you had your clipboard in hand, moira was tinkering with an experiment she had been working on. the only reason you took this job is because you heard a rumor about the famous scientist who was able to harness the power of gravity, Dr. Siebren de Kuiper.

it was all rumor of course, most of your fellow students beforehand didn’t believe it was real and told you the job was a scam. either way you wanted to know more about Siebren de Kuiper and what his abilities were actually capable of doing.

moira looked at you and raised an eyebrow. “once you’re finished up you can head home.” she sighs. “this needs more work but i need to rest, hope you understand.” you nod.

moira had been extra exhausted as of recent, which for the normal human it would be reasonable but moira was different. she was constantly awake and constantly doing things, evening risking her sleep for days on end to finish a project. but now she was taking long breaks, not returning for hours on end, and always showed up with a mark or two on her. something wasn’t right, you could feel it. as moira gave you a wave as you headed out, you waited a bit before following her.

you quietly followed her making sure not to make any noises. instead of turning into her sector where her living quarts were, she walked in the opposite direction. your eyebrows raised in surprise as you continued to follow her. as she made her way in she open the door, locked by a passcode but a huge window outside of the door showed a room. a tall man sat on a wooden chair next to a desk full of books.

Siebren de Kuiper. you recognized him almost immediately. his eyes sunken and bags dark. his eyes scanned the books but his face looked puzzled as if her was confused on how to read or didn’t understand the material.moira talked to him, you couldn’t make out the words but you saw him almost rolling his eyes, uninterested in her words.

Siebren looks out the window before spotting your eyes peaking up from the window.his eyes widened a bit, he was confused. you eyebrows raised and you felt a pit in your stomach not knowing how he will react. he nodded at you before looking back at moira acting as if he had seen nothing.

you looked down at his big hands. his fingers switching to different numbers. 9-7-1-1-3-5. he looked to make sure you were looking.it took you a minute to realize but he was giving you the code. you took a pen from your lab coat pocket and wrote it down. you nodded at him before seeing moira getting ready to walk out of the room.

you moved over and hid behind some crates and waited for her to exit. once she did and walked far enough away you got up and ran over to the door. Siebren looked at you as you did so. you put in the code and opened the large door.

Siebren sat on his bed and offered you the desk chair. you smiled and sat down. “you’re Siebren de Kuiper right? the scientist who tried to harness gravity?” he nodded. “but once i figured it out..” he sighed. “i went mad, i don’t remember anything, or even who i really was.”you gave him a sad look. “i’m sorry. i’m Dr. l/n, i only took this job find out about you.” you bit your cheek nervously. he nodded, “well i’ll make you a deal, you help me learn more about me and you can learn with me. i know that the scientist here only wants me for power. but you my dear seem to just want to know me.”

you nodded and gave him a smile. “just one question, should i bring like trigger objects? maybe photo graphs or books.” he nodded. “the thing is, i can’t read very well anymore. would you mind reading them to me?” you shook you head with a smile. “not at all sir.”

after that day you began to read to him everyday as well as bring objects to try to get his memory back.he seemed to enjoy philosophy books, he liked them due to unlocking a memory about really enjoying his time with his philosophy teacher in college.

you also brought him treats. his favorite was chocolate cake but absolutely hated carrot cake but he remembered he ate it as a boy and threw up.

you gave him some of your own personal photographs to look at, most of your childhood to see if he could relate to any of them. he saw a cigarette in one of the photos and said he didn’t like those because they tasted gross.

after awhile of getting to know Siebren, you two became quite close friends. he learned about himself but also about you. because of this he wanted to do something special. you had told him awhile ago your favorite book. so once he felt comfortable enough about his reading skills, he requested the book from moira. “weird request Dr. but it’s fine. i’ll fetch it tomorrow.” after he got the book he began reading it. he took a pen and started writing on the book.

the day of your birthday you returned with chocolate cake and a record. in the last month moira had gotten him a record player on request.you sat in your usual chair with Siebren on the bed. “happy birthday dear.” he said with a smile. “thank you Siebren. i brought us cake to eat as well as a record of Beethoven.”

he smiled and nodded. “i got something for you.” he grabbed the book from his side table and handed it to you. you had a confused look, he told you to open the book so you did.inside was all of Siebren’s annotations. what he thought of the book, the characters, what was going on, how he thought some characters acted like him or you, and even just some little doodle.

you smiled so hard and a small tear ran down your face. “thank you so much” he wiped the tear off of your face and kissed your forehead. you got up and put the vinyl on the record player. you both sat talking a bit more while eating chocolate cake.
