"You're travelling alone with two small kids and 3 big suitcases? You're brave!"

"Brave or stupid," I joked

"Maybe both,” she responded flatly. Gotta love the Dutch for being blunt. But let me first explain how me, my two kids and our three large suitcases ended up in a strangers car in Amsterdam.

In December, with the help of friends and family, I packed up all our stuff, put everything in storage and said goodbye to our flat (apartment) in Victoria, Canada. First stop - Gramma and Grandpas house, Melrose, Scotland. 6 weeks of home cooked meals, copious amounts of tea, and the boys enjoying lots of extra attention and cuddles! Next stop - Amsterdam!

Due to some miscommunication and poor judgment on my part, we arrived in front of Schellingwouderdijk 331 - a narrow house, on a narrow street, 200 houses away from where we needed to be. About a 15 minute walk, I was told. Or it would be a 15 minute walk if one was not laden with a 7 month old, a 3.5 year old, 3 pieces of luggage and a buggy (stroller). I began pushing half the stuff about 10 metres down the street, and going back to collect the rest, while cursing myself and my friends. A kind local offered to help, and then enlisted a neighbour to take us down the road in her car - a pleasant woman who agreed I must be stupid. Finally in front of 131 my toddler discovered a public slide and trampoline and promptly took to enjoying them before announcing he’d had an accident… my friend had informed me that our Bnb was in the garden of the house, so I trapsed the 3 of us (one quite wet) and one of the three suitcases down a steep Dutch driveway to a compact garden and looked around. The owner of the house popped their head out to ask what on earth I was doing. No, this was not an Bnb but he’d help me take my luggage back onto the street. After some googling and consulting with neighbours, I changed the toddler into dry trousers and we climbed into another kind Dutch woman’s car. This time we headed back to 331 and inspected the garden and the front door to discover that this was indeed the Bnb and my friends had been sitting inside chatting and vaguely wondering where we had got to.

Finally esconced in our accommodation it was time to reconnect with two of my best friends - people I met at Lester B Pearson United world college in Victoria in 2005. Some say that when you have kids you grow apart from your friends that don’t have children, but I think that’s short-sighted. The trick is to get your friends to fall in love with your kids while they’re small and cute - so they help you out when your kids are big, and less-cute. Plus friends without kids often have two hands free and can be enlisted to push prams, chase toddlers and entertain the baby while you eat. And in the evening they’re available to drink wine and gossip. Needless to say Amsterdam was a lot of fun! My toddler particular enjoyed chasing pigeons in DAM square and the loft beds in the Bnb.

With our bellies full of poffertjes and stroopwaffels we were set for our next destination: Lima, Peru!

UWC selection process // interviews

So since I’ve been asked a few times about what I would recommend doing to be prepared for the UWC selection or the interviews, I decided to write a blogpost dealing with the subject. These tipps are all rather general and nothing too precise because all interviews are different and the questions depend on you and your application. So that’s it for the introduction. Enjoy! ✨ – So I really think it’s important to have some basic knowledge about current affairs. You should be able to name a few things which are going on on our planet at the moment and to talk about them. Just spend some time reading the newspaper or watch videos on politics or do whatever you like to do to be informed. – Also, be passionate. If an interviewer asks you why you love dancing, show them that you love what you’re doing! You should show them that having a long CV is not the reason why you do something, but because you want to and because it’s your passion! – Keep talking and don’t be shy! You don’t have to be afraid of the interviewers or their questions. They want to get to know you and they will realize how great you are if you just give them the chance to do so! If you are talkative and show them your personality, they will realize your potential, which they can’t if you don’t give them enough information on you. – This might seem a little contradictory to what I just said, but it’s okay to take your time to think. If you don’t know an answer immediately, wait a second, breathe and think. Ask them if it’s okay if you think about it for a little while and then, if you’re content with what you came up with tell them. There’s no reason to freak out just because you don’t know what to answer immediately. – Be nice! If you are in a very heated-up discussion with other applicants, you shouldn’t shut them down because you think you’re point is more valid than theirs. If that’s obvious to you good, but don’t forget about politeness! – Don’t be nervous, just smile and have fun! It won’t change anything if you overthink everything you and the interviewers said. Smile! Be happy! You’re there for a reason, so try to be confident. Also, spend as much time as possible with the other applicants. Don’t see them as rivals, but as (future-)friends. I don’t think I’ve ever met so many amazing people at one place. Listen to what they have to say and talk to them. To sum it up, they are awesome and you have to enjoy every second you can spend together. – Think about why you applied and what you love about UWC and why you should be a part of the movement. Read your application again, and be aware of what you said. Reflect on your values and your passions and on the person you are. It will help you a lot to know exactly who you are, what you want the most ( UWC obviously..) and why you want it! UWC is a unique and wonderful movement, but why exactly is it your dream to attend one? – Also if the application process in your country is as cool as the one in Germany and you stay at a youth hostel for some time, bring food and games. The adventure is beginning...

I really got in. I did it. I am an official part of the UWC family now and I will be attending the UWC in Canada in 2017-19. For now, I don’t know how to handle all the excitement and happiness, and maybe, just maybe, that’s the reasons why I am wide awake at 4 in the morning. I am just way too happy to sleep. I think I will use this blog to talk about life before pearson college and all the preparation, but I also consider writing on a regular basis about what’s going on, what I think about pearson etc (once I am there). But I am incredibly happy and grateful for this opportunity and I feel like I still need time to realize this is not a dream but my actual life now. If you will be attending Pearson in 17-19 as well, please let me know, because that would be just too amazing to talk then! That’s it for now 🌎

Orientation Week

UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. 

I've spent one week at Pearson College, approximately 3082 miles from home, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Surprisingly, I have already learnt more about myself as well as more about the world which we live in, the world which is so much more than any average human being knows of. 

Unfortunately, for many people, they do not have the best of lives - something I have learned is do not judge a book by its cover. Many people here have lived hard lives and worked their whole life to achieve this opportunity...this has not only made me appreciate my life, but it has also encouraged me to help out within our global community. With that being said, I'd firstly like to use this post to bring awareness to a few global issues. 

A Natural habit - Theists, Atheists and Agnostics all endeavour to improve their own lives... but what about the rest of the world?

Facts and Stats: 

Over 3 billion people live on less than US$2.50 a day. 

The poorest 40% of the world account for 5% of the global income, the richest 20% account for 75%. 

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. 

Nearly 1 billion people entered the 21st century unable to read or write their names. 

2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation.

1.8 children die a year due to diarrhea 

1 billion children (of 2.2 billion) are in poverty. 

121 million children lack education

25% of humanity live without electricity.

At threat of extinction are: 1/8 birds, 1/4 mammals, 1/4 conifers, 1/3 amphibians and  6.7 marine turtles. HUMAN BEINGS CAUSE EXTINCTION.

I am a UWC student, this shows that I obviously want to make a difference in our society, to start, I would just like to raise your awareness to a few charities which have made and will hopefully continue to make the world we live in a better place.

With that being said, I would like to reflect on my first week at UWC Pearson College of the Pacific. UWC has nine values, these have been expressed through orientation week in many ways and I plan to tell you how... 

International and Intercultural understanding

"It is an experiment, after all. Put 40 students from all over the world in the same residence, put four to a room from four strikingly different cultures, and see what happens"- Jack Matthews 

As a UWC student, you are forced to love those around you, and to do so, you must first understand and appreciate their personal values. Unsurprisingly, by the end of UWC, students learn not only learn amazing universal values, but change their values sometimes entirely. 

Celebration of difference

This week, we celebrated the Inuit Culture, the Jew tradition and different national dances. Another event which the whole campus is looking forward to is North America's culture day where North Americans will share their culture with the rest of us.

Personal responsibility and Integrity

At Pearson College, you are expected to take care of yourself, this is a strange concept for many like myself...but UWC makes you want to do it, rather than forcing you to do it. 

The best example I can think of at the moment, would be that the school tells you what to do, and it is best if you do get it done, however, where and when you do it is all up to you. This teaches you huge self responsibility and motivation. 

Mutual responsibility and respect

When you live in a house of 20 girls, 20 guys, you learn that you have the respect other's spaces. At Pearson college, there are ONLY two rules. Literally.

No sex in rooms.

The house must be quiet after 10:30pm. 

These rules are obviously pretty reasonable... Your house is now a public area, you live in it with 39 other students and two house parents, you need to respect them. 

(note that illegal activity is also unacceptable not only because it is illegal but because most students are here on a visa and therefore really shouldn't violate Canada's laws)

Compassion and Service 

This week, we had a rotation where we did community service, action (physical activity) etc. It is also mandatory for any IB student to complete two CAS (creativity, action and service) programs a term. Also, during your summer break, you must complete 80 hours of community service. 

Respect for the environment

Composting and Recycling is obviously huge in Canada, but it is stressed throughout every UWC in the world. We learned more about why we recycle and how we recycle. 

A sense of idealism

As a UWC student, you are expected to complete 3/4 project weeks, usually, you use this time to improve yourself and the community by doing a CAS for one week. People have done pottery, build shelters or even dive expeditions. These teach you the realism of improving the society and exactly how it can be done. 

Personal challenge

You are obviously challenged personally when you complete everything I have mentioned in this post. You are challenged to take care of not only yourself, but others and the environment and also in many other ways. For example, IB is one of the most vigorous academic systems in the world. 

Action and Personal example

This is demonstrated tremendously by the 2nd years during orientation week as they personally organize everything in order to show us firsties how everything is done. 

  FUN FACTS ABOUT MY WEEK:

I've seen deer on campus - one which was being chased by one of the dogs. 

I went bay jumping in 14 degree waters. 

I went kayaking. 

I went camping.

I've met so many different people from so many difference places. 

I saw a racoon.
