'When renowned screenwriter Steven Knight set about formulating what would become one of his best creations, the modern gangster classic television series Peaky Blinders, he had a very important choice to make. He already had his main character fully fleshed out: Thomas Shelby, an ambitious, emotionally shut off war veteran who conducts himself like he's already dead and living on borrowed time. Knight was deliberating between two very different actors when deciding who best had the skills to embody Shelby. One of these men was an icon of the Irish acting scene, able to be in almost any kind of film you can imagine. The other was an icon of the rough and tumble action film scene, equally capable of fighting off sharks and jump-kicking down doors. It was the matchup nobody could have foreseen, Cillian Murphy vs. Jason Statham.

A Text to Steven Knight Gave Cillian Murphy the Upper Hand Over Jason Statham

Knight has told the story that he was torn between going with either of these two masters of the brood and the grumbling voice. According to The Independent, he said that he "met them both in LA to talk about the role and opted for Jason...because physically in the room Jason is Jason." You have to imagine that what he means by this is that Statham is a very impressive physical specimen in person, and that his tough guy persona is not entirely an act. Knight followed up by mentioning how Murphy "isn't Tommy, obviously, but I was stupid enough not to understand that." In his defense, Murphy is an incredibly soft-spoken and gentle soul, leagues away from the calculating killer Knight was looking for.

Seemingly sensing a disturbance in the Force, Murphy decided to pull a true giga-Chad move to ensure he'd get the role. Knight said that one day he received a text from Murphy, and what did that text say? "Remember, I'm an actor." At that moment, Knight realized that Murphy "can transform himself. If you meet him in the street, he is a totally different human being." Knight was finally able to see past Murphy's introverted exterior and realize he had what it took to live up to the Peaky Blinders standard.

Jason Statham Is Best as a Likable Action Star

This is no shade whatsoever to Statham — who has his own certain set of skills he brings to the table — but he could not bring to Thomas Shelby what Murphy did. While it's true that Thomas is a ruthless man who's killed before and has it in him to kill again, he is above all else a politician at heart. He is strategic in his methods, completely closed off in his emotionality even to his own most beloved family members, and ruthless in who or what he will use as collateral in order to get what he wants. If ever there was a modern anti-hero of deeply questionable morality to rival the likes of Tony Soprano or Walter White, it's Thomas Shelby.

While Jason has played his fair share of guys who aren't afraid to kill people or do continuously insane things just to stay alive, he is almost always portrayed in a totally positive manner. He is the modern day equivalent of a Charles Bronson or a Steve McQueen, the likable gruff hero who is always up against meaner, more overtly evil enemies. Don't get it twisted — he's great in these roles, as his combination of street knowledge and his comfort with quips make him the rare action star that feels equally at home in both types of flicks. He can be both the hardened badass in Parker or Wrath of Man, but also be a more humorous and slapstick version of his persona in films like Spy or The Expendables.

There are two downsides to the image he's maintained. For one, there's a noted pressure for action stars to continue to do roles that keep their core fanbase happy. People like Jason Statham because they want to see him do Jason Statham-type roles, and taking a chance on a more outside-the-box character like Thomas could be seen as a risk for his career. Second, there's always an underpinning of likability to his characters — almost to a fault. No matter what he does, we always feel like the movie is approving of his actions, with rare exceptions. Even his most prominent villain role, Deckard Shaw in the Fast and Furious saga, had to become a full-fledged good guy at some point because audiences loved seeing him on-screen and interacting with the main cast so much. Audiences feel compelled to be on his side, regardless of the consequences.

Cillian Murphy Can Better Embrace the Small Scale

As Murphy himself professed, he is "an actor," which is an understatement if ever there was one. Cillian Murphy has steadily built a reputation for himself as one of the consummate actors of our time, slipping from super villain, to Irish freedom fighter, to space captain with an impeccable ease. Plus, despite Knight's hesitations over picturing Murphy as such a tough threat like Thomas, Murphy has actually had a great history of playing men of imposing force. Think of his terrorist Jackson Rippner holding Rachel McAdams hostage and surviving getting stabbed in the throat with a pen in Red Eye, or the steadily increasing violence and chaotic behavior of one of his earliest roles in Disco Pigs, or even the coke snorting, gun toting, walking red flag that is Tom in The Party. These may not be muscular bruiser types that can knock heads together with ease like Statham can in his sleep, but they are men who are all full of murderous drive, and know how to keep themselves composed and proper in various social circles, while also projecting a sense of constant calculation and the ability to hide true emotions from everyone in the room except the audience.

To make a long story short, Murphy can carry a scene in a smaller scale register than Statham can. If we see Murphy sit like a stone for an entire scene watching everyone else, we read this as him gathering knowledge, playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. If Statham does the same, we expect him to find the right time to interrogate someone or get what he wants through sheer fisticuffs, or perhaps even find a way to witty banter his way out of the situation. While Statham can be a quite stern actor himself, his is more a barreling full force kind of focus, like a determined dog chasing a car. The ambiguous and slippery nature of Murphy's temperament is much more fitting for the kind of expert power player that Thomas Shelby winds up being.

Thomas Shelby’s Casting Came Down to a Matter of Fit Above All Else

None of this is to cast any aspersions on Statham's abilities as an actor, but instead to highlight that he simply wasn't as good of a fit as Murphy. Statham bringing a lot of charisma and physical threat to a starring role is great for a slice of pulpy fun like Safe, but not as fitting for a multi season character study of a broken man manipulating the world around him to do what he thinks is right, even if that means potentially turning against his own trusted allies. That kind of moral confusion and ping ponging of conflicting motivations and actions is much more suited to an actor like Murphy, as there's simultaneously no audience pressure on him to fulfill the role of a standard likable hero and more freedom for him and the writers to explore the darker potential of the character in a way that feels honest to the material. It's important to keep in mind that ultimately, it's not a matter of getting the biggest actor for the role, but the right actor. Cillian Murphy was the right man for the job, by order of the Peaky f***ing Blinders.'

I looked up at an mbti compatibility chart (this one), and Thomas is described as either an INTJ or an ENTJ which seemed like a good match! Here are a few scenarios that I thought of, which also underline the reasons why I chose him for the match-up:

even though the both of you are quite stubborn, you would always find a common ground and avoid any useless quarrels

the fact that you put family in your top priorities is a big yes for Thomas, as he always wanted to find a woman whose thoughts are fixated on something practical and not some useless hokum

your anxious character would help Thomas understand how important emotional support is; that is, because as soon as the two of you got together you became much calmer

the two of you would often talk for hours on end, about your lives of about what you did during the day

as you’re kinda sarcastic and goofy, you would try to cheer Thomas up when you notice that something’s wrong, and he would always smile and thank you for worrying about him

when you’re relaxing at home, you would listen to crime podcasts and Thomas would join in and hear you commenting the cases; as time goes by, he would become a fan of those podcasts as well

last but not least, the love you share for animals is one of the key points of your talks, as Thomas would tell you everything he knows about horses (he would also teach you how to ride one) and you would share your knowledge about dogs

If it's okay I'd ask for a matchup with a male character from Peaky Blinders! So I'm a girl and I'm 1,70 m tall, I'm slim (andflatcofcof) and my hair is half dark blond and half bleached. I like to think I'm a really outgoing person (even if I have anxiety lol) and I really like to make people happy and laugh. I'm kind (I hope) and I try to avoid stupid conflicts, but if it's about something that's dear to me I'll go off. I'm definitely a chaotic neutral, like the goose from that game. I love joking around. I love animals and nature and I'm studying to become a marine vet/biologist. I love both cats and dogs but I'm more of a cat person because I'm kinnnnda lazy lol. At the same time I love going into the nature and into adventures! I love everything that gives me adrenaline! I use sarcasm a lot, but not in a mean way, I hate to offend people. You grew up across from the Shelby's your whole life. Everyone knew them growing up, even before they gained any power. Their home was loud, chaotic, full of so many kids. They were always out on the streets before the sun rose, and welcomed back in only after it set. You never gave them any thought. It was normal to peer out your bedroom window only to see Arthur and Tommy running off, John and Ada following behind as fast as their small legs could carry them. Whoever they could find to play with they did, and when there was no one, there was enough of them anyways. You grew up, you and Tommy, and though your walks home were similar and you shared classes, you'd only ever spoken once or twice. It wasn't until after Finn had been born, after the war, after what felt like a lifetime had passed before you ever exchanged anything meaningful. Your parents left, wanting out of Birmingham, leaving the house to you. It was there you let friends stay over, where you studied, bidding your time to move to the countryside, somewhere far away and peaceful.

Tommy had always taken notice of you, of your perfect smile, but it seemed, for many years, you wanted nothing to do with him or anyone like him. Thats was okay. A lot had changed in him, in his life. He liked that, no matter what happened, he could always count on you being there. Maybe you never noticed his careful eyes, maybe you didn't care, but he watched as you took in stray after stray, nursing them back to health or simply giving them a place to stay. He watched as you laughed with friends and read in the window, studying too hard for your own good. He took notice of everything. It wasn't hard to see you had a kind heart, especially towards animals. One day he notices a furry creature following him down the street. Everyone else avoids him, turning away, but this tiny cat knows no difference. It's obviously sick, and so small, and he doesn't want to leave it outside, but he has no idea how to care for it. He hopes it isn't too odd, showing up late at your doorstep, asking for help. At first you don't know what to think. What would Thomas Shelby want with you? Then, like a child, he stampers through his explanation, showing off the kitten he's cradled in his arms. You can't help but smile, inviting them both in. You show him how to hold it, offering it food you know it won't be able to resist. He isn't sure what to say, or how to thank you, not accustomed to going to others for help. You just laugh, assuring him its no problem.

After that, he can't help but think about you. It seems like anytime he's out, so are you, giving him an opportunity to thank you again. You jokingly say he can thank you by taking you to dinner. Tommy takes it seriously though. Maybe it was your kindness towards him, or towards the cat, or both, but he can't get you out of his head. It doesn't help your jokes make him laugh or when he sees you lecturing a bunch of kids, a bunch of kids much like his own family, chasing a dog around, he can't help but have respect for you. Personality (good and bad traits): Ever since I was a kid, I was always quite mature for my age – I identify myself as an old soul. I come off as polite and well-mannered to strangers, yet I tend to keep it to myself by being reserved. But, that’s because I have social anxiety and I’m nervous and shy when meeting/talking to people. The only people I’m comfortable with are with my inner circle – closest friends and family. I am usually more “open” with my friends than with my family. With my friends I can be my “truest-self” – I smile more, I laugh more, I feel more accepted and understood. I am the mom and the fashionista of the group. Don’t get me wrong, I am fiercely protective of my family, especially of my mother and younger sister. But, lately, I’ve been feeling like the “black sheep” of the family, Cinderella who’s been taken advantage of. I express my affection for the people I care about in little, but practical, ways. I can be a little stiff when it comes to open, gushy displays of affection. Others turn to me for help and advice. I’m kind-hearted and generous, always ready to help a person in need. Always have been motherly towards children. Very awkward at keeping small talk (usually with people that I’m not that close with). Absolutely, hate speaking in front of a public, and if I do, because of my nervousness, I tend to mess up my words and/or I practice whatever I’m about to say in my head at first. I appreciate the simplicity and am often most comfortable when I’m not getting too much attention from the world. I am sensitive – both to criticism and to others’ feelings (I sponge up the feelings and moods of people and the environment around me). Have a hard time saying no or expressing my true thoughts, feelings. I get influenced by other people’s opinions/thoughts quite hard (I take everything to the heart), that is why I tend to keep a lot to myself (may come off as a little bit tense, secretive, mysterious). I avoid the harsh reality by daydreaming (almost every day) – imagining myself in situations far from my current circumstances. Sort of like a self-escape. I worry a lot and overthink almost everything. I am easily distracted and my attention span can be quite short. I have an internal struggle between my needs and wants. I can lack focus and be indecisive as a result – when I decide on one route, I am pulled in another direction at the same time (“But what if…”, “on the other hand...”). That is why I’m having a bit of a struggle with deciding what I want to do in the future (career-wise). I am easily overwhelmed by pressure and stress. There is a self-destructive side to me (self-critical, lack of self-confidence) that I’m working on by confronting my fears (coming out of my shell). Don’t like taking pictures, or other people taking pictures of me. I feel most content when I’ve straightened out all the details of everyday life. I have a routine, that I follow by mostly every day, and if something small changes in that routine, I start to have a small internal anxiety attack. Also, I like to do things my own way, like, when it comes to cleaning the house or organizing stuff, etc. I get triggered even if people don’t do the laundry the way I do. I guess you could describe me as a perfectionist, clean/control freak. In triggering situations I can be impulsive, spontaneous, quick to act. Quick flare-ups of anger/annoyance when being provoked on my patience. Even when I’m feeling low, I manage to find humor in life and have fun with whatever I do have. Although I tend to bottle things up, I am an emotional person and my emotions are genuine – I love and care deeply and wish no ill will upon anyone, yet it’s hard for me to imagine someone falling in love with me or just liking me.

Hobbies, likes: My hobbies are cleaning, writing (re-writing song lyrics, making small notes, writing stories), listening to any type of music, catching up on my favorite films and TV shows, hanging out with friends, going to the cinema, or the club, being out in nature, reading, traveling. I like history, cooking, fashion magazines (or fashion in general), road trips, spirituality, mythology, books, orange juice, previous decades, cottage-core, dark academia.
