Striking antique purple kimono with blazing hôju (wish-fulfilling jewel looking like flaming pearl, an ancient pattern representing the cintamani stone).
The mirror skirt pattern placement is a good example of ryôzuma 両褄 , which was all the rage for late Meiji-early 20th century formal kimono like this irotomesode.

Queen Mary's Lozenge Tiara Has Been Found!
Tumblr media
Queen Mary's Lozenge Tiara which was thought to have been languishing in the vault for six decades has been found with a member of a royal family - just not the British royal family.
Tumblr media
The tiara first appeared on Queen Mary in the 1930s though it was likely made a bit earlier. She wore it with thirteen pearl shaped pearls attached to the top but those were removed by the time the tiara made it's way to Princess Margaret.
Tumblr media
In 1948, the tiara was worn by Princess Margaret for her first tiara appearances during the inauguration festivities of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. For a long time it was thought to be a loan but now seems to have been an 18th birthday present from her grandmother. She wore it a few times in her early years of tiara wearing but it was never a favorite and the last public appearance was in 1965. Princess Margaret did sell some jewels during her lifetime so it's not out of the question that this tiara was discreetly sold sometime after 1965 with no mention of the owner.
Tumblr media
And now the current owner is Queen Azizah of Pahang! The tiara was bought by Queen Azizah in 1988 from a jeweler in New York City with no mention of it's provenance. It has been worn regularly by the family since.
Tumblr media
Saad Salman from The Royal Watcher made the connection when he was in Malaysia for the wedding of Prince Muhammad and Natasya Adnan. He mentioned that they might be the same tiara to Queen Azizah and she invited him to take a closer look. She is very interested in historical jewelry and has been great about providing information about the Pahang collection. I'm a little sad because I've long wanted this one to appear on a member of the BRF but it's so wonderful that not only does the tiara still exist but it's still worn instead of being stuck in a vault.
Congrats to Saad for such an amazing discovery!

The Duchess of Teck's Pearl and Diamond Brooch
When Queen Mary’s brother Prince Frank died in 1910, they had just repaired a decade long rift, during which he altered his will to reflect his feelings towards his sister.
James Pope-Hennessy said around this time (when his sister has just recently become Princess of Wales) Prince Frank was alienated from her due to her disapproval of his mistress Nellie, Countess of Kilmorey as well as her attempts to help him “with money and good advice.” He says Frank found, “the burden of gratitude too heavy to bear.”
Tumblr media
Frank’s will states, “The jewel given me by my godfather Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria I leave to Eleanor Constance, Countess of Kilmorey with the caveat that she will leave it to H.R.H. The Princess Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland daughter of His Majesty King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.”
Queen Mary was horrified by the contents of the will and in 1910 paid the Countess £10,000 for the Cambridge emeralds to be returned to her. But this jewel was not included in that purchase. The Countess died in 1920 and the brooch presumably went to Princess Victoria. The brooch was later either given to or left to Queen Mary by Princess Victoria (who died in 1935) and was later photographed in her photographic jewel inventory. She left it to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The brooch has now presumably been left to King Charles.

Rare pattern for this antique purple kimono, depicting dragons in the clouds among what looks like strings of pearls.
Hold by dragon's claws, those jewels are probably hôju (Cintamani/wish-fulfilling pearl). They also remind me of other pearls associated with dragons in Asia, like Ryûjin's mythical tide jewels.
