly raised eyebrow to wide-eyed, gut-punched shock. The moment our eyes met seemed to stretch for years, until Jack finally broke it, saying my name in a breathy voice that shouldn't have been audible over the sounds in the rest of the ballroom. Surprisingly, I didn't have to fake the slight smile pulling at the corner of my mouth.
"Hey, Jack," I breathed. He blinked at me a few times, maybe expecting me to disappear like some hallucination. When I didn't, he managed to find his voice again.
"Wh... what are you doing here?"
"I feel like I could ask you the same question," I said, voice soft. Speaking anywhere near normal force or volume felt like it would shatter something about the peace of the moment, or bring our problems back to the forefront of our minds. "I thought you were still in New York."
"I was. Am. Still in New York, that is. I, uh... they made me Chief."
My eyebrows shot up. Daniel hadn't bothered to mention that.
"Wow. Well... congratulations. When did that happen?"
"A little over a year ago," he said, shrugging his shoulders and glancing away like it was nothing. I knew him much too well for it to fool, me, though. He was beyond proud, and he wanted me to be impressed.
"That's great, Jack," I said, not entirely sure whether I meant it. "So is that what brings you out here?"
"Something like that," he huffed. He shook his head, staring off at the wall of the bar, apparently snapping out of the moment we'd found ourselves in with something else hovering over his head. It didn't bother me to be a part of that something, although maybe it should have.
"I take it this is more of that highly-classified, highly 'over my head' stuff you always refused to talk to me about?"
Jack's eyes slid back to mine, looking genuinely sad in a way I hadn't expected. Honestly, I'd been expecting to spark some anger. Instead, he looked like I'd just punched him in the stomach.
"I... wasn't great at communicating with you back then, was I?"
I snorted. "That's an understatement."
Jack sighed and took a sip of his drink, nodding slowly.
"Yeah. Yeah, it probably is. Look, I don't know why you're here right now, but..." He cut himself off abruptly, glancing away from me again with a shake of his head. I raised an eyebrow, just waiting for him to work up the courage to say what he wanted to say. The longer he took, the easier it was for me to help Daniel with whatever this was, anyway. Jack took a deep breath, shot the rest of his drink, and set the glass down on the bar before looking at me again. "I was gonna look you up, while I was out here. I've been putting it off, because, well, I wasn't sure you'd want to see me. But... since you're here now...?"
I started shaking my head. I couldn't help it. Jack, apparently undeterred, stepped forward and took my hands in his. I wished I could say helping Daniel was the only reason I let him.
"You hate me. I get it, alright? But I'm not the same man I was the last time I saw you."
"Oh really, Jack? Then what kind of man are you now?" I asked, unable to stop myself. "What are you doing here, schmoozing at some party with a bunch of shady guys in suits? How different is that to the last time I saw you?"
"Very different! Listen, I get it now. I understand what you wanted from me, and I understand why you left. You wanted respect, and I... I wasn't willing to give that to you."
I frowned, scanning Jack's face for any hint of inscenserity or rehearsed speech. All I found was an honest, open expression staring back at me, my ex-fiance looking more open and interested in talking about the hard stuff than he'd been once in the time we were together.
"But sweetheart," he continued, after a brief pause to let his words sink in. I met his gorgeous blue eyes that I'd fallen in love with so long ago, and a hand clenched around my heart. "I get it now. And... I want a shot at giving you that respect, knowing what I know now. Being who I am now."
I huffed a disbelieving laugh, shaking my head as I broke Jack's intense stare.
"Jack... are you kidding me right now?"
"Not even a little bit." He squeezed my hands lightly, stepping even closer to me. The hand around my heart dug its claws in. "I... I love you. I never stopped loving you. If you give me a second chance... I promise, I won't screw this one up."
A choked sob forced its way out of my mouth as the room started spinning under me. I pulled my hands away from Jack, shaking my head fervently as I did.
"I... You can't... I can't think about this right now. After everything you can't just..." I huffed, shaking my head again and moving out of the way as Jack reached for my hands again.
"Baby-"
I turned on my heel and ran before he got another word out. Hopefully, that was good enough for Daniel and his friends. One way or another it would have to be. I couldn't stay there for another second, and it was starting to feel like it'd been a mistake to come in the first place.
I'd been expecting some slightly charged conversation, maybe even some arguing. Breaking off an engagement wasn't usually amiable, and our situation had been no exception. I hadn't been expecting to see real pain on his face, or real regret, or real love still lingering there. And I definitely hadn't expected to feel the faintest hint of the same emotions in my own chest.
Whatever the hell that meant, I couldn't face it right now. Not when I was standing in that ballroom in the first place to trick and lie to the man giving me the apology I'd wanted for years before finally excepting I'd never get it. The guilt started creeping in like a knife to the heart, another thing I hadn't been expecting.
I didn't check to see if Jack was following me as I headed straight for the parking lot, back out the door I'd come in. A thousand different emotions and thoughts screamed through my head, and the only thing that seemed clear was that I needed to get as far away as possible from here, now.
"Hey!"
I don't know why I hadn't been expecting to run into Daniel, but I'd barely gotten a breath of the cool night air in before he called out to me, moving quickly from the back of their undercover van to where I'd parked my car.
"Hey! Are you okay? We didn't mic you up, but one of our agents inside said they saw you running out-"
"This was a bad idea, Daniel," I said, shaking my head and pausing to talk only because Daniel was in the way of the driver's door of my car. "I shouldn't have agreed to this. I didn't... I don't know what I expected. The same asshole I broke up with, I guess. An argument. Not... not what I got."
I moved to push past him, but he put a hand on my shoulder to stop me in my tracks. His eyebrows knit together as he scanned me up and down, concern radiating from him in waves.
"What happened in there? Are you okay?"
I shook my head. "It was a mistake to get in the middle of this, with you and him. He said some stuff... I don't know. I don't know, okay? This was stupid, I should've just stayed home. I need to go home, Daniel. So please, get out of my way."
Daniel hesitated again, looking me over, this time with a more critical eye. I huffed.
"I promise I'm not hurt, and that I'm fine to drive, alright? I just... I need to get out of here."
After another second, Daniel finally nodded and stepped out of my way. I didn't bother sparing him another glance as I got into my car and pulled away, putting as much distance as possible between me and Jack and everything to do with that ballroom.
When I got home, I replayed the conversation I'd had with Jack over and over again in my head, on an endless loop. I didn't hear another word from Daniel, or from Jack, which I tried to convince myself was for the best. When the radio silence stretched on for days, however, my arguments to myself became less and less convincing, and every additional day of silence was another day to overthink myself into a frenzy. Had something gone wrong with whatever world-ending threat they were dealing with? Did something bad happen to one or both of the SSR boys? Or was there some other reason the SSR agents continued to give me space?
By the end of the week, I'd just about decided to go track down Jack or Daniel or maybe Peggy, although I'd only met her in passing, myself. Finding a secret agency probably wouldn't be easy, but I'd been reeling and replaying everything in my mind for days, and I couldn't go back to pretending none of them had ever been part of my life again. I'd just started flipping through a phone book over my morning coffee, looking for any businesses that looked like feasible fronts for the SSR, when someone rang my doorbell.
I sighed, marking my spot in the phone book before standing and moving to the door, my cup of coffee in-hand. I almost dropped my favorite mug when I opened the door to find Jack standing on my doorstep in a nice suit, holding a bouquet of roses.
"Before you say anything, Sousa's the one who gave me your address. So if you didn't want to see me... blame him."
I couldn't hold back a laugh, at least half the weight on my chest lifting off with the knowledge that Jack and Daniel were both okay. I bit my lip, trying to keep control of myself, as I looked Jack over.
"I... I'm really glad you're okay," I finally sighed. "When I didn't hear from you for a while, I got a little worried..."
"We had... some stuff to deal with. But it's dealt with now. I'd love to come in and tell you about it... if you'd be willing to have some company for breakfast."
My eyes shot up to Jack's. He tried to look calm and collected, but I could see the way his hands fidgeted around the stems of the flowers, and the way his eyes searched my face for any sign of an answer in either direction. I sighed.
"Listen, Jack... I don't know..."
"Alright, look. I'm technically supposed to be leaving for the airport to catch a plane back to New York in about half an hour. But I also got Sousa to agree to let me stay with him for a while, if... if I need to stay in LA for a bit longer, for whatever reason. But if you don't want me here, if it's too little too late for you..." He clenched his jaw, swallowing hard and steeling himself before continuing. "Then I'll head to the airport and get out of your hair. And I won't bother you again."
I pinched the bridge of my nose, looking down and shaking my head to try to clear it. I'd sworn to myself when I moved out here that I wouldn't let Jack Thompson back into my life. I'd been confident it was for the best. But he really did seem different than he had the last time I'd seen him. And I couldn't ignore the way my heart still skipped a beat when I looked at him, or how badly I wanted to believe what he'd told me in the ballroom.
Finally, I looked back up at Jack. I met his ice blue eyes, the same ones I'd been staring into since we were basically kids, before he'd served in Japan and a thousand other things in our lives had changed. And I knew I couldn't send him away without at least hearing him out. I knew it might mean I got hurt again, badly, but I also knew the regret of never knowing for sure would eat me alive for the rest of my life.
"Jack... there's something you should know first."
"And that is?"
"It wasn't fate that brought me to the ballroom, or whatever else you thought it was. I... was actually there because Daniel called me to ask for my help."
Jack sighed. "I know. He and Carter told me. They seemed to have a guilty conscience about it. But I'll tell you what I told them: I don't care. It brought you back into my life, so... I'll take it."
The corner of my mouth tugged up again, and I tried not to let the excitement take over too much as Jack leaned a little forward.
"So... does that mean I can come in?"
I bit my lip again in a failed half-attempt to stop the smile rapidly spreading across my face. Finally, I let it win, and gave Jack a nod.
"Oh, thank god," he sighed, sagging and flopping over the doorframe, the flowers falling to his side for a moment until he looked back up at me. "You really had me thinking I was gonna have to race to make my plane for a minute there, sweetheart."
I laughed and shook my head, taking the flowers from Jack as I motioned for him to come inside. I shut the door behind him, then turned to lead him from the entryway into the kitchen.
"So... do you want some coffee?" I asked, moving to the pot before Jack answered. I knew he did.
"That'd be great." He paused, and I heard him sit at the table himself me as I added sugar and milk the way I knew he liked (although he'd never ask anybody else to add it in). "This place looks great."
"Thanks. It's been a labor of love, for sure. I learned how to fix just about everything in here that could break, since it started out that way."
I shot Jack a little smile as I sat down at the table across from him, sliding his coffee over. The statement was a test, and whether or not he knew it, he smiled back.
"If only you'd known all that stuff when we were in our old place. Maybe you could've saved me from breaking the sink beyond repair."
"If I remember right, I did try to help with that. And you told me to let you handle it while I made something nice for dinner."
Jack grimaced, taking a sip of his coffee. "Yeah. I do remember that. And... I'm sorry. I was an idiot back then. I wish I'd known then what I do now."
I nodded thoughtfully. He seemed sincere, which truly might've been a miracle-level personal shift. I still tried to keep my hopes from running wild, but it was getting harder by the minute.
"Thanks for the coffee, by the way," he continued. "I haven't had anything this good since... well, in a long time."
I gave him a rueful smile as he bailed out of "since you left". I sighed, taking a sip of my own coffee before looking at Jack again.
"So... why don't you tell me about all this stuff that kept you from visiting earlier? When I talked to Daniel, he said it was end of the world-level."
Jack nodded, running his hand through his hair. "I mean, it sure wasn't good. Might've been one of the worse things we've had to deal with. You're gonna like this though, since we saved the day. One of my best agents who helped solve all this stuff is a woman. Peggy Carter, she said she met you?"
"Only briefly," I said, smiling into my coffee. "She seemed pretty cool."
"She's damn good at her job. And so were you, by the way. You covered for her and Sousa perfectly when you showed up at that fundraiser. It took one of the people you were covering for walking straight into my path for me to realize something was up, and even then I didn't suspect you. Masterclass."
I huffed a laugh, but my smile grew so big I couldn't hide it behind my coffee mug anymore. Jack smiled back.
"Alright, so, this is kind of a long story. Especially if I start from the beginning."
"I want to hear all of it," I decided. "If you're up for it... including the stuff that came before this mission. I want to know about what you've been up to since... since I left."
Jack nodded, a hopeful smile pulling its way onto his own face. I could see him wrestling with himself to keep his cool, and I was happy to see him losing.
"Deal. As long as you promise to tell me everything you've been up to once I'm done."
"Sounds like we have a wonderful plan for the morning," I replied. Jack absolutely beamed back at me.
"I've never been happier to miss a flight in my life."
I laughed, and for a moment, I got a glimmer of the parts of my life with Jack that had made me stay for so long. His humor, and all the good in him that he worked to hide, but now, without the layer of separation that came from him not seeing me as an equal.
It had barely been ten minutes total of time spent with this slightly older, slightly different Jack Thompson. By far too early to say anything difinitively. But that little seed of hope in my chest had bloomed into a full bouquet since I'd opened my door this morning, and I couldn't help feeling that this time, things actually were different. Jack was different. And this time, maybe things would work.
Idea!! If yall know anyone who would enjoy writing this tag them in the comments! And if whoever does write this tag me! I wanna read it so bad.
A Steve x Reader x Bucky story
Reader was Steve and Bucky's best friend. But she wasn't a soldier or anything. She is hopelessly in love with Steve and Bucky knows this and tries to help her out. But she was in love with skinny Steve not the super soldier, who now barely answered her letters like Bucky does. But then comes Peggy Carter.
Then somehow Hydra kidnaps reader and makes Steve choose. Peggy or Reader.
And Steve chooses Peggy. Reader is absolutely heartbroken. But Bucky tries to save them and the whole train fiasco happens.
Years later, when Steve wakes up Readers family from then to present hate Steve. When Steve sees readers family he tries to reconnect but they all blame him for readers and Buckys deaths.
But Hydra made the reader into a super soldier. She's kind of like Bucky but also like Natasha. She and Bucky are a team he's the muscle she is the brain. And she still has the memory of steves betrayal and how Bucky was the one to save her.
Other things to incorporate into this angsty story.
1. After reader isn't brainwashed anymore she can be like the mom of the avengers.
2. Will slowly forgive Steve, but she will never forget.
3. She, Tony and Bruce will be science buddies
4. Loki could be attracted to her but that's up to you
5. She and Fury get along well.
6. Maybe add reader being a mom figure to Peter
7. Maybe she could save Pietro.
8. She and Nat train together.
9. Bucky after regaining memories always gives reader flowers
10. Steve begging on his knees for forgiveness.
11. Also have Peggy tell Steve off, since she saved herself, for having a civilian(reader) he could have saved die.
That is all.
And this could be a multiple part thing or 1 long thing.
“And oh! I know that you are feeling sad. I don't feel bad, cause even after 3 text messages, 4 missed calls… you still slept with my best friend.” (Steve’s Girlfriend [fem!reader] x Bucky Barnes)
⚠️ MINORS DNI!! ⚠️
message from izurusstuff: hello it is currently 1:30 in the morning (ok it was when i started but it’s been at least 16 hours) where i am and i’m having a bad crash out cuz im a history major and i have to analyze a primary source for a class i urgently need to graduate but my thesis keeps getting denied
this is literally my face rn because of it… so instead of making my eyeballs explode, i’m gonna flock to tumblr and write angst/smut of some of my fave marvel characters!!
summary: After Peggy Carter died, Steve Rogers has had an extremely rough time getting back into the dating scene. That was, until he met a translator at one of the UN meetings. Said translator (Y/N) and Steve have been together for a couple of years, but their relationship will definitely come crashing down once Y/N becomes a littleeee too friendly with Bucky Barnes.
warnings: this is smut. straight up sex. oh and there’s mentions of cheating bc the whole plot is that y/n cheats on steve with bucky. fem!reader. dni if you’re under 18 🤺🤺
On a list of things that were never supposed to happen, this was on the top of it. But that’s getting too far ahead.
Y/N had so many bullshit public appearances to keep up with because she was the girlfriend of Captain America. It’s like she had no true meaning to her persona anymore because everything had to be about Steve. How did his friends manage this?! Y/N would love to find that out.
Steve would always bring out his perfect little girlfriend and say how she inspired him— it wasn’t his fault things were like this, people just flocked to him because he was a hero and she had to just shut up and take it... everyone would always come up to Y/N and talk about how lucky she was to be Captain America’s girlfriend, and something just snapped in her one day when this happened. During that specific press tour, Y/N stomped off and began walking back to the Avengers compound. Was it a three hour drive? Yes. Did she care? No.
On her way back, she noticed a familiar face in a car at a stoplight— oh hey, it was Steve’s best friend, Bucky. Y/N wasn’t too close with him, but they had similar interests; Y/N was a Russian translator, and for a while, that’s the only language he was able to speak until he was able to recover from the brainwashing. So, they had a few interesting conversations that none of the Avengers could understand (except Natasha but she’s not a snitch).
Once he noticed her, Bucky rolled down his window, giving Y/N a soft smile.
“Snova brosayesh' Stiva?” (translation: ditching Steve again?)
“Da. Mne eto nadoyelo.” (translation: Yes. I’m tired of this.)
Bucky unlocked the car door, motioning for Y/N to hop in. She reluctantly took his offer and got in his passengers seat, looking around at the leather interior.
“Yeah. I love Steve, I really do. But it’s almost as if I get completely erased from the narrative when I’m with him.”
“RIGHT?! No one even cares to know anything about me! I-it’s just like I’m an extension of him!”
Y/N exclaimed, her fingernails diffing into the palm of her hand out of anger. God, being the girlfriend of Captain America fucking sucked. But Y/N felt terrible for thinking this way— she loved Steve. She truly, truly loved him. It was just hard to always be discarded just because you’re dating Captain fucking America… no one even knew your name aside from being “Mrs. Captain America.” Was it jealousy? Who knew.
“Yes, exactly. I’m dubbed as ‘Steve’s friend’ anywhere I go. Honestly, I’d rather be referred to as the Winter Soldier, because then at least people can acknowledge I’m seperate from him.”
Even though Y/N wasn’t extremely close with Bucky, she thought he was an interesting individual. Hell, he had a vibranium arm! His background goes crazy, and it was by far more interesting than Steve’s. Getting kidnapped by HYRDRA? Somehow getting reprogrammed to learn a completely different language? SOMEHOW CAN FEEL WITH HIS METAL ARM?? (yes this is actually canon to the MCU which still baffles me) He was a very unique person, and he deserved to be acknowledged as such.
“I personally think you’re more interesting.”
Bucky would’ve turned and looked at Y/N, but driving a car made it difficult to do. So he just smiled and holyshithisteethweresowhite— Y/N had to stop. He wasn’t her boyfriend, it was her boyfriend’s best friend. But he was so mesmerizing…
————————————————
After the long car ride where she talked nonstop with Bucky, they finally made it back to the Avengers compound. Bucky didn’t live there for obvious reasons, so he was originally going to leave once he made sure Y/N got inside okay.
“Hey… do you want to come in? You’ve been driving for so long, at least let me offer something to eat.”
Bucky shrugged and got out of the car. He was a bit hungry, so why not?
Y/N led him inside. Surprisingly, it was empty. Everyone must’ve been at Steve’s celebration. She wasn’t complaining though, she loved being there by herself. That also meant she could hang out with Bucky without having to answer to anyone.
“Here’s the kitchen. Help yourself! I uh… I’d offer to cook you something, but I kinda suck at it.”
Y/N murmured the last part, then trailed off to her room to change into comfier clothes. But she must not have closed the door all the way, because Bucky saw her get undressed through the crease in the door. He knew he shouldn’t watch her, but he was so mesmerized by her body. Wait, what was he thinking?! This is his best friend’s girlfriend! He had to turn away… he had to. But Y/N noticed him through the door crack. Fuck. She knew that door took extra work to close. She was about to cover herself in embarrassment, but the way Bucky looked at her… yeah… she had nothing to be embarrassed about.
Y/N walked to the door in her underwear, opening it a tad more. Bucky basically shoved it open once he was able to grasp Y/N’s face and pull her in for a kiss. They both knew it was fucked up, but they seemed to be the only people in the world to actually acknowledge each other outside of Steve Rogers.
Y/N and Bucky made their way to the bed, with Y/N pulling him on top of her. He was definitely so much different than Steve, and she loved it. Her hands ran through his hair while her legs wrapped around his muscular body... and boy. The pool that was already in her underwear grew even more.
Bucky could feel it too. His cheeks turned red as his eyes trailed down your half naked body. He really, really should stop now. But he didn’t want to, and by the looks of it, you didn’t either— so his lust got the better of him and he took off his shirt. Y/N’s eyes nearly exploded out of her head because dear LORD he was hot. His abs were so enunciated and toned and Y/N was able to see first hand just how cool the transition from the metal arm to Bucky’s body was.
Before Y/N could admire his entire body, Bucky moved from kissing her on the lips to kissing down her body, stopping when he reached her panty line. Y/N nodded at him in approval, then he slowly slid them down and kissed her soft, plush thighs. Y/N was trying her hardest not to crush him with her thighs out of reflex, but Bucky made it easier by firmly yet gently holding her thighs down. Yeah, Steve never did this… it was a new feeling for Y/N, but she loved it.
Then Y/N felt something metallic poke against her entrance— it was Bucky’s hand, pausing to wait for her consent.
“G-go ahead… d-do whatever you w-want to me…”
She murmured, which was followed by Bucky sticking a finger in. Y/N gasped, gripping the bedsheets underneath her while Bucky gave her a warm smile. Once he knew she could take it, Bucky added another finger and rhythmically pumped them into her… God, the moans she let out were so heavenly.
After a couple of moments, Y/N reached down to Bucky’s bulge, hinting that she definitely wanted more. He raised an eyebrow but complied, taking his pants off and lining up his length with Y/N’s hole. She was growing more and more desperate, so she forced himself onto his massive length with a huge gasp. It felt like she was being split open, but it felt so good. Y/N looked back up at Bucky with a sultry stare, signaling for him to thrust. Obviously, he got the gist and began slowly doing her. Ugh. If she wanted vanilla, she would’ve fucked Steve.
“Harder~!”
Y/N demanded. Her wish was granted— Bucky began thirsting into her like his life depended on it. He did feel a little bad though because he could feel her wince on his dick.
“You alright, doll?”
Bucky asked. He was unphased, but not because he wasn’t into it. He was just use to more… vigorous… activities, being a supersoldier and all.
“Yes! Fuck, yes!”
She exclaimed, guiding herself up and down his length while he pounded into her. God, he was so deep that she could feel him in her stomach.
“F-fuck! I-I’m gonna cum!”
Y/N exclaimed. Oh boy, was this fun…
————————————————
Meanwhile, the main six Avengers were out to celebrate Steve’s press tour. Poor Steve was worried relentlessly about his love, not realizing she was preoccupied with other activities. Tony was trying to distract him, so he didn’t really pay attention to the fact his phone has been going off regarding an ‘intruder’ at the Avengers compound. When Tony finally decided to check out the cameras, he nearly spit out his drink. Y/N’s moans were echoing throughout the floor in the video. Fuck. He had to explain what was happening.
“Uh… Cap… you may wanna see this.”
“I don’t know what to do,” you groaned as you threw your head back against the worn couch.
“I want the project to focus on movement, but lifelike movement. Human movement.” You mocked your professor. It not being nature themed had to be a jab just for you. All your projects were nature related or still motion.
“Professor Grace wasn’t targeting you,” Wanda said, letting out a chuckle at your dramatics.
“Are you sure you’re not a drama major?” Pietro laughed as he threw a butter packet at you.
“You two are the worst,” you sighed as you threw your arm over your eyes. Twins, why did my best friends have to be twins. The world is cruel, your thoughts drift.
“Why don’t you come to the track and draw me?” Pietro wiggled his eyebrows at you. You rolled your eyes in response.
“Eh,” you sighed. You didn’t want a solution at the moment. You just wanted to complain.
“She just wants to vent guys,” Natasha said as she came through the door holding a couple bags of takeout and a box of wine. “And I doubt she wants to see you and the rest of the track team in those tiny little running shorts you call clothing,” she sassed at Pietro. He just laughed, and stuck a pose with his leg up on the bar stool next to the island counter causing you all to laugh with him.
“Thank you,” you exclaimed as she handed you your food. You threw a 10 at her and settled back down into the couch.
“You know, you could come by the rink and draw a couple of the guys,” Nat mentioned. Her long term boyfriend was on the hockey team, Clint, a sharpshooting winger nicknamed Hawkeye.
“Pfft,” you scoffed. “I’m not going to have them think I’m one of those, puck kitties, or whatever they’re called.”
“Puck bunny,” Wanda chimed in, you pointed your chopstick at her and smiled.
Natasha let out a loud laugh, one of those full bodied ones, “god they won’t think that.” You raised your eyebrow at her and gave her an incredulous look.
“I can’t have them showing off because I’m there. I need to get them in their element. Not focused on what I’m doing,” you groaned again. “Biggest issue is I will need permission from the person or people. So they’ll have to know.”
“Like I said Princessa, draw me. You have my permission,” Pietro winked, you rolled your eyes at him.
“You’re too obvious of a choice. And as much as Wanda insists that Professor Grace doesn’t have a personal vendetta against me, she’ll love pointing out I picked the safe option,” you whined.
“Wanda, you haven’t seen Grace in class. She will take any chance to criticize her pieces. Nitpicking to the extreme.” Natasha chimed in, “if it wasn’t for Dr. Rain I think our resident artist would've failed out of this course by now.” Dr. Rain was the head of the art department and after a wholly undergraded piece you submitted last semester Prof. Grace was on thin ice. So she graded you fairly but took every chance to tear you apart in front of the class.
“I’ll think about the hockey team. It would be the least expected from me anyway,” you signed and got up from the couch taking everyone’s garbage and throwing it out. Football season was over, but the hockey season was in full swing right now and our team was top of the league.
“They have practice tomorrow night, you should come by and look at it,” Nat said, giving you a knowing look.
~The Next Day~
That's how you ended up in the rink. Underdressed because you didn’t realize how cold an ice rink would be in the stands. You were right though, about the type of girls that hung out there, they were scantily dressed and leaning over the tunnel that the players exited and entered from. How they weren’t frozen baffled you.
Nat was sitting reading a chemistry book across from you near the bench, as you didn’t want the team knowing you knew her. Well everyone but Clint. You’ve hung out quite a few times over the past couple years. You took a seat a few rows up opposite the bench near what Nat called the Sin bin (penalty box.) It gave an excellent undisrupted view of the rink and the players as they practiced.
The sounds of skates gliding over fresh ice and sticks bouncing off it was an almost soothing sound. The puck skittered across the ice as it was passed between teammates and shot toward the empty net. The goalie, a guy named Quill, was performing some kind of ritual at the opposite end of the rink. Nat mentioned he was a bit of an odd duck. But according to her all goalies were odd in their own ways.
The movement was fluid and easy to follow. How these giant men moved so weightlessly across the ice left you in awe. The Captain of the team was a blonde center named Steve Rogers, better known as Cap. Most of the school knew him, he was in a few of your art classes over the semesters. His girlfriend Peggy, was the student union president.
The star of the team was his blurry best friend James “Bucky” Barnes. He was a “winger,” with good prospects for the NHL according to Nat as she gave you a lowdown of the team as you guys went there just after practice started. He was nicknamed the White Wolf. How a man of his size moved that easily was mesmerizing, he almost floated over the ice and it looked like he was dancing. He was sinfully handsome as well. Every other week he had a new girl hanging off his arm. Undoubtedly one of those puck bunnies as they were called. He was the talk of the school after the football season concluded.
It made you dislike him on principle. The sports were definitely more priority in the school and the art department lacked thanks to these overgrown toddlers on skates. But you couldn’t deny his natural handsomeness, he looked effortlessly handsome and it was almost unfair.
You looked down at your sketch pad that you had been absently scratching at. Bucky seemed to be your muse because you couldn’t take your eyes off him as he effortlessly skated around the rink. You were in danger and you knew it. You gulped and closed the book before quickly gathering your things and leaving.
It didn’t take Nat long to text you and ask where you went. You sent her a quick message back saying you were cold. Not that Bucky, the school's playboy, had quickly become the muse of your piece.
“Nat, I thought you said your friend was coming by,” Clint asked as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“She did, she left because she was cold,” Nat chuckled.
“Anyone know the pretty one watching by the sin bin?” She overheard Wilson ask. “And what she was doing?”
“I think I was in a couple art classes with her,” Steve mentioned missing your name.
“I won’t complain if she comes by again,” Barnes said. Wilson raised a brow at him.
“What, so you can break her heart well?”
“Look doll, it’s not you,”
“It’s me.” Wilson and Stark said together. Barnes shot both men a glare. Then the high pitched whine of Barnes newest fling squealed his name and that was Clint and Nat’s queue to hightail it out of there. The collective groans from the rest of the team matched her thoughts.
~A couple days later~
“Loki, I don’t know what I’m going to do, this project is worth too much for me to go safe,” you sighed as you laid your head on his lap. He was reading some classic novel for his English class in the student commons. His fingers nimbly moved through your hair as he held the book in the other hand.
“Darling, just go back to the ice rink,” he knew almost immediately when something was up when you were walking together a couple days later. The perspective bastard. Loki was your best friend since middle school, his brother Thor was the star quarterback for the football team in both high school and here.
“Why would I do that,” you pouted.
“Because you clearly want to draw this man, and it will ruin you for months just like that piece you did of Helena,” he said shortly. Helena or Hela was his big sister and she was absolutely stunning. You had pined over drawing her for a piece for months before Loki forced you to ask her. It fixed everything and life back to normal after you painted the piece.
“I hate when you do that,” you whined, his eyes flicking down to your face.
“Hate what darling,” he mused.
“That, being reasonable and knowing what I need before I admit what I need to do.” He laughed and ruffled your hair affectionately.
“Comes with years of experience,” he sighed and placed his book down next to his leg. “Do bundle up this time will you,” he called as you walked away, you quickly flipped him the bird as you rounded the corner.
And there you were back at the rink again. Although tonight was a game night and the rink was packed. “20 dollars,” a nasally boy said as he pushed his glasses up, he looked bored out of his mind.
“Pardon?” You asked, looking at him.
“It’s 20 dollars to get in the game,” he said in an annoyed tone.
“Oh, I’m a student,” you showed your ID card, he rolled his eyes, “5 dollars.” You nodded and placed the five down. Only partners of the team got in free. Perk of fucking one of the team members you guessed, that must have outweighed the fear of them cheating or getting bored. You knew that wasn’t fair. At least two of the guys were in committed relationships and one was in an on again off again relationship. The rest though you weren’t sure, you shock your head at the thought.
You caught the flaming red hair of Nat in her reserved seat next to the bench, Peggy was next to her. There were a few open seats at the top of the rink, not great from getting a good view of what you needed to draw. But it would have to do. Instantly your eyes were drawn to Barnes, number 17, flying up the ice leaving the opposing team in the dust, snow? With a quick flick of his wrist the puck was shot sideways and Barton scored. The crowd stood and cheered loudly. You wished you had ear plugs now. The buzzer was insanely loud and made your ears ring. How Nat enjoyed this you’d never understand. Barton. You thought, Nat wasn’t big on sports, but she was big on her sweet boyfriend.
You focused on Barnes as he showboated around the rink, celebrating his assist. He moved so fluidly, you were mesmerized. You drew many little pieces focusing on the movement trying to capture the effortlessness of him skating. You were startled from your drawing when the buzzer screeched again the crowd roared in applause. The team scored again and it seemed to be Barnes that scored this time. Hats flew onto the ice as he skated around. That was odd, you squinted at the action. His eyes caught yours for a split second as he rushed past and it felt like eternity.
Agent Carter — Carterwood pairing
you committed, i’m your crime (push my button anytime) — rated E; 42,316 words
keep me company — rated E; 27,395 words
Summary: Lena Luthor has been at the center of several assassination attempts, orchestrated by her now imprisoned brother, and all of which have been thwarted by the DEO and Supergirl. But Lena is getting more and more frustrated by the secrets the DEO (and Supergirl by extension) is keeping from her. She vents her frustration to Kara, who against her better judgement agrees to go with Lena on a non DEO sanctioned outing to one of Lex’s abandoned buildings. There they discover a secret lab, which becomes their prison when they fall victim to a trap Lex has set for Lena and Supergirl, in the form of red kryptonite. Lena’s not worried, because for the first time in weeks she’s finally dodged her super hero shadow. It’s just her and Kara, so of course the red k shouldn’t have any effect on them. She’s not worried, until she sees the look of absolute panic in her friends eyes.
the best-laid plans (of mice and lena luthors) often go awry — rated M; 33,907 words
Summary: Events that happen between Lena and redk-infected Supergirl have serious repercussions. OR Lena tries to use science to save the world from any future red-k Supergirl encounters. i think we’re alone now (the beating of our hearts is the only sound) — rated E; 4,498 words
Summary: Chapter 1–Lena tries to tell Kara how she feels, but keeps failing miserably. And then Kara kind of beats her to it. Overall PG rating Chapter 2–Then they watch Jeopardy, and Kara resorts to desperate measures to break Lena’s winning streak. Oh, a solid M, maybe E rating. Smut, but somewhat educational smut, what with the Jeopardy sprinkled in.
[favorite hiding place (i will keep it safe) —rated E; 5,192 words
Summary: I felt the tiny changes in water pressure each time Kara turned on the sink to rinse her toothbrush. She always rinsed three times, three rounds of brushing. So far there’d been two. I waited for the third. And waited. Suddenly I felt warm hands brush against my sides and I yelped in surprise and spun back around. “Hi.” Kara greeted me happily, gently grabbing me by the waist and preventing me from slipping. She wore an amused expression, and nothing else. God, she was beautiful. I realized I was staring, and also that I wasn’t breathing. I inhaled quickly. “Oh, yes. Hello.” She gazed at me, eyes intense and burning, as she stepped a little closer—almost predatory—and I shivered a little in anticipation. “Wait, aren’t you supposed to be at a DEO briefing?” She shrugged. “They can start without me. Besides, I’ve been meaning to ask you. This shower head, it looks really nice. Good water pressure.” I gave her a confused look and she smiled mischievously. Still not putting it together, I nonchalantly replied something to the effect of “Only the best for Lena Luthor.” And laughed nervously. “Mhmm. It um, it looks like it’s detachable.”
you know you’re good when you can even do it with a broken heart — rated G; 5,387 words
Summary: Lena and Kara ignore their broken hearts by throwing themselves into their work. Then the two are thrown into a situation where they can’t ignore them anymore. OR (As a reader pointed out) The DEO provides some long overdue lesbian reparations!
‘til you sizzle, what a lovely way to burn — rated T; 2,347 words
Summary: Kara’s really sick from a Kryptonian virus she was exposed to, and decides to self-quarantine to protect others from catching the unknown illness. Lena doesn’t think Kara should have to weather her sickness all alone, and comes by to keep her company.
quit tapping on my window — rated E; 4,651 words
Summary: Kara’s secret is revealed, and they both deal with the fallout. OR Kara tries to give Lena some space, but can only go so long before taking matters into her own hands. OR Lena works toward forgiveness while also enacting some revenge. It’s probably not the healthiest way of going about it.
you kicked out the stage lights, but you’re still performing — rated T; 2344 words
Summary: It’s hard to be yourself, when it’s so ingrained in you to hide part of who you are away. OR An imagining of a fight Kara and Lena would probably have as a couple.
heaven isn’t too far away (closer to it everyday) — rated T; 3,339 words
Summary: Lena meets up with the super gang at the dive bar for what she thinks will be a night of drinks, conversation, and chill vibes. Instead, it’s karaoke night, and Lena gets roped into performing. Several drinks are quickly consumed, providing much needed liquid courage for singing…among other things.
you'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling (well, good luck, babe!) — rated G; 1754 words
Summary: Lena tries to freeze time to give herself more time to figure out what she's going to do. Of course, it doesn't go as planned, because the spell doesn't work on the one person she really wanted it to work on.
The Wrong One
Bucky Barnes x Reader, Steve Rogers x Reader
Summary: Reader meets Steve while he is on the run and stands by him through everything. Until he sees Peggy Carter again.
10. The Aftermath
Warnings: swearing, angst, difficult childbirth
Starting the next morning there was a barrage of romantic gifts showing up on her doorstep multiple times a day. Flowers, jewelry, candy, books by her favorite authors, knick knacks that Steve thought she would like. Constant texts checking up on her, phone calls where he sang love songs to her voicemail.
Y/N was already exhausted from her pregnancy and Steve's attentions, even though they weren't in person, just made it worse.
On top of that, the incident at the gala was all over the internet and gossip news sites and shows. Everyone was talking about Captain America's sudden reappearance and the confrontation with his very pregnant ex girlfriend and best friend.
Y/N woke up to hundreds of tags and notifications of articles, pictures and social media posts speculating on the meaning of last night's events.
Pictures of Bucky leaving her house as the sun was coming up. Putting a large bouquet of roses and a teddy bear with a Captain America shield in the house and stoically moving through the paps without saying a word. Even some pics of him jogging away.
When she tried to go for her morning walk, she opened the front door to find a mess of reporters still on her front stoop, keeping her from leaving. She could hear the sounds of cameras and was blinded by the many flashes.
Too many voices throwing questions out at her:
'Can you tell us what happened at the gala? Why did Captain America call you a whore?' 'When is your baby due?'
'Is that Steve Rogers child? If not who's the father?' 'Did you cheat on him?'
'Are you involved with The Winter Soldier?'
'Why is Bucky Barnes staying with you? Did he get into more trouble after the Flag Smashers?'
'Weren't you one of those pardoned after the snap? Do you think you deserved it?'
She felt overwhelmed and blurted out a distressed "No comment" and quickly went back into the house.
Y/N slammed and locked the front door then leaned against it and sank down to the floor, tears running down her face. She sat for a bit until she felt the baby start kicking up a storm. The movement reminded her of what was at stake. She laughed a little through the sobs and rubbed her belly.
"We're gonna be ok, little one. I don't know how we'll get there but I'll always be there for you."
Once she had calmed herself down, Y/N struggled to pick herself up from the floor, her large belly making the act impossible. She had to crawl across the floor until she reached a chair that she could use to support herself on her way up. As she was struggling to get up Bucky returned from his run.
He hurried over to her "Doll, are you alright? Why are you on the floor?"
He helped her stand up and pulled her into a hug when he saw that she had been crying. "What happened?"
Tears started forming before she could try to stop them "I was, I just I tried to go for a walk and th-th-they were all there, yelling and flashing and I couldn't-" she flinched and started panting, grabbing her belly.
She tried to curl up "Fuck!" She grabbed his arm "Bucky, it hurts" she whined.
Bucky's eyes grew wide and his heart sped up "Nonono, sshhh, you're ok doll. It's ok. Ivegotchu." He settled her on the couch and called Sam for a ride. While they waited for Sam he helped calm her down, breathing through the contractions.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes "Bucky, I'm not ready for this. Her room isn't done and I need more onesies. And, and I'm not ready to be a mom on my own."
He pulled her close and rubbed her back "I told you. I've got you. You aren't alone. If she's born tonight I'll get her room finished before you're ready to come home." He kissed the top of her head "You're gonna be a great mom. I just know it."
She nodded and calmed down enough to breathe through the contractions until Sam took them to the Tower. He waited in his office for them in case they needed a lift home.
Helen Cho was waiting and had Y/N hooked up to an assortment of monitors. As she relaxed Bucky held her hand and told Helen what had happened.
Helen shook her head "The press has been going crazy since Captain Rogers showed up at that party. They've been camped out in front but can't get into the parking garage. You might want to see about staying here in the Tower."
Y/N shook her head. "I just want to go home."
Helen pursed her lips "Well, let's keep an eye on you for the night and discuss what's next tomorrow. Remember we discussed the possibility of delivering early, especially considering how fast she has been growing. Try to get some sleep. Sargeant Barnes, you can stay in your quarters here tonight, she'll be carefully monitored."
Bucky shook his head "Not a chance, doc. I'm staying right here."
Helen shook her head "It's your back Sargeant. I'll see you in the morning"
Y/N looked over at Bucky with fear in her eyes but she tried to be brave "You don't have to stay in here all night, those chairs can't be comfortable. I'll be fine."
Bucky looked at her lovingly "Don't be silly doll. I'm not going anywhere."
She relaxed noticeably when he said that and whispered "Thank you Bucky."
He squeezed her hand "Anytime sweetheart."
She felt the butterflies but her heart clenched when she reminded herself he wasn't hers and eventually he would get tired of helping Steve's ex raise a kid that wasn't his. Even though he said he was fine with it she knew that couldn't last.
She tried to relax and get some sleep but it was a long time coming. When she finally did find sleep there were strange disjointed dreams with Steve and Bucky that she could barely remember in the morning, except for the feeling of unease they left her with.
Bucky woke early as he always did. He sat up and stretched without letting go of her hand. He sat and stared at her sleeping, in awe of her beauty. He couldn't wrap his head around Steve's actions. How could he leave this woman, she was so perfect. One of the few that didn't treat him like a monster.
As he watched he saw her stomach move and bulge he smiled, gently pushing on the spot that moved. He pushed softly and laughed a little when the baby pushed back. He spoke softly "My baby girl is an early riser like Uncle Bucky, huh?"
Y/N groaned, feeling the baby pushing on her bladder, and stretched. She felt Bucky rubbing her belly and opened her eyes. "Hey Buck, you sleep alright?" and yawned.
Bucky smiled "I'm fine, you're the one I'm worried about. How are you feeling?"
"M'alright. Contractions seem to have stopped." She looked at her belly and whispered "I really need to pee."
He chuckled "You need help getting to the bathroom?"
She shrugged "Probably." sat up and turned to the side, her feet barely touching the floor.
Bucky put his arm out for her and helped her to the bathroom.
Once she was settled back into bed he brought her some water.
They sat quietly for a little while before one of the nurses brought some breakfast. Helen showed up while she was eating.
Helen smiled as she entered the room "Good morning. How are you feeling today, Y/N?"
Y/N nodded "Much better. The contractions stopped."
Helen looked at the read outs "Your blood pressure is back down to normal, heart rate is normal and baby seems like she's good." She made some notes before sitting at the edge of the bed and looking back to Y/N.
"Everything looks fine now and you can be released. You have a couple of options. You don't need constant medical attention but the extra stress from a baby affected by the serum and Rogers erratic behavior are increasing your risks. I would recommend you stay in the tower. The sergeant has a room or there are some empty quarters we can set you up in.
You can go home but I really would feel more comfortable if you stayed close."
Y/N shook her head "I won't be able to relax in a strange room. I just want to go home. I can have Friday monitor me and contact you if there are any concerns."
She looked at Bucky pleadingly and he scratched his head "I don't know sweetheart, maybe staying here would be safer...." he trailed off, wanting her safe but not wanting to upset her any more.
He looked at Helen "I'll keep a close eye on her."
Helen shook her head "She needs to be on bed rest, no strenuous activity! And if the contractions start up again I want you to call me right away."
Bucky and Y/N promised to follow her instructions and Y/N dressed to go home.
When they arrived back at her home the press were mostly gone but the pile of gifts from Steve had grown. While Bucky helped Y/N inside, Sam cleared off the stoop, tossing Steve's gifts into a bag and shoving that bag into the coat closet for Y/N to deal with when she was up for it.
A few days passed quietly before they heard a loud knock at the front door while they ate breakfast.
Y/N, jumped at the sound and looked towards the front door with dread, who could it be this time?
Bucky went to answer the door, squeezing her shoulder, on his way to the entry, reassuring her that he's got it.
They knocked again, Bucky sighed as he reached the door. He tried to look through the peep hole but it was blocked, which made him consider leaving them out there. He decided it could be important so opened the door and was almost knocked down by Steve as he rushed in.
"What the fuck are you doing here, Rogers?" Bucky spat out.
"I'm here to check on my girls. Where is she?" He hurried to the living room where Y/N was struggling to stand up.
Her face turned to stone when she saw him. "Why are you here, Steve?"
Steve glared at Bucky "I'm here to check up on my best girls. Tell your boyfriend to back off."
Y/N scoffed "Your best girl died before the Blip. The only one here was just a sorry substitute. You're not welcome here."
Steve walked up to her and reached out for her hand, scowling when she pulled back. "Look, Y/N, I know I messed up but I'm here now and I want my family back."
She rolled her eyes "You have a really bad memory problem. You've already had your second chance and we are over. I won't be the one you settle for because I'm having your kid."
Steve tried to interrupt "I'm not settling honey, I made a mistake. Peggy was my dream, you're the reality."
She shook her head "So I'm the crappy wish version? I want to be with someone who wants me, who chooses me first not like some consolation prize." She was breathing heavily and feeling lightheaded.
Bucky moved quickly to her side to support her, murmuring supportive words into her hair. "Are you alright, love? You look a little pale."
He helped her sit back down and gave Steve a dirty look. "She is high risk because of the serum and doesn't need you coming in here stressing her out. We've already had one scare so you should just go. We'll let you know when she's born."
Steve shook his head "I won't let you push me aside when it's my fiance and my child you're trying to take away from me. You're talking like you're a couple, like it's your kid."
Y/N had it. "Enough! I am not your fucking fiance, Steve! All I am is your baby mama and that's all I will ever be to you. How many times do I have to say this?
Bucky isn't the one who deserted me without a warning. He has been here, by my side ever since he found out." She rubbed her temple "you're giving me a migraine, I'm on bed rest. Please leave you are stress-" her hand moved to her belly "owww, oh no. Bucky" she cried, panicking.
Bucky wrapped his arm around her shoulder, rubbing gently "Try to relax doll, you're ok and I- what the fuck was that" the bottom of his pants suddenly felt wet.
She started hyperventilating "I think it's my water. My water broke." She looked at him scared.
Bucky rubbed her back "Don't worry sweetheart. I'm gonna take care of you, ok. Let's get you dressed and get your go bag. Ok?"
Y/N nodded nervously and went to her bedroom to take a fast shower and get dressed. She put her hair away from her face then threw on a pair of sweats, one of Bucky's t-shirts and a pair of slippers.
She returned to the living room carrying an overnight bag and noticed Steve was still there, looking concerned.
She pointed at him "Why are you still here, I told you to leave."
Steve shook his head "No. It sounds like you're about to have my baby so I'm coming with you."
She scoffed "Like you care. You can sit in the waiting area because I don't want you anywhere near me." Her face pinched and she growled "Fuuuck!" looking around to see Bucky on the phone.
He finished up quickly and went to take Y/N's bag and offer his arm in support, looking at her concerned "You ok honey? Remember to breathe. I spoke to Helen, we're meeting her at the Tower. I also sent a message to Pepper, she will check up on you after we get you settled."
Y/N nodded quickly and tried to remember her breathing while keeping a bruising grip on Bucky's arm. He flinched lightly and started walking towards the garage, leading her slowly.
Bucky realized Steve was still there and shouted back at him "We're going to the Tower, don't much care what you do."
Steve nodded curtly "I'll meet you there."
By the time they arrived at the Tower Y/N was crying, sweating profusely, trying to breathe between sobs "Bucky, this is too much, I can't"
He picked her up bridal style and headed up to the medbay "I know it hurts doll but you can, I know you can. Helen will help and you'll have our beautiful girl in your arms before you know it." He grimaced as she tensed during each contraction but didn't notice the blood until he set her down on the bed Helen Cho pointed towards it.
Bucky looked to Helen with wide eyes, scared for the first time in years.
Y/N felt like she was being ripped apart as the contractions increased until she barely had a chance to catch her breath in between. She had a death grip on Bucky's hand and cried in pain as Helen did an exam to see how far along she was, brow furrowed at the blood.
Helen spoke softly as she removed her gloves, calling for an anesthesiologist and faced Bucky. "I'm going to give her a spinal for the pain, her blood pressure is pretty high as well. I'm going to do an ultrasound to see where baby is because she was head up last time." She spoke softly to Y/N explaining what was happening next and assured her that the baby was not in any distress.
As Helen performed the ultrasound her face showed her concern. She kept her voice calm so as not to stress Y/N any more than necessary. "So, she's still head up so we're going to have to do a c-section. The umbilical cord is wrapped around her neck as well. She still not showing any signs of distress and I want to get her out before she does. Sargent Barnes, you need to scrub and get a surgical gown and we'll meet you in the OR."
Bucky nodded and tried to keep the fear off of his face when he spoke to Y/N "I'm gonna go get cleaned up and meet you in surgery, ok sweetheart? They're gonna hook you up with some pain meds so you'll feel better soon and we'll get your baby girl." He kissed her forehead and walked away.
After she was given the pain meds Y/N calmed down a little before she was prepped for surgery until the baby monitor started beeping. She looked at nurse "Whats that? Is something wrong? Is she ok?"
Bucky came in wearing a surgical gown/cap/shoe covers and took her hand to calm her down as Helen quickly went to work.
30 minutes later Y/N's newborn girl was placed on her chest. Bucky took a couple of pictures and teased her about her slightly stoned looking smile.
After baby girl was cleaned and weighed, and mom was all stitched up they were taken to a small room where they worked on nursing until baby latched on. Bucky was right there making sure she was comfortable, warm enough, had enough support, gave her drinks and couldn't have been more proud if he had delivered a baby himself.
Steve was in the waiting room and looked anxiously at Helen when she told him that baby and mom were in the first room if he wanted to see them. He almost ran there but stopped at the doorway. The scene in front of him broke his heart.
Y/N looking beautiful but very tired holding his daughter as she nursed while Bucky was sitting on the bed next to her, metal arm around her shoulders, talking sweetly to the baby as she gripped his finger, a look of love and awe on his face. They made a beautiful little family.
Steve couldn't stand it and left without saying a single word.
