Sons of Anarchy and Peaky Blinders are the same show. Observe:
Club of bad boys does shady shit in their many attempts to go legit
Main character kills someone for the first time onscreen with the help of their lover, has a minor freakout about the murder, then fucks their lover for the first time onscreen afterward
Dead wife pieta
Main character tortures/murders those he believes are responsible for his wife's death but ultimately feels it's his fault she died
Main character cries about his dead wife while fucking someone else
Main character's baby son is kidnapped
Main character has two kids by different mothers
Matriarch of the club gets raped in season 2 by the bad guy/s who are then murdered for doing so in the season 2 finale
Big complicated criminal plans you only see pieces of that come together at the end of a season into a coherent whole
Hints of the supernatural
Tommy Flanagan is there

While some people should not be allowed to watch peaky for butchering tommy, his emotions and his love for Grace….
Here’s the answer to the ridiculous point haters and toxic lovers raise time and again!! “He didn’t open up to Grace either”…well she is the first one he said, will you help me, i am sorry and after they have been together for 2 yrs, words like “i am scared” flows easily through him, clearly showing how strong and trusting their bond is, they must have had thousands of such intimate moments where he revealed himself to her little by little. He was a “work in progress” with her unlike lizzie, who he shut off completely emotionally.
“‘And I’m scared grace, I’m scared for you, and I’m scared for the baby, it’s unfamiliar to you but not for me okay. I can be scared and carry on. I know it’s not pleasant see or a joy to be around, and I’m sorry.’”

My Thoughts On
FINN SHELBY
* Spoilers ahead for S1 - S6 of Peaky Blinders *
Tumblr media
The way that Finn as a character was pushed aside and rendered useless 99% of the time is a shame. I wish Steven Knight had had different plans for him (or just any good plans at all would’ve been nice).
I do find the age gap between Finn and all the other siblings a bit too much. If we’re going by the wiki ages, which make sense within the show, Finn was born in 1908. This also must be his birth year, since in season 1 of the show, he says he’s about to be 11, and S1 starts in 1919. His oldest sibling, Arthur, was already 21, Tommy was 18, John was 13, and Ada was 11 when he was born. I can only imagine that the Shelby parents started having kids in their teens, because the age gap is massive. It would’ve made more sense for Finn to be Arthur or Tommy’s son, rather than their brother with that age gap.
It also drives a bit of a wedge between the older siblings and Finn, because Arthur, Tommy, John and Ada all grew up together. They experienced their difficult childhood together. Finn didn’t. Maybe this is part of the reason why I don’t see the same bond between Finn and his siblings as they all have with each other. Don’t get me wrong, they all loved him. I never doubted that. But as Finn grew into a man, I did wonder if all of them actually liked him.
We also know that Mrs Shelby died when Finn was a baby, and Mr Shelby left the family shortly after. Finn never had parents, but he had substitutes for those roles.
Polly was the only mother he ever knew. She raised him. That being said though, it did seem like when Michael came back into her life, Polly put Finn on the back burner. We didn’t really see much of them together at all, apart from in season 1. I don’t even know who Finn lived with in S3/S4, because he was still so young, he had to live with someone. I think Polly cared for him very well when he was a little boy, but once he got into his teens, and Michael was back in the picture, she didn’t seem to care as much. Maybe because he didn’t rely on her to take care of him so much because he was getting older, she took a step back, but I honestly don’t know why she didn’t seem to have more of an active role in his life from S2 onwards. Maybe we should just say it was a poor writing decision.
Tumblr media
Both Arthur and Tommy seemed to fill the fatherly role in Finn’s life. They both looked out for him when they could. They, along with John when he got old enough, made sure to financially support Finn, and give him more than they had growing up. That being said, they weren’t the best role models. I mean, Finn was already doing cocaine at 13/14, something at least Tommy was apparently aware of. Granted, they didn’t necessarily understand the issues with cocaine at the time, but people knew it was a drug, and kids obviously shouldn’t be doing drugs, so I don’t know if Tommy should get a pass for that less than fantastic big brother behaviour.
After John’s death, Finn is clearly brought more into the Peaky Blinders fold, to fill the hole that John left behind. Unfortunately though, Finn lacked the ruthlessness that John had. He could never quite measure up. Perhaps because he never had to fight to get by, like his big brothers did, he didn’t have that drive to succeed. He just kind of skated by the whole time. He didn’t have the aptitude for violence that John had, so he disappointed Tommy/Arthur when it came to Peaky business because he couldn’t handle it, but that’s not really something I would blame Finn for. That’s more on his brothers for expecting & hoping that he’d be like John. Tbh, I don’t know why they didn’t just make him handle legitimate business, rather than the criminal stuff, because he clearly wasn’t suited to it.
Tumblr media
I can’t really say a lot about his relationship with Ada, because I don’t remember any significant scenes between them, apart from the scene in 5x01 where Finn gets shot and talks to Ada for minute after the bullet is removed. It’s pretty brief though. You’d think he’d have more scenes with his only sister, and I think it could’ve been interesting to see the difference between his relationship with her versus his relationship with his older brothers, who he always felt like he had something to prove to.
In S6, we see that he gets married to a woman named Mary. We know nothing about Mary. She’s in maybe 2 scenes. We know nothing about their relationship. There’s no development or love story for them. I truly don’t know why this was included in the show because it added absolutely nothing. I can only assume that the marriage might have some sort of relevance in the movie. If it doesn’t, I just don’t see the point in including it all. It was a meaningless moment.
His friendship with Billy Grade is ultimately the thing that ruins him. He quickly becomes close friends with Billy when they work together. He trusted Billy, because he was always more trusting than his brothers, so he told him things he shouldn’t have.
Tumblr media
By the time we get to the end of S6, where he has to choose between shooting Billy, or saving him by shooting Duke or Isiah, he has been friends with Billy for years. It doesn’t really feel like that as a viewer because of the time jumps between seasons, but Billy was presumably his best friend by that point. With that in mind, was I supposed to be surprised that he tried to shoot Duke to save Billy? He didn’t know Duke. Duke meant nothing to him. Isiah used to be his friend, but they seem to have drifted apart as they got older. Obviously he wasn’t going to choose Duke, or Isiah, over his friend.
If Tommy and Arthur were in that room, instead of Duke and Isiah, I think things would’ve happened differently. When faced with a choice between his brothers and his friend, I think he would’ve chosen his brothers. I definitely don’t think he would’ve ever pointed a gun at either of them or tried to shoot them. But when faced with a guy he barely knew and a friend he wasn’t that close to anymore, he chose Billy. Yes, Billy was an informant, albeit a reluctant one, but he wasn’t only that to Finn.
Do I think he deserved to be disowned by the family at the end of S6 for this decision? No. I think he should’ve been punished in some way, and moved to the legitimate side of the business, because he simply wasn’t smart enough to handle the criminal side of things. I just find it hard to imagine the Shelby’s disowning one of their own, even one that does stupid stuff like Finn. That’s still their baby brother. I don’t like that as Finn’s ending in the show. It was bad enough when SK turned Michael into an antagonist; I don’t want to see Finn meet the same fate in the movie.
I’m really hoping Finn isn’t an antagonist in the PB movie. I really don’t want to see that. I don’t think that one situation with Billy would fully turn Finn against his family anyway. Against Duke maybe, but not his brothers. If he is one of the villains in the movie, I’m going to be disappointed. I’d rather see his final ending in the movie be him coming back into the family, and in some way finally earning the approval of his brothers. Perhaps he could do the whole double agent thing, where the audience thinks he’s a villain, but he’s actually helping his family. I don’t know, I just want more from him as a character than an antagonist storyline.
That’s kind of the way I felt about Finn the entire series; I just wanted more from him. He was always falling a bit short as a character for me. Never quite hitting the mark. I hope that he can finally reach his potential in the movie.

Note
Do you have any other favorite characters in WoT besides Lan? Iirc, you mentioned Perrin being one of your favorites
Warning: Includes spoilers for season 2 of The Wheel of Time under the cut
PERRIN MY BELOVED
I have loved him since watching the first episode and watching the man get traumatized by accidentally killing his pregnant wife 😭
Don't care for the whole Perrin loves Egwene storyline they were going for in the first season
So glad it looks like they dropped it for s2 - but who knows if it comes back
I loved his relationship with Hopper and was absolutely devastated with him when Hopper died
I love ghe whole thing of him becoming a wolfbrother! Love how it's been developed since the beginning. Can't wait to see where it goes next
Also love when we get to see him fuck shit up
I love his brotherhood with Mat with my whole heart. The definition of a bromance
Definitely have to check out more of Marcus Rutherford's work
Tumblr media
ALSO MAT
I loved Barney Harris' portrayal of him in s1. I love that his main concern was taking care of his sisters. I was bummed originally when I found out Barney wasn't coming back in s2.
HOWEVER, I love the way Donal Finn portrayed him in s2. His portrayal is obviously so different. You see a different side of Mat we didn't get in s1.
He's still a bit of a fool (affectionate) but
But I am mad that they kind of dropped his concern for his sisters
Loved the scene of him and Rand talking and them both telling each other that their friends are not better off without them 😭
Loved that he did what he could not to touch the cursed blade
AND THE WHOLE THING WITH THE HEROES OF THE HORN *chef's kiss*
His absolute devastation when he stabbed Rand 😭
I love Mat Cauthon with my whole heart
Tumblr media
ALSO MY WIFE NYNAEVE
Let me start off by saying: Talented, Brilliant, Incredible, Amazing, Showstopping, Spectacular, Never The Same, Totally Unique, Completely Not Ever Been Done Before, Unafraid To Reference Or Not Reference
AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING ICON SINCE DAY ONEEEE
She is a survivor, a warrior, a protector, a healer
And she is my (and Lan's) EVERYTHING
Love that the only time she seems to channel is when Lan is in danger (more like dead or dying) because BITCH SAME - I know she's channeled besides that but let me have thus
I absolutely loved the scenes where she was living her best life with Lan and their daughter 😭
Wish we could have seen them actually reunite in reality but those scenes at Two Rivers will hold me over til s3
I'm curious to know what's behind the mental block that prevents her from channeling
I would die for her
I would kill for her
Tumblr media
I am lowkey in love with Moiraine - but that's mostly because Rosamund Pike intimidates me and brings that intimidation to Moiraine and I am attracted to women who intimidate me
She is such an interesting character
I'm glad we got to explore more of her past in s2 and meet her family
Also her whole thing with Siuan makes me so soft - up until the end 😭
I'm always here for any type of queer representation even the ugly side of it
STOP THE HOMOPHOBIA AND LET THEM BE FISHWIVES TOGETHER GODDMANIT
Tumblr media
I have a big old crush on Lanfear/Selene
Give me a hot villain and you KNOW I'll fall in love with them instantly
And she is a hot villain
But also woman just wants to be loved
I need to know what happened between her and Lews Therin - it's always a bitch ass man tearing beautiful women down
I am so in love with Natasha O'Keefe and have been since Peaky Blinders
She has my consent to tie me to a wheel if she wants
Tumblr media
LASTLY
Ishamael, my beloved 🥺
Another hot villain
I wouldn't say he's a fav but I definitely was a little bummed when he got killed
I really think Ishamael, Lanfear, and Lews Therin had a throuple situation going on and I don't care if anyone disagrees
Because at the very least Ishamael and Lews has something a little gay going on 👀

I think for me personally it’s less about Tommy’s motivations and more about the fact that something within the plot line w Diana rang false for me narratively bc of this strange sense of repetition that peaky doesn’t usually struggle w

Random thoughts on Peaky Blinders
Tommy Shelby is basically a gangster James Bond… he’s got skills, plans, ambition; he’s usually 2 steps ahead of the game, emotionally detached, and seduces and sleeps with every woman he encounters
Grace’s breathy whisper voice drove me nuts.
So they let Esme take all the kids? Not the just the ones that were hers? Shouldn’t John’s kids with his first wife/girlfriend stay with the Shelbys or their mother’s family? Why weren’t they more worried about John’s children?
Finn pretty much raised himself. Everyone moved out to their nice houses and he was still stuck in Small Heath. Soon as Michael appeared, Polly was like, Finn who?
I liked Ada better when she was a communist.
Maybe Ada can hook up with that cute colonel
Michael just abandoned his girlfriend at the abortion clinic?
Tommy treats Lizzie like shit. I don’t know if a baby will help the situation, but lots of luck to you, Liz.
I’m not mad at Linda.
Baby Charlie was really cute.
Polly is my fave, but now they’re making her a witch?
Curly is too good for all of them.
Mad-dog Arthur turns out to be the most endearing.
I was surprised that John was killed and glad that Arthur’s death was a fake out.
Some of the non-English ethnic characters were portrayed a little too “caricature-y”  see: Luca Changretta and Russians.
Luca Changretta – WTF was that? I’m not blaming the actor but this was like the cartoon characterization of the “20’s New York Italian Mobster” with the slow gravel voice and the toothpick, etc. The character needed to be taken down a notch or two.  All he needed to do is have a NY accent, not sound like the Godfather.
People in the 1920’s were really good on researching and getting info on others before the internet.
Aberama Gold Ramalama bang bang
Everyone’s doing coke like nothing
By the end of S5, Tommy’s going to be the new King of England.

My Thoughts on
ESME SHELBY
*spoilers ahead for S1 - S6 of Peaky Blinders*
Tumblr media
Ah Esme, how I wish I’d seen more of you. When compared with the other Shelby wives (Linda, Grace, Lizzie), I don’t think Esme was really used as much within the story. She was left more in the background for some reason.
When we first see Esme, she’s being married off to John, apparently because she was a “bit wild”. I love the scene at the wedding when John and Esme first see each other. You can see the pleasant surprise on both of their faces, and this is the beginning of their mutual attraction, because as we see throughout their time together, they really fancied each other.
Was the marriage the right thing for Esme? No. I don’t really think so. Through the marriage, John gains a wife and a new mother for his four children who have been running wild since their birth mother died, an alliance with the Lee family (which Tommy wanted), and if I remember correctly, a car from Esme’s father.
What did Esme gain from the marriage? Well, I suppose we could say that she gains the security of a husband (which was an important thing in that time), albeit John is also quite wild, cheats on her, and is a criminal. She loses her freedom, which was clearly what her family wanted because they didn’t agree with her actions. In that time, going “a bit wild” is probably very tame compared to what people do nowadays. She also gained four young children, that she was now in charge of raising, along with the rest of the Shelby family as her new relatives. I’d never say that she didn’t love her stepchildren - she clearly did, and she took them with her when she left in S4 - but it’s a lot to suddenly become a stepmother to four young children.
The interactions we see between Esme and the Shelby clan (from what I remember) are never overly positive. Sure, she could get along with them decently enough when needed, but she didn’t seem close to anyone.
Her interactions with Polly range from Polly holding a knife to her neck in season 2, to them seemingly getting along well enough to work together - and strike together - in season 3. We don’t see what their relationship was like in the years between S3 and S4, but they clearly never got any closer, as Polly didn’t seem devastated when Esme left after John’s death.
Tumblr media
Another Shelby that she shared a few scenes with was Tommy, and I think it would be generous to say that she disliked him. In S2, she seemed to respect him, and spoke at the family meeting about not wanting them to start expanding the business into London. Her reasons were understandable; she was afraid for her husband’s safety and she knew how dangerous London would be. And yet, everybody just brushed her off like she was an idiot.
All she wanted was for her family to go on the road or live in the country and be safe. She tried to convince Tommy that it was the best course of action, and in return, he grabs her face and tells her that if she talks about it again, he’ll cut her from the family. It’s overly harsh and personally, I wanted Esme to slap him when he did that, but of course she didn’t, so oh well. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
It seems like she properly hated him after the end of S3, when he almost got John killed. As we see, Esme is always loyal to John and anyone who crosses him, crosses her. She’s protective of the ones she loves, so it isn’t a shocker that she hates Tommy for mistreating him. She even charges at Tommy in the morgue after John’s death, grief riddled and furious.
I can’t remember much about Esme’s appearances in S6, probably because I did not like that season, so I’m not going to speak much on that time or her scenes with Tommy. She doesn’t really have a relationship with Arthur or Ada, so I can’t really say much about them either.
Her relationship with John did seem to become genuine, despite it starting off as an arranged marriage. I’ve seen some people say that John and Esme never loved each other because they didn’t choose each other and they were basically forced to marry each other, but I would say that from what I saw, I do think Esme loved him. (I’ll talk about John’s side of things if I make a post about him). She tried to keep him safe, despite his lifestyle, and when he died, I feel like no one can say that she wasn’t devastated by the loss. That scene right after John is shot dead outside their house where she runs out and lays her head on his shows how heartbroken she was.
Tumblr media
Ironically, after wanting to escape to the country for a while because she believed it would be safer and better for her family, their country house is where John dies in S4. I don’t think that she would’ve ever found peace or safety as long as she was married to John and connected to the Shelby’s. She only managed to get the life she wanted for herself and her family after John’s death.
Esme was a strong woman for making that decision to leave the Shelby family. Perhaps it would’ve been easier for her to stay within their circle as John’s widow, but staying would’ve meant being around the family and Esme clearly didn’t want any of them around her children. So, she packed up all six of her kids - not that we ever get an official number or even the names of their kids, but I’m pretty sure that they had six altogether - and went away.
While the loss of her husband was awful, in the end, I’m happy that Esme finally got to make her own decisions about her life, and get her freedom back. When we last saw her in S6, she was on the road with some of her kin, living freely, and I would say that out of all the characters, she probably got one of the best endings.

also i hate that grace was fridged in season 3, a season where her background as a spy would have been perfect, and yet i also love season 3, and fully know that part of why i love it is because of the angst over grace being fridged, and i hate that this is true. gah.
