For the ask game 💝 for Desire.... With a cheeky little Desunity wink attached. 😅♥️
Oh man. I mean, it’s Desire! So I feel like they would be particularly strong with Physical Touch and Receiving gifts. Right?? Those seem the most connected to their function to me. If they did an Acts of Service, I suspect it would just be in bed and that defaults to Physical Touch. 😆 (or maybe not? 😳 either way…)
So yeah, I totally picture them seducing Unity by having an “uncanny knack” for knowing just what kind of gift she wanted in a particular moment. Maybe being a bit forward with their advances (holding hands in public unchaperoned…that sort of thing). And then doing things in the marital bed that would make Calliope blush. (Because of course Unity would insist they get married: she’s the one to hold Desire to account on all fronts.)
I picture Unity existing in her dreamworld with a bit of a static understanding of etiquette and social relationship norms as they existed when she fell asleep in 1916. Unless Desire was able to help influence her understanding of current social events. Perhaps the remaining dreams and nightmares were already doing that for her before Desire entered in on the scene. (So as much as I picture them dating in the 1920s cabaret scene and all the art deco outfits that would entail, it might not fit? I’m going to make it fit.) It certainly would give a bit more consent to the situation than could otherwise be implied. I love them as a pair, and it really only works if Unity is able to grow up naturally in her dream world.
So yeah, Unity’s love languages might be Quality Time and Acts of Service to fall along the 1916 social norms for relationships. I see her doing things like finding excuses to spend time with Desire and then help them. Utterly domestic fluff once they’re married.
But man, can we just pause a moment to think about how awesome a courtship set amid the 1920s Berlin cabaret scene could be? Maybe I do headcanon Desire influencing Unity’s perception of time and culture to allow her to grow up a bit. I mostly just want the decadence of fashion and music out of this scene. I want them dancing to 1920s jazz and switching off who leads whom. I want glitz and glamour and finger waves and Art Deco embellishments on their clothes and jewelry. I like the idea of Desire being the gender-fluid icon of the time they would be, and Unity being a bit of Desire’s slightly more traditionally feminine arm candy who gets to wear stunning flapper gowns and gorgeous headpieces. Coupe glasses for all of the cute cocktails.
Basically Unity needs to wear something like this:

And Desire gets to pull off this (but wear it even better):

4: What is your least favorite era for historical costume?
Gotta be 1860s American womenswear. Some of this is oversaturation -- American Civil War reenacting and all of that -- but it's just less interesting than Romantic Era/early-Victorian/...I guess, Jacksonian-era in the US? fashion for me and without the weirdness of what comes next. I should really give this era its due and look for what's appealing and unusual in it, but it can feel like tired territory.
11: Who's your favorite stylish character?
I love Lotte's costuming in Babylon Berlin, where we definitely see all the work that goes into looking fashionable and modern with very few resources available to her, and I love Cameron Howe's scruffy, bra-free, minimalistic personal style in Halt And Catch Fire. From the first moment we see her shoplifting tee shirts from the boys' section at a department store, I knew she would be my forever wife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21: What's your favorite screen makeover or transformation scene?
More of a make-under, but I love when we see Archie's wig come off in Rob Roy. Yes yes it's saying something about him shedding the collectively pretended veneer of social class and English culture and gentlemanly refinement to reveal the brutal miserable bastard that's always been underneath that veneer, but also it's very sexy. It's like seeing a guy in shirtsleeves or that fanfiction moment of glimpsing the little stripe of skin revealed underneath Blorbo's tee shirt when he raises his arms -- strategic exposure. Underboob of the hair.

🥦🌻 and 📺 for the ask game ☺️
Hellu! Tusen takk for the ask! :D
🥦Favorite Veggie: Hm... I think...maybe, Parsnip, carrot and broccoli? I like tomatoes aswell but they are technically not a vegetable but a fruit ;)
🌻Favorite flower: I'm a little old fashioned so I love deep red roses but I also like more or less any purple flowers like pansies (named "Stephmother flower/stemorsblomst" in Norwegian), purple petunias and even purple roses! BUT as I worked at a garden center/huge florist shop center last year.. I also got to know (and fall in love with) this funky MESS of a plant:
JUNCUS SPIRALUS! <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is so messy, so chatoic and the actual stems were so soft to the touch and had a special texture that I really liked to caress! I had to buy one of these chaotic babies from the shop I worked at but my dad accidentally killed while trying to give it some fluid plant nutrition...(without my permission...) It couldn't handle this liquid and so it died :( I actually miss it! I do want to have it again! <3
As for the last question I am just gonna sum up some of my
📺 Favorite TV Shows: (The ones I remember and in no particular order because I am unmedicated and a mess today so here we go)
"BABYLON BERLIN" my beloved <3 (But I have to admit that the latest season was kind of a mess and not that entertaining..)
"The Man In The High Castle" (except for the last season...we do NOT talk about the last season! - . -)
"What We Do In The Shadows" (although again...the latest season that I saw..season 4 I think? Wasn't as good as the rest, but I need to watch season 5!!)
"VIKINGS" (duh-uh...how could you tell? :P At least right up until season 4 and then I always forgot to watch the rest...It was so good and then it tried to be wannabe Game of Thrones and that's when I lost interest.. :/ I guess I'm gonna try to watch it again sometime..I just hope the rest of the season isn't going to be like Game of Thrones as what I liked about Vikings was that it was good WITHOUT any nudity and sex scenes..at least from what I know right up until season 4. )
"FRIENDS" (even though I only watch the re-runs on TV, it was the first series that I ever loved that wasn't a cartoon!)
"Murdoch Mysteries" (but they never air it in Norway anymore and I don't want to have subscriptions on more platforms just for ONE TV-show. Damn. I miss it though!)
Currently I am watching "From" at Netflix and it's really good so far! I have high hopes! :)
"100 Code" but they stopped after one season and then one of the main actors died...R.I.P Michael Nyqvist :( It was SO GOOD and I HATE how the last episode was THE BIGGEST CLIFFHANGER and then we never get to know how it would end.. :/
"Hazbin Hotel" (I guess..even though the actual series wasn't as good as the Pilot)
"Vampire High" even though it was cheesy and even though it was killed off after one season and again it left the audience with a cliffhanger...
Tusen takk again for this ask! <3

ASK EDDIE - July 20 2023
In case you missed Thursday’s Facebook stream of ASK EDDIE.
FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss “Pier 23” and its connection to the radio program “Pat Novack for Hire”, staircases in noir, “Quiet Please, Murder”, “Desire Me”, “Stolen Face”, familial noir, the noir credentials of “Sin City”, and more. Eddie weighs in on what the last film noir of the classic era was and the first neo-noir. Plus, we discuss the newly coined phrase homme stupide. We wind up the show with a discussion of teen noir. On the cat front, Charlotte does not appreciate the question about the cutest cat in film noir. Want your question answered in a future episode? We solicit questions from our email subscribers in our monthly newsletters. Sign up here. Everyone who signs up on our email list and contributes $20 or more to the Film Noir Foundation receives the digital version of NOIR CITY Magazine for a year. Donate here.
This week’s questions:
1. Was the Stanford Theater ever considered to host a NOIR CITY Film Festival? What film ranks in your mind as the most important yet to be restored? —Richard
2. My wife Linda enjoys watching film noir. She particularly gets a kick out of the sap who makes poor judgments after succumbing to the “charms” of a femme fatale. She calls such a dope an homme stupide. She was wondering if you have encountered this anywhere else or if she has coined a new noir phrase. —Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
3. I recently watched a 58-minute, B noir programmer titled PIER 23, featuring Hugh Beaumont as Dennis O’Brien. I also saw ROARING CITY another under-an-hour picture with two more cases. Spartan Productions also released a third Beaumont/O’Brien flick, DANGER ZONE - with the same format, all based on stories apparently recycled from old scripts for the radio program PAT NOVACK FOR HIRE. Have either of you seen any of the films or listened to the old Pat Novack program? —Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
4. Do you have any comments or opinions on QUIET PLEASE, MURDER?  —Liz
5. Any thoughts on DESIRE ME? —Dennis James from Champlain, NY
6. I don't remember either of you mentioning STOLEN FACE which I think of as a precursor to VERTIGO. Thoughts? —Joe from Suffolk County
7. Don't you think the kitten in THIS GUN FOR HIRE is the cutest cat in film noir? I thought I read that Hitler invited about Veronica Lake and two other beautiful Hollywood starlets to visit his castle in the 1930s and that they went. Have you ever heard of anything like this?—Arlene
8. Is it accurate to claim that the multi-story staircase shot we see so often in Noir is an example of German Expressionism? —Bob, Woodland, CA
9. Have you heard of the Netflix series BABYLON BERLIN? If so, what are your thoughts on it? —Adam from Indiana
10.  I consider Frank Miller's SIN CITY and SIN CITY A DAME TO DIE FOR Noir's on steroids.  Your opinion, please. —Chris
11. My question concerns one of my favorite films, 1978's FINGERS. Can you think of any other examples of "familial noir," where characters' lives are dictated by their parents or siblings or ancestors? —Kevin, Salt Lake City, UT
12. Do you consider, as some people do, that Welles’ brilliant TOUCH OF EVIL is the last noir film of the classic era? And what do you consider the first “neo noir”?—Bill Stewart of Winnipeg, Manitoba
13. With the 2021 NIGHTMARE ALLEY and now MARLOWE, I wonder if the current picture business is starting to find interest in reviving old noirs. To me, it seems that to cater to a modern, jaded audience, directors have been making these noirs quite violent. There's considerably less censoring -- and more technology -- in filmmaking, but do you envision any noirs being brought back today in a non-R-rated fashion, or would noir have been a more violent genre in the 40's if the production code and technology allowed for that? —Neil
14. I have a question about a small but important detail re: two of my absolute favorite remarks in Film Noir. They are both spoken in the crackling dialogue in OUT OF THE PAST.  I have always attributed these great lines to the fine screenwriter, Daniel Mainwaring, who wrote the book and screenplay for this movie. But some time ago, Eddie, I thought I heard you mention that another screenwriter came up with these ‘gems’.   If you have the answer, please let me know.  —Craig from Carlsbad
15. As I understand, OUT OF THE PAST was released in the UK under its original title: BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH. I was curious if either of you have ever seen a UK print with that title and if there were any other differences in the UK prints? —Dennis, Champlain, NY.
16. In a recent episode, Eddie said that he hates teenagers and hated being one.

Charlotte von Moos (ed.): Miami In The 1980s
Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, Köln, 2022
Tumblr media
First things first: that book is cool. The graphic design, in mint green and dusty pink is clearly an homage to its subject – the architecture from postmodern Miami. But not only it respects on glossy paper the colour code of an era and style, it’s full of new drawings (plans and façades) that allow us to understand buildings we knew as images in depth and to consider their architectural qualities. As it must be the book starts with screenshots from the main title of the TV-Series Miami Vice (1984-89) that reminds us that – for the first time in history – architecture had become a real protagonist in storytelling. Remember: two undercover cops dressed in Hugo Boss suits hang around Miami driving a white Ferrari Testarossa, they pretend to be drug dealers to catch the bad guys enjoying the sun of Florida. This criminal society meets and lives in houses that fit their lifestyle and the neo-modern villas from Arquitectonica are not only the decor of their life – they tell us about the taste, the habits and the dangers from those people. Michael Mann was the creator and executive producer from that series and if you’ve seen any other of his films you’ll know one thing: he loves the visual power of architecture and understands the role it can play in storytelling (so was Alfred Hitchcock ‘s review).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many of us know the images from Miami Vice and if, like me, you were born in the early 1970s and watched too much TV – you looked at them as an adolescent and became an architect because of them. I did. But the genius of the book is to reveal us the context, the ideas and concepts that were around at that time and who brought a generation of architects to the invention of a very unique and local style. For sure, as post-moderns, they wanted to play with history, to mix Adolf Loos or Le Corbusier with ornamented porticos à la Aldo Rossi (the buildings of Duany Plater-Zyberk are a perfect example from this approach). But one should not forget that the iconic Spear House (1976-78) was the child of a project developed by Laurinda Spear and Remment (not yet) Rem Koolhaas in 1974, at the peak of his obsessions with Surrealism, Constructivism and the Berlin Wall. Last but not least, they all understood the power of colour and refused the dogmatic boredom of white plaster. The essay from Charlotte von Moos unfolds all those references, brings unknown archives to life and fascinates with its enthusiasm. The whole book makes it clear: those buildings were not just a set for TV-series but true architecture with its successes and mistakes.
Tumblr media
The in-depth essay is followed by short introductions with archival or new photographs (and drawings) of 19 projects made my S.O.M, Philip Johnson & John Burgee, Mateu Architecture, Duany Plater-Zyberk, Isamu Noguchi and – of course – Arquitectonica. It’s like eating a pistachio, raspberry, mint and vanilla ice cream: you know you shouldn’t like it and that it’s gonna make you sick, but you cannot stop. Still, and that’s probably the goal of the book: many of those buildings are now in danger – the taste of the inhabitants has changed, downtown Miami craves for densification and the constructions are too young to become historical monuments (think about the IBA87 in Berlin). A whole visual chapter is allocated to the demolition of The Babylon (1981) by Arquitectonica, and alerts us that it might be our last chance to visit those buildings believing we are undercover cops driving a white Ferrari.
Now comes a spoiler, like in movies, but I’m gonna tell you how the book ends (so stop reading here if you don’t want to know)… The final spreads are dedicated to fashion shoots that were done in the Spear House for GQ or Vogue. The legs of a lady in a bikini enjoy the swimming pool, a young man in pyjama stares into our eyes, other people sunbath on the terrace or jump into the water. They pose with their perfectly clean clothes and rather impossible haircuts (too much hairspray involved, much too much – but that’s the 1980s). What becomes clear, looking at those images, is that architecture – here, is more than a decor. It’s a part of a lifestyle that includes nice cars, expensive watches and shiny garments, making the American dream a kitsch and unattainable Gesamtkunstwerk. A total work of art.
- Thibaut de Ruyter

𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Name: Mary Maud Lombard (nee Harkin)
Title(s): N/A
Referred to as: Mrs Lombard; "Dora" by her husband
Nickname(s): N/A
Age: 33 (29 January 1890)
Gender: Cisgender female
Sexual orientation: Bisexual
Occupation: Socialite (current); housemaid (former)
Nationality: Irish
Religion: Protestant
Class: Middle (current); working (former)
Place of birth: Belfast, Ireland
Hometown: As above
Faceclaim: Liv Lisa Fries (Babylon Berlin)
𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Height: 5'6 (167 cm)
Weight: Underweight and bony for it
Build: Built like a bird (or a child, depending on how charitable your perspective), Maud has the figure for this new fashion obsession with the androgyne
Distinguishing marks: N/A
Hair colour:  Plain old brown
Hair style: Frizzy in the vein of Zelda Fitzgerald, brushed into a chin-length halo of half-formed curls. It is not a flattering style, but Maud has tried everything to no avail. She normally wears a hat or scarf of some kind just to keep it quite literally under wraps
Eye colour: Dark blue, though not remarkable in any way
Clothing: One would think that as a new member of the nouveau riche Maud would been spendthrift, but the opposite is true. She dresses in nice but plain clothes, and favours whites and creams regardless of the season or whether it's appropriate. Her favourite colour is burnt orange and so she uses that as an accent wherever possible. She often wears hats or scarves to tame her ridiculous mane of curls. As she never had her ears pierced, Maud doesn't wear much jewellery except for the choice pieces Felix bought her.
Scent(s): Face powder, cigarette smoke, burnt coffee, a sugary perfume bought in Paris that reminds one of treacle tart
Accent: The swift singsong accent of Belfast. She often sounds indignant even when she's not, and the pitch at the end of her sentences rises to turn any observation into a challenge.
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Summary No one could say that Maud was easy. She isn't easy to love, get along with, or even understand. While she's certainly dramatic and outspoken on various injustices, she shrouds her true self beneath different layers of her character. The only person who has ever seen and loved the whole of her is her husband, who is the singularly most important and yet dangerous person in her life. Maud was taught never to put one's happiness in anyone's hands but God's - well, she must be a fool at heart, because Maud feels as if she leaves fragments of herself wherever she goes. She clings to shards of her identity, guarding them jealously as jewels, because if given the chance she would be left with nothing. Maud wants safety. She wants to be understood. Mostly, she wants freedom: to do as she pleases, to go where she likes, and to never be beholden to anybody. This fierce pursuit of independence can make her loved ones feel, at times, as they are simply there for the ride, there to facilitate her meteoric ascension in life. But Maud doesn't know how to live quietly. She wants to consume. All her life she has been hungry.
Virtues: Pragmatic, friendly, outspoken, charismatic, individualistic, independent
Vices: Selfish, childish, hot-headed, dramatic, short-sighted, vengeful
Moral alignment: Chaotic Good
Natal chart: Aquarius (Sun), Scorpio (Rising), Cancer (Moon)
Habits: Rolling her own cigarettes, sun-bathing, drinking bourbon, driving fast sports-cars, putting on accents as she reads out interviews with actresses in her women's magazines
Character tropes: Fiona Gallagher (Shameless)
