A drama rec list (with some special mentions for beginner learners*):
Guardian (my favorite, if you like Torchwood or Xmen this will be your kinda thing, search for it as it's on bilibili right now instead of youtube, language is case fic/supernatural geared, which I found useful later, also i just love this show to pieces)
Detective L (good for learners, a very Sherlock style setup and cases are relatively simple, fairly straightforward language for case shows)
My Roommate is a Detective/Checkmate (if you liked Detective L, this is another sherlock like case setup, with somewhat more complex plot but fairly genre specific words so if you tend to watch/read this stuff you'll adjust well)
History 3 Trapped (gay, cop/mafia, also technically about solving a murder case so the combo of case genre words and slice of life romance make this approachable and fun if you like action in your romance)
Bromance (Baron Chen stars, gender fun, also slice of life romance meets mafia boss with kickass civilian getting involved with mafia boss trying to turn his company legit Baron Chen, mostly slice of life language which makes it an easier watch but also some fun action fights for people like me who like that)
Love is More Than A Word/Till Death Tear Us Apart (two connected dramas, find them on dramacool or elsewhere uncensored. Good for learners who like explicit queer marriage in their period dramas, republican era spy/business boss enemies to lovers With Happy ending in their dramas, and these shows are hard dual subtitled which is nice for learners I think, a fairly basic short plot in both shows which makes the period historical of limtaw and republican era tdtua genre words easier to figure out)
Granting You A Dreamlike Life (a hot mess of a show, GREAT for learners I learned to watch Chinese shows just steamrolling through 15 episodes of this with only chinese subs. Features zhu yilong, a lot of romance cute and angst galore, some gangster action to appease people like me ToT, and a just ridiculous soap opera style plot to keep you going. Also it's particular story style makes it easy enough to follow even if you're mainly relying on actions and visuals. It's not 'good' let's say, but if you do happen to like it, it's a great easier drama to learn from)
The Lost Tomb (the yang yang one. Very short, great intro cdrama. It's got the cheapest cgi/visuals of all daomubiji dramas so if you can handle this then quality only goes up by gratuitous proportions until you get to Tomb of The Sea, Reboot, and Ultimate Note which look movie level budget. It's fairly straightforward Indiana jones/the mummy/typical Tomb raider story plot, some easy genre related words could get picked up here, also often available with dual subtitles)
Love and Redemption (I know, you're wondering why I put this beautiful 59 episode show I adore on the learner recommendations. A big reason, is that LaR decides to often just call characters by given name. So Chu Xuanji is often just "Xuanji" when being talked to or talked about, often a character only has one name. For a xianxia, this very simple naming scheme means it's easier to learn all the character names and clans asap. It also reminded me a bit of English when I watched, just compared to shows like The Untamed which tend to use family and given name usually "Wei Wuxian" along with alternate names "Wei Ying" and nicknames "Yiling Laozi/A Xian" for many characters. So I feel if you're a learner going into xianxia, Love and Redemption is going to stick pretty straightforward in at least learning names and clans. Then also it's one of my favorite xianxia ever so the story is satisfying. Alternative "easier" starter xianxia: Eternal Love Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms - it's not my favorite but it uses straightforward tropes that are staples in this genre and it is quite solid to follow the plot, Ice Fantasy - not particularly typical, I enjoy the plot on this one, naming conventions are also fairly straightforward).
Hikaru No Go/Qi Hun (a phenomenal adaptation of the Japanese manga/anime of the same name, on iqiyi and currently free on youtube, just absolutely lovely. Slice of life/coming of age/competition story. Lots of everyday kinds of words, competition and school story type words, fast paced which I liked, ghost in the story to add a supernatural flair to the realism of the rest, very heartwarming)
Go Ahead (a serious drama about a family, very good story. Honorable mention to The Bond which I did not finish but is another serious drama about a family, starring Bai Yu).
ANY modern romance drama you can think of (seriously, modern fluffy romance is the EASIEST genre of show to watch in chinese first, language is very simple and that's why Granting You a Dreamlike Life was the first show I watched in chinese - even in republican era, its a romance so the words were easier. I personally liked My Mowgli Boy cause I love Ma Tianyu and it's both dramatic and very silly at times, Advance Bravely - has gong Jun but it's a hot mess so definitely try it and take or leave it lol, Bromance as mentioned is good with Baron Chen, Romance of Hua Rong is a good simple costume drama romance, there's also usually one or two starring your favorite actors if you just look these kinds of dramas up by actor, Plus + Minus bl looks potentially this genre as well)
We Are Not Human (webseries with 5 minute eps, on youtube and some other places. It's supernatural vampire with his zombie boyfriend and other associates, it's a comedy, and it's short comedy skit nature means all situations tend to be slice of life with some easy visual cues making it quite approachable for learners who like wwdits type stories)
Some dramas I love but think are not going to suit all beginners:
Goodbye My Princess (amazing fantasy romantic tragedy)
Rattan (amazing actors, my favorite premise of "alien/mutant" living among humans handled in a heavy way with a very old powerful mutant woman and very mortal human man both played by phenomenal actors)
Bureau of Transformer (on iqiyi, Olivia Wang stars, absolutely best written sci fi I've seen in ages world wide, please give it a shot if you like sci fi case of the week social issue allegory stories a la Star Trek, Black Mirror, Torchwood, etc. One of my top favorite shows ever).
Humans (cdrama adaptation of a show that's had 2 other versions before. It's a sci fi story about androids, stars Ma Tianyu. Incredibly well done, great acting, best sci fi looks/budget I've seen for a cdrama. I've only found it in chinese with chinese subs but it was enjoyable enough and straightforward enough I watched. Absolutely worth it if you enjoy sci fi and liked the other Humans adaptations).
The Secret of The Three Kingdoms (its like an au fanfiction take on The Three Kingdoms full of beautiful people like the best empress performance I've ever seen, Elvis Han, Ma Tianyu, Tan Jianci. One of the period dramas I've most enjoyed).
Love Between Fairy and Devil/cang lan jue (best xianxia I've seen this year, definitely worth watching)
Once Upon a Time In Lingjian Mountain (a very fun time, silly, still pulls heart strings)
Killer and Healer (I watched this with chinese subs so it's doable, but it's an involved republican era crime drama so the plots a fair bit more involved than Detective L)
Word of Honor (watched this in chinese subs then English later so its doable for a learner, but some chinese in this is very poetic or very wuxia genre specific so there's some challenging parts to this, very followable plot if you're familiar with the novel. GREAT wuxia and drama in general so it's worth the watch).
Ultimate Note (dmbj show, I loved it, effects almost as nice as Reboot but shorter and snappier pace which I enjoyed. Reboot and all other dmbj dramas recommended for dmbj fans or perusers.)
LORD Critical World (I know the cgi is bad but its a fun time, Zhang Mingen fans get constant eyecandy, this show is Xena meets Drakengard 3 with a very gay feeling main duo that to me screams Moshang from svsss vibes, fucked up at times and comedic as much as it is dark and just ridiculously bizarre, certainly A Time which I appreciate in shows)
Couple of Mirrors (republican era gl, well acted, you could try watching this as a learner like Killer and Healer, the drama is short so like The Lost Tomb it's not a big commitment, also there's a manhua!)

And here we are, all caught up. You'll notice I fell into a bit of a Chinese drama and historical hole for these last ones! I will try to post as I finish shows so I can give a bit more of a review. Enjoy!
A love so romantic (Cdrama)-Girl pretends to be a long lost granddaughter of the Gu family and falls for the Gu family heir. 8/10 Very funny. The last ten episodes get a bit annoying with dumb amnesia and such, but overall really funny main couple.
The Greatest Love (Kdrama)-An A-list movie star with a heart condition meets former girl group member and now most disliked celebrity. Against all odds, he falls for her. 9/10 This is extremely funny and a bit tropey, but it gets major bonus points for the ending. There's no crazy amnesia or unreasonable misunderstandings. Their dilemma at the end makes sense and wasn't dragged out for too long. There was a bit in the middle where she was trying to reject him that dragged for me and I didn't like the other girl group members very much. But overall, really fun.
The Rebel Princess (Cdrama)-A princess is forced to marry a general turned prince instead of her childhood sweetheart prince. They ultimately fall for each other and endure war, kidnapping, betrayal, and every other kind of misfortune that can happen in a historical drama. 9/10 This drama was refreshing because the couple was so amazing together. They were kind as well as cunning. They were the only characters not seeking power and I just loved the way they worked. It does get a little draggy during some of the palace politics. I also think some of the villians didn't think through their plans. But overall, the leads made the show. Although there are some genuinely heartbreaking moments and too many women committing suicide.
Love Script (Cdrama)- A CEO gets into an accident and believes he's a Prince from the Ming Dynasty. A psychologist is hired and she becomes part of the palace staff in order to treat him. But she begins to fall for him. 8/10 I liked all the characters. It's a really light show and there's a couple of plot twists that ultimately made the lead romance work for me. There were a few too many flashbacks and I found myself skipping through them a lot.
A Girl Like Me (Cdrama)- Ban Hua has three failed engagements, partially because of her blunt manner and explosive temper. She begins getting visions of the future and uses them to save her family from trouble, along with Rong Xia who has his own agenda...but will he be distracted by Ban Hua!? 8.5/10 I really liked this one. The story moved along rather quickly. I love that the Ban family are perfectly happy in their little sphere of life. They adore each other and simply want their family to be happy. The only real negatives are that I don't think some of the villain plots made sense especially toward the end and I thought the last two episodes should have wrapped up the story not made more characters power hungry and foolish. Overall, I really liked it, especially Ban Hua and Rong Xia's banter and courtship.
My little happiness (Cdrama)-An intern lawyer and a successful neurosurgeon who were childhood sweethearts meet again as adults only she never knew his name. Watch the duo fall in love. 8/10 This is a pleasant little ditty with no big problems. The relationship between the main girl and her best friend feels super real to me. I love both main couples. It's a simple sweet sappy love story. There's never any doubt how it will end so just enjoy the sweetness.
Oh! My Sweet Liar! (Cdrama)-Historical- A female painter infiltrates the home of a noble family to paint a copy of a precious item. When her escape goes wrong, she fakes a pregnancy by the family heir to save her life. They make a contract marriage so he can escape an arranged marriage he doesn't want. But there are secrets and plotting people throughout the family home. 8.5/10 I really liked the majority of the show. It was a bit slow the second arc of the show and really the last three eps could have been a bit more streamlined, but I loved the Li family. It was so nice to see the love between the family.
Shopaholic Louis (Kdrama)- A wealthy heir gets amnesia and is found by a poor country girl newly arrived in Seoul to look for her brother. The two fall for each other while searching together. 8.5/10 Super cute. I loved the main couple the whole way through. The side characters grew on me as well. It was a nice sweet story overall.
Love in Time-Cdrama- Writer and a CEO were friends in Jr high but had a falling out. Present day they enter a contract marriage. 8/10 A point bump for 30 minute episodes. The story was sweet and simple with a few pleasant turns. The last episode is a bit dumb. I would've rather just had more epilogue than a faked amnesia plot. I liked the side friendships, but wish the "villain" had a better motivation. Just " I loved him and worked hard for him so he should be mine" obsession got old. The tropes were in full display so avoid if you hate those.
Love and Destiny-Cdrama- A young immortal wanders into the wrong place and awakens the God of War. He discovers a secret about her even she doesn't know. The two fall in love, but bad things happen. Can they overcome destiny with love? 7/10- This one seemed to be a bit long at 60 episodes and it took WAY too long to get started. But by episode 14 or 15 I was completely into the love story and most of the side characters. The two "villains" were annoying but ultimately I understood their choices even if I felt they were immature. Overall, it's good, but a little too slow in some places and the last ten episodes could have given me some more couple moments.
Divorce lawyer in love (Kdrama)- She's a tough as nails divorce lawyer and he's her office manager until she goes to far in a case and her license is suspended. Three years later she's the office manager and he's the lawyer and he sees his chance for some payback.. Enemies to friends to lovers. 8/10 It has its funny moments. I enjoy most of the "case of the week" stories. I thought the resolution to the main antagonist was a bit hand wavy, but overall, solid and enjoyable with mostly fun side characters.
The Sword and the Brocade (Cdrama)- A concubine's daughter marries a Marquis in an arranged marriage. She has to deal with conniving concubines, controlling mother and mother-in-law, as well as a family that doesn't want her around, and a rival family all while trying to continue her embroidery career. 7.5/10 Started out fairly strong but toward the end it felt really drawn out. I feel like the last two plots should have been more combined cause it really dragged the pace of the show down. The characters were good. I liked most of the characters a lot, but a few began to make weird decisions toward the end.
The Eternal Love (Cdrama)- Modern woman sucked to alternate past where she has to share her doppelganger's body. The two with the help of their maid try to figure out what's going on. But things are complicated as each soul is in love with a different prince.,-6/10 The story is okay, although the last four episodes are weird. Chemistry with the leads is fabulous. Really not great production quality. I couldn't get through Season 2.
Eternal Love/Ten Miles of Peach Blossom (Cdrama)- Bai Qian and Ye Hua are star crossed immortals who fall in love in three different but intertwined lives. 9.5/10 Started off slow, then got wonderful about ep 10, then pain and misery for a few eps before back to joy and falling in love and back to pain. But one of the best revenge scenes by Bai Qian! I sort of hated that basically every other couple seems doomed. I tried to watch the pillow book before this and just got bored. I may go back to it someday as I love that couple.
General's Lady (Cdrama)- independent noble sent to marry the "demon" general at the border only to fall in love with him. However there are factions trying to harm them. 9/10 Super light and sweet with lots of kisses. I got a bit bored a little past the middle of the drama when they went back to the capital. But the last several episodes brought me back around and I laughed out loud multiple times. Love all the couples throughout and how it showed there were multiple ways to be a strong woman.

So what is this blossom tucked demurely behind Lan Zhan’s ear?  (Or is it caught up in his forehead ribbon?  Hmmm.)  @silvarbelle and I were wondering about it.
I sent this picture to my mother, a scholar and professional gardener for 50 years, and she ID’d it as (probably, with some artistic license for the leaves):
Peach blossom!
And what is the literary and cultural significance of this lovely flower in China?
Peach blossoms (and, more generally, peach trees, wood and fruit) represent:
falling in love (because they show up in the spring, the season of romance) and marriage
beauty, with its bright colors, elegant figure and light scent
modesty, sincerity, virtue and honesty (since the tree grows quietly and does show off, yet is still sought out)
fertility (because the tree bears rich fruits and flowers before it grows leaves, demonstrating vigor)
immortality/long life (it’s the fruit of the god of immortality [Sau], peaches have often been described as the food of the gods, and peach wood is often used for spiritual doorways)
protection against evil spirits [handy for Cultivators!]
purity/virginity (in Japan, at least)
Mom said, “So I guess that means we are looking at a loyal female virgin who is possibly engaged and hoping to have a long life."  And I have been laughing so hard, because if you swap the genders, that is so Lan Wangji.

The Sword and The Brocade (2021)
Tumblr media
Summary
Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story revolves around the romance between General Xu Ling Yi and the concubine's daughter Shi Yi Niang, that starts from an arranged marriage. Despite being born with a low status, Shi Yi Niang is extremely assertive and believes that a woman's vision should not be limited to the household. She hopes to rely on her embroidery skills as a ticket to freedom. However, the once esteemed Luo family is in a state of decline. Hoping to save the clan through a marriage alliance, Shi Yi Niang is selected to become the wife of Yongping Duke and great General Xu Ling Yi. Things were not easy for her due to the Xu family's biases towards her. Nonetheless, she manages to win over their trust through her optimism and sincerity. Xu Ling Yi also becomes attracted to her various beautiful qualities such that husband and wife manage to find love after marriage. Through Xu Ling Yi's support, Shi Yi Niang opens Xian Ling Pavillion to have her own embroidery workshop. Meanwhile, Xu Ling Yi experiences many setbacks as he tries to protect his homeland and improve the livelihood of the people by supporting the lifting of a maritime ban. As they face a crisis that could spell the end for the Xu family, Xu Ling Yi and Shi Yi Niang continue to support each other through thick and thin.
Review
Surprisingly Addictive !
Personally, I find The Sword And The Brocade to be addictive. I kept watching one episode after another and completed the whole drama within 3 to 4 days. What made me hooked is the way the story is told and the smart female character. It is a bit like Word Of Honor whereby the story execution could make or break a drama. In this case, it is a romance drama and the relationship between the male and female lead follows a slow but smooth progress. It is different from a lot of romance dramas whereby the leads just fall in love at first sight or after a short period of bickering like Overlord and The Wolf Princess. Therefore, I find that The Sword And The Brocade has a unique charm because the romance is kind of gentle and gradually persuasive. It has a very different flavor from the usual to make it a compelling watch for me. However, I also understand why some people can’t relate to this drama as the male character is written to be cold especially towards his concubines. A Cold Male Lead The main male character, Ling Yi, has a few concubines besides an official wife. So, this is a drama that features a lot of schemings by revengeful and jealous concubines. It does have that element of stereotyping. This is not helped by a mother-in-law who practices favoritism. If you are not into this kind of set-up, this drama may appear unattractive. That was what I thought too but the female character saved the day for me which I will elaborate later. Basically, a cold male lead is not new. Legend Of Yun Xi and Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms also start off with an aloof male lead. But because Ling Yi has a few concubines, some viewers may have issue with the way he treats them. In the drama, Ling Yi simply has no affections for them. So, he tends to neglect his concubines especially after the female lead comes into the picture. You can say that he is pretty unfair when it comes to the amount of attention he lavishes on his wife versus the rest of his women. Personally, I’m fine with it because I can relate to his situation as the head of a very traditional family and why he ended up having to marry them. He is also repulsed by their schemes and over-eagerness to curry favor with him because he is just not that type who would fall for their wily behavior. If you look at it this way, then Ling Yi will become a more palatable male lead. An Astute Female Lead Shi Yi Niang’s ability to read the situation and seize it to her advantage is what makes her character interesting to me. So, yes, it is a typical concubine and mother-in-law historical drama whereby they try to make things hard for the female lead. But Shi Yi Niang is not that poor woman in need of her man’s help. She is smart and astute to know how to turn the tables on them. In a way, the female lead carried the show for me. Rather than a sob story with a pitiful female character, she blazes the trail with her independence and courage to take risk. Hence, if you like watching strong and smart female characters in your dramas, The Sword And The Brocade will certainly qualify as one of them. A Sweet And Gentle Romance The plot starts off with Shi Yi Niang wanting to investigate her mother’s death. As the drama progresses, it switches to the relationship between Shi Yi Niang and Ling Yi with the investigation remaining relevant as a sub-plot. I think some might find the romance unrealistic that Ling Yi seems to tread on eggshells around his new wife when he is an experienced married man. I guess it is needed to slowly build up the romance. So, you will find him remaining respectful and a gentleman when it comes to romancing and sleeping with Shi Yi Niang. Thus, if you want to enjoy this romance drama, you will need to put aside a dose of realism. But that is how it is with most dramas out there anyway. For me, the romance is the slow burn type but charming nonetheless because Shi Yi Niang doesn’t fawn over Ling Yi like he expected her to. She beguiles him and after getting to know her better, he ends up adoring her. Hence, it is gentle progress as they build a foundation of trust
after various experiences and start to admire each other’s good qualities. It has a positive feel in a way that is both sweet and satisfying. My Verdict I know many people are watching The Sword And The Brocade because of the leads. Seven Tan is a talented actress who tends to have great chemistry with her co-stars. She did well in Under The Power as well as Go Ahead whereby she is paired with someone younger than her. As for Wallace Chung, he has been around for a long time and is a highly experienced actor. Both of them did manage to generate enough chemistry in The Sword And The Brocade for me. I guess it really depends on whether you find them to be a matching pair appearance-wise as there is a big age gap between them. If you don’t, then the chemistry will feel forced just like the pairing in Dating In The Kitchen and the drama will lose its shine altogether. Nevertheless, I would still recommend a watch with a score of 8/10 for this The Sword And The Brocade review. Perhaps it could have been shortened rather than stretched to 45 episodes as the women’s schemings can get tiring. But the plot keeps it going as the investigative element and feud with the Ou family offer more variety to the story while remaining closely tied to the romance. That is why I find it to be an addictive drama overall. Watch it if you want a different feel to a romance rather than the usual. Also, the OSTs of the drama are really beautiful to listen to especially the one by Zhou Shen which fits the drama to a tee!

Note
I've just started getting into period c-dramas and I see you reblogging about a few of them. And I was wondering if you had some recs? Thanks, I love SM and DH. it's okay if you don't answers this I know this may not be the purpose of your blog.
Hi nonny!
Period cdramas are my jam!!! I love period cdramas (and fantasy/wuxia/xianxia), although I used to watch primarily HK ones and only in recent years started to watch mainland ones. I’m going to assume you’ve watched The Untamed (陈情令) since you came to me and my blog is like...90% CQL lol, so I’ll leave that off this list XD
I’ll be providing YouTube links where I can, but please note that the subs on YouTube are not...the greatest. I don’t usually watch cdramas with subs, so I’m not sure which places to recommend. Sorry in advance!
Nirvana In Fire (琅琊榜)
I think everyone recs this at some point, but it’s just THAT GOOD. It’s set around the Northern and Southern Dynasties era and is primarily a political drama, but also has elements of wuxia (martial arts) mixed in. My favourite part of this drama was the intricate plot and also the wealth of interesting side characters that give the whole drama extra depth. There’s not much romance, but the individual characters and the plot is gripping enough without it.
(I tried to watch the sequel Nirvana in Fire II: The Wind Blows in Changlin (琅琊榜之风起长林), but I never really got into it? I should really try again, but at that point I was still really attached to the first one and wasn’t ready to let go lol. I’ve heard it’s good too!)
Legend of Ruyi (如懿传)
Okay I just finished watching this the other day and I really enjoyed it. It’s set in the Qing dynasty, during the rule of the Qianlong Emperor, and is about the life of Ulanara the Step Empress. I loved the strong female friendships in this (it’s rare in a Palace drama), and the complex dynamics between concubines of different ranks. The progression of Ruyi and Qianlong’s relationship feels very organic and (if you’re familiar with the history) is like a reverse-slowburn where you’re just really rooting for her to get out and when she finally stands up for herself it’s like \o/
(also cameo by everyone’s favourite shijie, Xuan Lu!)
The Story of Yanxi Palace ( 延禧攻略)
This is also set in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, but the story is completely different. It’s about the Imperial Noble Consort Weigiya and her rise from a palace maid to the Emperor’s favourite consort. It’s funnier and more light-hearted than Ruyi, but it still has its fair share of dramas. The main character is a ‘non-traditional’ woman in that she’s outspoken, brazen and can be quite cruel when dealing with her opponents, but she’s still fundamentally a good person so you really root for her throughout the show.
I personally wouldn’t recommend watching this and Ruyi together or back-to-back because you’ll probably get whiplash from how different the characters are portrayed and how differently the history is interpreted, but it really highlights how much we don’t know about the palace women throughout Chinese history.
The Story of Ming Lan (知否知否应是绿肥红瘦)
NOT a palace drama this time! But it still explores the very complex family dynamics in China between wives and concubines and their respective children, about marriage and social hierarchy and how an unfavoured, illegitimate daughter of a low-ranking imperial official rises to become the wife of a powerful Marquis in the Song Dynasty. I’m a massive fan of Zhao Liying, the main actress, and her husband on the show is her husband IRL and they are the CUTEST HECKING COUPLE I swear to god. Their chemistry is OFF THE CHARTS.
Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (三生三世十里桃花)
Xianxia (fantasy/martial arts) drama about an immortal Fox Spirit and her love story with the Crown Prince of the Nine Heavens that spans over three “lives”. There’s magic, sword fighting, questionable CGI and a lot of typical romance drama stuff like pining, misunderstandings, miscommunication and jealousy etc. I found this drama more compelling than its sequel Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book (三生三世枕上书) because the characters were better fleshed out (although a lot of the same characters appear in both), and it was easier to get emotionally invested in them. Also I find Bai Qian a lot less...annoying than Fengjiu (who is so cute, but oh my god can be quite irritating sometimes).
Love and Destiny (三生三世宸汐缘)
Apparently this is meant to be set in a similar universe to Peach Blossoms, but it’s quite different. This is the love story between a young bird spirit and the God of War, which also spans over three lives. I found it a lot darker than Peach Blossoms, and a lot more tragic, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I had expected to when I first heard about it. I really liked the main character (Lingxi) here (she’s a good mix of Bai Qian and Fengjiu), and although I wasn’t quite sold on the development of her relationship with Jiu Chen at first, they won me over with some really heart-wrenching story lines.
(I don’t know if the playlist above is Eng subbed though, sorry!)
Other dramas that I liked are:
Empresses in the Palace (甄嬛传) - it got really messy in the end, but I really like Li Sun so I kept watching. It’s meant to be a prequel to Legend of Ruyi (above), set in the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor (Qianlong Emperor’s father). Don’t watch it on Netflix though, they really messed it up by trying to condense the story and it doesn’t work.
Legend of Fuyao (扶摇) - xianxia drama about a slave girl who was cursed as a child and sets off to collect magical artifacts to lift it. I got up to about Episode 20 and then life got in the way, so I didn’t finish it, but I’ve been meaning to get back to it one of these days. It stars Yang Mi, who plays Bai Qian in Peach Blossoms.
Princess Agents (特工皇妃楚乔传) - I really liked this drama, but it gets really dark and touches on some darker themes like rape, murder and torture, and the story gets quite messy and it ends on a cliffhanger (there was talk of a sequel a couple of years ago, but nothing’s come of it). Stars Zhao Liying (from Story of Ming Lan), who is so badass in action roles.
Noble Aspirations: The Legend of Chusen (青云志) - another xianxia drama about an orphan boy Zhang Xiaofan who joins the Qingyun Sect after the massacre of his village and falls in love with the daughter of the leader of the Ghost King (an enemy of the “righteous” sects). It starts off quite slow, took me about 5 eps to really get into it, but I enjoyed it for the most part. There’s a season 2 that kind of ends on a cliffhanger, and there’s been rumours of season 3 for years but nothing has ever come of it so it was quite disappointing. Stars Zhao Liying (again, I’m a massive fan haha), and is based on the same novel as Xiao Zhan’s movie Jade Dynasty (which I haven’t watched yet).

🌷🍰 Beltane 🌷🍰
Tumblr media
🌷 Also known as May Day
🌷 Art By: Jacqueline De Leon on Instagram
________________________________________________________________
🍰 When Is Beltane?
🌷 Northern Hemisphere:
30April - 1 May
It can be celebrated either day or is traditionally celebrated from the night of 30 April until the day of 1 May
🌷 Southern Hemisphere:
31 October - 1 November
________________________________________________________________
🍰 What Is Beltane?
🌷 Beltane is celebrated because we are now at the peak of spring; the sun god has now taken over. For many of us, summer is arriving, or is coming very soon. It’s super joyous, happy, exciting day that honours life. The earth is buzzing and all of the earth’s energies are thriving: fertility, sexuality, passion, energy and new life are at their peak of stimulation at this time. Fertility is the main theme for Beltane. The Triple Goddess in her maiden form and the Horned God are finally united and they are bringing new life on the earth. It’s the time of the year when we need to grant luck to the summer months and the growth that is coming. It is one of the solar festivals, the other being Samhain. Beltane represents birth, while Samhain represents death, which is why Beltane is seen as the most important celebration by some people.
________________________________________________________________
🍰 How To Celebrate:
🌷 Beltane celebrations focus on fertility, abundance and all of the amazing gifts that the earth gives us at this time.
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Activities:
🌷 Create amulets made from rose quartz and give them to loved ones, friends and family. This is a gift that can help with positivity and passion and they can help to lower anxiety too. For specific loved ones this can help with the passion and romance between the two of you and it can also calm nerves!
🌷 Flowers and greenery are a huge part of Beltane.
🌷 Create flower crowns.
🌷 Create daisy chains.
🌷 Wear flowers on your body.
🌷 Make a green man mask from leaves.
🌷  Beltane is a time of love, so if you have a loved one that you would like to make a commitment to, this is an excellent time for marriage, handfasting and promise rituals. You may want to plan your ceremony for Beltane.
🌷 Dance round a maypole; this is a pole that is typically made from wood or metal and that has ribbons tied to a wreath around it. The maypole, is a phallic symbol of the male, the wreath around it and the ribbons coming off it, the vagina. We are celebrating fertility and the marriage of the two of them around this time! You can do a traditional maypole dance around this pole holding the ribbons. Look out for nearby maypole festivities - there are probably more than you think; if not you can create one yourself with your loved ones or your coven.
Tumblr media
🌷 Also if you have plans to conceive, now is a great and lucky time!
🌷 Another way to celebrate love is just to go for a walk- you could search for a hawthorn tree, make a wish , have a picnic and collect some wild flowers. Share this experience with a friend or loved one or enjoy a solitary walk.
🌷 Spells to cast at this time are love spells and vitality, protection, romance and purification spells. Casting your circles with oats around this time of year is also a good idea! They are a traditional Beltane grain for good luck.
🌷 Light a Beltane fire- have a Beltane fire ritual with your friends and family, serve food and have an outside bonfire. Fires are traditionally to honor our sun gods, and celebrate the warmth and the sun god taking over the cold.
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Altar Ideas
🌷 Decorate it with seasonal spring flowers.
🌷 Drape it with green cloth and ribbons to represent the green earth as it is now here!
🌷 Add birch and hawthorn branches, burnt in your cauldron.
🌷 Light red, pink and green candles.
🌷 Red and pink represent passion, love and fertility, which suit the theme of Beltane.
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Food And Drink
🌷 Oats in all forms; oat cookies, oatmeal, oat bread
🌷 Dairy, cheeses and milks or dairy-free alternatives
🌷 Also spicy food, to represent the element of fire and the sun
🌷 May Day wine
🌷 Vanilla-flavoured foods
🌷 Fairy Cakes
🌷 Ice Cream
🌷 Sweet breads
🌷 Elderflower and other flowery-flavoured cordials
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Crystals
🌷 Relevant crystals to carry around with you this time of the year and to meditate with, use in divination and spell work, place at your altar and, around Beltane, give as gifts to loved ones and partners, are:
🌷 Rose Quartz
🌷 Emerald
🌷 Sunstone
🌷 Pink Tourmaline
🌷 Beryl
🌷 Pink angel aura quartz
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Herbs And Flowers
🌷 Any herbs and flowers that are blooming now where you live are perfect or Beltane. Try to get the most vibrant and powerful blossoming herbs to work with at this time of the year.
🌷 Lilac
🌷 Thistle
🌷 Flaxseed
🌷 Paprika
🌷 Hawthorn
🌷 Rowan
🌷 Daffodil
🌷 Honeysuckle
________________________________________________________________
🍰 Incense
🌷 Good incense to use during casting circles, burning at your altar around Beltane time and for cleansing and consecrating, as well as for magickal workings, are:
🌷 Peach
🌷 Rose
🌷 Vanilla
🌷 Jasmine

I have come to the conclusion that none of this happened. Liam properly hid his magic, Amethar was crowned Emperor and quickly set up a council to run the country, and everyone's alive and dandy. Caramellinda was called to come join her husband, and she's able to get over her mistrust of the outside world to join up with Primbalina to become an awesome duo ruling the country, with Amethar as their front and hype man.
Jet and Ruby stay in the capital with their parents for a bit longer, during which Jet and Anabelle begin a whirlwind romance. It doesnt start that way, it starts as just hero worship from Jet and Anabelle agreeing to train her, but they spend more time together and become closer and closer until one day Anabelle pins Jet against the wall with her sword, and one second they're trading barbs about how the other fought, and the next they're making out in the otherwise empty room. They make no promises, come to no agreements, and dont even talk about things for a long while, only having fantastic make out sessions after each training.
Ruby spends her time secretly learning magic from Theo and Lapin and even Liam, soaking up everything she can. When her sister goes off for her "training sessions" (which she totally knows is just code for making out with Anabelle. She's slightly jealous, because she did technically see Anabelle first, but overall she's just glad her sister is happy), she wanders around the capital with the Tart Guard in tow, looking for something to keep herself entertained. She eventually finds a performance troupe, and finds herself falling into her own kind of love. Both with the physics defying stunts the performers are doing, and with a young fructarian, a non-binary peach. The two of them become close friends, the romance that will blossom between them on the slower side, especially because of their differences in status. But Ruby is second in line, and she's happy with taking her time, just excited to see their smile and feel the warmth of their hand in her own.
Liam is always so confused about what he's supposed to be doing on the council, and half the time he just accidently offends people. It doesnt help that he gets another letter from his brothers, claiming that he's fully turned against the family by joining their enemies. But he like Amethar and Jet and Ruby more then his father and brothers, so he just shrugs and waits for someone to tell him what to do. And after a long talk with Caramellinda, they figure out the perfect position for him - Master of the Harvest. Usually a position that goes towards one of the more plant based people, its agreed upon that his knowledge of seeds, of all types, greatly surpasses those of many others, especially for his young age. So he's given a group of guards who understand the magic of druidcraft (which Brennan did say was allowed) and sent off on missions to inspect the crops from each region, returning frequently with reports and his bag full of seeds to show off to his favorite cousins. He has a brief engagement with Primsey, but she's too in love with her lost beu, and he's honest with the fact that he doesnt want to have sex and so wont be able to give her kids. She fully accepts that, and they still stay great, amazing friends. He's always welcomed in her home in the Dairy Islands. Eventually, while it's just him and Preston and his guards for a long while, he does find a kindred spirit in a meat person, a Turkey druid who also doesnt want romance or sex but would love to be held and loves seeds. They strike up a very quick friendship, and soon become the closest either will ever be to a couple. Best friends, traveling the world to look at seeds, holding hands cause they're both aro ace and dont care if people think they're gay.
Lapin manages to keep his secrets from the world at large, though his companions all know the truth, eventually. He works in secret to undermine the Bulb, and allow other religions to sneak their way into being acceptable again. It takes a long time, but eventually he succeeds, in a fashion. The Bulb is still seen as the supreme god, but the Sugarplum Fairy and the Carnivorous Creatures and all the others we dont know about are more seen messengers of the Bulb. Holy in their own right, fighting against The Hungry One in their own right, made of and from the Bulb, if not the Bulb themselves. The true believers of these other religions just roll their eyes and nod, but hey - its progress, and the magic granted by these other beings slowly beings to sink back in and return to Calorum. Lapin is able to eventually relax into his true passion - arguing with that dumb brute of a body guard and teach the future children.
Speaking of the brute, Theo continues to enjoy his job. He loves being a guard, loves training other guards, and when they're still at the capital, he loves training Ruby and Jet. When they're gone, he throws himself into training everyone else, and honestly enjoys himself. He is a war guy, though he's fully adapted to peace, and is just happy to see how the word continues to prosper. When he's not working, he fight with Lapin, drinks and plays games with Amethar, and goes on long walks with Sprinkle. He's an old man, gets to be Lapin's age, though their advanced ages doent stop either of them from constantly going at each other, and just enjoys his life in the capital. He sometimes regrets not having his own family, but the remembers that he does, they're just named the Rocks.
Going back to where we left off the Rocks, rules of Candia, soon enough ways must be parted. Liam's gotten used to saying goodbye to Ruby and Jet, so when its decided that Jet must return home and take up the mantal of Queen, its not hard for him. It is for everyone else, though. Theo is torn about letting this little spitfire go home alone, and Lapin is sure she needs at least another decade of schooling before she'll be ready. Caramelinda is of the same mind, and would go back to continue ruling instead if she wasnt so integral to ruling the rest of the world. Amethar is sure Jet will do fine, she's great, but this is his little girl. He's had to leave a few times, yes, but she's never had to leave him. It's hard.
And Ruby. The two talk for a long, long time, but eventually decide to part ways. Just for now, of course, nonetheless, they have different paths to walk. Ruby is starting a life here in the capital, with their parents and her peach datemate, and it really seems like the circus thing is going to stick. And in court, the few times she's sat in on a meeting, she's been able to provide the common point of view, which has been severely lacking. She likes being helpful, in a non-stressful kind of way. And so, even though she knows Jet needs to go take her place as Queen of Candia, she wants to stay.
And Jet is hurt, because she's the only one in the family who has to leave, and she at least thought Ruby would come with her. But, instead of trying to force her, or find a way to stay, Jet, instead, hits the books. She begins searching through everything she can, putting off her return one more week ("I guess Cal has a decent hold on things for the moment," Emperor Amethar agreed when she told him her plans) to find what she needed. And what she needed was a long distance messaging spell, that Lapin helped to modify. A tether between the two, one they could open at any time, to allow them to speak to each other whenever they wanted. A twin messager, if you would, that allowed them to always be with each other.
That done, Jet said her goodbyes to her family, and went to say her lost goodbye to the woman who has stolen her heart. Only to find her gone, Captain Anabelle Cheddar's ship having set sail in the middle of the night. She kept a straight face, though the moment she was on the road, alone besides the Tart Guarda and the Imperial Soliders her dad had sent with her, Jet opened the channel with Ruby and cried.
It was a rough week of traveling. Not because of any danger, no, it was smooth on that front. But because for the first time in her life, she was going to be alone. It was easier, having Ruby to still talk to, to pass along messages to their parents and friends, but still, it hurt to not have an actual hug when her heart was breaking.
It hurt so bad, she didnt notice the strange ship at port when they passed through their one town that accessed the ocean, only a day's meep ride away from the castle. She didnt notice the strange visitors who joined the crowds there to welcome her home – she was so focused on keeping an excited face.
She only noticed when she entered the throne room, calling for Cal, the only adult figure currently in her life who could give her a hug and promise everything was going to be ok.
Only then did she notice Captain Anabelle Cheddar, playing with a knife as she sat on her throne, ignoring the guards who were trying to scold her. Anabelle, who looked up as Jet entered, and greeted her with a giant smile, welcoming and excited to see her. Anabelle who stood, walked over, and pulled her into a long, deep kiss.
Both of them would soon come to reconsider their positions on marriage, if they could marry the woman next to them. Lapin would get to work, poking and prodding the church to make it allowed, and with Amethar blessing this union, they made it work.
And Amethar? Being Emperor was hard, though less so with support. He learned how to show Caramelinda that he appreciated her, learned how to be a better husband and kind, learned what his actual duties were to the people under his command. Something he should have done a long time ago, but just hadn’t had the will to do so. But now everything was in his court, literally, and he had to do what was right.
And he fell back in love with Caramelinda, all over again. They had been in love before, back when he was fifth in line, before the war. But then time and distance had parted them for so long, and he had fallen for another, a young woman from the Dairy Islands. They had met, married, had their wedding night before war had once again parted them. He finally sat down with Jack, and got the full story – a bit over a year later, the young dairy woman had married a young farmer, they had had children of their own, and a decade ago she had passed from some cheese illness Amethar couldn’t even pretend to understand. He was sad, but was glad that she had had a good life, since he had loved her, in the way that death and violence and needing someone to be there grew a kind of love.
But that was done now. Not gone, but like a closed book, and with that closure, the part of Amethar that had been resisting the life he now had felt a little bit more settled. He still hated every bit of being king, still played hooky with Cal when he visited from being Candia’s advisor or Theo whenever he could, but he tried. He showed Caramelinda how much he appreciated her, and actually finally learned how to read, and figured out names and stations so he could help make the world a better place, and it was worth it.
It was worth it to fall back in love with Caramelinda, to actually feel the flips in his stomach that she used to give him, back before when he was young and before war had broken something inside of him. It was worth it to see that smile of hers, and know that she was feeling it too, the love they had both wanted and struggled for for the last twenty years. It was worth it to kiss his wife and actually be happy.
And damn it, if Gustav’s last prank was to make him responsible for the entire world, then at least he was by the side of the best of wives and best of women, Caramelinda of the house of Rocks.
And it was worth it, in the end. It was worth it to help Lapin out whenever he could, slowly reshaping the church so it better fit the world they were making. It was worth it to watch Theo train the next generation of guards into a fighting force that almost surpassed himself, guards loyal and loving and just as kind and as great a friend as Theo was himself.  It was worth it to see Liam grow into a confident young man, sure of himself, instrumental in helping to ensure the continent was properly fed. It was worth it to watch Ruby become a master performer and spy, passing on the commoner’s thoughts of him and his empire so adjustments could be made, so the masses could be protected and cared for and satisfied without fear. In fact, many sought out Ruby, knowing she had the Emperor’s ear, and could pass on what they were scared to say to his face, for even though he was a good, kind ruler, a fear of rulers still existed. It was worth it to see Queen Jet and Queen Consort Anabelle rule his old home with kindness and love, their union having strengthened the Candian alliance with the Dairy Islands.
It was worth it, as age crept in, to sit there, holding hands with the love of his life, watching as a chocolate milk girl wrestled with a cobbler boy, all while two little cheesecake children slept in their laps. It was worth it to lean over and kiss Caramelinda’s cheek, to see the love pouring from her as they watched over their grandchildren, knowing that soon their friends and the rest of their family would be in one room again, and that none of them would ever have to be war people. It was worth it to know that, because of their efforts, all they would know was peace, and if the most these children ever became was a ruler, or a performer, or a knight, or a warlock, or a seed guy, all because of their efforts?
It was enough.
Except for poor Thad who, as far as they knew, was still in the alley.

What’s next?
I have glutted myself on as much MDZS/The Untamed & MXTX content as possible, down to the dregs of terrible Chinese variety shows with no subtitles where the actors are guests ... (surprises being big bro Lan as unexpectedly capable and attractive, and Jiang Cheng really just a cute smiley kid who has no filter.)
Considering the following, opinions?
1. Love and Destiny
Same production team as Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, which had a cracktastic main romance. Or maybe it was just Mark. Also recommended by AvenueX. And has Nini, who was great in TRoP. But I’m in ep 3, and it’s still just setup and the main guy looks like his wig’s pulled too tight.
2. Rookie Historian whatever
Gifs look so cute, and I like the premise of a whole team of royal girl historians who love their job and don’t need no marriage.
3. Oh My General
Ok, so I only saw a single Tumblr post on it, but it sounds awesome. Military general lady makes husband AND his concubines swoon? Hilarity hopefully ensues.

Valentine's Day Cocktails - Romantic Drinks & Love Potions
Tumblr media
What's The Most Romantic Drink For Valentine's Day?
That depends on your Valentine and what you're both in the mood for. Champagne and wine paired with chocolate and strawberries are some of Cupid's classic choices as amorous aphrodisiacs for V Day. However, the names, colors and/or ingredients in the collection of romantic drinks listed below make all these love potions potations great choices as Valentine's Day themed cocktails too.
Valentine's Day Cocktail Ideas
Affinity - [uh-fin-i-tee] A natural liking or attraction to someone which may have already, or will, result in falling in love and getting married to that person. That textbook dictionary definition is synonymous with Valentine's Day couples subject to Cupid's arrow. The modern version of this cocktail is a marriage of French and Italian vermouths to scotch whisky dashed with bitters. How sweet it is.
Barbara - This decadent dessert drink is a creamy, chocolaty cocktail mixed with vodka, white creme de cacao and cream.
Bellini - Is your Valentine as pretty as a peach? Then complement her beauty with this brunch favorite made with peach puree and Prosecco Italian sparkling wine.
Between The Sheets - This sensually suggestive sip is a Sidecar for sweethearts with equal parts rum, brandy, orange liqueur and lemon juice.
Cherry Blossom - The bright red from grenadine's pomegranate syrup and the brandied cherries form a flowering beverage blooming in crimson color for passionate picnicking under the celebrated Japanese tree.
Cupid Cocktail - Named after the Roman mythological god of desire, attraction and affection, this erotic love potion is a Sherry Flip spiced with red hot cayenne pepper instead of nutmeg.
Jayne Mansfield - This blonde bombshell was the February 1955 Playboy Playmate of the Month and her signature drink combines rum with strawberries and champagne. Just add a gift box of milk chocolates for a taste trifecta.
Love Potion #9 - You'd think that when you heard the Clovers sing about Madam Rue bottling this drink in her sink that some bathtub gin would be portioned into her potion. That's not the case though. There are so many to choose from that it's hard to decide, but a few of the formulas we love feature vodka and peach schnapps with either blood orange or pink grapefruit juice. Suggest you pour your favorite in a ratio of 3:1:3 and garnish with a strawberry for sip starters.
Niagara Falls - Are you proposing marriage on Valentine's Day? Then raise a toast to your bride to be with this drink. It honors the collective name for the three waterfalls that border the United States and Canada between the province of Ontario and the state of New York, one of which is Bridal Veil Falls. Made with vodka, orange liqueur, lemon juice, simple syrup and ginger ale, this misty mixer will shower her with additional tears of joy after you've popped the question.
Old Fashioned - If you love old fashioned romance and courting then you should value this drink as part of your date night with your valentine.
Poinsettia - The combination of orange liqueur, cranberry juice and champagne are a perfect pairing for passion. Why would you leave this red cocktail only on your list of Christmas holiday drinks?
Rose - “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet...” ~ Juliet, in reference to Romeo's house, Montague. Along with hearts, cupid, lovebirds, doves, love knots, laces and more, roses are a popular Valentine's Day symbol which you can include as flowing flowers with these romantic recipes.
Valentino - Although it sounds like its related to Valentine's Day, this cocktail actually honors Rudolph Valentino, the Italian born silent film star known as the Latin Lover. However, the Campari in this Negroni variation gives this modern classic its bittersweet flavor and ruby red color which paired with the actor's on screen reputation is perfect for the occasion. The Americano which is minus the gin with a splash of club soda is a lighter version of the two.
What Valentine's Day drink does your sweetheart love?
