On Seeing Movies As A Writer

You can’t shut it off. The fact that you are a writer is such a part of your being that you there’s no off-switch. I go to see movies, and I listen to people leaving the theatre saying, “Yeah, I liked it.” I hear that no matter how good or how terrible the movie I just saw actually was. My sister Peg says that I am way to hard on movies, but I can’t help it. If it’s a story, even it the story is delivered on the screen instead of in a book, it’s still a story and it still filters through  my internal editor.

I'm going to give you an example of what I'm talking about. Currently, in November 2019, there is a movie out called ‘The Good Liar’. If you are reading this in, say the year 2021, you probably do not remember this movie. It's one of those minor movies that big stars make that no one remembers two years later. I personally would give this movie a C+, and that has everything to do with the writing. The following I suppose could be considered a spoiler, so if you actually watch the movie I hardly think you'll care.

In any case, the plot of the movie is that Ian McKellen is a con artist. Helen Mirren is a widowed woman searching for companionship. Helen has a grandson who doesn't like Ian right off. The arc of the story for the first hour leads you to believe that Helen Mirren's character might not be who she says she is, that she might figure out that something's up. You get a sneaking suspicion that she is actually playing him. So far so good, but it's hardly a fresh idea. It reminded me of the movie dirty rotten scoundrels, or at the end the woman that they were trying to con actually conned them both out of money. This I think was the main problem of the current movie, that what they were trying to do it already been done before. So then how do you account for that problem?

Herein is the major problem with the movie: and that is the way they tried to fix this issue. As it turns out, with absolutely no foreshadowing whatsoever, Ian McKellen is actually a German who had been a Nazi who was working for the Allies just after the war. A British guy who he was working with got killed, and Ian's character took his identity and went back to England. This information comes completely out of nowhere, but it's not the worst example of this problem.

The worst example comes when it's Helen Mirren's turn to tell her side of the story: as it turns out, again without any foreshadowing at all, we find out that Ian's character when he was a boy, raped Helen Mirren's character. Her name was Lily, and in the big climax, she tells Ian that she’s been tracking him this whole time, and that she had left him a clue as to her identity, and she points to a painting of some lilies behind him. He turns and says, “Lily...” and figures it out. But the problem comes from the fact that WE HAD NO GODDAMN IDEA THERE WAS A PERSON NAMED LILY!!! There wer no hints dropped that he might have been a Nazi, or even that he might have had an alternate identity, or especially that she did. 

This was not a plot twist. A plot twist is a surprise where the opposite of what you think will happen, actually happens. In Harry Potter, we thought Snape was the bad guy, and then we find out that it’s actually Quirrel. That’s a plot twist. If Harry goes down and gets through the obstacles only to find out that aliens from outer space have been trying to kill him for some reason of which you had no idea, no foreshadowing, nor hint of, then it’s just annoying. 

In this movie, by the time the big reveal happens, we know that she’s ripping him off. They left more than enough clues as to what actually was going on. The only thing we didn’t know was why. The whole bit about him being her English teacher and raping her and all of that did not fill in vital clues, it was merely an information dump at the end to lazily tie it all together. Very, very sloppy.
