#peaky blinders meta?

so...snape fans have speculated where cokeworth is located in the england map or what it's equivalence would be. i've seen people speculate it's probably up north perhaps. maybe snape's a northerner.

however.

it's been stated multiple times that cokeworth is in the midlands. so we're thinking northampton, shropshire, stoke, birmingham.

but i prefer to think it's in the black country. mainly for these reasons:

1. cokeworth is an industrial town, even if spinner's end seems mainly abandoned, and the black country was the birth of the industrial revolution.

2. the black country was known for steelworks, glassworks and cokeworks which is maybe where the town got its title from.

3. the black country suffered from high unemployment due to the closing down of a lot of industrial sites in the 60s and 70s which ties into the idea of spinner's end being practically desolate now, and also the strain on the snape's household's economic position.

4. petunia met vernon dursley and marries him. his job was being the director of a firm that made drills. which are made of steel. steelworks anyone?

5. which leads to my last and favourite theory; petunia marrying vernon who perhaps also came from the black country then decided to name their child after something close to home. a nearby town perhaps - dudley.

one thing i think is generally overlooked about tommy is that he's more of an improvisor than people give him credit for; in fact he's more of an improvisor than he is a meticulous planner. he's more often responding to circumstances out of his control than he is setting up the circumstances from the beginning. it's not that he doesn't have initial plans, it's that he's very quickly adaptable.

this makes sense if you think a bit about what it might have been like for him in the war; when you think about why all the men who served with and then under him (including his brothers, in cluding his older brother) have the level of trust and loyalty they have in him as a leader -- if i remember correctly part of what went wrong in the war was leadership unable to deal with and adapt to reality on the ground, and if Tommy and his brothers and friends survived, it was most likely not due to his intricately planned strategies but his ability to improvise in the moment.

and it's also not like his improvised, adapted plans aren't strategic and intricately thought out. it's just that he's ready to adapt at a turn of a dime. shit goes wrong and you have to change direction, or incorporate new realities, or you die.

tommy's plans basically *never* go off the way they're supposed to, because he's constantly having to adjust. and it doesn't always go smoothly for him either.

hey there! She is a Grace hater. Worst thing about this account is they hide under the disguise that they are neutral and do not engage in ship wars. But she is just a pretentious person who is very much engaged in fueling the shipping war with her biased and one sided meta, analysis posts. She hates Grace and uses every opportunity to hate and attack the character and the fans. Not really bothered with what she has to say. I think the saddest part of michaels storyline in season 3 is how little it matters to anyone else. Michael tells Tommy he was molested and Tommy brushes him off and tells him to kill his former abuser. No affection given, no brotherly love. Even after the unfailing loyalty and devotion that he’s shown Tommy since they’ve met. It is never discussed again. Michaels mother never broaches the subject, and Hughes himself doesn’t even RECOGNIZE Michael as an adult. All this pain he’s been carrying, this intense drive to attain power and protection so he won’t be a victim ever again, and no one gives a shit. His tragedy is a footnote in everyone else’s story, even the story of his abuser. Poor forgotten boy with no name, no home, no family, disregarded by everyone he loves, even the narrative itself views him only with apathy.

Oh man. I mean, it’s Desire! So I feel like they would be particularly strong with Physical Touch and Receiving gifts. Right?? Those seem the most connected to their function to me. If they did an Acts of Service, I suspect it would just be in bed and that defaults to Physical Touch. 😆 (or maybe not? 😳 either way…)

So yeah, I totally picture them seducing Unity by having an “uncanny knack” for knowing just what kind of gift she wanted in a particular moment. Maybe being a bit forward with their advances (holding hands in public unchaperoned…that sort of thing). And then doing things in the marital bed that would make Calliope blush. (Because of course Unity would insist they get married: she’s the one to hold Desire to account on all fronts.)

I picture Unity existing in her dreamworld with a bit of a static understanding of etiquette and social relationship norms as they existed when she fell asleep in 1916. Unless Desire was able to help influence her understanding of current social events. Perhaps the remaining dreams and nightmares were already doing that for her before Desire entered in on the scene. (So as much as I picture them dating in the 1920s cabaret scene and all the art deco outfits that would entail, it might not fit? I’m going to make it fit.) It certainly would give a bit more consent to the situation than could otherwise be implied. I love them as a pair, and it really only works if Unity is able to grow up naturally in her dream world.

So yeah, Unity’s love languages might be Quality Time and Acts of Service to fall along the 1916 social norms for relationships. I see her doing things like finding excuses to spend time with Desire and then help them. Utterly domestic fluff once they’re married.

But man, can we just pause a moment to think about how awesome a courtship set amid the 1920s Berlin cabaret scene could be? Maybe I do headcanon Desire influencing Unity’s perception of time and culture to allow her to grow up a bit. I mostly just want the decadence of fashion and music out of this scene. I want them dancing to 1920s jazz and switching off who leads whom. I want glitz and glamour and finger waves and Art Deco embellishments on their clothes and jewelry. I like the idea of Desire being the gender-fluid icon of the time they would be, and Unity being a bit of Desire’s slightly more traditionally feminine arm candy who gets to wear stunning flapper gowns and gorgeous headpieces. Coupe glasses for all of the cute cocktails.

I'm BIG here for Tommy Shelby content, so I was like "O hai gimme" looool. Also, seeing all your Peaky Blinders / Tommy stuff had me thinking about him vs. Astarion, particularly, of course, A!Astarion, and interesting thoughts about possible intersections of these two super compelling, at best morally grey characters. Their journeys are so different, and I think their alignments / dispositions are, too. At the same time, though, I think they have a lot of the same goals -- and I think, at least, the version of Astarion I'm writing about in an echo, a stain hardly resembles Tommy at all on the surface, but is very much motivated by a lot of the same things, and those journeys have interesting parallels, particularly as they appear in later seasons of Peaky Blinders. I know it’s been almost a fucking decade but it Grace’s writing post season one feels like a very passive aggressive narrative punishment.

Like here’s Grace at the end of season one, she’s fucked over Tommy and Campbell in different ways while having a fairly major impact on the plot but manages to get away scot free in universe, save for Campbell pointing a gun at her. And then in season two she’s been turned into this unhappy housewife whose role in the narrative is so passive that she only displays any kind of agency when she chooses to cheat on her husband with Tommy.

And then in season three the trend continues with her being Tommy’s housewife who doesn’t get involved with the illegal side of things and just manages the charitable organisation.

Even in the scene of her death, she doesn’t display any sort of agency. She gets shot because Tommy fucking grabbed her and tried to pull her away. This woman, who just five years earlier reacted to someone she knew pulling a gun on her was to shoot, doesn’t even get to move freely in the moment before her death.

Then with her actual death, it’s so passive that the only movement is her bringing her hand to rest on Tommy’s arm. That’s it, nothing else before she’s nothing more than a corpse on the floor to rocked back and forth and fawned over by her husband.

The blocking is reminiscent of the portrait Ophelia, but it’s mocking, Ophelia’s death was a suicide, an attempt to claim power over her life after the outside forces have left it in tatters. Grace’s death is murder, entirely at the hands of others and not even about her, it was meant for Tommy, her corpse is obscured, overshadowed by Tommy. Her death isn’t even allowed to be about her.

It’s like SK felt like Grace had to have less influence after season one to make up for the fact she “beat” Tommy and got away with it so he over corrected and made her into just a prop to be moved around by Tommy or for Tommy’s convenience instead of an actual character
